By all appearances, Cy Ford is no more than a quiet loner living in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He works as a conservation officer and prefers the company of his sled dogs. What nobody suspects is that his past is a fractured one, and all of it, down to his name, is a lie. During the winter months, Ford moonlights as a drug-running dog sled musher, a lucrative sideline that's allowed him to amass a small fortune. With Christmas around the corner, he has decided to get out of the game, but it won't be that easy. When a turf war breaks out between his Canadian employer and a Detroit-based mobster, he finds himself forced into one last run he and his team may never reach the end of.

Action packed right from the get-go. Would make an excellent movie. Michael Dault does a great job providing plenty of details to help you visualize every scene in your mind. I was pleasantly surprised. There were plenty of moments where I was ready to take a break reading for the day but pressed on because I needed to see where the story was taking me and couldn’t wait. Sometimes one desires to take a break from heavy deep reading and submerge oneself in something a little more fun, less serious, and entertaining. Sometimes I would rather watch a movie like Boondock Saints than something like There Will Be Blood. I adore both very much, but different mindsets call for different adventures, styles, and seriousness. The premise of the book is original and intriguing. The story does an excellent job of keeping you engaged all the way up to the ultímate climax. I plan on reading more by Dault as they are published. What’s not to love about corrupt DNR officers, warring mobsters and drug kingpins, shootouts, gore, meth running, love, and a pissed off Badass hellbent on revenge after being screwed over by literally everyone. Dault doesn’t hold back or beat around the bush. There are no Lulls found here. Every chapter seems to have some drug dealer or thug’s flesh explode in an exciting manner. Kill them all Ford! Let’s go!

If you like lots of action, lots of description and lots of shoot em up....this book is for you.
There was so much description it felt like a screen play script.
The most interesting content was the sled dog aspect. How the lived and how the sleds were driven. The land, snow and ice were also interesting.
Its a good entertaining fast read but I had no connection with any of the characters.

When thinking of Action/Adventure books, what comes to mind is something that is similar to Indiana Jones (because the main character is trying to find a lost treasure and weird things begin to happen in the process.) However, that wasn't the case with Cold Run. It was something totally different from what was expected. Not to mention, the way Michael Dault was about to switch the point of views so fluently was something new. Most authors usually give different characters their own chapters. In Cold Run, the point of views are blended so well that any reader that's reading it won't get confused at what's going on. Another thing about the novel its pace. Normally, slow pacing books tend to make readers less interested in the book. The pacing in Cold Run is slow, but effective to what's going on with the story. This book is also unpredictable and will have readers wanting more of it. This novel will have readers sitting on a couch reading it until the end of the book. Because this book is quite an adventure, it gets a 5 out of 5 rating from me.

Reminiscent of Jack London's gritty tales of humanity at its best and worst, this fast-paced adventure is a wild ride.

Cy Ford is the kind of person who might be quoted as saying, "the more people I get to know, the more I love my dogs." In Ford's case, these aren't just any dogs, but highly trained sled dogs. Ford's sled team is invaluable in helping him with his legal occupation as a conservation officer. They're arguably even more necessary for his (ahem) not-so-legal side job of running drugs across the Canadian border.

Ford's not exactly a good guy. But he's not a bad one, either. He's just a man with a broken past and too much baggage: a man who'll do what he has to. He's a pretty likable guy, as characters go, even if he does prefer the company of his dogs to that of people. He keeps to himself and gets his job done the best that he can.

Unlike the people he'd come across in his travels, dogs weren't full of hate, resentment, or judgment. They never wanted anything from him. They were just loyal. Loyalty was a quality he rarely saw in people. But for dogs, it was literally their code from birth. A straightforward code that Ford understood and could get behind.

Ford and the two other officers at his post, Jett and Avery, have been secretly running drugs during the winter for a Canadian drug boss. But it's time to move on before things get too hot. Unfortunately, their situation heats up before they can take their last run as a Chicago mob boss decides he wants to take over the Upper Peninsula drug business. Including Cy and his team.

This is a wonderfully written story, moving at the pace of Olympic speed skaters on their final lap. The combination of man vs. elements and man vs. man reminded me of so many great stories, including those written by Jack London or C.J. Box. It's raw, emotional, abrupt, intense and stark. It seems as though a man's fate can turn in the blink of an eye in a place where the elements are so often life threatening. Certainly, our three dog mushers find themselves in situations they never expected from one heartbeat to the next.

I loved the characters depicted in this story. Cy is a very complex man seeking nothing more than a simplistic life. He's not a hero, but he reads like one. As the story unfolds, we learn more about Cy's history, but we never get the full story. Not yet, anyway. Because this may be the first book for this character, but definitely not his last.

