Being one of Ravenwood’s Crime Scene Investigators was a dream come true for Selena Hawke. It was a chance at a new life, something normal and far better than serving a selfish and deranged Unseelie Queen, better known as the “Mad Queen”.

Selena loves being a Detective. She’s one of the first fey to break the chains of the Unseelie Court and officially become part of the human world. When a strange spree of murders rock Ravenwood, she must summon all her skills and power to find the murderers and defeat them.

To add to her troubles, her human lover, Eli, has decided to free Cleotro, a fey turned familiar and criminal to all faery kind. Stopping the murders was challenge enough, not falling for Cleotro’s dark sexual desires may prove even harder. All the while, the Mad Queen has set her sights on possessing Eli as her own.

Doing the right thing sucks. Doing the right thing sucks even more when someone you love goes mad with power, and turning him in will lead to massive consequences for both of you. Yet the hero of this series does the right thing, often at a great personal cost.

Selena Hawke, a former soldier and one of most powerful Faeries, finds herself in this situation when her coworker and lover Cleo decides he wants to use World War II weapons to grab power. She has to turn him in, take charge of his sentence where he can never attain his old faery form, and linger under the threat that if he betrays her again then she'll have to face the Faery Queen's wrath. Nothing like imminent betrayal to kill a romantic relationship, if not the romantic mood.

In the modern day, Selena and Cleo take care of Eli, a powerful reincarnation of a renowned wizard. Eli is a genius but sometimes too clever for his own good, so he needs people watching out for him. Selena doubles duty as a cop in the human city Ravenwood's Paranormal Investigation Division, adding more good to the world and being a bad girl in bed.

In the middle of a magical plague and another supernatural case, Eli decides to help Cleo resume his true form, trusting his guardian to not betray Selena again. Selena agrees, with reservations, but soon things go wrong. The Fair Folk are never to be trusted with their plans and ulterior motives, and Selena soon realizes she can't take risks with her body, or with Eli's safety.

Fallen is a story about lust, unconventional relationships, and the strain that comes with time. It also depicts rather erotic scenes to contrast with the violence and suspense. Faeries and the Fair Folk, with the exception of Selena, cannot be trusted to keep their word or to abide by honor. They contribute to the novel's more nightmarish parts, and remind us why people prefer the cutesy little magic creatures with wings. That Selena refuses to conform to this ideal and do the right thing, even when doing the right thing sucks for her, shows ample character. Cleo has to work through his issues as well, while Eli balances his sometimes arrogance genius with harsh reality checks. All in all we get quite a ride, and the promise of more tales to tell.
