You know how we are told to think we are enough, we are deserving, we have something to offer the world? But thinking just doesn’t cut it because we still don’t really believe it? “You Are the Medicine” had me remembering this truth from somewhere deep inside of me that never forgot.

Based on the 13 Moon Cycles in the Gregorian calendar, Asha shares the wisdom of the Animals, Tree, and Plants through storytelling; sacred Animal Spirit Medicine; her personal experiences; and the practical work of personal reflections, ceremonies, rituals, journeying and an invitation to honour your ancestors and heritage. She weaves this, her Medicine, throughout the book to help you find your Inner Healer and remember who you are.

Over 10 years ago, Asha was given her Spirit Name of Healing Rainbow Medicine Woman by her Grandfather. In the book she reflects on how this sacred name has evolved, “I have come to know that I am a bridge between two worlds. I stand as a trailblazer between traditional and modern ways. I walk in balance and harmony, bringing all folds together and helping us move love into action.”

And with this book, she has accomplished just that.

This book is a WEALTH of information! I especially loved the ‘Medicine Reflections’ portions that engage critical thinking and self analysis, I also loved the grounding/meditation practices outlined in the book.

This review is going to be slightly controversial, and depending on your experiences, this review could be triggering, but it is an honest review of my reading experience. That is why I tried to be as gentle and respectful as possible. I believe these things need to be talked about and they need to be talked about respectfully. This review is not hateful, but it’s one that can spark debate, and we all know where debates have the potential to go these days.

This is a very difficult review for me and I’m still on the fence. I was convinced this was going to be a five star read. Though I’ve been a pagan for going on 7 years now, I’m still deconstructing from the indoctrination of the fundamentalist Christian church. These are the books I gravitate to in an effort to make myself feel more at home in myself, being in a body and soul that once felt owned by, what I see now was, a cult. A book about how I am my own medicine? Absolutely! I spent 20 years of my life thinking that a vengeful god was the cure for my anxiety, my depression, my autoimmune disorder, all my issues. A book that talks about how I am the solution to all this was exactly what I’ve been needing in my deconstruction process.

I suppose the long and short of this review is, if you are from European descent and are at all in a vulnerable place in your life, whether because of cultural identity or spiritual identity, specifically in the realm of any earth and nature based spirituality, I recommend you not to read this book until you have reconciled those parts of you and found yourself fully comfortable in those identities. Perhaps I’m not at the right place in my life to fully appreciate it, but as of right now the book has triggered parts of me that didn’t need to be triggered at this stage of my life.

This book is a beautiful, gently written book for anyone who is BIPOC and I believe they will find so much comfort and solace in this book. However, only about 50% of this book is discussing how one is their own medicine. The rest is essentially a cascading waterfall of gentle guilt tripping. Which, gentle or not, is still guilt tripping.

At this point, most Canadians are aware of the atrocities that occurred during colonization. Of course, we don’t know every single aspect of it, one because we weren’t there and two because we are not indigenous and suffering the trans-generational trauma as a result. But by now, I would hope, the vast majority of us know that those of European ancestry have a lot to apologize for. This book, however, bases its entire premise on trying to demean and make those of European decent feel like their race is inferior, in the most gentle and soft way possible; it is prejudice masked by loving care.

And what got me was how the author is constantly talking about how she grew up in a world where the Indigenous were treated as “other” and as “on the outside”. Which is true! I’m not ever going to deny that. Up until recently, the racism issue in Canada had yet to be acknowledged and it was a long time coming. However, it feels like, in this book, her mission was to make white people feel “other” and “on the outside”. She frequently puts all BIPOC people in this bubble of beautiful wholesomeness and then puts white people on the outside saying “but you need to acknowledge the actions of your ancestors 500 years ago, but also that will never be enough, but you have to keep trying.”

Again, I will never belittle what happened during colonization. Being on any form of social media these days, it is impossible not to feel debilitating guilt over the things imperial Britain did, because that is the front lining media these days: everything the white man has done to cause destruction.

I admit, I will never know what it’s like to be a child and have to learn that your skin colour means you’re in for a lifetime of hurt. I’m thankful that I never had to experience that as a child. But as an adult, I have to live with knowing that because of my skin colour, I am immediately put in a box with white supremacists, colonizers, Catholics, and every other group of people that has historically mistreated POC. It doesn’t matter that my ancestors didn’t even set foot on North American soil until nearly the 1800’s, or that my ancestors also weren’t at all affiliated with the Catholic Church, which is the institution that spearheaded the residential school system. It doesn’t matter that I have tried my best to be an ally my whole life. It doesn’t matter that the minute I learned about racism as a child I was immediately disgusted and did what I could to speak out against it. I will always be put into the “other” box. The box where you’re told you’re a colonizer, a parasite and racist purely because of your skin colour.

