Big Boys #6

Big Bratva

Rate this book

She’s dropped on my doorstep with a burlap sack on her head.

The diplomat’s daughter. The one they’re all looking for.

Keep her safe. That’s what my brother tells me. Not because he cares for the girl, but because she’s his leverage. His ticket to the big time.

I got myself out of this city’s underworld over a year ago, and with one knock on my door, I’m dragged right back in.

I should tell him no. Should toss her out on the street. But the second I lay eyes on her, something inside me screams that she’s mine to protect.

It’s nonsense, of course. I can’t let her get close. Sweet, innocent girls like her have no business with brutes like me.

I’ll hold her for a few days; I’ll get my brother his big break.

Then I’ll forget she was ever here.

Big Bratva is a short and steamy age gap instalove story, starring a reluctant mobster and the captive who claims his heart.

This had a great premise and I enjoyed what I got from it, but it was really short, even for a novella. Some of Cassie Mint’s I really enjoy and others I think would be so much better with just a few more chapters. A solid read, but left me wanting more.

**2.3/5 stars**

So, this is a situation where the premise is good and interesting but is strongly hurt by the short length of it being a novella. It wasn't the worst in this series; it just fell flat. This one had slightly more pages but it was still not enough pages, in my opinion. It felt like a slide show where the scenes were there, but the deep development wasn't. It was all surface descriptions, if that makes sense. Not much is known about the main characters and it was just hard for me to be interested in them.

Madison was a little bit boring. I usually take a lot of notes on the side and for her, I didn't write anything lmao. Not much is known about her, other than she is the daughter of a diplomat and she was kidnapped by the bratva, to be a leverage. She doesn't have a good relationship with her father and...that's it. She seemed to be a nice and sweet girl, but yeah, not really interesting. It also did feel like she trusted Ilya too quickly, especially in consideration of her situation as a captive, her life being in danger.

“You were my captor, yes, but my protector too. You’re the first person who’s given me freedom, given me choices in my whole life.”-Madison

As for Ilya, he was an ex mobster and he didn't want anything to do with the Bratva his brother was trying to pull him back into. When he was left with Madison as a captive, he was very gentle and protective of her. I just feel like his character would've been so much more interesting if we got to know him more.

“Maybe it’s better if she escapes after all. I can’t be trusted around this girl, not at all.”-Ilya

I didn't see much of the chemistry between Ilya and Madison, due to the lack of development. The interest Ilya takes in her is very superficial and the interest Madison takes in him is very much like Stockholmes Syndrome. It wasn't bad at all, but kind of just lacking.

MMC escaped the bratva and leading a peaceful albeit boring existence. One day, his viper brother who still works for the mafia comes to his house with a female captive and trusting him to keep an eye at her.

FMC did not trust MMC at first (like any sane captive should do) but hey, it's a romance and things turned out well for our MCs.

My only problem with the novella and this kinds of books is: the premise might be intriguing but the author rarely knows how to add something new to the build-up. It's the same formula. MCs are cinnamon-rolls for each other, they are obsessed, the soon take their clothes off (pray that the sex talk is not cringy for your taste), fast forward to the epilogue where maybe they have a kid or five while still having sex many time a day!

A solid 4 star for me.

There were times I liked the main characters and times when they got on my nerves. I have to say it took me a long while to figure out that this story was set in Russia. I don’t know if that’s the fault of the author or I’m just slow on the uptake so I didn’t hold it against. A good read, probably won’t sit on my reread shelf but def enjoyed it.

Major spoilers ahead

Eloping!! Secret romance and abandoned everything that you knew seemed romantic in the book though some might find this type of book unreasonable. As the title went, it was actually an ex-bratva and not a real bratva. A well prepared and very rich ex-bratva.

Madison, daughter of a US diplomat in Russia (I assumed that all of this happened in Russia though the book didn't specifically say that) got snatched on her way home one day by some erratic psychopath Bratva's (errand) boy. The latter then asked his brother, Ilya, to keep Madison while he reported to the Bratva on his work and blackmailed Madison's dad. As OTT instalove plot had predicted, Ilya fell for her fast and hard. Madison was too. So, when one call threatened Madison's well being, they were forced to take extreme measures.

The story, even though predictable, was quite enjoyable and managed to keep me rooted in my seat. I liked how Ilya and Madison were attracted to one another. The banter between Ilya and Madison was kinda cute and fun.
Although it was instant love, it started slow and not full-blown physical attraction. As a matter a fact the coitus was in a much later stage in the story. Although a bit irrational, I really liked how both MCs finally abandon everything in their life to start something new together. I mean it was kinda romantic right?! The idea of choosing love over all the toxic things that happened in your life, especially when only that love could bring you HEA. Ahh loveeee...

