‘This sequel captures the essence of my novel and takes my characters on a tense and dangerous journey through the world of The Severed Land.’ - Maurice GeePicking up where The Severed Land left off, this suspense-filled novel continues the story of the brave ex-slave Fliss. Despite her idyllic new life behind the safety of the wall, she can’t help longing for someone special of her own. That's when a young man appears, preaching peace and unity. His arrival, however, is about to send Fliss and her friend Minnie back through the wall on a hazardous mission. There’s danger at every corner, perilous journeys and the constant threat of betrayal and capture.
I’m not sure where to start… I really enjoyed The Severed Land. So I was intrigued to see that a sequel had been written, and so highly endorsed by Maurice Gee as true to the spirit of the original. I was underwhelmed…this story lacked originality and inspiration. The integrity of many of the characters from the Maurice Gee original is lost and they make infuriatingly out of character decisions and Fliss instead of head strong, quiet but charismatic is now talkative, annoying and submissive, a follower rather than a leader. Don’t get me started on the flirtation between Fliss and Darby… what was the point? they had no chemistry and it drove the story in no way what’s so ever. I realise this is young adult fiction… but the writing was… obvious? Everything was over explained and the obvious was always pointed out to the reader… The author also chose bizarrely high level words, that I as an adult had to look up the definition for. Sorry Tony Chapelle.
