‘There’s bodies raining from the sky and the city is tearing itself in two...’
A decade after the events on Gruinard Island, Lachlan Maclean thought he’d succeeded in making a better life for himself and his young family. But he was mistaken.
First, it was the desperate homeless and pitiful junkies, who had seemingly jumped from drab Glasgow sky-scrapers. Callous indifference was the reaction from a city struggling to make sense of the global pandemic.
When an asylum-seeker was next, followed by a promising young para-athlete, it became obvious they’d been thrown to their deaths. There was only mild interest from the media.
Glasgow had more important things to think about, it was the start of the football season.
But when fans of bitter rivals, Celtic and Rangers, suffer a similar gruesome fate, the city finally wakes up to the fact there is a maniac on the loose.
Now the city is in an uproar. Violent crime and mass disorder events spiral into anarchy, the papers start screaming for answers, yet the police have no leads.
It’s time for an unholy alliance to return to the blood-splattered streets of Glasgow.
A millionaire albino killer, an ice-blonde assassin, an ex-gang boss and a retired police inspector are forced to work together to battle a foe who will stop at nothing to satisfy a thirst for revenge.
Alex Breck was born in Scotland in 1962. He studied at Aberdeen University. The many paths he has trodden since then include driving an ice-cream truck in Kansas, banking in San Francisco and teaching English (badly) in Madrid. He's been a director of both a health club and a meat factory but would stress there was no obvious connection between the two. He lives quietly on the beautiful West Coast of Scotland where he likes to ride his bike up and down hills much to the consternation of his family. The name Alex Breck is a pen name using an old family name and that of a historical ruffian who might be found in the fine novel Kidnapped.
Not having read the first in this series, I really wasn't sure what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised.
This book is full of strong characters that grow on you as the story develops. They are a disparate bunch of people from various walks of life but they work well together. It did take me a while to get to grips with the story; it was quite confusing to begin with but I think that's because I haven't read the first in the series however, I stuck with it and found it quite absorbing the more it developed.
Full of action and tension, this is a good read and I look forward to reading more in the series so thanks to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review.
The Devil Inside grabbed my attention right from the beginning, both characters and story, but then it became difficult to follow as it filled in backstory from a previous novel which I haven't read. The story was definitely fast-paced but for me the characters were a bit flat while some action sequences didn't seem plausible to me. It was one edit away from being a polished product, though. Dialogue sometimes didn't have inverted commas, missing commas sometimes made sentences hard to follow, and there were other grammar issues not so serious.
The Devil Inside is for fans of action stories with heroes and villains who might get joy out of it. I would like to see that next level edit, while the transition from the previous story to this one is quite hard to understand.
This story didn't start well for me with many characters being introduced and disappearing. I forgive authors the odd typo but with The Devil Inside there were grammar mistakes which at times made it difficult to read. It was necessary to unscramble run-on sentences and mentally insert commas to get sentences to make sense. The story is mostly third-person limited but it loses focus in some scenes which was distracting.
There's a lot happening in this story and probably too much. To fit it all in, too much was told and not enough was shown. A simpler plot with a lesser number of characters would have worked better for me.
The actions are exciting and engrossing. The plot has new ideas lets in. Lachlan is a great leader for the gang that is finding the mysterious mad killer. The mix is a retired detective, a criminal family, and Lachlan trying to be good after being in bad. I lost a couples when the peoples and times mix in the chapters. The passion of the story is hurt when I had to go back and find what I had just read what happened. The story is so great I loved the book but had to stay hooked into it.
The devil inside by Alex Breck.....This is the second book in the Lachlan Maclean Thriller Series and I have not read the first one, However, it didn't stop me enjoying it. This book was good and had good strong characters throughout.
Big thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
