As the first Caller in living memory, Eva struggles to find her footing as the bridge between her chosen people and the mythological race known as the Kyren.
When unexpected arrivals threaten to test the newly formed alliance, Eva and her protector, Caden, fight to hold together the fast-fraying bonds before peace unravels and war once again returns. Should she fail, bloodshed the likes the Broken Lands haven’t seen since the cataclysm will stain the ground red.
The mysterious abilities that lie at the heart of Eva’s power will be her salvation or lead to her becoming an evil far worse than anything seen before. Will this land fall or be reborn into a new age?
T.A. White is the pseudonym for Tobey White. She is a USA Today Bestselling author who writes Science Fiction/Fantasy novels that contain a hint of romance.
Today, she lives in Delaware, OH with her husband and their two cats, Loki and Odin, who view themselves as her overlords. They are harsh taskmasters as long as they aren’t distracted by long naps on Tobey’s keyboard or the yummy, yummy treats disguised as the author’s plants.
This series is everything I look for in a Fantasy series. The writing is fantastic, the world building is fascinating. I want to see this made into a movie. I can envision this really cool world with all these different types of beasts and I just want to see them come to life.
The characters are just as much of a draw for me. Shea and Fallon (books 1-3) will always be my favorite but I have room to love more and Eva and Caden are right up there with them.
I like that Eva is portrayed as an underdog type of character. These big strong warriors could easily dismiss her and most do. What I like is as her story progresses, finding out how important she really is. She's such a compassionate person but she also has so many trust issues that you get to see her work through and see her character grow.
Caden is so much of what I love. He's an incredibly strong and dangerous Trateri warrior. He's also Eva's fiercest protector. The way he's always got her on his mind and his willingness to protect her at all costs is incredibly appealing. Add to that, he doesn't interfere with who she is. He knows she has to be free to do what she has been called to do, and he aids her in any way that he can. You really get to see these two blossom in this book.
There's so much more to love about this series. I really hope we have many more installments to come. There are so many side characters that I would love to see get their moment.
3.5 stars - I enjoyed it overall, despite some issues.
I think my primary problem is Eva. She's overly whiny and reluctant, practically needing to be dragged forward. I like her heart, and I get she has baggage, but it is getting really tiresome.
There were also a couple of really dumb decisions. The worst was the one that led to the ending:
I'm also going to be honest and say I'm not a fan of the Kyren. Like, at all. For all their bitching about humans not being trustworthy, they have manipulated and used Eva and the Trateri from the moment they met her in the last book. It's all been one long con. And a lot of Trateri are dead because of it. Kyren also have the gall to demand she do what they want while admitting they haven't told her what is going on, and act disappointed that she doesn't magically mind read the right thing to do in this totally unknown situation. And I literally laughed when Polaris criticized her for not accepting training. What? Who offered training? Because saying she didn't accept implies there was an offer, and there most definitely was NOT. You motherfuckers haven't even told her what a Caller IS. We know they are super rare and there hasn't been one in a gazillion years. What about that fact implies that someone out there could train her?
I think they are entitled dickheads who are using Eva, and the Trateri. If the Trateri had done the reverse, and gotten the same number of Kyren killed because the Trateri were game playing like that, the Kyren would declare war. Who needs to prove themselves here? The Kyren. And I don't get why Eva trusts them. In the very end, she seems to have some doubt about how she and the Trateri have been used and killed by Kyren games... But then she just seems to shrug it off.
The Kyren disgust me. Who wants an ally like that? Hard pass.
Caden was surprisingly great though. I really like how he has evolved. And I like his relationship with Eva a lot - they support each other without getting in each other's way... they accept each other, and each let the other fully be themselves. It's the best kind of relationship, to which all should aspire.
I also love the secondary characters, and enjoyed getting to know Fiona, Reece, Van and Gawain a bit more. And meet the new and awesome Roscoe and Ghost.
I'm hoping the series continues and gives us more Shae and Fallon.
I have enjoyed The Broken Lands series immensely. The world is creative and imaginative. The characters are full of flaws and passions. There is a centered morality amid the violence of their day-to-day living. There are lessons learned.
This last quality is what consumes The Storm's Whisper. It is more introspective than you might think. We spend a lot of time inside the hesitant head of Eva, who is a caller to the mythologicals and uncomfortable in her new role. She is being tested, she knows it, and she feels lacking. This emotion dampens the heart of this book. Thankfully, there are moments of levity that brighten the mood. A spitting Sebastian had me laughing out loud, and the antics between Jason and the Tenrin girl and Caia are always amusing. Caden is a rock, and his measured protectiveness is very appealing. I really like the dynamic between Caden and Eva, oozing with love, but allowing each to find his and her paths.
