The only problem is, it doesn’t work. With no warning. No explanation.

The first book in the Percivious Trilogy from husband-wife author duo JJ Cook & AJ Cook, MD, Percivious Insomnia sets a unique and original course for fiction of the future, and paints a timely, prescient portrait of today’s globalized society… and what may exist beyond the realm of our current understanding.

Publisher's Weekly: The Cooks’ impressive SF medical thriller, the first of a trilogy, overflows with intriguing ideas. The main plot focuses on a new wonder sleep drug, Noctural, which runs into a snag. Despite successful preliminary trials, Noctural fails to work for a test subject with chronic insomnia and other people suffering from sleep deprivation. Figuring out why falls to a researcher for the Big Pharma company behind the medication. Other story lines are less conventional. One involves Human Pinnacle Theory, which posits that humans have reached the pinnacle of their evolution, and thus are at risk for extinction because of an inability to adapt to Earth’s changing environment. Another centers on a secret U.S. government dossier revealing that “ancient humanoid cousins” existed along with the dinosaurs and were the dominant life form at the time. Before leaving the planet, they created a DNA time capsule that led to the evolution of homo sapiens. The Cooks, a married couple, alternate between the plot threads easily. Michael Crichton fans will look forward to the sequel. (Self-published)

Loved the concept of this medical thriller/sci-fi novel by AJ Cook, a Canadian physician, and his marketing whiz wife, JJ Cook. The world is on the edge of collapse due to an insomnia pandemic. Dr. Cooper Delaney thinks Noctural — a new sleep-aid with no side effects in testing — will bring relief. Except that it stops working for no reason.

This was a fascinating read as the world faced a TRUE pandemic. Fortunately for us, the COVID-19 vaccine appears to actually protect against the deadly virus. I can’t imagine what the world would be like had it failed to work so effectively. We’d still be in isolation, wearing masks in perpetuity.

While I loved Percivious Insomnia’s premise, I found its execution challenged by a chaotic plot line and character mix. That said, the authors have bold ideas that with judicious editing, could land the next two books in the planned trilogy on bestseller lists. Best of luck!

Got the review copy from authors.

Dnfing after 100 pages.
It started with so much potential, I was looking forward to a banging story and I was really enjoying the concept. But so many characters POV made it hard to track everyone plus so much detail was a turnoff.
And again negative characters are Muslim, so no can't continue it.

Received an ARC through Netgalley as well as a physical ARC from the author's.

I liked the premise of the book, but the many POV, the masses of unnecessary information, and the telling (Show, don't tell!) made it a tough read.

I got this ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The premise of this book was interesting - an insomnia pandemic and the MC, who tries to find a cure for it. Unfortunately, the execution was clunky.

The beginning of the book was very promising, but it quickly became, quite frankly, a mess.

Each chapter starts with an hour, a location and a character. This would suggest that it's a multiple POV book. Spoiler alert: it is not. Not only because further in the book we get two or three characters (or even just "A Team") at the beginning of chapters, but also because, during a single-character chapters, we still jump between different characters - we get to know their backstory, their thoughts, feelings, etc., which, although doesn't sound bad, can be distracting. Especially during a certain motorcycle chase, where it was straight-up disorienting, as we switched between three characters, while being bombarded with proper names of streets, squares and bridges.

Although some of the concepts presented in the book were interesting, the plot was quite boring in more than a few places, and I can put a finger on why exactly, at least in some of the cases. You know one of the golden rules of writing "Show, not tell"? Well, it's quite obvious that the authors of this book did not. There is so many moments, where an important event is only recalled by a character later. In some places, we are only informed what the characters are talking about, instead of getting an actual dialogue. And instead of figuring out what the characters are like by ourselves, we are being fed with "X liked to...", "Y was...", "One of Z's favourite things to do was...". This, coupled with the aforementioned POV switching and some paragraphs that just seemed a little bit random, made this book a difficult read. It was hard to focus on reading, as the narration was jumping from one character to another, from an event that happened in the past to what's happening currently, from a childhood memory of one of the characters to a conversation they're having with another of the characters.

