It’s my love of Dan Slott’s fantastic four run that persuaded me into reading this marvel event. Although I love the wittiness of the fantastic four family, not alot of Dan Slott’s light hearted quirky fun snuck it’s way into this series.

Although Slott is one of four writers, I was a little disappointed with a feeling of foreigness when it came to the overall vibe of this story. Not to mention, the ridiculousness of the concept (which was the marvel version of plants versus zombies). Whether it was the hollowness of the main villains, or the underwhelming prelude issues (I believe I read 3 out of 5 of this event), this series felt like work to me.

Don’t get me wrong, the artwork is fantastic, and the Hulkling story is extremely captivating, but this just seemed like it either didn’t need to be a marvel team up event, or needed to be explored further (no matter how bored I would’ve become).

The positives are: the artwork, the fantastic four storyline including the acquiring of 2 new characters, and the bonus story’s after the main event has concluded.

The negatives: the overall threat of the cotati just didn’t seem to be there, another skrull versus Kree story (although to be fair it had a wildly different approach this time), and the underwhelming prelude issues.

If this didn’t continue the narrative of Slott’s fantastic four one, I wouldn’t have considered this essential reading, but I’m always glad to expand my knowledge of my favorite comic runs. If not for the power of the hulking story and the art, I would’ve given this a lower rating, but those two aspects are very well done.
