The Great Charade

Rate this book
Abby desperately needed a fake girlfriend for the holidays, but who would spend ten days with her in Red River, New Mexico pretending to be her partner? After striking out with all her friends, she resorts to asking a stranger.

Nic agreed to the proposition in the hopes of having her very first—and probably only—fairytale Christmas in a mountain lodge with snow and all the trimmings.

Neither anticipated becoming friends and they certainly didn’t count on the pretend kisses becoming real. But fairytales end, don’t they? After saying their goodbyes, they doubt they’ll see each other again.

Gerri began writing lesbian romance as a way to amuse herself while snowed in one winter in the mountains of Colorado, and hasn’t looked back. Her first published work came in 2000 with One Summer Night. Many more romances have followed, with the occasional murder mystery in the mix.
Gerri’s love of nature and of being outdoors usually makes its way into her stories as her characters often find themselves in beautiful natural settings. When she isn’t writing, Gerri and her longtime partner, Diane, can be found at their home in East Texas, where their vegetable garden, orchard, and five acres of woods keep them busy. They share their lives with an ever-changing cast of furry friends.
Her favorite pastimes include camping, hiking, birdwatching (though she insists she doesn’t wear funny hats yet!), photography, and cooking. She collects things nature offers, like an unusual pinecone, colorful rocks, or an abandoned bird feather. Dawn is her favorite time of day, the moment right before sunrise...
"I love the morning... the beginning of a brand new day. Because even things that we know are unattainable flutter within our grasp. In the early morning—at that cusp of a new day—everything is possible."

4.25 Stars. This was just the book I needed. I’ve been having some bad lucky lately when it comes to romances so I was very excited that a new Gerri Hill book was coming out. If anyone can change my luck around it’s her, and sure enough she did just that. Not only was this a good romance, but I’ve been looking for some fun holiday books and this sure hit the mark with its Christmas theme. This is actually one of the more substantial Christmas themed books I’ve read in a while so if you are looking for holiday books to read this December, this is a perfect fit.

My all-time favorite romance trope is a fauxmance. I love fake romances and I was so excited to realize this was a fauxmance/holiday book. Having a fake girlfriend to take home to your parents’ house over Christmas is the perfect setting for this kind of trope. Hill was so skillful in building this relationship of two strangers turning into lovers and potentially more. The chemistry was really nice between these two. It definitely started more lust than romance, but their physical connection is what changed their personal connection. It was really well done and very believable. There are some good steamy scenes too.

I was also happy that there was the perfect amount of conflict and angst for the story. The actual relationship angst wasn’t too heavy, and instead felt like the perfect weight for what was believable for who the characters were and their backgrounds. There was also outside conflict that the characters had to deal with that was pretty interesting. One of the main characters named Abby, has an ex-girlfriend who is now dating Abby’s brother. You can imagine the tension there, which made for some good page turns, and is the whole reason why Abby needed a fake girlfriend for Christmas.

While I really enjoyed most of the book, I had one or two small issues. In the beginning, sex is sort of bartered as a way for Nic to agree to fake date Abby, and I didn’t like that. Abby is not comfortable with the idea so I was worried (like Corrie mentioned in her review) that it would make Nic seem predatory. Luckily, everything changes as the book goes on and this is discussed and made right so instead of feeling weird about Nic, you get to learn who she truly is. The last small complaint is that Nic and Abby talk about if her ex is gay or not since she is now with Abby’s brother. It is brought up another time and is mentioned that she might be bi, but I thought both of these conversations should have been left out since they seemed very dated.

TLDR: Not only was this the book I needed, but it was the book I wanted. I love fauxmances and to place them in a holiday setting like Christmas and you have the potential for a really enjoyable romance. There was one small part (about how casual sex is bartered) that worried me but that soon is worked out and I didn’t have any other major complaints. I would absolutely recommend this to romance readers that love fauxmance or readers who are looking for really good holiday romances.

An ARC was given to me for a review.

This book messed me up and not in the way I usually enjoy. I love Gerri Hill’s romance novels. She often manages to make me tear up and get my emotions all over the place. I also know that she sometimes writes things that make me cringe. Consent is assumed but not always clear with some characters whom I have to call predatory. And the first chapters of this book had me really worried and uncomfortable in that regard.