Taking into account all of this, plus a few problematic fragments in the book, despite the good premise and interesting concepts, I cannot rate this book higher than 2 stars.

I was captivated by this book from the beginning. The avalanche chapter is one I will never forget. But, something interesting happened by the end of chapter 10, I was hooked, couldn’t put it down. I stayed up all night, with my own case of insomnia, with the novel to blame. I haven’t done that with a book in a very long time and I read 20 books a month. To say that this book is character driven is a HUGE understatement. It is character piloted! I can’t remember the last book where I felt like I knew each one intimately, and that in my opinion was no easy feat for the author because there are so many of them, all intertwined.

It is less like reading a book and more like reading a movie – if that were possible. The heading at the beginning of each chapter set the scene and the fast pace of the story was enhanced by twists, turns and surprizes. On more than one occasion I was left thinking I had it figured out, only to be wrong again. Wrong, but never disappointed, not once.

The setting, a pandemic, is as timely as it gets, and the problems faced by the characters are timelier than ever – corruption, a jet set crowd, society on the brink of disaster…. with only a handful in a position to save the planet – in an attempt to return humankind to what we were always meant to be.

Pacing, characterization and dialogue that rings incredibly true brings the story alive and will leave you wanting more. I can’t wait for the second instalment. The dialogue never repeated the narrative, not once, and there was not one slow part, not one sentence that could have been spared.

It was my favourite read this summer and I highly recommend it, especially if you are looking for a new thriller/sci-fi adventure. If you have been waiting for something new, a story never heard before, you will not be disappointed. Percivious Insomnia should be held up as an example of fiction of the future.

I received the ARC in exchange for my honest feedback.

Percivious Insomnia is a multiple genre book but I would like to class it under a science fiction book. In the initial few chapters the authors just introduced the characters which is in my opinion was a very smart move because once you know the characters, you connect with them better, you Sail through the book without any unexpected storms.Percivious Insomnia is a different book from head to tail- the structure, the writing pattern, the beginning and not to forget the awesome title. These qualities make the stand out!

After a very long time I finished a book in one sitting. Am I disappointed with any aspect of the book? no chance!!It's an extra ordinary book, the turn of events are so compelling that it will make you believe that the whole story is real. The book was 240 pages long but it felt like 24. I must say, good content speaks for itself. This book was way above my expectations. I just can't stop myself from thinking about the sequel.

I am not really a sci-fi fan, I don’t care for Star Trek. Star Wars is better, but still not something I would watch if I was alone on movie night. I thought I would take a chance on this medical thriller, sci-fi adventure, and I requested the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. I can honestly say this book has converted me. I think it is because it’s way more than sci-fi, in the traditional sense. This novel has it all: suspense, intrigue, plot twists, murder and yes, even romance. But most of all It was the cast of characters that hooked me. They draw you in, one by one, multi-dimensional, complex and true to life.

As a mother, I connected with the children in the story. Specifically, their exploitation. The story will literally haunt you and you will wonder if it could possibly be true.

I had a hard time putting it down, which I know sounds cliché, but it is no easy feat for a mother of 3 boys. The book ends on a huge cliff hanger, which leaves you upset on one hand because it is one of those books that you don’t want to end; but also relived because you know there will more to come.

Hooked on this story, eagerly awaiting book 2. I haven’t been this caught up in a novel since Margaret Atwood's 'Handmaids Tail'!

The story is captivating and thrilling. It takes you to different parts of the world, and it gives you a taste of fiction, science, suspense, and much more!

I was hooked after 3 chapters and devoured the book in a few days!

While in the midst of a pandemic, coming across the book plot of another pandemic dealing with insomnia, I was sold!
But I guess the book was just all shiny on the top and dull inside. It became cumbersome to read multiple POVs and flitting through them back and forth. The premise was unique but the storytelling got lengthy and after a while nothing was really happening.
I really wanted to like this book but I just couldn't.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for an e ARC in exchange of an honest review.

