Growing up in the caverns underneath the colosseum is anything but ordinary for a Roman teenager like Noemi. Helping her father train wild beasts for the emperor’s extravagant shows and being feted with romantic gifts from her noble fiancé, hers is a life few girls could imagine. But despite her good fortune, Noemi is beginning to doubt her upcoming wedding, which could threaten what she desires most—to train as a gladiator. While Noemi loves the lions beneath the colosseum and the bloody shows above, her sister, Livia, is a contrast in extremes. If Livia can’t be an enviable Vestal Virgin in a garden temple, she’ll do the next best thing and use her charms to climb the social ladder, as high as the emperor’s palace on Palatine Hill. While Livia will stop at nothing to improve her social life, Noemi can’t stop her secret desires, nor her stealth training with swords. And then there’s Cato, a top-ranked gladiator who is keeping a risky secret of his own. Against Noemi’s better judgement, she finds herself drawn to this mysterious fighter, who has both a temper and an imperious reputation. Soon, Noemi, Livia and Cato find that keeping secrets is not just child’s play, but dangerous games with deadly consequences. Can they all fool the emperor long enough to avoid a date with the executioner?
Okay so first of all, I felt smart while reading this. My Latin knowledge made me feel powerful since I didn’t have to look at the glossary in the back but already knew the locations. This book is very realistic for the time it is supposed to play in.
Cato was amazing. The fighting scenes were it wresting and got me cheering for him. The was a lot of detail. Everything from the animals to how the gladiators fought in the colosseum was very interesting. It was written in third person and I think my favorite part was that we had a third pov of Livia to understand more of the story line.
I loved the ending. The plottwist made sense and Livia became even more my favorite character.
The romance was also very sweet. Cato and Noemi had a lot of chemistry and I think their romance started at the right time during the book.
I am convinced that those giving a high rating only did so because they received an ARC and felt obligated to do so. The writing was horrible with insane grammar mistakes, the plot felt rushed and empty, the romance felt forced, and the ending felt lazy. It’s like I was reading a draft version of the book and the rest would be improved later. The only way I managed to finish this was knowing that I had gotten it for free on Stuff your Kindle Day and could make notes complaining about how bad it was. Wish I knew how to upload my notes here.
Prepare to be pleasantly surprised by this book. As someone who loves historical periods, especially anything related to ancient Rome, I eagerly picked up this book and it turned out to be a wonderful discovery.
The book cover itself is absolutely beautiful. The colors, design, and font choice all caught my eye. But what truly makes this book special is the story it tells. It switches between different characters' perspectives, adding layers to the plot and making the characters truly interesting.
One of the great things about this book is how well it captures the time period it's set in. It feels authentic and transports you back in time. But it's not just about history. It beautifully blends in a heartwarming romance that shows up at just the right moment. Once you've gotten to know the story and characters, it takes a clever twist that adds more depth and keeps you intrigued..
The characters Cato and Noemi are absolutely adorable, and I loved their relationship. For me, what mattered most was the message of accepting oneself. My favorite character, though, was Livia. Even though there were moments when I wanted to shout at her, her strength and growth throughout the book were amazing to witness.
The events in the book build up perfectly to the ending, which includes a surprising twist that works really well. The story is engaging and keeps a good pace. If you're a fan of historical fiction, you'll definitely love this book.
Overall, it’s a delightful read that took me on an unexpected journey. It has a captivating story, interesting characters, and a perfect blend of history and romance. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an enjoyable and immersive reading experience.
Thank you to Katherine for asking me to read this in advance .. I am very lucky, this book is incredible! I’m a fan of historical fiction and romance and what ever other genres this book has, it honestly has a bit of everything. Ancient Rome Colosseum is the setting and the details shared are amazing, I learnt so much reading this book. There are some graphic gruesome scenes that I’d like to remove from the images I have … but that’s just one reason why I love this book, you can really see and imagine every detail! It’s Ancient Rome so you can only imagine what the emperor had his people doing! Three characters POVs are the chapters throughout the book, two sisters and a gladiator … ohhh Cato I’m in love 😍 All three have their own life threatening secrets, but can they survive them?