As intriguing as Cy's character is, I found myself most drawn to a secondary character named Sam. He's one who obviously has much more going on than he shows. For a minor character, he packs a big punch, and I'm hoping to get more of his past later.

This well-written novel is one I would heartily recommend to fans of fast-paced thrillers/suspense novels as well as adventure fans. It flies at the speed of a prize-winning sled team at the Iditarod and allows the reader to climb onboard that sled with them to feel the cold ice in your face and the terror in your veins.

4.5 rounded down because there were too many typos around 80% of the book. Not sure on what pages because I read it on Kindle.

At the very beginning, I thought about dropping the book as it started slow. But I'm glad I stuck with it because before long it became very interesting with plenty of suspense and thrills. The story is based in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with Canada across the lake.

Main character is involved with sled dogs and his relationship with the dogs is tender and interesting. But he is also involved with meth smuggling. The secondary character of the sheriff who is chasing him is also interesting. Who will you want to prevail?

There are many bad guys including an interesting black crime family from Detroit. I can't say much about who killed who and how without spoilers.

Will the protagonist survive and maybe live happily ever after? Will the sheriff catch him or be at peace with his failure to catch him? You'll have to read the book to find out.

Cy Ford has a past. Currently, he is a DNR officer in the UP of Michigan. He is also a drug runner for a powerful Canadian drug dealer. Ford wants out, but gets caught up in a turf war between two drug lords. Cold run is a neat story about a man and his dogs. There is sexual tension between Ford and Avery, a female officer assigned to his post. The plot twists and turns as the reader finds himself alternately pulling for Ford, or the local law. I enjoyed the read and I look forward to reading more by Author Michael Dault.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I was kind of disappointed in a couple of things, but it had to do with mechanics rather than the story itself. The only one I will mention is that I am not a big fan of flashbacks.

Having said that, this is exactly the kind of adventure story that I like the most. Action from beginning to end. Also I have not read a good sled dog story since I read Jack London in school. I think anyone that chooses to read this book will be totally satisfied.

Three drug dealers under the guise of DNR officers, transport drugs into Canada by dogsled. A lucrative business under the perfect disguise. However, a gang war is going on around their trade, and one that forces them into a fight for survival.

A strong entry in the action genre, “Cold Run” builds up to a sequence of events that will have readers gripped. Violent and frenetic, once the situation proves to be dire for Ford and his crew Dault does not skip on gory details. In addition, the build-up of events progresses naturally in a way that will have readers excited to see how the strong personas clash. There are many surprises to be found, and the violent gang war that erupts feels grounded in relaying how chaotic such scenarios would play out. From a diner shootout to a chase across the snowy plains at night, “Cold Run” action heavy focus is wonderfully enthralling from the first shot fired.

However, the book does falter in the opening chapters, where Dault relies on cliched language and mention of brand names to explain personal traits. Early in the first chapter, Dault goes as far to call his protagonist “one bad hombre”, a statement which is both contrived and doesn’t actually lead to the reader believing Ford is just that. Admittedly, this makes the first several chapters a bit of a slog as there are times where things feel forced and awkward. As the action picks up this becomes a distant memory, as Dault excels in capturing action sequences and getting the adrenaline going - the book morphs from a chore into a page-turner that welcomes to be consumed in one sitting.

This also extends to the character of Ford, who in the opening resonates a natural charisma but fails to stand out under the simple descriptive work of Dault - making the ‘man of mystery’ an enigma with little intrigue. However, as Ford interacts with more people, his past revealed, and his war against two gangs erupts, the character becomes an ideal male fantasy. Perfect for those who like escapism in the form of a hardened man of action.

A bit rough at the start, “Cold Run” really picks up and results in an exciting read that action fans are sure to find thrilling. In addition, the book leaves two notable loose ends that will give reason to want to dig into the next entry.

Well-written, engaging and fast-paced plot, with an interesting/unexpected ending. The story follows Cy Ford who is heading north to take a new job as a wildlife ranger. The story flips "time zones" occassionally to allow a few back stories to develop. Cy Ford and his colleagues are drug runners, using sled dogs. When they choose to end their drug-running, their boss disagrees. They become embroiled in a turf war between their boss and a rival. When the bullets start to fly, the local law enforcement become involved. The supporting characters are well developed. The setting was intriguing and allowed the writer to involve sled dogs which added an interesting layer that could've been developed more.