Percivious Insomnia is a traveled clinical spine chiller and a science fiction novel composed by the creators JJ Cook and AJ Cook. There is a sleep deprivation pandemic across the globe that is forestalling individuals to work appropriately. Different individuals are engaged with the exploration. Dr Cooper Delaney, who had been with Proteus for a very long time has made a miracle drug that is 100% successful and doesn't have any results.

It is less similar to perusing a book and more like perusing a film – if that were conceivable. The heading toward the start of every part laid the right foundation and the high speed of the story was improved by turns, turns and surprises. Over and over I was left reasoning, I had it sorted out, just to not be right once more. Wrong, however, never baffled, not once.

The story begins moderate and doesn't really get truly fascinating until in a real sense part of the way through the book. At that point it simply heightens and turns out to be significantly more exciting and fascinating. Notwithstanding, I would it appeared well and good for the story to be a piece more slow from the outset, since it was permitting us to meet the characters, become acquainted with them, their situations in the story (such as their positions), and furthermore fabricating the reason and what is the issue here.

There's a great deal of exciting bends in the road and double-crossing happening that it nearly was difficult to monitor it, however, made the story intriguing, particularly since I'm certain the manner in which individuals acted in this book is actually how they would have acted in our reality or timetable when attempting to discover a fix, yet additionally assume the acknowledgment.

Through this book, writers take you on an astonishing excursion into an alternate world. The depiction of scenes is heavenly. Outstanding amongst other sci-fi I have perused as of late. Enthusiastically prescribed this book who needs to go to an alternate world with a tinge of science fiction content. With the startling closure of this book, I am too inquisitive to peruse the following part.

Review: For the most part I really liked this book. The concept of the book was interesting and for the most part the character development was well done. I also liked the pacing of this book.

However, the execution of this book was a bit short. The plot didn’t keep me intrigued after a bit and the book didn’t do well at showing and not telling. The book also didn’t have that much world building.

Verdict: It was good, just needs more editing.

I want to thank the authors and publisher first for sending me a free copy of the book.

This book’s genre is a little outside of my comfort zone, but the synopsis really pulled me in and I was curious to see how this book would go.

This is more of a scifi story than I expected, which is nice since I thought it was more of a medical-based thriller only, but there’s also a very nice scifi twist to it.

The story starts out very slow and does not actually get really interesting until literally half way through the book. Then it just escalates and becomes much more thrilling and interesting. However, I would at it made sense for the story to be a bit slower at first since it was allowing us to meet the characters, get to know them, their positions in the story(such as their jobs), and also building the premise and what the book is about.

The story follows many different scientists trying to make a cure for an epidemic of insomnia sweeping the nation. No one has any idea why it’s happening, and the one drug that should be a cure is not working. And the people who believe something off planet is responsible are basically being written off as fanatics and crazy. But are they?

There’s a lot of twists and turns and backstabbing happening that it almost was hard to keep track of it, but made the story interesting, especially since I’m sure the way people acted in this book is exactly how they would have acted in our world or timeline when trying to find a cure, but also take the credit.

I will say there were a tad bit too many POVs for my taste. And although the chapter will start out with a certain POV, usually some time during that chapter the POV would change to someone else in the same scene and it would get confusing. I had to really pay attention and to catch it many times to make sure I was reading about the character I thought I was 😅

It was definitely different from my typical go to book, but I enjoyed it. I found it rather fascinating. The ending left a bit of a cliffhanger and I’m curious to see how the rest of the story goes 😊

🌸There are 60 chapters in this book but honestly you won't get bored with the content of this book. The first few chapters of the novel gives the introduction of the characters which is really helpful. Each character is introduced brilliantly, all are well described and the role played by them is good and different from each other. The most unique thing about this book is that, in the beginning of every chapter, the time and the place is mentioned so that we can connect to the story till the end.

🌸I loved the way the authors kept you on your toes. The constant change of scenery from Victoria to New York to Paris is fantastic. Through this book authors take you to an amazing journey into a different world. The description of scenes is superb. One of the best science fiction I have read recently. Its an intriguing storyline which definitely attracts the readers. Highly recommended this book who wants to travel to a different world with a tinch of sci-fi content. With the unexpected ending to this book, I am super curious to read the next part.

