Sam Quinton #3

Double Frame

Rate this book
Sociology professor Felix Thayer is brilliant but hateful. A near genius in his field, but impossible to get along with. When his colleague Michael Hartness is found murdered in his office, it doesn't surprise anyone that Thayer is arrested for the crime. Everyone who knew the two men pretty much saw that coming. But why would Thayer have committed the murder in a manner so careless as to almost ensure his being fingered as the culprit? It's almost as if the guy wanted to be caught.

That's what Thayer's wife needs to know. She doesn't really care whether her husband's guilty. She just has to know why he'd be so careless and hires Sam Quinton, full-time gym owner, part-time private eye, and former professional wrestler, to find out. But as Quinton investigates the crime, he finds there may be more to the affair than the animosity of two men. And when the local Mafia begins dogging his steps, he figures he's on the trail of something that someone wants kept under wraps.

Having spent my career working in higher education, I know this professor type and they are horrible to work around. While I’ve never worked for a professor, I have certainly worked on a lot of projects with faculty over the years thus being exposed to this personality type. Having said that, I know far more professors who are caring, humble, and student centered in their approach to the work we do to retain students. BUT I’ve digressed.

Double Frame is the third book in this series and the first one I’ve read. The book is well written with an eclectic cast of characters that really make this book. This book worked well as a standalone. I didn’t feel like I missed anything by not having read the first two books.
The setting is described so well, I felt like I was a part of the story as I read along. The writing style is easy to follow, and the pacing is spot on. Full of plot twists and turns you won’t see coming, this book is hard to put down. When I was done, I didn’t want it to end.

Overall, I recommend this book and I will be circling back to books 1 and 2 while awaiting the next installment in this series. I look forward to seeing how our maim character grows and develops.

New bit players, new bad guys, and completely different storylines make this quick and easy read a pleasure to lose oneself in. Chuckle, ponder and reflect on the parallels to our reality, while immersing yourself in a genuine mystery.

The story is fast-paced and exciting as Quinton sorts through the clues. You are right along with him on the case, second guessing, making connections and more.

It's a great story and very well written. I loved the flow and definitely look forward to more Mysteries in this series.

This was a great escape into a mystery that really kept me thinking and trying to figure it out. I thought I had it a time or two and was wrong. Always love being kept on my toes.

I loved the way Kevin R. Doyle kept the pacing up but then would slow down just enough for us to catch a breath.

Witty and smart, this was a solid read with great writing.

I feel bad dissing on this book that only has 3 reviews but it is what it is. I dnf'd this after about 15% of the way through. The writing is just too amateurish, the characters are too cringe, the speech too syrupy. You know what I mean, the quips are too smart alecky and unrealistic, everyone is just too right. Feels fake and made up. Sorry.
