YpeM-I is a metaphorical treatise on scientific malfeasance in which Evil and Good meet on the plane of humanity and await instructions from the Creator - annihilation or survival? Synopsis: August 28, 2012 - A blistering hot day in Val Verde County sets the stage for a devious experiment that goes horribly right, as planned. The west Texas county is one of many along the US-Mexico border selected for the first dispersal of immigrants infected with a lethal strain of Yersinia pestis. Unlike its ancestor, that caused the Black Death and killed ≈200 million people in the 14th century, this strain is different. A former Soviet bioweapons mastermind used gain-of-function to make it more lethal than its predecessor. This is the first attack. A new-life-form is about to be unleashed on the world.
Because of an altruistic act by his mother, Ernesto Jude Cortez becomes a United States citizen. After attending Midwestern State University, he obtains a MD-PhD degree from a Texas medical school. At a WHO workshop in Geneva, Ernie meets an equally gifted Spanish scientist, Dr. Eleora Suárez. The two collaborate in a technically advanced search for novel treatments of infectious diseases using quorum sensing and DNA encryption. Unintentionally, they become entwined in a deadly conflict with the Soviet bioweapons mastermind. In a twisting plot that plays out globally, a mysterious ally takes an interest. The ally’s ancient legion joins forces with Ernie and his friends. The terrorists’ goal, to cause a worldwide pandemic, will succeed if not stopped by Dr. Cortez and his cohort of associates and secret allies.

More than just a pandemic story. The characters are so interesting. You wonder what other adventures they will have. The secret organization was very imaginative. Love the historical stories of the Roman era. Very technical but explained so easy to understand.
