Once upon a time, a claustrophobic schoolteacher collided with a broody rock star in a finicky elevator...

Vienna Shaw doesn't do risky, edgy, or anything on the wild side. She's the woman who thinks The Goonies is a horror movie and lives for Austen-era romance novels.

So, when a night out of her comfort zone ends up in a nightmarish elevator, all the risks she never took spill to the stranger in the corner: actually see The Goonies, ride a rollercoaster, and get that heart-melting kiss people will write books about.

She didn't expect the smoldering guy with tattoos to step up and knock one of those things off her list.

They survive.
Hearts melt.
He leaves without giving his name.

Until a school assembly is hosted by the rock band from the concert, and Rees Hayden, the bassist who rarely cracks a smile, bears an uncanny resemblance to the man in the elevator.

Turns out, Vienna kissed a rock star. And he isn’t even close to done with her yet.

When opposites attract will it be the perfect match? Or will the good girl and rocker bad boy end in the perfect disaster?

For readers who love a good mix of sweet and sizzle, toe-curling kisses, swoony book boyfriends, and a happily ever after.

I live in Utah with my husband, our four kids, our dog who thinks she is human, and a rather suspicious cat. A fantasy anthology which included my work in 2018 hit the USA Today Bestseller's list. I have written several fantasy and romance novels and adore both genres!

You'll most likely find me when I'm not writing trying to keep up with the kids, daydreaming, spending time in the mountains, and drinking too much caffeine.

Our New Song was a nice conclusion to this series. We obviously know each of these couples end up together with before going in to read them but they each have their own story, this series didn't repeat tropes. Rees and Vi were a fun couple to read. Their story was a little different in the fact that we didn't know Rees at all really going into this book. So we kinda got a lot heavier in personal backgrounds here which wasn't a bad thing.

I will say Vi is definitely one of my favorite of the women, I definitely respect her character. Vi stood up for herself and never let her shyness be an exuse to accept mistreatment and always reminded herself of her self-worth.

My favorite thing in this book straight up was Vi choosing to bond with Briar. Call me crazy, I don't care honestly but it's the truth. Emily Childs had the opportunity to bash a character like Briar for being shallow, stuck up or being seemingly a gold digger... but she didn't she used Briar as a different example of someone who was misunderstood or handled society in a different way. I loved that, it was so refreshing for Vi to admit that her initial thoughts of Briar were not only wrong but unfair and Vi took the time to get to know Briar and actually ended binding with her and liking her. That was honestly, honestly my favorite part of the book.

And while sure Vi and Rees were a cute couple and Rees had his personal problems and was cute (he wasnt my favorite rocker in this series), I had a total girl crush on Vi.

If anything read this book for Vi... and Parker because Parker is my favorite and I cannot wait to start his book!!!!!

I really enjoyed this one, once I started I couldn't put it down. Vienna and Rees have a swoony meet cute, filled with sweetness and chemistry that carries throughout the rest of the story. I liked them both and it was fun watching them get to know each other and fall in love. Loved the supporting cast and thought the author did a good job of having past characters in the story in a way that didn't distract from Rees and Vienna's story. Fun series!

Another cute addition to the series 🥰

Rees and Vienna had the cutest elevator meet cute in which they call each other Lizzie and Darcy 😍
Of course, he ruins it by assuming the worst of her but immediately regrets when she proves to want nothing to do with him. He weasles his way into her life via a deal and the rest is a cute love story haha
Vienna sees Rees the way others don't. She sees how hes undervalued by his family and misjudged and I love that no matter what he did to push her away, she knew what she wanted and neither begged or backed down. Vienna never let anyone walk all over her and I loved that about her!
She was a teacher too and I think being a good role model fit well with that. Rees finally figured out his life wouldn't be the same without her and so we get a swoon worthy ending to this epic love story of found family and wholesome lifestyles even when in high paying careers.
The band, their wives/girlfriends, the kids and other side characters all played a part in making this story and I loved how well developed every relationship was. Cant wait to read Noah and Parkers stories 🤩

Good simple but moving romance
I liked the somewhat complex characters: Rees, the bad boy who succeeded but who devalues himself, who doubts everyone because of his notoriety, facing Vienna, the teacher, a nice girl who doesn't dare taking risks, and who has a rather subtle way of turning people around.
Their meeting sets the tone of both their attraction and their restraint, and Rees' strained family background, of which he is the black sheep, adds a challenge to this couple for this tender and romantic story.