Rating: 4.5/5

Genre: Sci-Fi

💌This book is beautifully written. Each character is realistic, unique and well introduced. You quickly know them all and can create your own image of what they would look like in real life, or who they remind you of.

💌The book emphasized character development to an e tend that it felt overwhelming and exhausting.
The multi POV was generally a great idea for the book, though here each dedicated chapter did not necessarily stick to that one single POV

💌I loved the idea behind this book.  It begins with new information being released about the future of mankind and our evident downfall that is approaching.  What would really happen if we found out that everything we thought we knew about life itself was a lie!

💌The authors take you on an amazing journey! Each character is introduced brilliantly and the scenes are described poetically drawing you into this book! A must read!

💌The introduction to all the different characters was great and I felt like the authors created a really good cast for this story.   The concept makes for a thrilling tale, particularly that last chapter.  I had a "Wow" moment at the end that makes me excited for the next book.

💌It was my favourite read this winter and I highly recommend it, especially if you are looking for a new thriller/sci-fi adventure. If you have been waiting for something new, a story never heard before, you will not be disappointed. Percivious Insomnia should be held up as an example of fiction of the future.

While amidst a pandemic, running over the book plot of another pandemic managing sleep deprivation, arouses curiosity automatically! What happens when you find a cure for insomnia with no side effects at all? Yes... we all are imagining that! But what happens next when we find that cure failed!?

Sleep deprivation pandemic is clearing the globe but Dr. Cooper Delaney accepts he has the appropriate response: Noctural, another tranquilizer—which has no side effects and tests showed greater efficiency. But later, the sudden failure of the drug left Dr. Cooper Delaney completely disheartened and with so many unanswered questions.

It is less similar to pursuing a novel and more like pursuing a film – if that were conceivable. The heading toward the start of every part set everything up and the quick movement of the story was upgraded by turns, turns, and surprises.

The main book in the Percivious Trilogy from spouse wife writer team JJ Cook and AJ Cook, MD, Percivious Insomnia sets a special and unique course for the fiction of things to come and this even provides us a different viewpoint to the prevailing situations which otherwise we aren't able to understand with this much depth.

This was the ideal read for me to end November with! So engaging! Get this book as I can't wait for the other part!

This is a review of the audio version of this book.
Except for occasional profanity, this was very captivating
Although there are several different characters and ongoing situations, the author has successfully written this suspenseful drama which is quite easily followed.
A pandemic - worse than COVID-19 in many ways - which ends up bringing an unusual group of “specialists” together. A top Pharmaceutical company has used top scientific research to find a cure. What they discover is totally incredible!
The characters are well portrayed and feel very real. The scenes are equally described in a way that is easily visualized. As the story progresses, so does the momentum and intrigue. The final short chapter cleverly leads into the next book of the series.
Other than being slightly repetitive, plus, I would have liked the occasional profanity left out, this was an excellent, creative tale. I feel it would make a great movie series most would enjoy.
Alexander Stavrou did a commendable job in the narration. At first, I was slightly annoyed at the deep, raspy tone of his voice, but as the audio progressed, and his excellent performance, his voice was no longer a problem.
I offer a Four and a Half Stars rating for this audiobook.
This audiobook was gifted to me with no pressure, whatsoever, for a positive review. This is my honest review.

Percivious: Insomnia is a the first part of the trilogy novel by JJ.Cook and AJ.Cook. The Novel is a Science Fiction. It has medical, technology and a hint of outer space live all mix in one novel.

An insomnia epidemic is sweeping the world and people is struggling with fatigue and to do the daily works. A scientist at Pretous:a pharmaceutical company think he has the answer for this epidemic with this new invention " Noctural".

But something happens and everything he knew was about to change. Is this epidemic was really a reflection of the Human evolution coming to a halt or something big, something unexplainable , something out of this world was the reason behind this.

The first few chapters contains the introduction and details about the characters and how they are connected in the story. I also like that each chapter start with the name of the characters whom that chapters is being presented by.