An amazing insight into what could’ve happened beneath the sand of the Colosseum.
After the epilogue (yes it has an epilogue, love books with these) Katherine shares a few more bits of information which is a perfect finale. I share with Katherine a joy for reading alll the extra little bits if they are available, it makes a book you loved last that little bit longer. I really didn’t want this one to end, highly recommend, will be out on the 16th November, so do give this debut novel a read. An amazing first book Katherine, I can’t wait to read more from you.
This is one of those times when I love the fact that I enjoy reading a variety of books. I haven't read much of the Roman times but what I have, I enjoyed. This one is no different.
It is a very interesting and well-written look into the "games" the emperor suffered onto his people during their executions. It still baffles me how the citizens of Rome could sit through these "events" as if it were sport and worthy of spectatorship.
Alongside the executions, we follow Noemi (animal handler for the animals used in the arena) and Cato (up and coming Gladiator). Their love is forbidden but that doesn't stop them from pursuing happiness with each other and braving the possibility of being caught and sentenced to death.
Livia, Noemi's sister, is also a focal point throughout the story and at the very end she redeemed herself in my eyes and I ended up loving her.
I did feel the ending was a tad rushed but I'm sure it was just me as this was also predictable for me. I knew very early on where this was all headed, but that did not take away from my enjoyment overall. This is a solid debut and one I would definitely recommend for fans of historical fiction.
I sincerely appreciate the publisher for providing me with a review copy. All opinions expressed herein are mine and mine alone.
Rome is a place filled with history. But this is the first time I come around a strong, empowered female protagonist converted to the coliseum. I’m not saying that is the only book with strong females in Rome, but I haven’t found them yet. The story has a multiple POV narration that follows the life of two sisters na da gladiator. Each with their unique problems, perspectives, goals and interest. It is amazing and fun to see how they end up mixing their stories. The plot is fun and gets you from the very beginning. The twist and secrets hidden among them makes every page worth it. The context and landmarks in which they live only adds to the story. The mixture of politics in their lives and how norms can control a live is super interesting to see. Of course there’s also romance for those more inclined to that. And I have to say that its a lovely story too. Every exiting twist and reveal gets you on the edge and desperate to know what comes next. A great fun read for romance and historical fiction fans everywhere!
Book Review Beneath the Sand by Katherine Bichler ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5
I absolutely loved everything about this book....from cover to content it was Top notch!
The blurb: Growing up in the caverns underneath the colosseum is anything but ordinary for a Roman teenager like Noemi. But Noemi is beginning to doubt her upcoming wedding, which could threaten what she desires most—to train as a gladiator.
I've never come across a novel set in the heyday of the Colosseum before and this sensational story thrusts you into the heart of the Hypogeum, the substructure of the Colosseum. Apparently the author was inspired to write the book after hearing about the Hypogeum on a tour of the Colosseum. The book gives great intricate details of the times which were so fascinating yet I liked that it wasn't too highbrow. The chapters bounce between POV of the three main characters Naomi, her sister Livia and Gladiator in training Cato, wonderful storylines kept me eagerly engaged and I was gripped from beginning to end .
Just last month @ #puydefou I got to experience the Colosseum Reenactment (swipe for pics) so I was totally in the zone for this book. I was also blessed to visit the actual Colosseum myself back in 2017... It truely is breathtaking
Kudos to @katherinebichler On such a unique idea for a book.
Thank you so much to the author for an ARC of this book
This book was EVERYTHING and actually one of my favorite reads this year!
You get a strong female lead (Noemi) and a dream boat gladiator (Cato) to fall in love with. You also get Livia who is Noemi's sister and you get to follow her story dealing with the emperor.
I love reading about the Roman era. This was basically a fictional behind the scenes look of gladiator battles, executions, and the life of an emperor. I also love animals and Noemi was an animal trainer with her dad. They would use said animals in the executions.
There were times it seemed a little slow but that doesn't even matter to me because the writing was just so good! And don't get me wrong -- there were definitely some intense moments that kept you on the edge of your seat too! I didn't think the book was going to end the way it did and I'm VERY happy about that! Lol. The ending was perfection. ❤️
I highly recommend this one! There was never a time I wanted to stop reading and when I wasn't reading it, I couldn't stop thinking about it!
