Overall score: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (beginners) | ⭐️⭐️ (intermediate learners, unless you have not been exposed that much to Japanese)
🟢Content: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (beginners) | ⭐️⭐️ (intermediate learners) Now, don't get me wrong, I do not regret buying this book because I bought it not only to satisfy my curiosity regarding its contents but also because I love ゆか先生 and I wanted to support her work. Even though I consider this book to be an amazing tool to fix typical beginner (N5 or N4 without much native input) errors, I think recommending it for an intermediate level is a bit of an stretch for its price. I did learn a few things from the book (I have around 10 pages bookmarked), but this was certainly not for a person preparing the N3 who has already been consuming a lot of Japanese content.
🔵Comprehension: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ One of the things I enjoyed the most about this book (and probably the reason why it was suggested for intermediate learners) is that all explanations are included in both English and Japanese! This means you can try to grasp the concept using only Japanese and, in case that's not enough, check out the English version 😃 Another good point is that each "main expression" includes at least 2 example sentences (with "secondary expressions" having one), which helps a lot to know how it is used in real life. Furthermore, the explanation of each expression is done in a conversation format, which makes it feel natural and as if you were directly getting an answer from the teacher.
🔴Design: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Besides 2 typos I found, it's impeccable. Very clean, each section is in a different color and the cute drawings make you want to keep reading.
🟣Multimedia: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Audio clips introducing an example sentence for each expression can be found on Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/5heh7YN...), making it convenient to review them. However, I think having all the example sentences included in the textbook and even the entire explanations in Japanese would have been great (specially considering the price of the book).
🟡Entertainment: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Usually we would not include this category in a textbook but I think that the effort put into making this book fun was worth mentioning in this review. There are quite a few fun jokes throughout the book and even conversations between ゆか先生 and あやの先生 that simulate a bit of their daily life working at 日本語の森. I think the fact that this book allowed me to learn a bit more about the people working behind 日本語の森 made reading the textbook feel sort of like reading a story. This certainly made reading it not feel like a chore at all.
🟠Output: ⭐️ Just a warning that this book contains no exercises to practice and its meant to serve as reference material.
I have been watching Nihongonomori on youtube / been subscribed to their JLPT prep service for a while now, so I was really excited to hear that Yuka Sensei was releasing her own book!
Most of the words / phrases she goes over aren’t usually found in textbooks and can only be learned through experience. I can definitely recommend this to anyone, even advanced learners.
As a fellow language teacher, I admire that she was able to collect her thoughts and then get them published! It gives me motivation to do the same someday.