It starts in the most absurd way, as do many fake romances. I mean, how does faking a relationship ever sound like a good idea? Fake romance is a fun trope, one I like a lot, but if books were real life, I don’t think it would ever end well.

At the beginning of The Great Charade, Abby is dreading going to her parents’ home for Christmas because her ex is now engaged to her brother, which didn’t stop her from seducing Abby last Christmas. Long story short, Abby wants to take a fake girlfriend with her to help her resist Holly this time. Nic is a landscape artist Abby sometimes get glimpses of at lunchtime. A stranger, since all of Abby’s friends think her idea is insane. Nic has her own issues with Christmas, going back to her horrible childhood. When Abby asks her to be her fake girlfriend for ten days, Nic agrees in exchange for sex.

Ugh. If I was in the habit of DNFing books, I’d have stopped there. Or maybe I’d have stopped the second time someone mentioned Holly being a lesbian dating a man. Bisexuality is a thing, you know?

But I almost never DNF and I’ve loved so many Hill books that she deserves the benefit of the doubt. The characters’ faults aren’t necessarily the author’s and all that. So I went on. And as the story developed, I liked Abby and Nic more and more. Nic really isn’t as callous as she let Abby (and me) think. Quite the opposite, in fact. She’s guarded, for good reasons, but she’s also caring and kind. Witnessing her get her first fairytale Christmas was heartwarming. The chemistry between the two MCs was real, and when the Christmas bubble got to an end, I was sad along with them. I was absolutely rooting for them.

Fifteen or twenty years ago, when finding sapphic stories was still somewhat of a challenge, I would have recommended this one without a second thought. Today, I’m not so sure. If you’ve never read a Gerri Hill book, don’t start here. Read At Seventeen. Read No Strings. Read The Cottage (prepare to weep), read The Secret Pond, read Chasing a Brighter Blue or The Stars at Night. Hill has written really good books, romance, mysteries, thrillers. She’s excellent at depicting scenery and taking the reader to the places she loves. When her characters are good, they’re excellent. If this book doesn’t work for you, another one will.

I received a copy from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Exes and siblings.

Gerri Hill has written a ton of books but I haven't read that many of them. But this one is a Christmas romance that sounded good, so I thought I'll give it a try.

I really enjoyed the dynamics between the main characters, Abby and Nic. This is a fauxmance where the characters are more or less comfortable with each other, the chemistry is good and the sex is even better. There is also a good mix of lighthearted humour with a bit of depth too. When Abby approaches Nic to be her fake girlfriend for the holidays, Nic is practically a stranger but Nic too has her own story to tell and I'm glad she gets to open up to Abby gradually.

The situation between Abby, her brother, Aaron and his fiancée, Holly is insane. Abby and Aaron don't have a relationship or any loyalty towards each other and Holly and Abby used to be an item. It's actually a weirder situation than that and if you read it, you'll know what I mean. But I feel it's all in humour so I don't think much of it even though there are times when I can feel my tolerance for absurdity being tested. Like how Abby's family dismisses Abby's feelings towards Holly and Aaron as if she's making a big deal out of nothing and how Abby chooses to stay mum about certain things.

Edited 12.1.22 changing my rating due to this being biphobic.

“The Great Charade” is a fauxmance romance set in the mountains of Red River, NM during Christmas.

Abby Carpenter is looking for a fake-girlfriend. Her ex, Holly, who is now engaged to her brother, will be at their family Christmas and has made it known she’s up for an affair. Abby isn’t strong enough to deny Holly so she decides to ask a stranger to go with her on the 10-day trip. She meets Nic, a landscape artist, in the common grounds at her office. Nic is the exact opposite of Holly and agrees to go with Abby to keep Holly away.

Honestly, I read this without reading the blurb and that was a mistake. Had I known this was about cheating with your sibling’s significant other I wouldn’t have read this. I find the situation very cringey and I don’t like to read about it. Something else that bothered me was Nic’s counteroffer in exchange of going with Abby. She doesn’t come across very well and it made me not like her in the beginning.

Getting that out of the way, I’m glad I persevered as I ended up really liking this. Nic becomes someone I really liked once you get to know her and her background. I liked the chemistry and relationship that developed between Abby and Nic and thought they were a good fit. They get to know one another and support each other when the times call for it. Their romance ended up being very sweet and caring and I was happy I stuck with it.