The novel has everything from a scientist discovery, a business man looking to profit from the epidemic, a scientist looking to prove his creation right, an underworld connection who is looking to keep the information contained, a new species discovery and FBI and CIA in the mix to keep the world from discovering the age old secrets about civilization and not to forget a great Car Chase. I absolutely love that car chase and how the author has described it so beautifully, you can literally imagine it happening.

Let's start by saying this narrator has such a smooth voice that it makes the book really easy to listen to. That being said, he doesn’t do "voices" so it's all at one level voice the whole way. I usually like when we can hear the different characters.

*I am not sure if I read the old or the re-released version*

This story is really interesting in the concept behind it. The author really excels at having that "twist" in the idea and enough science to make you think.

That being said, I feel like it this book could use some refinement. There are many POVs we pop into here, many convoluded backstories and room and personality descriptions that we go into that just aren't needed. We're juggling so much useless information at one time that the really interesting parts are getting buried and their importance is dulled down. The author seemed so connected with each individual and each situation that we head-hopped so they could show us each minor character's backstory and reason for being there, but you really only care about 3 of them.

From the chapter headings and intros, you are looking at a close 3rd POV, which slips in and out of head-hopping which may be an attempt at omniscient, but it would have been much stronger sticking to max 4 POVs and staying in close 3rd, because that's where the story is the strongest.

I'd definitely be interested in reading more books by this author for their imaginative concepts.

Percivious Insomnia is a jetset medical thriller and a sci-fi novel written by the authors JJ Cook and AJ Cook. There is an insomnia pandemic across the globe that is preventing people to function properly. Various people are involved with the research. Dr Cooper Delaney who had been with Proteus for eight years has made a wonder drug that is 100% effective and doesn't have any side effects.

Malcom Schwartz who feels more fatigue when he woke up than when he drift off to sleep tried the wonder drug but it failed. When Malcom was put again to sleep test, Cooper noticed that he is burning 200 calories per hour during the sleep test. Cooper couldn't believe the test results. Tests were conducted multiple times but they all showed failure. Cooper wants to find the answer to so many questions. Grab a copy of this book and read it to know what will happen next.

The storyline and the concept is unique and interesting. Many people suffer from insomnia nowadays. Those readers will definitely enjoy this novel. Language of the book is interesting. There are so many characters however in this novel to keep track of. This is so because it's a character driven novel. I binge read this novel on weekend and I enjoyed it. A cast of characters list at the beginning or end of the book would have been great. Overall, it's a nice story that I like to recommend to my fellow readers.

𝑻𝒊𝒕𝒍𝒆: Percivious Insomnia
𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓: JJ Cook & AJ Cook

𝑴𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘:
Percivious: Insomnia is a novel that belongs to multiple genres. An Insomnia pandemic has plagued the world. Cooper Delaney had been working with Proteus for eight years. Jon Cameron hired Cooper with an offer that he couldn't refuse. Jon had been the director of research for five years before they met. Cooper has made a drug Noctural that had become the forerunner as the year’s drug of choice. It's a sleep aid with no side effects—no aftertaste, drowsiness, dependency, or reduced effectiveness over time.

When Jon called Cooper to this cabin, he told him that Malcom Schwartz who is the head of the genetic research at Genetech tried the wonder drug but unfortunately it didn't work. Cooper couldn't digest this fact as the drug is 100% effective as stated by the previous test results. Other people join in but will Cooper find out why the drug failed?

The plot of the story is nice. Pace of the story is medium and I was easily able to follow the entire story. Cover photo is nice and so is the title. Characters are well described one by one. Length of this novel is appropriate. If you love reading thrillers or sci-fi stories then go ahead with this one.