Certain morals are buried within the story, and they come out to play in a big way in the last pages. Hard work, honesty, trust, self-sacrifice, goodness, generosity are all identified as not only worthy qualities in people and mythologicals, but essential. Generosity of spirit is one that I don't read about that often in an action adventure book, and White has made it the core of her main character, Eva. She is all about giving second chances, and Jason is probably the character that embodies how offering generosity can unfold as a positive for individuals and community. He was the guy you loved to hate in The Wind's Call, and in this book he becomes a companion, a source of humor and ultimately a savior.
White also has this knack for inserting a philosophy that resonates with modern times. "Fear was like any emotion. Too much or too little of it would destroy your potential. It could keep you sharp and prevent complacency. Conversely, it could also become an anchor, binding you in place." As we enter our third year of a world stopped by Covid, this phrase spoke to me. I love when a book about a different time and place can halt me in my tracks and give insight to my own society.
That said, all that introspection made the book drag in places. A lot could have been edited or streamlined. There needed to be more plot tension to liven up the middle. However, the final 20% of the book is worth the wait.
Before going in my issues with the book, I just want to say how much I love Eva and Caden's relationship. They have such a mature, well balanced and no miscommunication in their relationship. I love how each provides space and support whenever the other needs them. Gosh, another goal couple there!
Now, the issues. It was sorta boring. Not a lot of things happened in this one. Somehow, I kinda want Eva to be on her own journey in the Broken Lands interacting with other mythologicals, than being around the Trateris. They gave her too much cuddle space. Also, villain? Not that intimidating. The bugs were more impactful than this so called Whisperer.
While I don’t think this story is anything close to the strongest from this incredibly talented author, it is still an enjoyable read. There isn’t anything really gripping that kept me turning the pages. I could easily put it aside and often got just a titch bored while reading - at least until things finally picked up at the very end. Still, I love the world and the characters so will more than likely continue.
Eva's calling has finally completed it's purpose and with Caden will have a respite from battle to settle in the Kyren lands. At least until the author decides to bring more turmoil in the Broken Lands.
I think this book concludes Eva's story thread in the series and I really hope the author will revisit this world in the future. There are too many characters I would like to read more about and the world itself has endless potential.
I'm to exhausted to write reviews for every book of this series. So this is a copy of my first review.
All the books of this series (5) get a four star rating. I didn't rated with five because at no point did I have the feeling that I need to binge this series like I did with my all time favorite fantasy series.
I loved this series. 5 books are about The Broken Lands, but there are two heroins. The first three books are about Shea and #4 & #5 about Eva. But the storyline continues through the books.
I liked both heroines and the plot was nice. I enjoyed the pace.
There’s a better plot waiting to be written for the Broken Lands world. “The Storm’s Whisper” had troublesome pacing - frequent internal musings, info dumping, unnecessary explanations, etc - that made this story frequently frustrating to read. There’s so much to be explored in this world but just come up focused plot with a lot more action. Please.
Love this author but disappointed by this book. Struggled with the pace - very slow-moving; nothing much happens and the conflicts feel manufactured. Heroine is effectively waiting around then gets rejected by the Kyren before she's had a chance to prove herself. Then at the end, we know she's a target and she's left pretty much isolated by herself with the horses, rather than with guards, just to generate an action scene finally?
I really love this world and I enjoyed Eva's first adventure. But this one didn't quite work for me... It might be me, I'm struggling to get into any book at the moment, but this book was a little dull in places. There is lots of situational analysis between lines of dialogue and it threw the pace off for me. Eva is constantly considering meanings and evaluating her responses and it got a bit exhausting, I wanted more show, less tell. Eva and Caden were charming but there wasn't much tension or growth in their relationship. I would definitely read another book in this series... But I want the Firebird Chronicles the mostest, please and thank you.
There was a lot going on in this one on many levels. Eva was still trying to get the Kyren to form an alliance with her group, but it was tough going. Then a new threat came along, one that could have taken them all out. Then there was the old threat that came back for everyone. It took them all working together to defeat the foe and hopefully bring in a new era, one of peace and working together. By the end of the book there was so much promise for them all.
I'll start by saying I really liked the previous book, book 4, this one I almost gave up on. I started and stopped so many times, I even read another book in the middle of it. I felt the author gave the backstory from all the previous events from the last 4 books but I felt the book started with no real explanation as to where Eva was and it was a bit all over the place. At 40 % it picked up a bit but this one wasn't as good as the last one.