I recommend this if you’re wanting a mostly sweet, heartwarming festive romance. There is some light angst and things get a little darker than I expected at one point but this mostly had me smiling while I read. And I really liked the cover after I saw how it was incorporated into the story.

My first Christmas themed book of the year and it was an excellent decision. I can easily get overloaded with Holiday “joy”, so I generally only read a few of these books a year, but this was a no-brainer for me, a fauxmance written by Gerri Hill, a favorite topic and a favorite writer. And yes, the book gives a winter white wonderland, with a (fake) romance and a bit of crazy family drama, so it delivers exactly what you might expect (and hope for) from a Christmas themed book.

Abby is dreading Christmas with her family, 2 years previous her ex-cheated on her with her brother (during the family Christmas holiday). If that’s not bad enough, the year after, the same ex slept with Abby during the Christmas holiday, while still in a relationship with Abby’s brother. Now, Abby is determined not to let that happen again, she needs protection and what better protection than a fake girlfriend?
Ok, this is pretty crazy, and you have to suspend belief in order to get to the point of the fauxmance in this book and you should not question the motivations behind the actions of the characters in this book. But it’s so crazy that I found it quite funny and I just went along with it. I liked the characters and their chemistry, changing from lust to romance, and their backstories add depth and some angst to the story.

So, Abby has to find a last-minute fake girlfriend who she finds in Nic. Nic has bad experiences with Christmas, doesn’t like the holiday, and never really celebrated Christmas. But she sees this as a fun project, and she has no other plans, so why not? It turns out that Nic is the perfect person to ramp up the winter wonderland feeling, because, throw in some snow and a nice fireplace and it’s all winter fun and amazement and even Nic gets to enjoy the holiday.

There was only one thing in this book that I wished Hill would have approached differently and that’s a weird sex angle. At some point sex is requested/demanded as payment (while knowing the other person wasn’t into that). In the end it didn’t play out like that and all sex was consensual, but it just didn’t sit right with me. Interestingly, while I disliked this person for obvious reasons at the start of the book, I actually really liked her after getting to know her better and I could not see her make such a demand, it seemed so out of character. I was glad this angle was more or less dropped later on, but I wish it was not there at all.

In summary, I wouldn’t call this book all light and fluffy, there is some drama and emotional moments, but at the same time it’s the right kind of crazy and an excellent book to get that holiday feeling.

I am a big Gerri Hill fan. I really like her romances, and her holiday love stories are especially good. The Great Charade, her newest Christmas themed novel is just more proof of this.

Ms. Hill uses one of the best tropes for a love story in this book, the fake romance. There are so many things you can do with this trope, and the author takes full advantage of that.

In this story Abby Carpenter is in desperate need of a fake girlfriend. She will soon have to spend 10 days (Christmas through New Year’s) with her family in the resort town of Red River, New Mexico. This wouldn’t be so bad if the family didn’t include her brother and his fiancée…the woman who used to be Abby’s girlfriend before she cheated on Abby. The same person who lured Abby into a one night stand. Abby finally finds Nic Bennett who is willing to go with her to Red River and pretend to be her girlfriend, but Nic has a counter offer that Abby is not sure she’s willing to accept.

This is a wonderfully crafted story with a lot of conflict coming from several different directions. There is also an underlying layer of angst, from Abby’s rather dysfunctional family dynamics to Nic’s past. Ms. Hill handled the romance between Nic and Abby perfectly. They start out as strangers and the author slowly lets them become friends. The chemistry they have together takes them further as the story continues through the holiday season and beyond. The setting is almost magical, and definitely worthy of a holiday story. I even caught a few Easter eggs from some of Ms. Hill’s past books.

The Great Charade really is a heartwarming, romantic holiday book that I’m really glad I was able to read this season. If you’re looking for a great novel to read this holiday, this may be the one you are looking for.

