Worthless Boys #2

High and Hopeless

Rate this book
In my head, I see him. My very straight best friend. The one I will never have.

Teddy

I’ve never felt like I fit in, but that changed the day I met him. Liam West. He was larger than life-- even back when we were kids. He protected me from every awful thing life threw at me, but somewhere along the way my fascination with him turned into something more. Something filled with pain. I’ve tried to put distance between us, but it never works. Liam will never let me get too far from him. All I can do is stay high enough to forget the hopelessness of it all.

Liam

Getting my life together hasn’t been easy. I work hard and take care of the people I care about, but the one person who matters the most is pulling away from me. My longest and only best friend. He’s becoming more and more self-destructive, and he expects me to turn the other cheek. Not happening. Teddy has always needed me, and I’m starting to realize I might need him just as much, if not more.

High and Hopeless is book two in the Worthless Boys trilogy and is a NA friends-to-lovers MM romance. It can be read as a standalone. Please read the content warning before beginning as there are dark themes that may be triggering to some readers.

This story is about Teddy and Liam, who have been friends since early childhood. They have been inseparable from the very beginning and no one can come between them. They are as close as can be, and Liam’s stoic disposition only ever softens in Teddy’s sweet and sunshiny presence.
Liam also has a bit of a protector role over Teddy, and when they got to high school, Teddy easily developed a strong crush on him that developed into love. However, Liam has always been straight, and now that they have left high school behind them, Teddy decides he must distance himself from his best friend to get over this unrequited love. The problem, though, is that Liam will never let that happen. No one means more to him than Teddy and he will do anything to keep him in his life, right next to him, where he belongs, forever.

This is really quite a gritty story as it focuses on a group of boys who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. They are poor, often have shitty parents, and do all kinds of drugs. Liam and Teddy truly were each other’s rocks and when times got rough, they used their friendship for comfort and to hold onto their sanity. It was obvious how much they cared about each other, and I loved how Liam only ever truly felt comfortable with Teddy and no one else. They were each other’s person.

“Of course I love him. I love him more than anyone or anything else on this fucked-up planet.”

I really loved how shockingly steady Liam was in his complete and utter devotion for Teddy. Nothing deterred him. No gay freak-out and no angry feelings about anything that happened: as long as Teddy was happy and with him, he was content. He just loved Teddy so much and that’s all he cared about.

“Did I ever tell you why I call you my golden angel? In my head, you’re like sunshine. Just this beacon of light that no one can help being drawn to. You’re warmth and kindness and laughter. It’s intoxicating. For someone like me who always feels dull, you’re like a miracle—the way you’ve always made me feel so much when nothing else does. Nothing or no one even stand a chance in comparison. You shine too bright.”

These two were honestly just so utterly in love with each other. Teddy adored Liam and was convinced he hung the moon and stars. Meanwhile, Liam thought Teddy was quite literally the sun, and that nothing shone brighter than him. He was also extremely possessive and protective of him.

“You’re so fucking perfect, it’s insane how anyone could look like this, like a God or something.”
I scoff. “Says you. You’re the angel. I’m a mere fucking mortal at your feet.” His eyes go comically wide. “When will you finally see the hold you have on me?”

Their relationship was just so lovely. It was sweet, swoon-worthy, devoted and all-consuming.
However, the reason I didn’t end up loving this book is because it was way too smutty for me. I wanted more meaningful conversations and depth between them instead of so much sex.

If you guys didn’t know by now. i love a good MM romance with a guy pining after his VERY STRAIGHT best friend

I wasn’t interested in the first book but after reading this one, I’m wondering if I should give it a shot. BUT THIS WAS GOOD. No toxic push and pull. More of a “I want you, you’re mine, let’s give this a go”. Highly recommend it you guys🥵

Sweet baby Jesus, that was *ahem* entertaining!

This is my second book by this author. I've read book #1 two days ago, liked it, and decided to give book #2 a chance. Note: They can be read as a standalone.