I enjoyed Rees and his backstory. I love these books because they are cinnamon roll rock stars, although I’m not necessarily a fan of heavy rock music still like the series a lot.

The story was fun and kept me entertained.

I also love teachers like Vienna. She’s sweet, interesting, in a little bit secretly snarky. I like this one more than the second book.

Only kissing and no cursing.

Our New Song by Emily Childs

I loved this book. This story is probably my favorite out of all the others in this series. WOW!

*SPOILERS!!!*

Rees: the bass player, twin brother, outcast to his family, has asthma (secret), kind of a movie geek.
Vienna: has a fear of elevators, is a teacher, loves reading, doesn't listen to rock music or watch popular shows (obviously).

My favorite part is probably the constant reference to Lizzy and Mr. Darcy (especially in the proposal), how she makes a honey-do-list as the payment for the favor, how she treats his family and stands up for him without putting anyone else down, how cute Rees is in his shyness and protectiveness of his family (brother), and how he treats her.

The story starts with her going to a concert with a friend. She doesn't really know anyone and has never heard any of the songs or who the band members are. So, when she gets scared in an elevator and there is only one other person, she clings to him. They start their little relationship with a distraction and no names (Use Lizzy and Darcy). Then, when he appears, with the band, at her school for a band event, he believes she is following him or something. He confronts her and rudely tells her to stay away. Because of this, she requests to sign an NDA. He doesn't know this and when he finds out he goes to her again and asks her for forgiveness and a favor. He needs a date to his step-brother and ex's wedding (kinda messed up). She agrees and wins everyone over with her personality. Then she notices that the family treats Rees kind of bad and stands up for him. Then he has an asthma attack, freaks out, its resolved. Then she loses her job (not really, cause she quit) and he blames himself and breaks up with her thinking that she'll get her life back if he isn't involved. The last bit of the story is him getting her back by using how they first met, an elevator. THE END!

Oh mylanta did I devour this book and loved every bite! This series is such a hit for me. I love this band and all the ladies that are connected to it. Vienna and Reese were such a fun couple to read and I loved watching them fall in love and see all the characters come together. Loved it!

I LOVED THE ENTIRE SERIES AND I WANT MORE NOW!!!! (Lol, Emily you hear me?!)

"What's the problem? You can ride off into the sunset and have beautiful rock and roll babies."

Each story I read I kept thinking "Oh this couple is my fav!". Every. Single. Time. I just felt so much like Vi - the whole living life as a wallflower and never checking anything off my bucket list. I loved how protective Rees is of his brother! He was such a cinnamon roll! I just adored their back and forth and how feisty Vi got with Rees's family! Once again Emily gives us relatable characters you wanna Netflix and binge with! The banter is laugh out loud funny and you can't help but root for them! I love all the cameos from past friends!

"Alexis puckers her lips. 'The big baby needed Bridger to ice his wittle shoulder last night, and rub his wittle ego, and tell him he did a good job.' Parker covers his head with a pillow, cursing. 'He was mine first, Alexis!"

I mean their found family is what dreams are made of! I want to join!! They completely have each other backs! They love each other enough to let them be themselves but also push them to be better! I love watching it all unfold! Also, the new addition of Vi's parents being polar opposites but both doctors was really cool. And that her dad is deaf. I loved the diversity that Emily's covered with mental health and disabilities in this series! (Although next series I want an Asian character for me!)