This book is important. Especially for Canadians who have not been properly educated on the genocide that happened on our own soil. However, I recommend you do not go into this book thinking you will come out at the end of it feeling refreshed that you are your own medicine. There are those aspects in the book, but it is largely overshadowed by the otherness that the author places on anyone of European decent. If you are up for the challenge to educate yourself, the book does a great job of that and is a great place to start. Education on this part of Canadian history is so important, and reconciliation needs to be made a priority.

Perhaps in a few years when I am fully comfortable in my spiritual and cultural identity, I will be able to pick this book up and be able to look past the extensive parts that feel, at this point of my life, like an attack. I will for sure be trying again then. But at this point, I think it’s important for this aspect of the book to be shared so that people can make an educated decision on whether or not this book is for them at this point in their journeys. Reading it at the wrong time can cause an internal crisis to become more pronounced. When it comes to matters of the spirit and soul, these things need to be respected: not all spiritual books will be for everyone and that’s okay. As long as we can remain respectful and understanding of each other.

I haven't actually finished this book, but I've read as much as I plan to for the time being. This book walks the reader through the year with the lunar calendar of the Anishinaabe. Each moon has a name, lore, reflections, animal spirit medicine, even affirmations and invocation. This isn't a book to read cover to cover, but to sit and work with over the course of the year.

Since I live in the territory of the Anishinaabe, these teachings touch on the land as it changes and shapes me over the course of the year.

Asha is an indigenous writer and medicine woman. Her book she shares her Ojibway culture with us and how they worked with the full moons. Each chapter she would talk about the that month’s moon legend and animal spirit. Then she included a medicine journey, invocation, affirmation. I will reread this book.

It was such a beautifully woven month by month spiritual guide to inner growth and transformation. I read a chapter each month that aligned with the seasons of the book. It was always so on point and welcomed me into so many “ah ha” moments! Loved reading this book. It’s definitely something I will hold on to and keep referring back to over the years!

It took me a year to read this beautiful book and I’m so sad that I’m finished it. I borrowed this one from a friend but I will definitely buy myself a copy. This book is inspiring and insightful. It’s about Indigenous wisdom and stories but really, it’s about knowing and loving yourself. The author encourages us to get in touch with our ancestral roots as she shares hers with us.

Asha Frost's "You are the Medicine" is an invitation into a courageous vision of healing ourselves into right relation with each other and creation. As an experienced and trusted knowledge keeper of Indigenous healing practices, Asha demonstrates a sensibility in combining Indigenous storytelling and personal experience from her private healing practice, Sacred Membership and community healing circles. Using an easy to follow structure we are taken on a personal journey through the Indigenous wisdom of each moon cycle that can be revisited and rediscovered through internal journeying and reflections every month, year-over-year. This book is a powerful reminder of the  importance and responsibility of choosing healing in living everyday - for our ancestors, our future generations and ourselves. This is a deeply moving call to action that can inform and transform our lives and our world.

This is my first book by Asha Frost and I have to say that this book is filled with ancient wisdom that can be applied to return to our spiritual self. I read this as a non-indigenous person and I can say it has great knowledge that I can apply to my life. Definitely would give this book a HIGH. recommend to other readers that want to venture into indigenous culture. I feel like I would like to take a step back and learn more about the life of Anishinaabe people before diving directly into their mediations and spirituality.

Because this deals with the moon cycle, I could see myself referring back to it every month. The Indigenous wisdom and outlook would mesh well with full/new moon tarot or oracle readings.

Captivating from the first page, Asha invites us on a journey of remembering who we truly are and exploring the healing, wisdom and brilliance we are here to experience and share. This book resonates with Asha’s unique spirit and beautiful voice, and her vulnerability, strength, courage and empowerment. I feel like she is talking to me directly. She invited me to reflect, vision and heal in relationship to the beautiful stories, teachings, journeys and reflections she shares, while at the same time calling me to “be invested in learning about how colonization, oppression, and racism have affected [Indigenous] people.” In Asha’s book, the two go hand in hand in a very meaningful way. She models for us an approach of humility, respect and reciprocity, and ways to learn from Indigenous teachings without appropriating them while connecting to our own lineage, ancestors and traditions.

Although I read this book from cover to cover over a matter of a few weeks, I love that I could also choose to do a deep dive into each chapter with each of the 13 moons of the year and make it an annual journey of healing and learning. Alternatively, I could focus on whichever chapter focuses on what my heart and spirit need most at the time. There is so much richness and generosity here in the gathering of moon and animal teachings, journeys, personal stories, areas of focus, prompts for us to reflect, and affirmations in each chapter. Asha’s personal stories and experiences add depth and heart and helped me to absorb and connect more deeply with everything she shared.