My intention was just to read a few pages coz I needed an early night sleep, but guess what? I ended up reading half of the book in one go.

My highlights:

📌 I loved the MCs.
📌 the best-friend-pining-over-straight-friend plot was top notch.
📌 the atmosphere created in the story (weather, beach, skating board, living in a motel and even the drugs trips, was super vivid!
🔥 But what really did for me was The.Tension . I loooooved the tension between Liam and Teddy!

***SPOILER QUOTES AHEAD****

Safe to say the author does have a knack for creating tension since both stories present a good dose of it, oh so appealing and delicious.

🔥🔥 On top of that, I've noticed another similarity between both stories, scratch that, allow me to use the term ™, the growling possessive type.

Dear lawd, I eat that shit with a big spoon, Every.Single.Ttime.

They really make my fictional world more fun!

Book #1 Cruel and Careless 3.5 stars!!

Bring on book #3!!!!!!!

He meets my eyes and the intensity in his dark gaze claws at my insides. "Did I ever tell you why I call you my golden angel? I don't think I have," he says. I shake my head.
He clears his throat. "In my head, you're like sunshine. Just this beacon of light that no one can help being drawn to. You're warmth and kindness and laughter. It's intoxicating. For someone like me who's always dull, you're like a miracle—the way you've always made me feel so much when nothing else does. Nothing or no one even stands a chance in comparison. You shine too bright."

this was cute af!! i personally loved this much more than book one. i already felt an attachment towards Liam and Teddy from the previous book and my love for them only grew stronger here. unlike book one, i loved how this focused on both the physical AND emotional aspect of their relationship. my issue with the first book was how, to me, it felt like the physical relationship between the mcs was the main focus of their relationship and if you know me, you know i'm more into the emotional side of romance lol. there were so many cute moments between Liam and Teddy and i was living for it.
description

my heart broke for Teddy bc of what he's been through. :( he deserves the world and, like Liam said, he truly is the light of anyone he comes across. he has that aura of someone you just wanna protect. Liam, on the other hand, was more grumpy and reserved, in contrast to Teddy's sunshine personality, but i loved his protectiveness and the way he grew up as humble. 🥺 these two were a perfect match and thank god for no miscommunications. i'm also glad Liam's mom eventually accepted them by the end.

i did have a few issues (or things i wanted to bring up) with this book:

OK SO ARE WE JUST GONNA IGNORE THE POTENTIAL OF ANT AND .

sidenote: always a pleasure to br with my fav person to fangirl/rant with, elena! im glad this one worked out for us. ♡

❝ He stands up abruptly and pulls me into his arms, hugging me tightly. He's so much bigger than me, it feels like I´m cocooned in his warmth. I finally allow myself to relax against him again, burying my head into the base of his neck. ❞

my bulleted thoughts:
➵ highly enjoyed book 1 but i must admit this was so much better. the usual trope but pulled off really well.
➵ if there was a story that deserved a 5oo-page treatment, i think this is it. so many off-book events that i would enjoy to read in here that would lead to their delicious romance.
➵ not really much of a plot but just the striaght up of characters romancing each other up.
➵ best-friends to lovers / pining for the straight friend / possessive alpha male meets his match with his sunshine of a best friend.
➵ the way liam calls teddy his golden angel def added a few years in my lifespan.
➵ loved the first half a bit more than the rest.
➵ why do hot people are always oblivious when someones crushing on them??
➵ loved how this book is just drama-free for both mcs!
➵ their size difference!
➵ a missed opportunity: a scene both of them skateboarding while holding hands and/or flirting with each other. under a beautiful sunset ofc.

Five Golden Angel Stars

Let me say how much I am loving this series. High And Hopeless exceeded my expectations. It’s an MM, friends to lovers, and my favorite trope straight to gay. What was also unique is this book touches on different types of sexuality. To be honest, it’s very refreshing.