I really enjoyed this! And let's just get it out of the way at the outset - yes, I had the same feeling as others did about the "payment" Nic required to participate in the ruse. But ultimately I was happy with how all of that was resolved. Really - Nic is such a sweetheart that it almost seemed out of character once we got to know her. I have to believe Gerri more saw that more as a bit of bravado on Nic's part - that Abby wouldn't be able to resist her. But there was a moment in an early scene that really skirted a line and I was kind of surprised about that choice.
On to the rest of the book. I'm especially appreciative that this was something entirely new for Gerri Hill. I think I've read all of her books (well - except for one or two) and this is a story unlike any she's never told with characters we've never seen.
Both MCs were interesting. Imperfect, but great. I LOVED Abby, yet she had this distrust of herself when it came to her ex Holly. And what a loathsome character Holly was! We could have a whole discussion of Holly and Abby's brother Aaron's relationship, but that's a topic for another day.
Nic was such a relatable character in many ways because she didn't have positive relationship role models (understatement) so didn't think she would ever have a healthy, loving relationship herself. So watching these two characters' "fake" relationship evolve was quite lovely. And oh so sexy too. In the end I absolutely loved them both. I was especially impressed with how Abby handled things toward the end of the book.
There were also some really strong secondary characters in Abby's mother, Abby's lunch friend Sharon and Nic's best friends.
Abby Craden is so perfectly suited to narrate Gerri's books. She "goes there" with the internal angst, pain, sadness - and love. You feel every moment.
In the end, I liked this so much that I can see listening to it every holiday season. While it's not all good feels all the time, it hits all the right spots with the relationship building, heartwarming family moments and outcome. I'd like to see more of these characters down the road, in fact!

For me, this was a perfect Christmas book. Not only does it nail the Christmas theme, the premise is so engaging from the very first page - Abby needs a fake girlfriend to take home for the holidays because her ex is now dating her brother. This crazy scenario hooked me in from the get go and I read this book in 24 hours - a feat for me at the moment. It was a real page turner.

Although you'd think a premise like this would cause a lot of angst, this book focuses moreso on the relationship development between Nic and Abby. They are strangers at first, and over the course of a week or so they get to know each other and this is what then kept me turning the pages. The way their relationship develops was a joy to read and felt so organic.

The backstory of Nic was gut-wrenching, but I loved the way Abby engages with her once she knows. It was a really beautiful part of their story and I loved that it wasn't blown out of proportion or used in a way that made it feel overly constructed.

I absolutely adored this Christmas novel and it’s definitely one of my favourites from Gerri Hill.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bella Books for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

I liked it.
It's sweet and very cute …
But, sadly it’s too much on the short side to my own taste to be rated as really liked it and even less as amazing. => 3,5 ⭐️
I mean by that that the story, especially in the last 1/3 of the book is too rushed IMO (it was pretty detailed until Christmas day and then … Pow! In no time, the rest of the stay in Red River was gone).

And it also lacked of Holly bitchiness. Having a lil bit more of drama because of this greedy so-called lesbian during the Holiday break would have allowed us to witness the MCs getting closer while beginning facing their personal issues => The more Holly would have tried to put Nic down, unconsciously Abby could have been pushed to support her (fake at the time) GF & this way reinforcing their bound a tad more each time and make the end (when they are back in Dallas) more credible & poignant, especially with a coupke of additional scenes showing Nic struggling with her conflicted feelings.

An epilogue to show us how their love story evolved (maybe happening 2 Christmas later) would have been appreciated to make the romance look more like a HEA instead of the HFN it is right now ...

This was an entertaining Christmas listen by Gerri Hill. Chasing a Brighter Blue is still my favourite holidays’ audiobook but this one was enjoyable too.

Abby Carpenter is dreading her family holiday gathering as she has to meet her ex-girlfriend who is now dating her brother. Same ex-girlfriend who lured her into bed last year. So she decides to ask a stranger to go with her as her fake girlfriend. What can go wrong?

This is another story with the very popular fake romance trope but in this case, the main characters are total strangers. I was surprised by the original offer (to ask a complete stranger to join a 10-day family gathering) and the counteroffer this stranger suggests. I admit that the first few chapters in which this counteroffer was discussed made me a bit uncomfortable but the story quickly turns to a more typical fake romance.

In Gerri Hill’s books, the outdoors is normally a character in its own right but this time it isn’t as much. The big theme is the holidays’ celebrations and Nic’s tragic family past which messed up her enjoyment of the festivities. Nic is a bit of a Christmas grinch forced by her past history and Abby and her family are her way to make peace with it. The best part of the book is how Nic sees Christmas with new eyes full of wonder and happiness, being welcomed to Abby’s family and falling in love in the process.