This book was so good. I didn't want it to end! This is the story of 3 DNR officers who use their dog sled teams to run drugs through the UP of Michigan over to Canada. When a rival drug cartel moves in to take over the territory a pile of bodies gets left in the wake. With law enforcement moving in also it becomes a story of who can outsmart who. This book has it all....and the dogs are an added bonus!

When the author came out with 'The Sons of Summer' I, being a baseball fan, was expecting him to follow it up with another baseball or sports-related novel. Yet, he comes at us with an modern winter western. If you ever seen 'Drive' with Ryan Gosling, this is the winter version of that, and I'll go a step further and say this is even better. Cy Ford, or this nameless man who steals identities, keeps us wanting to know the mystery that is his past. I'm hoping the author keeps peeling back the layers of this dude. I really want to know more. And I'm a dog fanatic, so he had me by the premise. This book could work as a one off, if the author chose to just stick with this one. But now that he's announced it's a series, I'm all in.

Cold Run is a fast-paced, exciting thriller that literally gallops across the pages and draws the reader in completely. Author Michael Dault has crafted a plot and backstory to Cy Ford that just keeps twisting and turning, keeping the reader constantly guessing and trying to anticipate the next move. The three principal characters, Cy, Avery, and Jett, are well-drawn and easily identifiable and despite them nominally being “bad”, it is very easy for readers to empathize with them and their plight, which is a real credit to the author’s skills. Through the narrative, the author poses the question that all readers will no doubt contemplate – how would I have reacted to a similar lucrative offer to that made to Cy, Jett, and Avery? With both Jett and Avery being solid, local, and dependable DNR employees, with clear backgrounds, why did they suddenly decide to become criminals? I particularly appreciated that the author explored this issue and answered the question well. Cy Ford himself is an intriguing enigma and one that begs to be further explored in future novels in this series. I certainly look forward to exploring more of this man’s mysterious background in the next iteration. I can’t also help but wonder how much of a role the now retired Sheriff will play in the upcoming next book. I really enjoyed the constant tension the author generated in this story which made it a real delight to read and one I can highly recommend.

This one checks all of my favorite crime-fiction boxes: bleak and atmospheric setting, laconic and contemplative antihero, major and minor characters all drawn in shades of gray, stoical attitudes toward death, etc.

The story is something of a cross between detective noir and noir thriller in that the main character straddles the categories: Cyrus Ford is both a law enforcer and an outlaw.

Most of the major characters appear first as types, then become a bit more complicated as the story progresses. In the second half, the narrative skips back in time to reveal the characters’ back stories, and the specific causal chains that led to the moment of crisis. For example, Avery enters the story as something of a male fantasy woman (effortlessly gorgeous, strong but nurturing, etc.) and later springs a couple of surprises. Even some of the dog characters get a back story.

The main plot involves meth-dealer turf wars, the aspirations of the central characters, and a “final job.”

The book is listed as first in a series (“Book #1”), and I will be curious to see where the story goes next. The penultimate chapter provides a great setup for a book #2. It also has an exquisitely crafted final paragraph that would have made a great conclusion for the book. But the actual final chapter is itself tremendously satisfying.

Where did this come from? I was not expecting Michael Dault to follow up with this sort of novel, let a lone a series! I'm blown away by this book. From the moment our protagonist, Cy Ford/Man with No Name, comes on the page for the first time until the he's on the last page, the pace is great. I read a lot of action-adventure books, and Dault has a intoxicating writing style that starts with the set up and as you read you feel the tension rising until the big crescendo arc. I'm looking forward to the second book in this series.

Michael Dault grabs your attention from the first paragraph and doesn’t let up on his grip. You’re in it for the entire thrilling ride. It’s hard to imagine that Cold Run, a story set in the backwoods of Northern Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, could have that much allure but the combination of an abundance of pristine snow, sled dogs with more intelligence than some humans, and the thrill of clandestine drug-running creates an intoxicating thrill ride of suspense. A huge part of that allure is thanks to Dault’s enigmatic protagonist, who has too many skeletons in his closet to count. The fact that he’s chosen to break the law yet seems to have admirable scruples makes for one very interesting main character. He’s a paradox at best, thinking nothing of taking another man’s life in the name of survival yet has a special affinity for animals, especially his sled dogs, that is sure to warm the most indifferent of hearts. Cold Run has plenty of violence and bloodshed and certainly isn’t for those with weak stomachs. However, all this is tempered by moments of tenderness and a visceral need for survival that make the acts of violence forgivable – and even necessary at times. A great read from start to finish!

