Do I Need to See a Therapist?: How to understand your emotions and make therapy work for you

Rate this book
Why is the idea of asking for professional help still so taboo? Why are we afraid of our emotions?

Do I Need to See a Therapist? provides insight into how we can acknowledge and overcome the fear of being thought mad, weak or helpless.

In this empathetic and practical guide, psychotherapist Donna Maria Bottomley examines these anxieties and argues that therapy should be just as acceptable as seeing a GP or booking your car into the garage and needn’t be our last resort.

I listened to this book, as an audio book it can be a little disjointed as it is full of lists! It’s probably a better book to have a physical copy of so you can refer back as needed. I am just starting a degree course to become a psychotherapist so I found this good, with lots of nuggets of information that will help lead me on my way. Sometimes it felt as though the author got to some ‘juicy’ bits and then put them back down and moved onto another topic.
I know how hard it is to write an essay on psychotherapy so the author should be very proud of her book, even if it only makes a small difference, that’s better than no difference!

Audiobook, loving how she read really soft and clear. Keep me focus in many points that are really important. Most of her questions were really close to my feelings and well explain. Is a really good source of information about past and myself in the present. It has so many information that is confusing for a not medical professionals.

A good book on self-growth.
It includes more information than just whether you need a therapist.
It includes a variety of exercises to practise as well as fast practical tricks to aid you on a regular basis.

More points I took from the book:
●It states that emotions are a wave that comes and goes. Learn to ride the wave; don't fear it, don't hide from it; instead acknowledge it, and know that it will pass.
●To manage emotions, focus on physical sensations rather than looping ideas. Observe how your breath quickens, a tiny tingle in your fingertips, a headache building in what section of your head, heat in your cheeks, a tight feeling in your stomach, and so on.
●Try journaling before bed to calm your mind.

Glazed over a lot of the details. Read during an inpatient stay and it found it to be a decent companion read.

An insightful and informative read. There was lots of information and explanations for our feelings and thoughts and how to decide if you would benefit from getting some additional therapy. Its also good for setting expectations of what to expect if you do decide to see a therapist from how they will interact with you, how the sessions will go, to possible types of treatments they may utilise to assist you. I know how hard it is to write an essay on psychotherapy so the author should be very proud of her book, even if it only makes a small difference, that’s better than no difference! Definitely worth a read if you are considering seeing a therapist, or are even seeing one, or have a loved one who is. #donnamariebottomley #doineedtoseeatherapist #tea_sipping_bookworm #selfhelp #goodreads #thestorygraph #litsy #bookqueen #bookstagram #amazonaustralia #amazonkindle