The audiobook was narrated by Abby Craden who, as usual, did a great job. Her performance of Abby’s annoying and snooty ex is priceless. Ms. Craden evokes the family warmth and Christmas spirit perfectly. Once again, her performance elevated an already good story. 4.5 stars.

Really not sure how to rate this one. Gerry Hill is really hit and miss with me and this one is definitely in the miss category.

The premise definitely had me intrigued: Abby’s desperate to find a date to join her to spend Christmas with her and her family so that she doesn’t sleep with her bother’s fiancée—again—the fiancée, who was Abby’s girlfriend before she was her bother’s girlfriend (there’s a whole other drama there). So she asks a complete stranger who’s actually willing to go along with the idea, as long as Abby has sex with her.

Okay, so I didn’t know about the sex request and probably wouldn’t have passed on this book had I known because that doesn’t work for me.

But now that I typed out that whole premise, I should have steered clear. What adult doesn’t have self control enough to not sleep with their brother’s partner? Is that a thing? Lust thoughts I can deal with? But sex? Under her parents’ roof? I don’t buy it.

But what really didn’t work for me was the writing. Gerri Hill’s dialogue didn’t work here—it doesn’t feel like like 30 somethings actually speaking. And, much like with The Neighbor, which really worked for me, there are all these weird ideas about class and status and type. Type especially is something Hill seems stupidly fixated on. No one talks the way Holly does about Nic—at least not in front of the person.

I also didn’t like that Abby’s mom refuses to call Nic “Nic” because it’s a nickname? I’m sorry, we all get to go by whatever name we want to go by and everyone should use that name. That really bothered me.

Oh, and, Gerri Hill, bisexuals exist!

This was one of the more mediocre Gerri Hill books in my opinion. I wasn't really fond of Nic in the beginning (pressuring anyone for sex is not OK) and Aaron made me want to kill him (he's a spineless douche). But in the second half it kinda redeemed itself.
Still, if you haven't read anything by Gerri Hill I'd recommend starting elsewhere

3.2 stars. An OK holiday read with a decent amount of chemistry and fluffiness mixed with some high stakes drama that mostly happened in the past and affects the action of characters in the present day. No flashbacks, however, which is always appreciated as I don't enjoy time related shenanigans like flashbacks.

I wasn't sure why some characters acted the way they acted. Their motivations too often seemed forced to match the story beats. It sorta works? But I wasn't convinced in the end.

Some readers have picked up on the consent issue, which didn't bother me too much since it's fiction which has more room to explore taboo subjects that shouldn't be repeated IRL. What bothered me was the way the author presents it as a demand or even light blackmail instead of seduction. It felt out of place. Especially for a holiday read.

On the topic of a holiday read, it seems like all the positive Christmas related content comes from pure materialism. The house, the decorations, the tree. The gifts, etc.

While the people are somewhat functional on a surface level, most of them have some kind of self-inflicted dysfunction that actively detracted from my reading experience. You need some for the drama, sure, but it has SO drama, sibling drama, parent drama, infidelity in multiple directions and even a tragedy in the mix. It's just a bit too much for a holiday read.

I do like Gerri Hill a lot, especially her non-crime related books, but this wasn't one of her best.

ARC received via Bella Books in exchange for an honest review.

This was my third Christmas book for the month, and probably my favourite. Gerri Hill is a pretty safe bet and this was an enjoyable romance, although not without flaws.

So, this features MC Abby, who is facing Xmas with her ex, Holly, who is now dating her brother, they met two years ago when Abby took Holly home for Xmas but Holly then slept with Abby’s brother, Aaron. Then next year when they all spent Xmas together Holly pursued Abby again and they slept together, Abby is worried this will happen again and so decides she needs a fake girlfriend to keep Holly at bay.

Enter MC Nic, who works at her uncle’s landscaping business. Abby spots Nic when she’s part of the crew who do the gardening at Abby’s work and eventually works up the nerve to ask her to help with her fake girlfriend plan. Nic doesn’t really like Xmas, with good reason, but agrees, though only if Abby also agrees that sex will be part of her ‘compensation’. Abby’s not comfortable with this, but is desperate enough to agree.

