This is going to be the most complicated, confusing review I’ve ever done….I apologize.

His Wildflower was…good? I’m seriously SO confused with my feelings. I was so hyper-aware of the various issues I had while reading this, BUT that didn’t deter me from finishing it. Typically, if I’m having issues with a book, it would be enough to make me quit. Instead, I was obsessed with getting back to it each time I put it down?

I think where I stand is that this book need more work, but it was still compelling. I don’t say that to offend the author or what they’ve created because the author is an absolute sweetheart and I would still recommend this book to my fellow m/m loving babes. I just think with a few more drafts this could have reached its full potential and been absolutely EPIC. There was a lot of sections where I didn’t like with how the characters were written. Even more so when the smut kicked in:

“Dropping his pants to his ankles, Marcus’s stiff manhood flopped heavily against Ares. What an impressive weapon!”

I think I wanted to bleach my eyes when I read that scene. Male genitalia should never be referred to as a weapon or a sausage (which it was in this book at one point) or any of those things IMO because…the way I was taken out of the story each time that happened…oof. And those were some of the moments I was excited for the most. I know it’s hard to choose a word that doesn’t make you cringe, but l oh boy did I struggle with the choices that were made.

I think I also struggled because as a weeb and seeing stuff like “club isekai” and little details like that; knowing what it meant kinda took me out of the story as well. I have a hard time accepting popular media in novels and that’s definitely a me problem, not the authors.

Besides that, the author also uses a lot of “ugh”, “argh”, and plenty of !!!!!!! in the dialogue which made me feel like people were screaming constantly, and I didn’t really like that either.

Besides the grammatical issues and unattractive word choices, I truly do think this story has a lot of potential.

The romance between Ares and Marcus was very intriguing. I think that was the most flushed out to me, and for a rougher version like this, I definitely still think it was very good. Definitely enough to keep me coming back.

The plot was good, once again I think with a little more work this could have been so damn epic. I did enjoy how there wasn’t much filler. There was something happening on every page that kept you focused and immersed. You barley had time to breath (in a good way lol). The world building needed a bit more work. It was one of those worlds where were were treated as if we already knew the world even though we didn’t know anything going into the story. And I think for such a futuristic world I wanted a bit more detail from it and a bit more understanding of how it worked.

I’m wondering if there will be more with how it ended?? Because if so, despite the issues I had, I definitely see myself continuing with the series. All in all it is a compelling story and I think that’s what’s really important. The author managed to keep me engaged and interested which is good enough for me 🖤🖤.

This was a very unique read for sure.

I was drawn in by the cryptic blurb and actually found my self immersed in the plot pretty soon

I loved the setting of this story. It's more dystopian with very minimal romance.

The characters were interesting for sure and the plot was super compelling.

Definitely recommend this as I love the author's writing style!

Looking forward to reading more from this author

I normally don’t read this type story but the blurb just drew me in. This is interesting how the author defined the world as the characters were living the story. Bringing out their differences in their personalities and outlooks held my attention. The chemistry between them was so strong. I think the story flow worked great and the build up was well written. There are a number of twists that I didn’t see coming which made the story more interesting. This might have persuaded me to look at more like this.

Trigger warnings: this book has no trigger warnings, which I believe it should have, but it contains graphic sexual assault (not between the main characters) and graphic violence including the killing of an animal

First things first, can we talk about this cover? Because damn, this is one of the best book cover I have seen in a while, I just adore it.

Also a dystopian, cyberpunk enemies to lovers book sounds like everything I never know I needed in my life and thats why I was attracted to this book.

Brief summary
Marcus wakes up on Aisin, a place that isn’t where he lives, he has been taken as one of their prisoners and he is made to live like them. There he meets Ares and they both cannot stand each other. But the more they get to know each other, the more they realize that they are made for each other after all.

First, I had a hard time getting into the book, there is a lot of details and worldbuilding and my brain just could not keep up with all of them, which made it hard for me to get into the book. But once I caught up on things and started the world works, I really enjoyed the world building. I liked how nicely built the world was and how everything had a purpose and a way to be. The worldbuilding was absolutely lovely to me and a big part of what made the book work for me. I like how much care into building a world for this story, it really showed in every details of the story.

Second, I really enjoyed the pacing of this book. There was always something happening to bring the plot along and it made for a really fun reading experience as I just trying to guess what would happen next, and I really enjoyed that. It also made the book a joy to read because I just wanted to know what would happen next.