Maybe 3.5 stars? I liked this one, but didn’t love it. Despite the story centering around a kidnapping and the Russian mafia, I was actually a little bored and I wanted to see more chemistry and sexual tension between Ilya and Madison.

3.5 stars?

I dunno how to rate this one.

Because this was one of those stories that if full-length, it would've been sooo much better.
But I did like it and Ilya was such a sweetheart.

So I'm rounding it up because I'm a sucker for burly giants with a mean face and a golden heart.

This is the romance between Madison and Ilya. Ilya left the Bratva life and wants nothing to do with it anymore. His brother, however, decides to bring the girl he kidnapped to Ilya's doorstep. Ilya says she can stay with him while his brother figures out negotiations with her very wealthy father. But Ilya is not the kind of captor Madison assumed he would be. He is kind and caring, and ultimately acts like he doesn't want to be her captor at all.

This was a fun instalove novella! I just needed an escape from reality for an hour, and the book definitely gave me that :)

It doesn’t matter how you met if they’re “the one”

I really liked this story. It was entertaining and enjoyable even though it touched on organized crime, kidnapping, and violence. The characters were interesting and likable for the most part. Vasily was a major jerk and deserved the comeuppance that he got. Ilya was protective and possessive. He knew that he wanted Madison but with their age difference and the way that they me, he felt that he didn’t have a chance. Madison was smart and caring. She didn’t want anyone to get hurt. Madison was decisive and had to be persuasive to get what she wanted. I loved their happy ever after. I recommend reading this book.

Big Bratva would have been much better as a full length novel. Too short for the plot and the relationship.

The Rochdale girl

Big Bratva is the sixth book in the Big Boys series. This story took a few turns I did not expect but they definitely kept my attention and was entertaining. Ilya was born and lives in Russia and has extricated himself from the Bratva, starting a new life a year or so ago. His older brother Vasily had joined the Bratva when he was seventeen and brought Ilya with him when he was fifteen. Now Ilya just wants to live his life the way he wants, even though he knows he is being watched by the Bratva. One night Vasily shows up at his door with a young woman with a bag over her head. It seems Vasily grabbed a young woman off the street the night before and he wants Ilya to watch her, as "she is my ticket to the big time". Madison is twenty years old and the only child of a US Diplomat stationed in Russia. She has lived her life to her father's wishes, as a trophy and someone who he can use when needed. She is a good artist and was walking home from her painting class when she was grabbed off the street. She finds herself in an apartment with a very big man and a is not sure what to expect, but it is definitely not the soon to be possessive Ilya. They find themselves drawn to each other in a strange way with Madison feeling safe and protected by Ilya and he needing to ensure she is safe, no matter what the cost. As it turns out Ilya has the resources to escape, both the city, the Bratva and the country, and take Madison with him whether she wants him or not in the end. Along the way Ilya proves to Madison, without even trying to, that he will always keep her safe and protected from anyone.

Madison & Ilva

I first thought Ilva was the women’s name since I have a friend whos daughter is named similarly …
So the first few pages were a bit confusing.

But after that it was okay.
Vassily, Ilvas brother and Bratva member, dropped Madison, a diplomats daughter, off at Ilya apartment. He is himself an ex member of the Bratva and only keeps Madison to keep Vassily off his back.
But really he protects Madison and flees with her when it’s clear that her father won’t negotiate with Vassily or his bosses - so Vassily wants to send one of Madisons finger to his father.

The fist thought was “I hope you didn’t take your phone with you, you doofus, because those can get tracked” but I was sure there would be somewhere a throwaway line that he can’t use his phone because he had to leave if behind.

But no. His brother called. And then he is super surprised that Vassily has tracked the phone and is actually at the harbour on the boat that Ilya and Madison wanted to take to get to America.

It’s so so stupid.
Also … it took me a while to get that they are in Russia. Sure, Bratva is a Russian syndicate and I have plenty of books in which they are in other countries regardless. Now it’s no wonder that Madison was able to speak Russian. Not flawlessly but good enough.

Sigh.
Yeah. It was fine.
I was missing the joy I have when reading these books, but it was better than the last few in this series so there’s that.

This one was good. Definitely better than the last book (Big Bet).
Ilya has achieved getting out of the Bratva. However, his brother isn't going to just let him walk away and neither are the bosses. So even though he's "out" he's still watched and with his brother's latest stunt he may find himself back in the crosshairs of the Bratva. I really liked the idea of Ilya not being a hardened man. He even states that his brother and the bosses always complained about how "soft" he was. I think it makes him a bit more relatable to Madison and her situation with her family and her need to get away and start fresh.