"The trouble with some villains is they're sympathetic. Sometimes the farm boy hero has the same broad shoulders and toned hands as the overlord. Or the dark king has tormented eyes, and it leaves the conflicted heroine wondering what lies underneath those angsty layers, and how she might pluck out the soft beating heart. There are a few reasons I've filed the beautiful bassist in his own antihero category. He's shifty. He's unpredictable. Cool, sweet, and delicious in one moment, then cold, collected, and steely in the next."

I mean have I convinced you to read all of Emily's books yet? Totally worth it!! Very well written! Auto buy for me now!!

Our New Song by Emily Childs is the perfect end to one of the best contemporary romance series I’ve ever read. I have thoroughly enjoyed each installment of the For Love and Rock series, and I’m so sad my time with these characters is over. This is definitely a series I will re-read again and again. So, what did I love about Our New Song? Absolutely everything! As with every Childs’s novel, the characters are wonderfully endearing and relatable. As a long-time high school English teacher (wrapping up my 17th year — whoa! 😲), I couldn’t help but love Vienna and her passion for her students and profession. I fully relate to her literary nerdiness and her super introverted tendencies. And I really love her character — she is fiercely loyal to Rees and so down to earth. Vienna is just all-around awesome. And then there is Rees … can you say, “SWOONALICIOUS”?! Rees has the brooding, dark, curmudgeon-y rock star down pat. I love how he immediately feels protective of Vienna. It melts my heart SO much when a man has a strong protective streak. But Child’s characters aren’t the only reason I love this novel. I appreciate so much that Child’s stories are full of emotional depth. She really has a way of zinging the reader’s heart. Our New Song deals with real, relatable character flaws and relationship issues. I’m not going to lie — I shed a tear or two for Vienna and Rees because of the journeys they each traversed in this story. Overall, if I had to boil down to one word about how I feel about Our New Song, that word would be satisfied. My reader's heart is super satisfied with Vienna and Rees’s super excellent story.

Our New Song is a fast-paced, captivating romance that I just did not want to put down. I highly recommend this excellent story. If you need a well-written, satisfying read, definitely purchase a copy of Our New Song today. You won’t be disappointed you did.

I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on March 6, 2022, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This is a really enjoyable rockstar romance with a hero not at all like rockstar heroes usually are. Rees is the bass player and like most bass players he’s quiet and deep. I really liked him and thought he and Vi were a great couple. This is the fourth book in the series and I hadn’t read any of the others. While it can be read without them, and it didn’t make the story less enjoyable, I did find myself often confused over who was who, especially since the band is a huge extended family and very much involved throughout the book. I’m also sure there are a lot of things I missed completely because I hadn’t read the prior books. I’ve considered going back to read them now but because I know how their stories all end I probably won’t. Also, even though I really did enjoy the book, it was too tame for me. On a scale of one to ten for steam, this book is a one. Emily does offer a steamy bonus scene as a free download through a link in the back. It’s still fairly tame, maybe a three at most, but it was nice to see some actual chemistry for once.

Parker Knight, the ball player, has a story coming out in April and I’ll probably read it just to see how he’s finally tamed. I also dearly hope Noah get his love story, too. (There’s no way I can see him ending up Briar. My money is on him and Marti meeting and falling for each other. I think he needs someone fun like her by his side.) I would definitely read a book about Noah.

In reality, I would give this 2.5 stars, but Good Reads only allows me to give whole stars, so I rounded down.

To be honest, I didn’t think this was very good.
Like, it reads halfway between a self-insert Wattpad “not like other girls” fanfiction mixed with a Sarah Dessen innocent teen who gets the bad boy romance. This isn’t to say I don’t love Sarah Dessen books or the occasional fanfiction, but when the author promotes the book as “🥵-level spicy” on tik tok and calls it “toe curling” and “swoon-worthy” on the back of the book, I expected more than a few kisses. This just felt way too juvenile to me, which isn’t what I want in romance novels.