Imagine being in love with your straight best friend and trying to get past it, but you can’t. That is what Teddy is dealing with. And let me tell you, I could feel all his pain. His straight best friend Liam is grumpy and possessive of Teddy. Liam is afraid that Teddy is pulling away from him. He is very upfront and has no problem telling it how it is.

This book gave me all the feels. I devoured it in one
sitting and just couldn’t put it down. Teddy is just so precious. So far, he is
my favorite out of the gang. I never expected Liam to be such a hot dirty
talker and I’m thoroughly impressed. And when he decides on something, he gives 110%. Especially where Teddy is involved. Bailey Nicole is one of the top new authors of 2021.I eagerly look forward to see what is next.

I love this book so much. Liam and Teddy are my babies They deserve so much love and all the cuddles. It's friends to lovers. Idk why people hate on this trope I love it coz of all the pining.

Here are my favourite details (MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!)

1:) Liam's Possessiveness

“Let me burn you" [...] I burned teddy with a cigarette because I wanted to put a mark on him that won’t go away. Asher’s stupid fucking hickey will be gone by tomorrow"

2:) GOLDEN ANGEL

“I can’t help but smile at the sight of him.
My golden fucking angel.”

3:) Liam just accepting he's attracted to teddy and diving in headfirst

"Ungh… are you sure? U-usually people start with a hand job or something?” [...] “Why would I do that? I’m not going to treat you any differently than any other person I’ve been with. We’ve waited long enough."

4:) The TATTOO

"For me. He got a tattoo for me. Because I’m his golden angel, and he loves me."

These two were just so in love with each other. Their relationship was so lovely. It was sweet and swoon-worthy

5/5 stars for Liam and his Golden Angel!

This book was exactly everything I'd hoped it would be. It was just so Liam and Teddy.🥺 In book 1, Cruel and Careless, we get a glimpse of not only their dynamic, but a brewing tension stemming from Teddy's hidden feelings. Well, this tension is carried through to the first few chapters of the second book, and it's the kind that hurts so good.

I knew going in, that other than the unrequited love (not really) aspect, their relationship wouldn't have as much angst surrounding it as with Ben and Damon because, LIAM. Liam knows what, and who he wants and it's that simple for him. There is no bullshitting or beating around the bush. The moment he realizes that he wants Teddy, he goes for it. That was so hot!😩🥵

"Your parts don't matter to me - as long as they're all mine. If that makes me gay, then so be it."

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! Loved all the Ben and Damon cameos (one scene with them really took me out haha). Loved all the action. Loved Mads. And of course, I loved the progression of the story. It was on brand with the author's way of storytelling. I am so in awe because Bailey Nicole has an unique ability to carry the reader through a story. I INHALED THIS BOOK. It isn't very long but I surprised myself with how quickly I finished it. It truly was everything I'd hoped it would be 🖤

Also Ant NEEDS a book, and he NEEDS to get together with you know who

That's all.

“I think a lot of people might take one look at us and say the same thing—we don’t match. Not from the outside at least. But it’s simply not true. Liam is my rock, and I’m his sunshine.”

I’ve totally read this book bc it’s cover and luckily it was a win!!

-best friends to lover
-bi-awakening
-losing the v card
-grumpy-sunshine
-size difference
-college age MCs
-medium angst, but watch out for the triggers!
- can read as standalone ( but I think I would like it more if I’d read the first book in the series)
-lovely hea

I loved that this guys have simple life, they come from the poor side and in the end they try to make solid foundation for themselves. I loved that the book focuses on their relationship and it’s direct affect around them only. Overall it was a really enjoyable read for me, this two is amazing ☺️
I hope Mad will get his own book too!

"But the entire time, it's not his face that I see in my head. It's not his voice that I hear groaning my name. In my head, I see him. My very straight best friend. The one I will never have. Liam."

I loved this second instalment in the Worthless Boys series by Bailey Nicole 💙💜.

