As a fae princess, Amethyst is forced into a marriage with a vicious and abusive male. She flees from his cruelty with her faithful servant and sets out on her dream to earn her freedom. The way she wants to do this is to become a pirate captain. First she must work her way up the ranks and earn a reputation. Yet will becoming a pirate captain give her the freedom from being ruled she desires or will Amethyst be more restricted than ever?

This was a fantastic start to a fantasy series. Fae, magic, and piracy! There's great world building with the fae's dominancy in the world and all the other hidden races. I loved when one would pop up now and then. Lots of details about the ships and life at sea. There is no prettiness painted over the brutality of a pirate's life here. It's bloody and tough. Amethyst must do what she needs to do to become what she dreams to be. She has my sympathy from the beginning and I love that she's such a strong and determined female. She never wavers from what she wants. There are a lot of interesting characters she meets, but none are given such depth as she has. There are steamy moments but no romance. I can't wait to see where Amethyst's life takes us next.

There is so much to say about this novel. Amethyst of the fae escapes an abusive marriage and takes to the seas to find a better life. After giving a merchant’s life a try, and observing pirates from afar, she wonders if a pirate’s life will give her what she is looking for: a life of freedom and control over her own destiny. After proving herself and joining a pirate’s ship, she discovers that being a mere pirate does not come with the freedom she envisions and decides that she wants to take a ship for herself and become a pirate captain in order to obtain the ultimate life of freedom that she desires.
I really loved the fact that there was a strong female protagonist in this story. I also loved the attention to detail throughout this novel, and how the author gave little bits of information at a time, rather than giving everything at once. I was able to slowly envision each character, as well as the ships and the ports. This story was able to transport me into the fantasy world that the author created. I also liked how certain characters didn’t just disappear when Amethyst moved on to other ships. Also, the development of Amethyst and her ideals was fascinating. How she started out wanting to have dignity and manners as a pirate captain, but as time went on and her reputation grew, so did her fears of being caught, and the nightmares from her past began to haunt her more so as time passed, consequently changing her behaviors during raids from careful and calculated, to almost reckless in nature. This story was very well written, and I look forward to reading more of Amethyst’s adventures within the Amethyst saga.

Fantasy lovers will enjoy this book about a fae who chooses to become a pirate. The world within this novel is brought to life mainly through the eyes of the main character, Amethyst. Apparently this is a prequel to the author's other book, entitled Amethyst, but I did not need to read the first to enjoy this one.

I've always believed that fantasy authors have the hardest job: creating an entire world to go with their characters. While the imaginary world in ARTP was similar to the real world, there were enough differences that I commend the author's imagination. Also, she certainly knows her way around a ship. The descriptions were clear, the vocabulary precise. I truly felt I was on board a pirate ship.

The main character, Amethyst, has had a horrible life, and therefore plans to become a pirate in order to be in charge of her own destiny. She accomplishes this by proving herself as a crew member, and then as a captain. Her previous experiences have turned her off men, but she uses them, much as they use women. It was amusing to me to see how the author turned the stereotype of male pirates plundering women around the other way.

I would not consider this book to be a romance; more of a fantasy-adventure story. There are mild love scenes. I prefer more heat, and a bit more character-building. We understood early on that Amethyst escaped an abusive marriage, and that's why she wanted to be a pirate, but we never get into her deepest thoughts, her emotions. She floats through her relationships, using them as stepping stones to get what she wants: her own ship. She has not found that equal mate yet, and I find myself eager to see who it will be, most likely in a sequel.

The sword fights are well-plotted, and the reader can certainly picture the scenes. Overall, I found this book to be an enjoyable, quick read that will leave you wanting to know more about Amethyst, her sidekick Darien, and their ship The Gargoyle. Will Amethyst become the most feared pirate? Will the fae Navy find her? And will she find a man to love? I look forward to the sequel!
(My rating of a 4 is mainly because I feel there could be a bit more showing of descriptions, not telling.)

Our heroine wants to escape her past and build a future of her own choosing. But this is not an easy path to follow and she has plenty of obstacles to overcome.

This is book one of the series, so all good there.

This is a fantasy story featuring pirates, the fae and magic. The story is well written and easy to read with a very detailed setting that offers plenty of new discoveries throughout the book. It is worth noting that it is not a sanitized world in that the heroines path is hard and there are some ugly moments. But our heroine is tough and smart, a combination that serves her well. Overall, I enjoyed this introduction to our heroine and I look forward to seeing where her story goes next.

Highly recommended.

Maybe I started into this book with too high of hopes, after seeing it advertised compared to Pirates of the Caribbean. Even so, even the synopsis on the book oversells it. I think we miss a lot of the details, with her escape from her abuser being the start, and it going off flawlessly, then having so many time skips of days, weeks, and sometimes years. I thought the abuse survivor aspect would resonate more with me, but I found myself struggling to relate to Amethyst. The author's rendition of the fae isn't what I expected either, nor is what she's going for particularly clear to me. Only towards the end do things start to pick up, then the end comes abruptly. I know it's the start of a series, but I'm not sure that I'm hooked enough to continue.

The female empowerment vibe was great and the things she had to endure before she was able to stand up for herself (although not specified) made her strong enough to make her dreams come true and no longer fear men. The writing style was annoying and I understand the language suits the theme of the story but I found it frustrating to read at times. I didn't hate it as I love a good story with a damaged and scared female lead that builds herself into a fearless queen. Maybe I'm just not into pirates 😕

Synopsis was really interesting but couldn't get past the first 4%. The weird 3rd person writing style just wasn't for me