Also, Vienna (I love the name by the way) felt too much like an early 2012’s pick me girl who would’ve won One Direction’s attention in a fanfiction by being too cool to know them. Rees, on the other hand, clearly needs a therapist. I like a morally grey, therapist-needing man when I read fantasy, but when I read “realistic” and self-insert love stories, I don’t want my fictional men to be riddled with baggage.

Overall, this was a quick read, and I was entertained. However, it wasn’t personally my cup of tea and I think it should’ve been advertised differently on tik tok by the author. It was sweet and innocent, but not nearly toe-curling or spicy.

I loved the book but the third act breakup was completely unnecessary and thus felt so forced.

QUOTES

1. “I shrug. ‘I thought you wanted me to pretend to be your girlfriend.’
‘That’ll be too unbelievable when they see you’re too good for me.’” — Chapter 12: Our New Song by Emily Childs

2. “In truth, the trouble with Vienna isn’t that I need to get her out of my system.
I want to keep her in.
But I don’t want to make the mistake of getting into her system.
 For her sake.
The rough, jagged edges hidden inside have no place scraping up a woman like her.” — Chapter 13: Our New Song by Emily Childs

3. “What matters is the way she spun me around in that elevator, and I haven’t stopped spinning since.
‘Vi,’ I whisper. Her name is a plea on my tongue. A plea to stop me before I ruin us. A plea to pull me closer, to want me the same.” — Chapter 18: Our New Song by Emily Childs

4. “When Rees comes out, his hair is damp, his skin red from the water, and he’s wearing glasses.
I give him a look, and his cheeks deepen in color. ‘Impressed yet, Vi? You snagged yourself an asthmatic with glasses who has read Pride and Prejudice.’
‘Twice. For pleasure, not for school purposes,’ Noah adds without looking at his brother. Rees leans his face close to mine.” — Chapter 25: Our New Song by Emily Childs

An upper and a not so much downer, but all the same, terrific!
I just need to say wow! The opening chapter of this story was a real zinger! It definitely caught my attention! But it’s Ms Childs’ way of describing the feelings of her characters that keeps my attention. It is unique in a pleasant way that helps me picture them in all their forms of personality and situations. Slowly, we get a peek into each character and they are all unique. How can one author keep them all straight? But she does. I know when she talks about each one that I could tell who they were without ‘looking’. Even the ‘airheads’ had something deep inside of them and her character, Vienna, has managed to bring out their deep ends with finesse and awe. I love the way she stays loyal to Rees even if he is a little aloof sometimes. He did make a big mistake where his feelings were concerned with Vienna, thinking he was doing her a favor and protecting her, but it still hurt. In the end, I’m glad it all worked out and we were graced with a number of epilogues. All enjoyable and fun. Can’t wait to read about Parker. I preordered it. I am anxiously waiting for Noah’s book also. I highly recommend this story and series. Love it.

This is the only book I’ve read in the For Love and Rock series. When I saw a reel about a stranger in an elevator offering a “romance novel” kiss, I had to drop everything and read it. As a big fan of first-act kisses, I was not disappointed. That scene. Kind of a masterpiece.

A wallflower-type English teacher, Vienna, is coerced by her friends to attend a concert for a rock band she’s never heard of. On her way out, she ends up trapped in an elevator with a shy, tattooed stranger who steps up to help her through a panic attack. After the delicious moment (I’m not giving away the whole scene), they are rescued and walk away without getting names or numbers. In an entertaining turn of events, Rock Star Rees gets an opportunity to ask Vienna for a favor in return—be his date for a weekend wedding.

