Garin Nugroho himself has been present at the new wave of Indonesian cinema since he made his first film in 1992. Amid the crisis and confusion in Indonesia's cinema in post 1990s, he emerge alone in breathing life to Indonesia's cinema not only with his survivability amid the crisis facing in government but by means of his ability to teach, and, directly or otherwise, by undertaking education and the creation of space for the growth and birth of a new generation.
What matters is that he has successfully created unusual, extraordinary and ground-breaking films himself. The beauty and uniqueness in his works have made Garin Nugroho's films far from the stereotyped forms of Third-World Filmmakers.

Garin Nugroho (born 6 June 1961), is an award-winning Indonesian film director.
Garin made his directorial debut with 1991's Cinta dalam Sepotong Roti (Love in a Slice of Bread), overcoming bureaucracy caused by his refusal to join the Indonesian filmmakers' union. Cinta dalam Sepotong Roti was selected as Best Film in that year's Indonesian Film Festival.
