Unfuck America: A Respectful, Open-Minded Conversation

Rate this book
America has its head wedged up so deep, we’re looking at tonsils. What are you doing about it? If you’re like most people, you’re caught somewhere between a frustrated, partisan echo chamber and a finger-pointing media so afraid of being canceled that it’s not raising the most important issues we face as a nation. Unfuck America is that rare, multipartisan, no-bull, sometimes-surprising, unstoppably honest, come-to-Jesus book that rises above the hopped-up codewords, gets beneath bias, and dismantles assumptions. It will knock you out of your political box and personal comfort zone to deliver empirical data, hope, critical thinking, and a field manual for individual action. Drawing from his wild range of experience and travel, Mike Ritland brings his broadened perspective and pattern-disrupting, four-principle framework to interrogate the country’s border, mental health and social issues, inequality, guns, human trafficking, healthcare, and even parenting in his ruthlessly open-minded quest to save the country he fiercely dissects and loves.

A no-nonsense and rational discussion about the issues dividing our society and suggestions on how to approach these issues to generate dialogue rather than discord.

I enjoy Ritland’s podcasts and his book reads like his podcasts sound: practical, serious and genuine. He is a political nomad, never comes across as preachy and doesn’t pigeonhole himself into a left or right perspective. He is an individualist who applies facts and common-sense to make sensible points on a series of sensitive issues like guns, abortions, sex trafficking, racism, etc.

I liked the four-prong tactic he applies to viewing each issue (remove emotion, remove politics, mind your own f*ing business and don’t be a hypocrite) as it results in individuals making their own judgment/conclusion rather than following that of a political party, celebrity or media outlet.

The book has good flow and never became tedious. I think the most important aspect of the book is that he doesn’t tell you what to think, but provides guidance to help you think for yourself … something he feels is the crux of our society’s problems.

Terrible Title, Great Message!

There nothing quite like an idea that has come of age. This book, and its contents (minus the gratuitous and unnecessary language) are exactly what we need in this day and age. Conviction, truth telling, and a quick slap in the face for all of us; conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat, and anything in between.

Turn off your social media and your 24 hours a day news cycle and take a couple hours and read this book! But don’t just read it, actually consider what Mike is saying and see how you can change your thinking to better yourself, and better our country.

We are headed down a very scary path if all of us don’t stop and consider if the direction that we are all walking is the right one. Mike is standing at the crossroads and telling us to choose wisely… I for one am grateful that he stood in the gap to speak up…now it’s our turn!

A straightforward, common sense approach to Americans putting the country and their lives in order by applying his 4 basic tenets in how to address life. Pretty simple. Very effective.
From someone whom I consider to be a highly skilled interviewer, that also has the ability to navigate most every topic with no holds barred logic and critical thinking.

If you love this country, but don't like the direction it is headed I would recommend this book for steps that we as Americans can take to build bridges between people that are currently divided so that we can focus and ensuring that this remains the greatest country that has ever existed.

An insightful look at the way we think as Americans and a challenge to become more informed and educated to form our own opinions on each and every topic we are faced with.

If only more Americans would follow these ideas! Would make a great graduation gift for kids going off to college.

Big fan of Mike Ritland’s podcast so of course I had to check out his book. Differs a little bit from your typical Navy SEAL book. I can really appreciate the unbiased approach he gives in this and how he explains that we need to sometimes take a step back and remove emotion from things before we discuss them. Can be a little bit redundant at times, but I really enjoyed this one. A book I would definitely read again. You can take a lot from it. May even sway some of your current opinions on things.

I definitely don't agree with Mike Ritland on some issues but he did a fantastic job outlining how to have a productive conversation with opposing viewpoints.