By virtue of this setup, the two spend a lot of time together, and unlike some fauxmances, actually get to know each other and discuss life stories, favourite things, and in Nic’s case, past tragedies. They are also both super sweet, and surprisingly compatible.

Most of the story takes place during Xmas, so Abby’s parents and Aaron and Holly feature a lot. Abby’s parents are having their own issues, and Holly is a mean bitch who appears to make Aaron miserable, and also seems to realise she picked the wrong sibling.

I really enjoyed Nic and Abby’s relationship, loved the way they talked to and supported each other. I also loved Nic’s wide eyed wonder as she experienced her first real Xmas, especially in light of what is revealed about why the holiday is difficult for her. Most of the supporting characters are enjoyable, particularly Abby’s mother and Nic’s BFFs, who are lovely and supportive.

There are a few flaws here though, first, I was uncomfortable with the ‘compensation’ aspect, I really wish Hill hadn’t included it. Even though everything they did was consensual, the first time had an element of coercion or expectation that I didn’t enjoy. I also couldn’t fathom why Abby’s parents, especially her mother, didn’t seem to realise til partway through this Xmas that Holly was a bitch and blamed Abby for any awkwardness. It was just weird. Holly as a character was also deeply unlikable, so much so that I couldn’t see what either sibling had seen in her, or why an obviously miserable Aaron persisted with his relationship. On the positive side, this doesn’t feature a contrived breakup, and there’s no manufactured drama.

Overall, this is a lovely romance between the MCs, who have great chemistry and a good basis for the HEA to be believable. The flaws are the reason I’ve knocked off a star. 4 stars.

I enjoyed this book as I do most Gerri Hill books. It was a fun fake relationship/holiday read. I did find some of the family dynamics to be a bit strange but it is what it is.

As usually, Abby Craden does a great job with the narration.

I loathe cheating and was wary of Abby because of the last Christmas incident, but after thinking of this as a romantic comedy, and not taking the caricature characters of Holly and Aaron too seriously, it made for a very entertaining read.

Lovely romance. I liked the writing, the MC’s and also how their love story developed. I especially liked the way they respected each other’s sensitivities. I agree with some of the other reviewers about the counteroffer of sex Nic made Abby, which worried me. It was clear that Abby didn’t want that. In the end though, Nic and Abby discussed having sex and the agreement they had and Nic wasn’t the predator she seemed when she made sex a provision of the agreement to have a fake relationship.
I also want to mention that I liked the way Abby and her mother Sandra talked to each other as adults about the problems Sandra experienced in her relationship with and Abby’s father.

Yeahhh this one is a DNF at barely 9% for me. Right away with what felt like hints at biphobia before we even meet this Holly (who does sound kinda like an asshole, but still, not cool) and I can tell immediately that I’m going to hate Nic. “We’ll yeah, we’ll have sex bc what else would I be getting out of this?” Cool. Fuck you, no thanks.

It’s possible that this is a case of this author is not for me. I haven’t read a lot by her, but I enjoyed Keepers of the Cave snd Weeping Walls, BUT mostly for the mysteries/paranormal bent, and I liked Paige. I remember also not liking the other character (who also made a lot of creepy and suggestive comments during their fake dating one, iirc)… I didn’t enjoy the next one I read from her, so… idk. I might give another try to another one bc I like Abby Craden’s narration, but… idk, it’s possibly we rlly don’t vibe.

I rarely DNF audiobooks but I almost did with this one, only five chapters in. One: Sleeping with your brother’s girlfriend, even if he stole her first, is not okay. Just because someone is terrible doesn’t mean you have to behave the same way. Second, I would not let Holly touch me with a stick after what she did, so Abby being afraid to be tempted is beyond my understanding. Three: repeatedly calling Holly a lesbian is biphobic to me. Four: the counteroffer from Nic tarnished the romance a bit for me ( I know joy killer). I also found Holly to be a bit of a caricature of someone mean, and I don’t understand how Abby’s parents could bless their son’s wedding with someone so awful, knowing everything they know. But I did finish: I ended up being really invested, and I really liked how Nic and Abby got closer. They are really sweet together. Seeing someone with an awful childhood like Nic, with the worst trauma I have ever read, get her HEA felt really hopeful. And seeing Holly being rejected was so satisfying. Overall, I had a good time listening to it; it was short, cozy, and perfect for the season, but there were some details that felt a tad wrong.