Madison was an eh heroine for me. There wasn't anything that just stood out for me with her. But she wasn't terrible either. I do think that she did bring out more of Ilya's protective nature and that's what he really needed to finally make a stand and fully break away from the Bratva and his family still involved.

This was a different spin on a bratva romance.
I liked that the main male character didn't come across all violent and aggressive, not that he wasn't able able look after himself and the girl and protect her when the time called for it, but you could see a contrast between him and his brother, even after a physical description.
The storyline started straight away, starting with the males pov, which I enjoyed as you got to see more of his life and personality before meeting the girl.
The girls introduction was big, a stranger on thr doorstep in a sense.
This gave off a slight captive vibe but once the characters started to get to know each other then the dynamic between them changed.
From then on the romance really started to shine through and take over the story.
I enjoyed the 'epilogue' which gave you a glimpse into their future together which rounded the story out nicely.

The couple: Ilya and Madison

Romance genre: insta-love; mafia-lite
Series: Big Boys
Length: 78 pages

Plot: Madison, a diplomat's daughter, has been kidnapped by the Bratva. Ilya has left the Bratva, but his brother hasn't, and one night his brother brings Madison to him to watch (after he kidnapped her). But Ilya isn't on board with his brother's ideas, and eventually, he'll have to make a decision about what to do with Madison.

Commentary: This one was sweet. Ilya was the rare book mafia guy who wanted out and actually got out. The violent criminal life wasn't for him, and in the end, he was able to give Madison the white picket fence she was looking for.

Previous book in the series: Big Bet
Next book in the series: Big Beast

This was a so-so read for me. While I am all about the insta-love and extra fluff, this one just didn’t do it for me. I guess I was hoping Ilya would be..harder? Meaner? I don’t know. For someone who had been a part of the Bratva for so long, he just didn’t ring true. Madison was okay. I liked how she took some initiative for herself.

The spice was mild and I might have snorted out loud when Ilya rips her jeans at the seams. *raises eyebrow* Really? I also found it unbelievable that the Russian Bratva would just let Ilya go TWICE. But hey, artistic license.

Overall, just an okay read for me. But maybe this is exactly someone else’s cuppa. Happy reading.

I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving my review. This is an age gap romance between Ilya and Madison. The Bratva is a main part of the story but it is not dark at all. Madison is brought to him for safe keeping so that his brother can use her as leverage. Ilya does not want to get drawn back into the life but one look at Madison changes everything for him. She is confused with her conflicted feelings. Her heart feels the connection but her brain keeps telling her she was taken. He is determined to protect and care for her. Ilya will go to extremes to see them to safety. It was a short, sweet and steamy love story.

Ilya had managed to get out of out of the Bratva criminal world, but his brothers Vasily antics are about to drag him back in when the missing diplomats daughter turns up at his door. Madison knew she was in trouble when she finds her self taken and in the hands of Ilya but they can't deny the zing of attraction, now Ilya must make a choice help his brother or protect the woman whose stirred feelings he never thought possible, but do they stand a chance of freedom? Well written steamy short insta loving, fast paced, desire filled and more.

Big Bratva is the sixth installment of Cassie Mint’s contemporary romantic series, Big Boys. In this one, her readers are introduced to Madison and Ilya. Both Madison and Ilya are pawns of their relatives to be used for personal gain. In Madison’s case, it is her father who manipulates and uses her. For Ilya, it is his brother. Destiny throws these two together and in no time, they develop feelings for each other. Can Ilya keep Madison safe from her father and his brother? Will they be able to escape to a better life? You must read this book to find out. Yet again, Ms. Mint pens another enjoyable contemporary romance. I appreciate her writing style and her skill with literary devices such as dialog, dual POV, dynamic characters, and descriptive language. Well done, Ms. Mint.

Big Bratva is the story of IIya and Madison.

His brother kidnaps the mayors daughter or something to use her as leverage against him so he agrees to being civil with the Bratva or something. Vasily the bad brother drops her off to his younger but buffer brother and tells him to look after her. He does but he gets attached and eventually they run away because his brother wanted him to cut her finger off. They move to some place and then sort out their lives but they quickly get on a ship and come back to the states until Vasily tracked his brothers phone and found him to which he got killed by Ilya. He claims her and they get married and have new identities.

Ilya got our of the bratva last year, he was not for the life, he hated the violence. It all comes crashing back into his life when his brother starts banging on his door. He wants to leave a girl with him, she is his ticket to the big time. She is so gorgeous but what would she want with him. He will do anything to protect her, even from his brother. She is his.

This a steamy story, there is drama and action, as the two make their way out of the situation.