I was incredibly lucky to be given and ARC and all opinions are mine and mine alone.
Great storyline with a satisfying twisty ending. I’m a sucker for books set in ancient Egypt, Greece, and especially Rome. The main characters were well developed and mostly likable. The editing could have been better. Hopefully the author writes another ancient historical fiction soon!
I got this book free through stuff your kindle day, although it is available with Kindle Unlimited. As someone who extensively studied Rome in college, I was really looking forward to this book. However, this is one of the worst books I have read this year. It felt like half a book. The author spent so long trying to sell the setting that the story basically was remiss of plot and characterization which left almost no substance to the book. The romance was laughable. The characters did not act in any way that seemed realistic, and there was no reason these two characters should like each other. They saw one another practically twice before they kissed. No characterization beyond 'there was something about her' type mentality. The author actually started the book with "why does it bother you so much that I am not like every other girl in Rome" (page 9). Can you be more cliche? The plotline was barely a thread throughout the book. The ending felt thrown together and there were revelations without any set up.
Lots of editing mistakes Ending was rushed - the emperor died because the writer got bored of writing or something? Random plot to kill Jovian that was never fully explored? E.g. why were they trying to kill him? Did he find out who saved him? (and if so why was that scene not included??? That could have been a really special moment)
Were we supposed to support Cato and Noemi’s relationship? Cheat on your fiancé who treats you like an absolute princess for what reason? I wanted some justice for Felix and all he got was executed? I fully supported his revenge…
Don’t even get me started on Livia.
I’m not an expert on Romans, but did they really originate the word “quid” in terms of money?

A fun historical fiction novel set in Ancient Rome. There are exotic animals, gladiators, intense fight scenes, historical locations, Saturnalia, romance, a twist or two, and a satisfying ending. I picked this book up on a whim. I was initially attracted to the the cover artwork and the idea of ancient Rome featuring the animals of the colosseum. I was even more intrigued when I read that the author and cover artist are both from my hometown Buffalo, NY! This was a fun read and I would definitely read more historical fiction by the author…. ancient Egypt, Vikings, pirates?! ;)
Noemi, Cato and Livia slayed 💅🏻 (metaphorically and literally)
I got this book two weeks ago when amazon had its “stuff your kindle day” and i didn’t think much of it (as i had downloaded 60+ books) apart from its enchanting cover and name until today when I decided to give it a go. Who would’ve thought it would become one of my favourite books of all time.
The premise, the characters, the writing, THE IMAGERY! All of it was otherworldly, I genuinely felt like i was inside the colosseum during the roman empire. (It also helped that I’ve see quote a few Roman ruins like the nîmes amphitheatre which it’s extremely well preserved so its like a smaller colosseum with its whole arena and most of its stars/sitting area)
I honestly loved all the details about the gladiators, the animals, the training, the messed up emperor, the lack of options and autonomy the women had and the slowly brewed romance. Even the (not gory) deaths of animals and executions of prisoners were interesting to read.
And don’t let me talk about how good the arena fights scenes were. That very first one as well the last were so immaculate i swear i felt like i was watching a very high budget film.
The who third person writing with three POV’s alternating was so interesting and added so much to the story. I just loved getting a glimpse of their lives and well as how different they were but somehow all of their thoughts and actions intertwined. Noemi was obviously my favourite favourite but only by like 10 or 20 points since Cato and Livia were also such great characters with complex stories and just so baddass.
I mentioned it before but the romance was also soo cute asf, i lived that we only got it every once in a while and it was always very tender and not explicit at all. It being slow burn was just so great, it definitely gave me the same vibes as to when i get to see the kdrama characters finally hold hands on episode 12 (out of 16).
Okay i will stop now before i make this review ten pages long but just wanted to say that if you are reading this review go read this book, its fast paced, incredibly interesting and since it has less than 300 pages you don’t get any unnecessary filler stuff, just great stuff, and yes the ending is tad short and i wanted a little bit more of an epilogue but thats not enough to get rid of my love for this.
