A hero with big expectations. A daughter who doesn’t want to live in his shadow.
Siti Kassis joins her father, the “Hero of Darenti Four,” on his last assignment: to find and explore the deserted homeworld of mankind. It’s a twenty-year mission, and a chance to make history--even if twenty years in deep sleep is a bummer of a way to start her “gap year.” But what awaits them is beyond everyone's expectations.
This volume includes:
The Earth Concurrence
When Siti reaches Earth with the CEC, nothing is as they expected. Dangerous conditions and unexpected enemies cause her father to overreact, keeping Siti on a tight leash. When tragedy strikes, Siti must take matters into her own hands. Can the hero’s daughter save the day?
The Grissom Contention
Fresh from the mission to Earth, Siti enrolls in the Colonial Explorer Corps Academy--the same academy where her father was the captain of the grav-ball team, and still holds flight records for the extreme piloting competitions. As the daughter of a revered alum, she's expected to lead the legacy students to victory in every training scenario and game.
But Siti wants to prove her own worth. Shunned by the other legacies when she refuses to play by their unfair rules, she joins a band of misfits for her class's most arduous trial: Prime Survival Week.
The Saha Declination
Siti excelled at the Academy, earning honors and respect. She has one last cadet mission before she graduates, but it should be easy. She'll be the most junior member of an established Explorer Corps team landing on a partially explored planet. With decades of experience and the full support of the corps, what could go wrong?
Author of the Colonial Exploration Corps, Space Janitor, Recycled World, and Krimson Empire series.
I grew up in the US Pacific Northwest, and after twenty years roaming the country with the US Air Force, I'm back. I have a spouse, three kids, and a dog named Pippin.
I've been an IT guy, a choir director, an executive assistant, a stay-at-home mom, a college instructor, and that lady at the information booth in a tourist town. But writer is the best job ever, because I get to make stuff up. Stuff I wish were true; stuff I'm glad isn't true.
When I'm not writing, I like to knit, read, bake, and ski. I also love to travel.
An easy-to-read trilogy featuring Siti Kassis, who attends the academy to become a colonial explorer. These stories follow her adventures as she strives to graduate and begin her career as an officer in the CEC.
Great stories, no cliffhangers, well written! I read these books as singles, so this is a great opportunity! My reviews for each book are below: The Earth Concurrence - Great story, well written, interesting, and some old friends! I really enjoyed reading this. Why? Well, at first I was just enjoying the story, which was fine, then after a while I realised it was a return to the world of the 'Recycled World' series, although it wouldn't matter at all if you haven't read that series. However, for those of us who have, it is great! We see how things have progressed - I'm not sure how much later this is, but it doesn't really matter - it works! We have a totally new bunch of people, on a mission, and I can't say much more as I hate spoilers. They meet up with the people some of us already know, and of course nobody trusts anyone. Possibly with good reason, but are they mistrusting the right people? Anyway, there is a ton of action which I like, a lot of stuff I found interesting, and I also enjoyed it as it wasn't very predictable, which sounds odd but read it and you will see what I mean. It seemed to start off as a 'military' scifi book, which I am not crazy about, but rapidly I found out that it wasn't really like that, and despite finding out that there was a new classification in ranking on Amazon that I hadn't even heard of - don't worry about that stuff. Read this because it is great story, well written, interesting, and for me, during lockdown and needing a distraction - it was wonderful. The Grissom Contention - Compelling and hard to put down! I really enjoyed reading this book - a continuation of the series, but it would be perfectly easy to read this book as a stand alone. In this book, Siti is now at the Colonial Explorer Corps Academy, trying to fit in and trying to stay in the academy, with a high attrition rate. I found the book to be really compelling, hard to put down and full of action. The descriptions of the environment and the world they were on were deftly inserted into the prose so that they were not distracting, but very believable. The characters were interesting - some very annoying, but believable all the same. I kept picking this book up and suddenly found I was at the end - a satisfying end, no cliffhangers, but I am definitely looking forward to any further books in this series. The Saha Declination - Great story, good pacing, kept my interest! This was a great story, with good pacing and it kept my interest throughout! I do love stories with lots of action, which both this book and this series do have, plus the occasional lighter moment. I also like it that although this is part of a series, and the best read will come from going through the series in order, each book is a story in its own right (no cliffhangers!!) and so does make a good and satisfying read. This was a story that was hard to put down, and I found the characters to be well developed and, fortunately, believable. I do love good scifi, and this is that, and although the tech is more of what we might imagine the future to be, the feeling of this book, with the great story and good action, reminds me of some of the classic scifi which I grew up on (a long time ago). That is a very good thing indeed.
I really enjoyed these stories and would love to read more in the series! Liam FTW!
The Earth Concurrence - 4/5 stars Fun start to a new-to-me series that makes me want to read more. Good thing this is a boxed set! :) I enjoy Julia Huni's writing, her vivid world building, and the way she brings her characters to life. Next, please!
The Grissom Contention - 5/5 stars What a fun ride! Siti has grown up a lot since the first book in the series, and it was fun to reconnect with old friends from Earth as well as get to know a whole bunch new ones - not to forget a whole new set of (fr)enemies. This was another well-written, entertaining adventure that kept me up way past my bedtime.
The Saha Declination - 5/5 stars I thoroughly enjoyed Siti's latest adventure! It was fun to meet familiar faces as well as get to know new friends and foes as well. Like many readers, I am a big fan of Liam, sair-glider extraordinaire, and I'd love to read more about this special little fellow, not only since he often seems to be the brain of the group.
This series just keeps getting better and better, and I hope there will be more CEC stories in the future. Pretty please?
Great adventure tale set 500 years in the future as we join the Colonial Exploration corp on a 20 year trip to Earth to see how it’s recovered from the mass exodus centuries earlier. The tale unfold from the perspective of a young girl accompanying her father on the mission. Book 2 and 3 continue the adventures both at the CEC academy and on a newly discovered planet. I sure hope there are more tales to come. I really want to know what’s up with Liam, think there is a good mystery there.
Although the main characters are young, CEC should appeal to sci fi fans of any age. The lack of young adult angst is refreshing. The worldbuilding is great and believable, the characters are fascinating (although Siti did annoy me in the beginning), and the stories are thrilling tales of strange planets. Liam is a fascinating and fun addition to the books; I hope the mystery of his origin plays a part in future stories. I highly recommend this series.
A fun, light sci-fi adventure that didn’t take any risks but aimed to entertain, and did it well.
I try not to harp on minor language issues, but am I the only one who paid attention to all the “eye narrowing” the characters did, sometimes twice per page? A quick search found ~68 variations of “eyes narrowed,” which started to get comical—all the characters going around squinting at each other like they lost their contact lenses, or something :)
Good character development over the arc of the tale. World building is a bit thin but covering multiple planets that is probably the best the author could do and keep the series under 2000 pages. A good read.
Such a captivating series, looking forward to more of the same, written with great flair and humour without any bad language and crudity, such a pleasure.
Great story telling and compelling characters throughout. Very believable scenarios, how do I find one of those Gliders? Will definitely be downloading more of this series.
The story isn't quite what the blurb suggests. (The good news is that it's better.) There are three books in this boxed set, making for a easy, long read. The stories don't demand much of the reader, using a handful of fairly common tropes.
There were missed opportunities to explore what it means to explore the galaxy, how humanity sees its future, who we want to become, etc., but, again, that's fairly common. These books aren't about philosophy, just regular "coming of age" stories. Still. A decent read.