High and Hopeless is Teddy and Liam's story. We were first introduced to them in Cruel and Careless and I've got to say I was very excited for this one. I love that we have some much needed diversity in a NA book, with Teddy and Liam being an interracial couple. Not to mention all the other trope boxes of mine that it ticked:

🌶Best friends to lovers
🌶First times
🌶Bi awakening/GFY
🌶Grumpy/Sunshine
🌶Opposites attract

Be warned though, there are some dark themes (drug use, abuse) so check the TW.

Teddy was such a cutie and Liam was so possessive and protective. And yes, they are HOT together 🔥🔥.

Loved it 😍.

Recommended.

I’ve finally remembered what this series reminds me of! It’s like that old TV show, Skins? Only with more drugs and gay sex. 😂 It’s entertaining in the exact same way — you read and you wonder, is this really some kids’ daily life, somewhere? Yep, it probably is.

Teddy and Liam were so sweet here. Their story wasn’t as angsty as I’ve been expecting, but it turned out to be a good thing. There wasn’t as much unnecessary drama as in book 1, their friendship was too strong for that. This was bit corny in places, and I didn’t care for the religious parent trope (though she came around in the end), but overall I liked it more than the prequel.

I’m waiting for Jasper and Ant’s story. Enemies-to-lovers? Dick piercings and threesomes? 😏 Count me in.

2 stars ⭐️ A straight friend becoming his closest friend's lover is one of my favorite tropes, but it didn't work for me here. I didn't care about the characters. I don't give a damn if they end up together or not. Both teenagers were always high and hopeless.

“I’m balls deep in my best friend, a guy. And for some reason, my cock is harder than it’s ever been. And the loud moan he just let out nearly made me come.”

4.5⭐️

You know me, friends to lovers is my favorite trope and this one didn’t disappoint. This series is probably not for everyone but I enjoy the more I suppose “grungy” lifestyle in these compared to loves of billionaires since I can relate to it more. Teddy and Liam where bond to fuck and fall in love with one another, and that’s what we got. I mean of course we had to have some drama, some sad pinning, but yay no third act breakup. Because Liam wouldn’t have that. Liam is a possessive as fuck person when it comes to Teddy and always has been since they were children so it makes sense that once these two cum together they stay together. This was basically a story of a dude loving a dude and they fuck and say hey let’s love each other forever and not do drugs a lot anymore. Good for them. Anyways yeah I enjoyed this book, not a lot of stuff actually happened but I was entertained that’s for sure.

In another surprising twist, I think I liked the first book better? This one has a lot less angst in the relationship department which is usually what I prefer so I’m really surprised I didn’t love it. It was still a good read tho.

This was one of the best best friends to lovers I have read.

Teddy and Liam were so cute together. And I adored Liam, he went after what he wants and didn't bullshit himself or others. He was such a refreshing MC to read. There wasn't this typical inner struggle and monologue for this trope here and I loved that! The first book is still my favourite one, but this was also so goood!!! 🤌😍

P.S. I really, really, really want a book about Ant and you know who! 🥺

i usually don’t like to rate books that i dnf, but dammit i deserve to with this one. i went back and forth between the audio and ebook, and neither could hold my attention. i really wanted to finish this series, but they all consist of boys who are addicted to drugs and sex and it’s starting to get repetitive. as for liam and teddy, i pretty much got the gist of where the rest of this book was headed. cool—i know they’re going to get their hea, i just don’t care anymore :p

I’ve been waiting for this book and it didn’t disappoint. It was super sweet and dirty. Holy crap Liam is so possessive and domineering and it made the sex scenes super steamy with his need for control and his filthy dirty talk. This can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend reading the first one in this series before starting this one because going in, I already felt the angst this book was about to bring and it made it that much better. Liam & Teddy have a special one of a kind friendship and over the years Teddy has fallen in love with his straight best friend. In book one, Teddy had already started to distance himself from Liam because it hurt him too much to be around Liam and know they can never be more than just friends. Unrequited love or is it?