It was my first time reading a book that takes place in Rome, which was a unique one for me!
In this book, there are three perspectives that mainly focus on Noemi, Livia, and Cato. However, this is not just any ordinary romance story. Noemi and Livia are sisters who grew up in the colosseum with a father that trains wild beasts to put on shows for entertaining the emperor. Little did they know, their lives would make a dramatic change. Although Noemi has a fiancé, she is drawn to this mysterious gladiator, Cato. Cato, on the other hand, has a secret. As for Livia, she gets herself involved in a unexpected situation. Each begin their own fate towards a path that gives this book a twist.
Overall, this was a quick and fun read! I recommend those who loves books with forbidden love like this one!
3.5/5 From the very first page I was pulled in with the first colosseum execution. I was enthralled with all the details about Ancient Rome and loved Noemi’s story. She is such a strong female character and I liked how she worked with the animals. I wasn’t a fan of her sister, but once I got to the final chapters I realized why her point of view was needed. I couldn’t have predicted the twist at the end! Although, I did think the ending was wrapped up rather quickly. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would definitely read others by Bichler!
Noemi and her family grew up in the caverns under the colosseum in Rome. Her father works for the emperor by training wild beasts for extravagant shows and executions and Noemi loves to help her father with his work. Her sis Livia is the complete opposite of Noemi as she does not like to help her father with his work but would rather be chosen as a Vestal Virgin in the garden temple. However, Liv wasn’t chosen so instead she begins to use her charms to climb the social ladder to become one of the emperor’s ladies. Cato is a top gladiator who comes from a family of gladiators and has a secret of his own. This book follows all three characters as they are trying to keep their own secrets Fromm getting out and not be executed by the emperor. * * Okay, let me start by saying that this is not the typical book that I would read but I am soooo glad that Katherine Bichler reached out to me wanting to send me an ARC copy of this book. I absolutely loved this book and I could not put it down. She did such a wonderful job describing the time period and the story within the time period. I could not get enough of this book and it was so difficult for me to put it down at times. She did an absolutely wonderful job with character development and I became so invested in the characters. There are some gruesome scenes so definitely look into TW before reading the book. Overall, this was an excellent debut novel for her and I cannot wait to see what she writes in the future!
This was so refreshing and different from the books i normally read. Everything takes place in ancient rome and way they described the space in the story is so well detailed that you feel part of the book. I loved Noemi and Cato’s relationship, they had so much chemistry and tension. The change of points of view between the three main characters (Noemi, Cato and Livia) makes the story even more interesting (expect the unexpected!) and makes you understand more of what’s happening and their twisted secrets.
Thanks to the author for giving me an ARC of her book!
What a phenomenal read. I’m not a big fiction reader but after reading this book and giving it to my family, they all agree as well that this is fiction worth reading! A story that will hook you early and will make you not want to stop reading! Great job, Katherine!
Thank you so much for the ARC @katherinebirchler in exchange for an honest review.
I LOVED this book! I loved the different perspective of the Roman colosseum by telling the story of what happens underneath the sand. I really enjoyed how the beginning of the book and the end all tied together and the prologue alone captures your attention right away. The writing details in the book were so vivid too that I could picture it as if I was watching the games. Overall I loved this book and thought it was such a great spin to the classic gladiator tales we always hear.
Despite not being a typical read for me, I throughly enjoyed this story. The world building and story telling was fantastic. A ruthless emperor enjoyed violence - his executions and gladiator entertainment were brutal. But this book was told from the other side of this life. It showed the underground life and all those working for the emperor. Noemi and Livia were the daughters of a man who trained all the animals that were involved in gladiator matches and prisoner executions. Cato was a man training to become a gladiator. They all had secrets. This books shows how their lives become intertwined and how their secrets get revealed. There is forbidden romance and betrayal amongst the brutality dealt out by the emperor.
Overall, this book felt light on the romance per my taste, but I didn’t seem to mind much with all that was going on. This is perfect for those who enjoyed Fable and The First Girl Child. - although this book is not deemed a fantasy, it still has that overall feel in my opinion. You will get a unique and fantastic story. It’s an amazing debut from this new author.