I really enjoyed the other entries in this series, but I was severely disappointed in this one. Comparatively little happens, and the characters do an awful lot of standing around antagonizing each other. The main external conflicts (needing to solidify the alliance with the Kyren; the Whisperer's army hunting the Trateri) and internal conflict (Eva accepting her abilities) just weren't fleshed out enough to propel the story forward in a way that kept me interested. The writing itself was fragmented and unpolished. Frankly, this book reads like a draft and not a finished work.
I like T.A. White's books a lot because they are full of imagination and compelling ideas, but they all feel so frustratingly unfinished. I wish she would spend a bit more time incubating each one before releasing it into the wild. There is so much unmet potential here! I really want to unreservedly love her books, but I just can't.
Eva, is traveling to the herd lands, in effort to forge an alliance and gain allies. But get one paranoid, defensive and war-loving group to the negotiating table is difficult, and get two groups is next to impossible.
Why I started this book: White is high on my automatic buy list and I was eager for more.
Why I finished it: One gulp story, that is satisfying. White clearly knows how a military force operates, the rhythms and downtime of moving large groups of people and how that can add to pacing and adventure of a story.
The Storm's Whisper is book #2 of Eva and Caden in the Broken Lands series. TA White continues to write enthralling fantasy novels that are not **gasp** predictable. For that alone she is a 5 star author.
In this installment we get to see more about how Eva is the mediator for mythologicals and humans, how challenging that dynamic can be and how she deals with her ever present imposter syndrome (SO relatable). As the book progresses, you really get to see her trust herself and her decisions and how that makes her grow in confidence.
I enjoy Eva and Caden's dynamic throughout the book, they are supportive of each others strengths and weaknesses, but they give each other room to do what they need to do. A lot of books, once the main characters get together its like they can never ever be separated again. This is more realistic in that they each have different responsibilities and that may mean you are not glued at the hip.
I liked that we got to know Fiona, Ghost, Roscoe, Reece and Drake more, as well as meet more mythological creatures!
I felt that the army/the whisperer was kind of sprung on us, I wish there was more development of this character because it felt like it was here for this book and gone the next. I'm curious to see where the next book goes and if it will move on to other characters like Mist or we will see a 3rd installment of Eva/Caden. I feel like White does a better job in other series of building the plot to the next book, I don't feel like I have an idea of where this is going other than something with the Kyren/Mythologicals.
Overall, TA white is a strong fantasy romance author and her books never disappoint! The first broken lands, the Aileen Travers and the Firebirds books are still my favorite but this book is solid and something I would read again! Its not often that sequels hold up to the first books in the series, but this definitely does. I give it 4/5 stars.
3.75 unfortunately. I loved the Pathfinder series and this was an interesting spin off but ultimately not as gripping.
Eva is a herd mistress that has become a Caller. Her ability allows her to communicate with the mythologicals and she needs to build faith with them. A series of events happen where it looks like she failed but really it was all planned out by schemers.
A creepy character called the Whisperer was introduced. Caden was rock solid but I didn’t connect with him.
This is a fabulous world with lots of imagination and I really admire TA White but this one just didn’t click for me. I found myself skipping pages of explanation just to get to the next page where there was dialogue. The dialogue and characters are fun, there just seemed to be lots of pauses and words that made it dry for me.
since i found out that author is planning more books about eva and caden after wind's call, I WAS DAMN SO EXCITED BCS I LOVE THEM SM and they are one of my like favorite couples in fantasy rn.
Finally the day came this book got published and i was literally running to ebook shop to buy it (also why its not on bookdepository :().
i wasn't disappointed. im repeating myself from previous reviews about the broken lands when i say that this book still proves the fact that author really created amazing fantasy world in this series and you are not bored whatever comes next and i wish more people read it.
This is another excellent book from one of my favourite authors. I love how you get pulled into this magical and unique world, then get swept away in the action and drama. Loved catching up with old favourites and meet new characters. A great series which I highly recommend.
I love the world of the Broken Lands. It was the first world of T.A. White's I discovered. I usually love these stories but this chapter of Eva and Caden's story, for me, is a good book with the potential to be great.
I felt like some things were never explained – like the origin of the bugs, and some things just seemed to directly contradict what we already knew of people (Van and Chirron). But we got to see a lot of my favorites from the earlier books (Buck and Witt for example) and there's definitely more to learn about the mythologicals. I loved seeing Eva grow more confident in her abilities as a Caller and I love learning more of what makes Caden tick.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves this world. Just be prepared to feel as if there's a lot more to come. There's lots of action, and I shed a few tears – all the elements are there for a great book.
As always there are a lot of typos, grammar issues, wrong words used etc. I know a lot of people aren't bothered by typos – but for me a good proofreader would make a huge difference to this book as I found myself being pulled out of the story a lot. I was lucky enough to receive an advanced reader copy to review so maybe these will have been fixed, but past experience tells me they won't be.