I loved the sweet chemistry between Vi and Rees. I love that they call each other Lizzy and Darcy. Vi is the real rock star in this story. She always speaks up for and does what is right, even in uncomfortable situations. She fights for herself, for Rees, and for their relationship. Sexy rock star bass player Rees has been playing the bad twin opposite his Golden Boy, TV star brother for so long he believes all the Bad Boy press he’s created for himself. He certainly isn’t good enough for the nice English teacher who is afraid to take risks. But he can’t bring himself to stay away from her. And she doesn’t want him to because she knows he's just a big gooey cinnamon roll. They have a lot to figure out to get to their happily ever after. It’s a beautiful journey.

Protective to a Fault

I love a man who is protective of all the ones he holds dear and Rees is tat guy! Vienna also happens to be just as fiercely loyal and protective. With both of them guarding each other’s hearts minds and body it was bound to come to a clash at some point. I cannot emphasize enough the found family that occurs in this series. It is seriously top notch. Rees, as the newest person to the band, really sees and feels what having true family and friends looks like.

Having the medical representation of asthma as well as ASL being utilized. I truly fell in love more and more with this notion of normalizing these superstars. There’s something about having people with everyday problems that just make them more relatable.

I will absolutely be diving into the Kings series HOWEVER I am in desperate need of the siblings stories, all the children’s stories and literally anyone else I can get from this amazing group of people! Love this series and so sad it is over but now it’s time to dive into Parker’s love story downfall!

This was definitely my favourite book of the series. Not only did I love the characters together and getting to know the mystery of Rees, but I also loved how the author showed depth the characters. One complaint I made about the previous books was how the author didn’t use some of the storylines properly (ex. Tate’s anxiety and Bridger’s addiction) because she would mention them without actually showing their struggles. So the author showing the readers Rees’s asthma attack and his family dynamic made the book a lot more enjoyable and had me more emotionally invested.

While I did really enjoy this book, it made me a little upset that it took until the last book of the series for me to become emotionally invested in the characters. Maybe the author’s writing is getting better the more books she writes, and if that is the case then I am really looking forward to reading the Vegas Kings series about Parker and his friends.

Rees' dark heart

Rees has been hurt badly by his family and past love so he opens up to no one but his twin, Noah. That is until he meets a woman in the back elevator after their concert. He avoids people and crowds always but tonight he shares the elevator with a woman who panics when it stops mid ride! He helps her through it and they become Mr Darcy and Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice to each other! When they meet again, the attraction is still there but he fights it until he needs a date for his step brother's wedding weekend. He has a contract written to cover them but they realize they are having real feelings! This rollercoaster ride has many bumps but they enjoy it in spite of his family's obvious dislike of him. When he has a serious asthma attack and Vi, with the help of his stepbrother, save him, life changes. Will they survive the storms? Read it and enjoy! They don't disappoint!

🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁 5/5

This book features Rees and Vienna. They are complete opposites. However, on the inside, they are really similar. They are an awesome couple and just make me smile.

Rees and Vienna are awesome characters in their own way. Rees struggles with his family respecting his career, and this is completely relatable. The way he handles his conflicts are completely mature. Also, he is a nice person and the tattoos are a way to express himself. Vienna, on the other hand, hates attention. She is a good girl, but she isn’t boring. She is a great friend. I love that she embraces her nerdy side, but isn’t stupid.

The romance was just sweet. I loved the meet cute. The kissing scenes were amazing. I loved the scenes between the two main characters. They had so much chemistry. The sizzle was there and it didn’t fail to disappoint.

This is the fourth book in this amazing series and is Rees and Vienna’s journey. Vienna is a schoolteacher who does not take any risks, and stays within her comfort zone, while Rees is a quiet and broody bassist for a rock band. When these two are stuck together in an elevator, they do not share any names, but when the band arrives at the school assembly, Vienna instantly recognizes Rees. This is a well written story which is sweet, endearing, and with tension, undeniable chemistry, emotions, romance, and love, which leads to an entertaining and all-consuming page turner I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I recommend.