There’s a fascinating psychological perspective in exploring people who willingly take dog sleds out over vast plains of ice in the middle of the night. A mindset that knows fear but doesn’t feel it from the inherent danger of their task, and a mindset that author Michael Dault has taken the time to understand and exquisitely depict in his lead character, Cy. The character leaps off the page and is a very realistic understanding of how people like Cy operate. To take someone who is accustomed to a very real daily danger and create a high-stakes situation enough to scare and challenge them is no small undertaking, but Cold Run manages to maintain a pace of adrenaline that not many other thrillers can manage for long. A must-read for fans of tense and exciting thrills, I recommend this book to all.

Cold Run by Michael Dault is a fast-paced and action-packed novel that I couldn’t stop reading. If you love stories about cartels, intrigue, and plenty of action, then this book is for you. Cold Run is a riveting tale of survival, betrayal, wit, and loyalty that got my adrenaline pumping. Michael is a talented storyteller who brought the characters to life with his descriptive narration. I loved the plot and unique storyline that never ran out of shockers. Ford was my most favorite character for his focus, resourcefulness, and survival instincts. Drifter Sam also endeared himself to me with his unassuming yet formidable personality. I fell in love with the sled dogs, especially North. His ferocity and loyalty until the end made me teary. Anson reminded me to prioritize family because they’ll always be there for me, even when all is lost.

Author Michael Dault tells a gripping tale of a man trying to find a new life but struggling to overcome the baggage of his past. With crooked cops, warring drug lords, and world-weary men trying to carve out something of their own, Cold Run is a page-turner of a novel that reminds you of the Coen Brothers' hit 90s movie Fargo. Dault wastes little time in getting things moving as the plot maintains a blistering pace with twists and turns that keep you hooked from start to finish. The characters are well-realized with distinct motives that give agency to their actions and make them thoroughly riveting to read. The action scenes are described vividly in a realistic manner that clearly underlines the stakes. Highly recommended.

Ever since his debut book "The Sons of Summer" I've been anticipating Dault's next book. When "Cold Run" was released I was surprised he went off the baseball genre but after reading this book I was pleasantly surprised. This sort of reminds me of like a modern western, as there are elements here that play the same. Cy Ford is the anti-hero that's hard to dislike, while his team of dogs are unforgettable in this high action-adventure. I got my book on the 10th and flew through it in 3 days, so that tells you how much of a page turner it is. On top of that, this is the first book in a series, so now I'm bummed I have to wait for the next ones to come out.

An exemplar thriller that puts the readers avid throughout their read. The author made an excellent work by perfectly combining all the elements of adventure, suspense, etc.

Cold run plots a completely different mode of developing the storyline revolving around three DNR officers and a dog. A crime-fiction puts us in avid on its every page. All these make it a favorite read for all age groups. Despite it being ambiguous at certain points and an indefinite character sketch at its beginning, this rare read marks spark in the mind of its readers. In every part, the author has put due attention to persisting the curiosity of the instinctive readers. I am also curiously waiting to enjoy reading its further series.

Cy Ford is no ordinary man. He appears to be a lonely and kind guy working as a conservation officer in Michigan, but nothing is more far off from the truth. Ford is in fact a drug-running dog sled musher that decided that life was enough. He wants an out and because of that decision, he is in great danger.

This story was a surprise for me! As I started reading, I thought that the characters were a bit plane, but as I kept on reading, they started to develop and the perspective of the narrative changed and kept growing to create a great anti-hero/hero mash-up. There is chaos but also moments of calm where I was able to like Ford’s character. Michael Dault was able to create a thriller that flips the reader's opinion and that to me is a win. Highly recommended!

An exciting novel
Just by looking at the cover I could figure out that I´d enjoy this novel called “Cold run”. It is the first book in the series penned by Michael Dault. I started reading and I wouldn't put it down.
The story revolves around Cy Ford who owns a company of sled dogs and works as a conservation officer, as well. People who surround him don´t know about Cy´s past and this will bring about some problems for him.
What an enticing plot! There are so many twists that surprised me while I was reading. It's an exciting, emotional novel full of surprises. I liked the way the characters and the setting are portrayed along the pages. I enjoyed this read a lot and without a doubt I recommend it.

Cold Run is the beginning of a series that promises to be very good and unsettling. It is a suspenseful novel that tells the story of a strange protagonist. Quiet and mysterious, the main character in this story is wonderfully represented and described. He is surrounded by lies and secrets that the reader will discover along the pages.
I liked this novel from the very beginning. I think it is excellently written. Even the great cover matches perfectly with the story and creates a sense of expectation and anxiety satisfied lately as we deepen in the narrative. I enjoyed it a lot and I can’t wait to read the next installment in the series.
