Unshakable Faith

Rate this book
Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver, children of slaves, overcame seemingly insurmountable barriers to find renown in the fields of education and science. Both men retained strong personalities that occasionally came into conflict. Like iron sharpening iron, their differences served to refine and define their collaborative work. An abiding faith in Christ and sense of divine appointment guided them through a world of dark prejudice with humility and self-confidence. They quietly proved their oppressors wrong and along the way made remarkable discoveries and contributions that have inestimably benefited mankind to this day.

I found this book in my church library and having just completed “Just Mercy” by Bryan Stevenson, I was interested in learning more about the struggles of my black brothers and sisters.

The book is about Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver and how their lives intersected and intertwined at the Tuskegee Institute (precursor to Tuskegee University).

A very compelling read that leads the reader to become endeared to those two great men. I wish they were more prominent in US History courses and their examples more prevalent in the current conversation of racial inequities which most everyone wants to see improved.

This is a must read for any one that loves history. It is the story of George Washington Carver, and Booker T Washington. Their life that started as slaves and ended as beloved scientist and their contribution to the world. They both had an unshakable faith in God,that propelled them thru bitter, humiliating days and both changed the coarse of history for blacks.

First time I've read anything about either Booker T. Washington or George Washington Carver and was very inspired by their stories. Unfortunately, the quality of the writing really took away from the quality of the content. Perry repeats the same details and story lines over and over again - I would be willing to bet that with a careful editor you could cut this book down by a good 1/4 or 1/3. Still, a good entry-point for those interested in learning about two very important Americans and the times they lived.

I learned a lot of history that I didn't pick up while attending Tuskegee University. There was a lot of background information that usually museums leave out. Very interesting.