Asha’s explanation of what “medicine” means, in her ways of knowing, was illuminating for me. Through this book, Asha helped me to explore more deeply what my medicines may be and what healing I need to do myself to share the gifts I have been given with others in a more loving and empowered way. Although I travel ‘my own’ spirituality and faith path, there was so much in Asha’s words that resonated with me spiritually and pointed to the deeper love, sacredness, connectedness and inherent divinity or spirit in all creation, as well as our responsibility to live ethically and with purpose.

“You are the Medicine” is the kind of book I will return to again and again. The final chapter in particular is very motivating and inspiring, weaving all of the animal teachings, gifts and messages from previous chapters together and inviting us to live our medicines and gifts and create and dream into being from a place of courage, wholeness and love.

I have been blessed to be in some of Asha’s circles both in person and online, and this book is the closest one could get, in print form, to feeling that I am sitting in circle there with her again. I imagine the audiobook version, recorded in her voice, will be incredibly powerful. I am so excited that through “You Are the Medicine” more people will benefit from Asha’s beautiful and loving spirit.

Thank you Asha for the privilege and blessing of reading this book. I look forward to the next one!

Asha Frost is an #indigenous #healer, who has graciously shared in-depth indigenous healing wisdom in this book.

She takes us through a journey of healing through 13 moon cycles - each chapter dedicated to a moon, the story of creation related to it, and the overall theme of healing in each moon. She walks us through stories first, and then the deeper wisdom behind it. We are then invited into a #meditative healing experience, where we connect with sacred spirit animals, each here to teach us something about our own selves.

I worked through this a chapter a day, and each day felt like a portal of deep healing. It moves inwards, through layer after layer, helping us to continue to meet ourselves deeply.

What I really loved about this book was how Asha emphasizes the importance of acknowledging indigenous teachings, treating them with reverence and respect, understanding how to connect to indigenous teachings without appropriating them, and really understanding the culture and history of indigenous peoples - including the dark side of it, where colonization literally wiped out thousands and thousands of people, cultures, practices and more.

She shares about the trauma endured by marginalized communities, and how multigenerational trauma continues to be felt to this day due to colonization and oppression.

I’ve learnt so much from this book, and I’ve also been able to draw incredible similarities between Indian spiritual practices (Hinduism in particular) and indigenous practices.

So much similarities, so many things I feel like I already am familiar with within an Indian spiritual context, from the role of spirit animals (so much symbolism involving sacred animals in Hinduism), to the use of things like smoke medicine (sage’s counterpart in Hinduism is uthupathi and sambrani), the significance of altars, etc.

I am ever grateful for the consistent inner guidance I receive, telling me to continually go back inwards, go back to my own roots.

All the new age things we see and hear of these days - they all come back to our own rich cultures, traditions, practices in the end ❤️

I've been one of Asha Frost's followers for a while, and I was so glad to see she was releasing a book. This way, more people can connect with her message and learn from her gentle yet impactful teaching style.

Blending Indigenous legends with Medicine practices that non-Indigenous people can use with respect, Asha has created a book that guides the reader back to powerful ways of being in the world that have either been forgotten, suppressed, or stolen, stripped of their value and repackaged as part of the New Age movement.

At every turn, Asha encourages us to see how these practices relate to our own ancestry and lineage, which is helpful on both a practical and a spiritual level. Practical if, like me, you live in the UK and have different Animal Spirits around you, and spiritual if you want to feel more connection with where you come from. This is a beautiful way to help you learn from Asha's wisdom without appropriating.

The book provides a year of guidance, arranged according to the 13 full moons of the lunar year. She provides an Animal Spirit to accompany each of the moons, and the Medicine of these Spirits helps to support the needs of the season. I love the legends that open each chapter, and Asha is a natural storyteller so these legends provide a wonderful way into the practices that follow. Guided meditations and journal prompts also give you opportunities to deepen your understanding of both yourself and your place in the world.

It's definitely a book that you can return to, and it encourages a wider return to cyclical living, seasonal awareness, and sustainability. I highly recommend it if you've been looking for a book that offers Indigenous wisdom, ways to connect with the world around you, and find your own unique flavour of Medicine.

I've read this book cover to cover, and will come back to it time and again, to support both my own personal growth and my professional work as a nature-inspired wellness coach.

As a non-Indigenous Canadian, I most enjoyed Asha Frost's practical and spiritual teachings on how to look to nature's beings - moons, animals and plants - to draw out and deepen our own unique medicines in a non-appropriating way. I also valued the opportunity to explore essential themes of reconciliation, colonization and oppression in a safe and wise space.