What I liked about this book was when Liam made a decision, he was all in. At first, I was kind of surprised by how in he was considering…but it made sense given his devotion to Teddy. Teddy had always been his person and once Liam figured out what was going on, there was no changing his mind. There were no stupid misunderstandings or breakups once they got on the same page and I loved that. But I didn’t feel like the storyline in this one was as strong as book one once they got together. The beginning was super angsty and then BAM!, it changed so fast that it almost felt like I was reading a different book. But I will forgive this author as it’s only her second novel and she can only get better from here.

“Love is a fucked-up thing, aint it?”

I love 'childhood best friends to lovers' more than anything, so it pains me to say this but I I didn't feel that way about High and Hopeless - at all. It just didn't cut it for me - and it sucks because the cover of this book is so very swoon-worthy. ❤️‍🔥😍😍❤️‍🔥

I liked how protective Liam is of Teddy - possessively so. I liked that even though Teddy seems to get himself high to drown away his feelings - he's very true to his love for Liam - how he's utterly hopeless to refuse Teddy in every way - I enjoyed that. Seeing how tight-knit this little found family still is and how supportive, just looking out for each other, and encouraging they were when they saw that Teddy's crush was no longer an unrequited one was also so very precious. 🩷🩷🩷

“I think a lot of people might take one look at us and say the same thing—we don’t match. Not from the outside at least. But it’s simply not true.”

I loved that even before they took that next step - they were already so affectionate and intimate with one another - being comfortable and vulnerable around each other - the cuddling, the snuggling. There was a lovely balance between their adorably sweet scenes and intensely spicy moments shared between the two that showed that even if they're so very different - they still fit very well with each other. How Teddy was over the moon once he and Liam got together - like the 'golden angel' - the irresistible teddy bear that he was. 🥰 🥰 The little glimpses into their past and present lives - the future they were hoping to build together - the simple and happy life they were both trying to find a way to have was also nice to see that made it all the more worthwhile.

“Liam is my rock, and I’m his sunshine. I’ve come to accept that I inspire him in the same way he does me, and that’s something worth hanging on to.”

And yet, as sweet and simple as this story was - that's really all it was. And maybe that's on me - thinking there would be more to the plot than just sex and drugs - and a little action that unexpectedly took place at the end to show the seriousness of their relationship. I just couldn't connect with either of them - there wasn't enough for me to be emotionally invested.

Perhaps my biggest issue would have to be with the writing - there was something so very OFF about it - very abrupt and quick - not really giving us time to actually SEE Liam's sudden bi-awakening - it was just too quick - unrealistically so. One minute he's willing to take a leap with Teddy, because they're already so close and then they're just jumping into the sack every chance they get. I get it - they've been already close for so long - they've skipped the whole mate and dance routine. So if Liam is happy with Teddy - abandoning all his previous notions about only being straight, then that's fine - it just wasn't something that I believed in. And maybe it actually does work this way, and my feelings are rather unwarranted and misplaced. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

"Do you want to hear a story? It starts off kind of sad, but there’s beauty in small beginnings. It has a happy ending...Two poor boys living in the same hotel met outside one day. They looked very different from the outside—one small, one tall. The taller one took one look at him and decided he was his. He’d be his person forever."

3.5 stars

This was a really sweet story between two childhood friends who become more. I'd loved the glimpses of their relationship in book one, so I was excited for this. I adored how affectionate their friendship was even before it became something more, and I loved how possessive and protective Liam was of "his golden angel." The only reason this got a slightly lower rating than book one was because I wasn't as emotionally invested. There's surprisingly little angst, as the central conflict is resolved before the halfway mark. Nevertheless, I did like this and I'm especially excited for whenever the author writes book three, because I adore the dynamic that already exists between Ant and Jazz.