Percivious Insomnia
By
JJ Cook & AJ Cook

Percivious Insomnia is the latest sci-fi novel that I have read. It's a medical thriller too. It is the first book in the Percivious trilogy written by husband-wife author duo JJ Cook & AJ Cook. The book started with the introduction of characters one by one. Cooper Delaney is the main one who has made a wonder drug to cure insomnia. But the problem is that the drug failed on one user. Cooper who went for a skiing trip had an accident that landed him to a hospital and then on a wheel chair. But Cooper is so curious to know why wonder drug test to cure insomnia failed on Malcom Schwartz. The energy loss at 200 calories per hour occurring during the period of REM sleep made absolutely no sense. What is wrong with Malcom or the test? Will it be figured out? The way this novel is written and the characters are described is nice. Story is gripping making it an unputdownable book. Cooper's character interested me the most. Authors has done great job in their debut novel. This novel is set in Washington, Victoria, NYC, etc. I haven't heard a story with similar plot earlier. So, I enjoyed this story.

🎩This book has been written wonderfully. It is believable, special and well presented to each character. You know them all easily and can create your own impression of what they look like or recall in real life.

🎩The chapters are brief and concentrate on individual characters, times and places. It was brilliantly done to incorporate all the various characters.

🎩Unforeseen associations are made when switching between characters. It is believable, special and well presented to each character. The chapter title is quite cool, named mostly for the characters.

🎩The first chapters of the book include a very useful reference to the characters.

🎩Every character is beautifully presented, everybody is well portrayed and their role is nice and different. The most interesting feature of this novel is that the time and location are listed at the start of each chapter in order to interact with the plot until the end.

🎩I highly recommend this to those who enjoy science fiction and to those in the medical industry.

🔷 BOOK: Percivious Insomnia
🔷 AUTHOR: JJ Cook & AJ Cook

Review:
I enjoy Sci-fi and thriller stories, therefore I decided to read Percivious Insomnia by the authors JJ Cook & AJ Cook. Story starts with the introduction of the most intense character Dr Cooper Delaney. His drug Noctural has shown 100% effectiveness during a test. This is to cure the humans from the insomnia that has plagued the world. But when the wonder drug test failed and even Cooper don't know the reason behind it, humanity gonna be in danger. There are other characters in this character driven novel: Jon Cameron, Malcom Schwartz, Will Maelish, Sean Irwin, etc. Read this novel to dive deeper into this world of insomnia.

The world building is an intense part of this novel. Narration is remarkable and smooth. As a debut novel, authors has done great job. Those who are looking for a thriller/sci-fi adventure shouldn't miss to pick this one. I am sure that it will not disappoint you. It is a fiction of the future that will interest readers of different genres.

It has everything: mystery, drama, surprises, assassination and yes, even romance. However it was primarily the cast that hooked me on characters. One by one, they draw you into a multi-dimensional and dynamic way of life.

The early chapters of the book include a very useful introduction to the characters. Every individual is beautifully presented, all well-defined and their position is good and different. The only thing about this book is that the time and the location are listed at the beginning of each chapter so that we can relate to the plot before the end.

The chapters are concise and concentrate on the individual characters, times and places. It has been brilliantly presented to all the characters.

Unpredictable relations are formed as they pass between characters. It's realistic, special and well introduced to each character. The chapter title is very cool, called specifically for characters.

There was a great introduction to all the characters. I feel that the developers crafted an amazing plot. This concept is an exciting novel, especially the last chapter.

Book: Percivious Insomnia
Rating: 5/5
Author: J.J. and A.J. Cook.

An insomnia pandemic is sweeping the globe, leaving people unable to function and society on the brink of collapse.
Dr. Cooper Delaney believes he has the answer: Noctural, a new sleep-aid-one with absolutely no side-effects-which in early testing shows 100% effectiveness.
The only problem is, it doesn't work. With no warning. No explanation.
A jetset medical thriller meets sci-fi adventure with an unforgettable cast of characters, Percivious Insomnia presents an alternate history so compelling that it could possibly be true.

It takes you to different parts of the world, and it gives you a taste of fiction, science, suspense, and much more. The way all the characters are presented is one of the best qualities of this book. It’s an action packed mystery book. The language is clear and easy to grasp.

Would like everyone to recommend this book to all sci-fi lovers out there and thank you JJ and AJ Cook for giving me the opportunity to read and review your book!