Eva is the Kyren’s chosen Ambassador to broker an alliance between their two races. At their invitation she and Caden take a group of Trateri into the herd lands to form a colony and become the bridge between the two groups. Evil follows them and threatens the threads of their alliance. Eva must figure out her new abilities in order to save the man she loves and the two people’s her duty calls to her to protect.
It seems a simple synopsis but there was a LOT happening in this novel! Eva is the Kyren’s chosen Ambassador, but when trouble knocks on the Trateri’s door, her alliance seems to dissipate leaving Eva reliant upon the Trateri’s strength and her own uneducated skills as a Caller. Despite the dissipating alliance with the Kyren, Eva still finds strength in her friends and shows incredible leadership when it comes to her responsibility for other side characters like Brisa a young Tenrin who becomes attached to both she and Jason, her apprentice and future Trateri warrior. These subplots are what ultimately bring the book together and give it the meat it needs to reach its conclusion.
I mention Jason, above, because despite the love story between Eva and Caden, Jason’s character shows the most growth in this story arc. Eva has her calling and sometimes seems to struggle finding the strength and will to overcome her obstacles. Jason acts as the impetus to drive her character. As her apprentice and responsibility it’s through her interactions with him that we see her “become” her destiny. I liked that for him as a character because despite his whiny self-involved beginnings he has turned into a strong character and has become one of my favorites.
Did I like Storm’s Whisper as much as the previous novel? No. Despite it reaching its conclusion I didn’t feel the tension of the first novel, or any of the first three in the series. Even so, it was a decent story, and showed knew aspects to the world these stories reside. So to me it was worth the four or five hours of reading. I do hope she picks Jason as the next character to follow in the series. ❤️❤️❤️❣️
I've enjoyed this series since the beginning. However, the last 2 books have become much more about describing people and groups with clichéd phrases. Everyone knew the Tratterie were fighters of... or "they were nothing if not..." ruthless, closed mouth, violent, love of a fight. I would strongly prefer to read brief background stories that highlight those traits instead describing them repeatedly.
I enjoyed the involvement of the Karen and Tenrin. However, we know very little about the evil character and what actually happened. That would have been an interesting, short background story illustrating why we should be worried for our main characters. I'd like more back story on Caden too. Something that illustrates why he became a protector rather than describing his thoughts. Just a reader's opinion and preferences.
This might be the book of this series I liked the least. That's not to say I didn't like it, but it was a lot of talking and little doing. Many descriptions and inane conversations that kept the action from moving on. I'll love to continue reading, the characters and worldbuilding are still quite interesting, but I hope the stories that come have more meat to it, not just beautifully worded sentences.
I've enjoyed the Broken Lands series up until now, but this book was dreadful, between a DNF and 1 star. The plot was plodding and manufactured, the characters shallow and repetitive, and the dialogue juvenile and annoying. Not the author's best outing by far. An effort to finish and not recommended.
So much internal dialogue. Soooo much. You could cut the page count in half and get the same story. I have always had some eye roll moments in this series due to just ridiculous lines, but this booked topped them all for cheese.
Rated 4.5 stars. I received an ARC for an honest review.
Welcome back to the world of the Broken Lands where mythical monsters are adapting to their new place and one Caller stands amidst the changing tides. T.A. White continues Eva's story with her crazy Trateri friends, majestic (and ruthless and snobbish) mythicals, and a growing sense of danger and unease. Acting as the lifeline between a Trateri-Mythical alliance, Eva's adventure lands her in the middle of a dangerous game of chess that the stubborn Kyren are more than happy to let her play blind. While she struggles to balance what is expected of her and her own vision of success, secretive powers are at play that could spell more than just a loss of alliance, but a loss of life. Everything is not what it seems once again in the Broken Lands and Eva must learn her place as a Caller and a Trateri before all that could be is lost.
Personally, I wasn't sure if the next Broken Lands book would continue Eva's story or move on to another character. However, White spins a story that naturally progresses and evolves as Eva learns more about herself and her place among the mythicals. A deeper look into the intricates of mythical societies throughout this book highlights White's incredible skill of worldbuilding. Her characters are unique, realistic, flawed, and oh so clever. The basic understanding and foundation White laid in Eva's first book, The Wind's Call, sets the stage for an exploration of mythological beings that the reader cannot help but be consumed by. While the action of this book is more built towards politics and little intricacies, White still allows Caden to play with his weapons.
Overall, another all-nighter, what's-going-to-happen-next, classic T.A. White that will leave readers scrambling to put together the dots and craving for more.