I loved this
Vienna is a teacher who got invited to a rock concert. The highlight of the evening is getting stuck in the elevator with a tattooed hot guy who can calm her panic attack. It turns out Rees is in the band and he has a few secrets. His family thinks he's the black sheep but he is trying to take care of everyone.

There was just something about the characters that I loved. The band is a wonderful supportive group. The editing is perfect and I liked the language in this story. The steam level is kissing.

Vivien is a quiet English teacher who doesn't go to rock concerts and likes to blend into the background . Her coworkers convince her to go to one for Perfectly Broken and she gets stuck in an elevator with one of the band members but doesn't realize that. They share a kiss and then part all with out knowing names or details. Rees and his band are at her school to shoot a video and they run into each other again. Can they get past her shyness and lack of self confidence to have their HEA? Enjoyed this novel and as always, this author.

Vi (Vienna) is a teacher, and she doesn't take risks, she also doesn't normally go to see a band like 'Perfectly Broken', who play hard rock music. Luckily her friends drag her there, and she meets Rees. I loved the seemly bad boy Rees, he hides so much about him, but undervalues himself. Vi is great (loved her too), she naturally seems to charm those around her and I loved the connection between these two. I loved the humour, romance and the kinship of this band and it's extended family/friends. I look forward to reading Parker's story.

Great ending to the series

Ugh Emily Childs did it again! I didn’t care for Rees story when he was introduced in the last book. But because it was Emily Childs I had to read it. And I’m so glad I did. As with all her books and this series especially it was wonderful. It was great to see the characters from the previous book. And it was even better to get to learn about Rees and his story. It was nothing like I was expecting but more than one can expect. And I loved Vi someone who is an introvert but man is she protective of those she loved. Their story is worth reading. And the two epilogues were icing on the cake.

Does it have to be over?

I know I get to see Parker and glimpses of the gang in the baseball series, but I’m really going to miss this chosen family. This series was my introduction to Emily Child’s. I have to say I really love her writing. She writes characters so lifelike and their dialog is spot on what you would expect. I definitely loved this group of “married nuns”. It was so enjoyable to see family oriented people throughout these books. I loved that Pops was the type of boss that cares so deeply for his “family”. I loved how clean most of the people lived. I just really enjoyed it all.

Love Rees and Vienna's story. It pulls a lot together, and I'd almost say it was too much by the last epilogue, but the meet up is crazy good. I was getting pretty frustrated with Rees along the way, with his hot/cold switchups. But Vienna is a great match for him, and a super perfect fit for the Perfectly Broken family.

The big bad is a nasty piece of work, but Pops has another great moment. All our "wives" step up, like they always do. And the guys have each other's backs. I'm of the opinion that Quinn needs his own book too, but not holding my breath. I love what Emily Childs did with these characters.

And I'm ready to take on the Vegas Kings series now.

Love this book
I can see some improvements in the pacing and writing compared to her earlier works.

Read if you want:
- familial bonds
- rockstar x wallflower-teacher
- brotherly love and dynamics
- strong friendship themes
- the courage to stand in a storm and chase after what you want
- told from 2 POVs - ML and FL

The book is such a sweet read.

Now I’m off to read the Vegas King series, whoo.

Ps: each book has an additional epilogue found on her website plus a steamy scene if the interest is there

Love it

Greatly story and not over the top in misery. I like how deafness and breathing issues are addressed. I loved this band and I'm glad you didn't break them up or retired them, after all my generation is still going strong even in their 70s . Rees's story is fun and interesting as to how they meet and their relationship developed. I like that Vienna was an advocate to Rees's family and public.

I’m loving this series and this is my absolute favourite genre rockstars, bands etc and this is Vienna’s and Rees’s story. It was wonderful how these two strangers meet in an elevator where Vienna has a panic attack and Rees kisses her then he leaves without giving his name but Rees has a lot more planned for Vienna. I loved this wonderful, entertaining story and I definitely recommend this book.