it's amazing how clueless people can be sometimes. was it really so hard to understand that Teddy has a crush on Liam? Liam knows that something is wrong, but doesn't realize that Teddy doesn't want to be just his best friend anymore and that this hurts ... is it me, or are people just basically stupid? ... Sorry, I'm rambling.
Anyway, apart from Liam's stupidity at the beginning, this story is wonderful. Sweet and magnificent. After the initial confusion of feelings everything becomes simply wonderful.
And Liam goes from zero to a hundred in a matter of moments. After understanding Teddy's feelings, he's immediately on board. It only takes a single kiss and the two can no longer be separated. There is no bullshit of insecurities, instead Liam is absolutely into Teddy and he is and always will be his number one person. Gorgeous!
It's refreshing how Liam deals with his sexuality. It's nice to see such a process without the tentative first baby steps.
Well so much for not saying the sex is incredibly naughty 😋😋😋 and hot 🔥🔥🔥
Waiting for the next book … 👀

I thought I loved Ben and Damon, and I absolutely do. But damn, my love for Liam and Teddy are next level. Enemies to lovers will always be my favorite, but there is something to be said about friends or best friends to lovers. And after reading this I desperately need more.

Teddy has been in love with Liam for years, and I can understand why. He's fierce and loyal, a real ride or die kind of guy. He loves his small circle of friends, but him and Teddy are different. When Teddy brings his new boyfriend around Liam doesn't like it one bit. Things are said and punches are thrown and there's no question who Teddy is going to side with...

Problem is, Teddy was staying with his boyfriend. Soooo when Liam offers Teddy to come live with him, Teddy is torn, because of course he wants to be around his best friend all the time. But it's also tearing him up inside to be around the man he's in love with all day everyday.

To say tensions are high between them would be an understatement. And it's only a matter of time before Teddy's biggest secret is revealed. He tries, he pushes it down so hard. He doesn't want to ruin the most important relationship in his life.

I was blown away by everything in this book. I love how Bailey wrote the characters. The vibes in this series is everything. The spice is *chef's kiss*. It's sweet and heartfelt, but also the tension and heartache is stifling. The way Teddy loves Liam is just beautiful and the possessive and demanding way Liam loves Teddy will melt your heart. This is an interracial couple and that makes me beyond ecstatic. Diversity is severely needed in the romance/NA genre. Please do yourself a favor and read this book!

First time read for one of Bailey Nicole's books and I was thoroughly riveted for the entire book (yes I randomly picked up book 2 first because of my scattered brain). I really, really liked this!

The MCs were really likeable. The angst and tension between them was palpable. Bailey did a wonderful job for the pining-for-my-straight-best-friend trope. I loved the atmosphere she created with their skateboards, the beach, living in the motel; even the drug trips were intense and vivid. This was just a super easy, enjoyable read that has locked me in to read more of her books.

***trigger warnings: drug use, gun violence, alcoholism (not MC), mention of past child abuse/neglect

4.35 Stars (Yes, I am that specific with my ratings)

I’m just gonna say, Teddy and Liam supremacy. Those two stole my little, bitter, acid heart.

Teddy is not only a smol bean, but my smol bean. Sunshine, angel, perfection boy. He has been through so much and still radiates light and happiness. The way he treats people, sees the world, loves, is just beautiful.

Liam is my "I hate everything in the world but Teddy" perfect boy. He’s so closed off but completely changes with Teddy. He shows his true self only to his golden angel and I find that beautiful.

I really enjoyed this book. Liam and Teddy just stole my heart. And I melted because of their adorableness.

I completely recommend this book, and I even liked it a little bit more than Cruel and Careless. This was awesome. Toodles!

cute

Friends to lovers isn’t my jam anyway but these two are cute. I’d probably give this one a 3.5 but it’s just a little underwhelming for me. I love the characters, but kinda wanted more …intensity?

This was a reread! I’ve read this years ago and I still remembered the whole plot so goes to show even if a story isn’t your typical jam, if it’s good it stays with you!