Her beautiful storytelling, moving journeys and motivating messages leave me feeling so resourced and empowered. I appreciate her combination of practical guidance and higher wisdom on how to access the medicine all around me. And I am in awe of the tremendous medicine available within me that I am now able to access thanks to this book.

We would all benefit from owning this beautiful book. I've already gifted it and will do so again, as I so admire Asha's work and wisdom and am happy to share it.

If I could I would give this more than five stars. This book, I read on impulse without much background, was exactly the balm my soul was asking for. A firm calling in, this book is like a hand holding you on your own path to understanding the medicine you know. By sharing her own wisdom and stories passed down, she invites you to explore what your own stories and healing are. As a white woman, I deeply appreciate the invitation to explore — permission to hold sacred what our modern society doesn’t, and also to dig back into my own lineage for my own guidance, inspired by her sharing. There are reflections in each section that are powerful and important. I can’t say enough good things about it.

What a powerful book. This book made me cry. Made me laugh and made me as a Métis woman feel seen in a way I never thought was possible. This book is so authentic and raw and real which makes it so relatable to the author. I strongly believe this is a book I will revisit and revisit often as I continue to find self love and find healing within myself.
This book empower the reader and actually gives you little journeys to go on which is absolutely incredible and so enjoyable to experience. I marked up this book so much and as soon as I finished it I wanted other people I love to read and enjoy it as much as I do. I absolutely loved that this book is based around the moon cycles. I am struggling to even find find words for how powerful this book was.

"You are the Medicine" is a sacred guide for individual and collective healing. Asha is a leader of love and courage leading us back to the wisdom of Indigenous teachings and traditions and our own inner wisdom .
A gifted storyteller, Asha weaves messages from legends with wisdom from her personal and generational wounds. She also generously shares multiple healing journeys to awaken the Medicine within and help the reader move through self-doubt, shame, jealousy, self-criticism and fear. I had tears well up throughout the book and felt a profound sense of hope for readers around the world and the generations to come. This is so much more than a book. It is what the world needs now.

What a beautiful book! The way I ended up reading this book, was almost in alignment with the moons. I am not sure, but I believe this helped the teachings of each chapter resonate and take shape in my mind, heart and spirit on a deeper level. This book has many takeaways. It is empowering. It helps you learn and appreciate nuggets of many indigenous teachings, values, and ways of being, from the lens of Asha Frost , and her teachers ….
I was grateful to have finished this book on Dec 21, winter solstice.
You are the medicine, is a kind and gentle way to share wisdom from the spirits of the 13 moons.

This is a beautiful, moving, and heartfelt book. Written by a gifted healer and teacher, the stories and prompts for reflection are personal and touching. The teachings on the monthly moons and the accompanying ceremony guide are enriching and motivating. Asha doesn't shy away from sharing the heaviness behind sharing her work as an Indigenous Medicine Woman to a largely non-Indigenous audience, and it is an honour and a privilege to engage with this sacred material. I look forward to re-reading each month's messages over and over again as the calendar turns.

Wow. Just wow! The author graciously weaves together passage after passage rich with her heritage and wisdom, and creates a book that is equal parts new and relatable. As a healer with chronic illness, there were sections that evoked something deeply personal within me. At other times I felt humbly called in to deeper critical thought, reflection and action. My copy is now riddled with dog ears of sections I plan to share with students and clients. Can't wait to recommend this book to others so I have someone to talk through it with me.

The way Asha has woven together heartfelt storytelling, her Ancestral roots + wisdom, journeys + reflection, her experience and the essential education on the impact of colonization in this book is eye and heart opening, and a powerful invitation for reclamation. ⁣

You Are the Medicine is a soul awakening journey of reconnection and reconciliation, one that I believe is needed so we may all work together to create a more healed world. ⁣

What a beautiful book. I listened to the audiobook but now want a hard copy. Asha provides meditations throughout the book that help ground you and connect you to your spiritual self. Not only does she share her personal experiences but there are so many pockets of wisdom that help you shift your perspective with animals and nature, truly encompassing the phrase, all my relations. I could easily read this book over and over again.

Absolutely stunning book. I read it over the last year for each moon month. It was so relevant and helped me see a lot of things from a different perspective. Indigenous oppression and violence combined with gaining an understanding of deep spiritual principles to apply to my life. It was such an act of bravery to write this and share this. Asha is an extremely gifted soul. I hope to meet her one day.

This book is not what I thought it would be, it has components of a memoir, which I was not anticipating and not what I thought I signed up for. I think the author was intentionally connecting herself and her healing to the examples she was giving. A memoir is well and
good, just not what I though I was choosing with this book. I did enjoy the other aspects of the book and I would like to read it (I audiobooked it) so I can focus more on the parts that drew me in.
