This has been a fantastic series. Each is a historical read set in the 1900’s and each book is simply enthralling. Set in a simpler yet also harder time this latest book belongs to Mary and Jamie and I found myself drawn in and just loving their journey. Tough decisions to be made, family to consider, it’s a story about dreams, being brave, having a little faith and making them come true.
I enjoyed this series a lot. Each book is a standalone, I suppose, but it's about 3 siblings in a family so I consider it a series. This is the final book about the youngest sibling, Mary. It's a historical fiction series set in the early 1900's in Shaniko, Oregon. Times were simpler then but harder too. Communication was more difficult; transportation was harder and everyday life was harder. Mary and Jamie have been pen pals for years. They never thought they'd meet each other until Jamie, who is a journalist, receives an assignment in the Shaniko area, comes to meet Mary. Since they have written for so many years, it's only natural that they have pretty much fallen in love. But the challenges have just begun for them! Jamie has to make a difficult career choice, Mary goes through a hard family experience, things look bleak for the pair! Will they be able to follow their dreams? Family members from previous book are prominent in this story. I loved the flow of the book and the many emotions that the characters went through. I enjoyed the writing very much.
Hard-----yet simple 1st book I've read in the series - not sure if I'd understand more of the characters (like Lils, Alexander,) etc. or not if I had read the others. I really enjoyed getting to know Mary, Sylvie, Aunt Tilly, and of course Jamie. I like when they read from each other's letters to give a better idea of their leading up to meeting in person. I also liked how their relationship grew, just like in real life - a few bumps in the road. As for Whit....WOW, with a little laughter.
I enjoyed this series and it was nice to see Mary growing up and finding her true love. Aunt Tilly is a delightful character who helps to keep the Hartley siblings grounded. This is a sweet romance and it can be read as a standalone but I think it works best as part of the series.
This is a wonderful story. The story shows how progress is good but sometimes hurts people. Jamie and Mary have been penpals for years through a school project. Jamie gets to travel due to his job and goes through Shanika. He decides to meet Mary. They have have some choices to make. Can they make the right good choices? Can they follow their dream?