This is a well-told, entertaining story that takes place during the Roman Empire. The Colosseum, which was built by Jewish slaves in 82 A.D. is the setting. It was a time when the brutal Emperor ruled over the land and the people. It was a time when animals were killed and gladiators fought to their deaths. The story follows three main characters: Noemi, a young girl who grows up in the hypogeum (the underground caverns below the amphitheater) and trains the animals who are killed during the ostentatious events in the arena of death: Livia, who is Noemi's sister and is trying to climb the social ladder; and Cato, a gladiator with a secret. These are the three POV, and the characters are well developed. I was especially taken with Noemi's strong personality. She was definitely a force to be reckoned with and I liked that about her. She had a beating heart, and she truly cared about the animals, even knowing they would suffer injuries and death, all in the name of their destiny. This was also a love story, well played out. Suspense is the thread that weaves itself into the story line as each character faces their own struggles and challenges. This is the force that propels the story to its finale. However, I never predicted the stunning twist that came at the end of this book!
Multi POV Gladiators Forbidden love Ancient Rome Strong FMC Secret History
The cover of this book is gorgeous. I truly love it. The color choices, the dual image in the cutout, the coliseum inside the cutout. It’s really a stunning cover!
I’m not really loving the roll out of the sequence of events. It feels like a zigzag rather than a straight line for this plot.
The ancient time period and modern dialogue were such a juxtaposition that I wanted to DNF at 51%, not finding the conflict entertaining to read about or the characters well written or engaging. The steaks needed to be higher between the main characters. Maybe all of the historical explanations took away from the urgency of the conflicts?
The research and imagination of the author is evident in how thoroughly the coliseum and Ancient Roman entertainment is described. But I found some of the use of latin or tongue in cheek/modern play on words to be juvenile and distracting.
I pushed through solely because I don’t DNF books. The ending was predictable and quickly wrapped up.
Dominarum et iudices (ladies and gentlemen), I present to you an incredible trip to Ancient Rome with this fantastic book. This well-written debut novel will make you feel like a spectator among the public watching the prisoner executions and the gladiators fight in the Colosseum and get a unique peek behind and underneath the scenes of the Hypogeum. In the three alternating chapters of the two sisters Naomi and Livia and the gladiator in training Cato, you will be intrigued with their lives, hopes, and dreams. But also with their secrets. And they all have secrets. This story is an absolute must-read for history lovers. But be aware life under the Roman emperor was cruel, so please keep that in mind as there are such parts to read in this story. (also with animals) Katherine L. Bichler @katherinebichler, thank you so much for a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked this story, it was beautifully told and I cared about the characters and their world. I really loved the behind the scenes aspect, it was new, imaginative and very unique. Despite my true appreciation it did loose points for me because I feel like I was torn between a YA and an adult novel. Without the graphic violent moments, and some animal bits ..I would preach it to my friends kids. Actually I would push it into school curriculum if I could. I found the adult content minimal, the characters journey and any romance storyline did feel YA to me… not a bad thing I love my YA. Overall it was beautifully written and I would definitely read more from this author. Btw..I think young readers would go silly over this if you ever felt like releasing a YA edition <3
One star because someone wrote a book and I refuse to not rate a first book attempt. As a historical fiction fan, this was NOT a good book. I almost didn’t finish multiple times. It was set in Ancient Rome with some VERY modern dialogue (bartender, pal and dates just to name a few) and Greek myth names instead of Roman counterparts (honestly I would have let it slide had it been consistently the Greek name, but to use Greek and then switch to Roman later in the book was too big an ask). Also, how the heck did they have poinsettias when they weren’t documented in Europe until the 1800’s? Yes, I did my own research after reading, because historical accuracy is important.
I really enjoyed the setting of this novel and how much thought and time was put into describing the customs and geographical locations the writer has included. Would definitely be interested in reading more books set in this era. The characters where interesting and it came across as though a lot of work was put into who they where as individuals. However, there was mistakes in the writing and it did lack a sense of maturity. Also, it felt like the first 30% of the book was dragging and then had to find a rushed solution at the end. Also, it did play with dual time lines but lacked a sense of clarity.