Rounding up for this one despite a few bumps.

This is one of the most sane Christmas romances I have ever read. The setting and the characters all felt like real humans navigating around the holiday season. The reasons for the "Christmas Grinch" character was quite a bold decision that I really appreciated.

There was lots of communication and respect between the love interests you couldn't help but root for them.

Despite the really amazing parts, there were some pretty cringey parts. First, Abby's ex is referred to as either a lesbian or straight for most of the read. The classic two orientations in lesfics 😞. Probably would have been less of an issue if it we got more of a backstory or reasoning but instead it just ended up as a series of awkward interactions and speculation. The second part that bothered me were descriptions of how skinny Abby was and her lecturing her coworker on why her fad diets never work. I thought these things were going to lead some interesting character trauma reveals but instead she was just quite skinny without trying.

Worth a read if you can get past some awkward bi erasure. There are some heavy parts with mention of alcoholism, poverty, and death. Take care of yourself if you decide to pick it up.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.

I love this read with one of my favorite tropes. Great Christmas romance

Abby is dreading going home for Christmas holiday it’s not that she doesn’t want to spend time with her family it’s she doesn’t want to see her ex Holly who happens to be engage to her brother Aaron. She afraid she fall for her Holly charms and get sucked back in like she did last Christmas she gets idea to have a fake girlfriend as a buffer between them although her friends thinks she crazy and should tell Holly off and talk with her brother she doesn’t want to ruin her family holiday.

Nicky aka Nic has baggage that she carries around that baggage prevents her from forming romantic attachment but she does has a few friends she let’s gets close. She doesn’t care for the holidays and you’ll find out why. When she approached by Abby with a proposal to pretend to be her girlfriend she accepts with a stipulation that Abby balks at but decides to accept although she won’t go through with it.

Abby and Nic grow closer and start to have feelings but go their separate ways but neither one can forget the other. There’s little angst with Nic believing she isn’t good enough for Abby because who she dates and Abby thinking Nic would never let someone love her.

Well this is why Gerri Hill is one of my favorite authors. She took an old storyline of "Faux Romance" and made it into something special.
It was a little slow getting started but from the time they got into the car, to drive to Abby's parents house, it was full of clever dialog, warmth and romance.
I loved the two main characters, Abby and Nic. They had so much chemistry. I loved viewing Abby's parents home, the Christmas decorations and of course the snow, through Nic's eyes. It was magical and child like all at the same time.
In addition to the developing romance, there were several other important side stories. Abby's ex-girlfriend is now engaged to Abby's brother; the parents troubled marriage and Nic's secret past. All were very interesting, entertaining and important to the story.
My only disappointment was the abrupt ending. I actually thumbed back and forth thinking something was wrong with the pages. No, it can't end just like that. Where was the epilogue? I wanted more. That's the only reason I rated it 4 stars.
And I just discovered the audiobook is available narrated by Abby Craden (Another one of my favorites) Oooh I can already imagine Nic's voice.
I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What a beautiful and fun read. For those that enjoy Christmas and all the traditions that go with it, this is the read for you. Abby Carpenter, business women with an unsettled past with her ex and an estranged relationship with her brother. She is looking for a fake girlfriend to take home for the holidays. Nic Bennett, landscape artist, due to past childhood events, she is not looking for a relationship. Serving as a fake girlfriend is perfect. Little due both women know is a memorable Christmas is about to unfold. The ex-girlfriend, all I can say is wow. Unsure what words to say about the laid back brother. The parents and friends were wonderful.

This read had me thinking about family and friends as we gather around for the holidays. Which person or persons are going to be the center of attention this year and why. Ho Ho Ho, what fun!!

I’m a sucker for fauxmances. I love everything about them. The tension, the awkwardness, the “oh no, it’s only one bed!” Kind of situations, but this didn’t have those tropes, it was so cute and direct and that stupid stipulation pissed me off so much (but I got over it soooooo fast), but it wasn’t a real issue in the end. The chemistry and how relaxed the MCs where with each other was so good! Holly and the brother where almost irrelevant, but necessary for the plot, without extra unnecessary drama. The only prominent second character was Abby’s mom, and she was delightful. Great book.