Third, I really enjoyed how the enemies to lovers was done in this one. I loved how it was easy to see how much they didn’t like each other at the start of the book but grew more into each other as the book progressed. I liked how it took a while for them to like each other but not too long either, the enemies to lovers progression felt realistic to me and I really enjoyed it.

Fourth, I just want to talk about the author’s writing style for a minute because I just loved it so much. I love the really pretty writing styles with a lot of details and thats exactly the case of this author’s writing style and I just loved it so much.

Fifth, I wish that we got to see the main characters spend more time together because I felt like so much time was spent on developing the world and the plot of the book that we didn’t get to see enough of the romance developing. I could feel the connection between Marcus and Ares but I wanted to see more of it, I just wanted to see their connection and their relationship developed more.

All in all I had a really good time reading this book and I absolutely loved the author’s writing style and worldbuilding, I would take so many more books just like this one.

I received a copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

This is my first exposure to this author but they are one I will definitely keep my eye on. It was easy to become immersed in the world created here and I avidly followed the path of our two main characters from enemies to lovers. The depiction of the characters finding out about each other and seeing their feelings change because of that was very well paced.

Thank you to Pride Book Tours for allowing me to participate in the campaign for His Wildflower. Check @tabbybookclub on instagram on May 4 to see my stop!

First off, that cover is gorgeous. It was really what made me want to read the story, especially because the synopsis is so vague. The characters are so pretty, and the arm grab is just wonderful. I think it definitely plays into the main characters' dynamic.

IF I WAS TO WRITE THE BACK-OF-THE-BOOK SYNOPSIS I WOULD SAY:
In His Wildflower, Marcus wakes up on Aisin and is tasked with protecting the Blackwoods. Ares Blackwood, the oldest son and heir to Tenjin Research Facility, is even more hotheaded than Marcus and instantly they become enemies. As Marcus and Ares are forced to get to know each other better and fall in love, Marcus's past that he thought he left behind in fire comes back to the surface.

This book has a really interesting premise and very well thought out world building. Unfortunately, it reads like a rough draft. There are a lot of elements that quite frankly, shouldn't be in a final draft. The overuse of filler speech, the excessive use of exclamation points, and clunky dialogue really takes the reader out of the book.

There were also some plot details that were repeated over and over.

This really could have been a three star book for me if it wasn't for the mentioned issues. I couldn't stay enveloped in the book because of them though, and I ended up skimming the last few chapters. The vision behind this story is so great that I absolutly hate I didn't like it more. This truly could have been an epic series.

I was sent a copy of this book for review.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.
When woken from a procedure he is informed that his old life is over and that his new identity is Marcus Lui. He is now a Gatekeeper and assigned to protect the Blackwood family. This new posting is a way to escape the death of his family, the loss of friends and the horrific treatment he was subjected to by his old boss. He has enhanced skills, and senses and is connected to an AI system.
He meets Ares Blackwood and though he saves Ares’ life, Ares sees him as a violent psycho. The two have an antagonistic relationship at first as Ares is impulsive and reckless which rubs Marcus up the wrong way as he is trying to protect him which in turn leaves Ares believing Marcus is controlling and aggressive. As Ares continues to end up in dangerous situations, Marcus is the only one able to rescue him. As they start to open up about themselves the two begin a tentative friendship that soon blossoms into attraction. Marcus is shocked by his feelings as it dregs up trauma from his past while Ares feels he is a monster due to the condition he suffers from and is unworthy of Marcus. But when the two confront their desires and developing love they cannot resist acting on their impulses.
The man that once traumatised Marcus is now stalking his every step making him fear his retribution by hurting Ares. Surrounded by AI, warring factions and countless secrets, the pair have to find a way through danger to secure their future together. Only time will tell if they can succeed.
🌟🌟🌟🌟. A twisty, action-filled and emotional 'enemies to lovers' story. It has fantasy elements with a dystopian setting and AI components while maintaining a very human love story at its core. The development of the relationship between Ares and Marcus was slow but heartfelt. I felt the smut aspects (especially terminology and language used) were a little cringey and took me out of the story in these moments but overall I loved the story, the world-building with an intriguing backstory and loveable though complex characters.
Set in an Asian Inspired Dystopia, where clans are controlled or at least in some way ruled by and with the aid of artificial intelligence. We meet Marcuse who has just been woken from a near death experience, with very murky memories of his past life and name but strongly attune to his dangerous training. He is assigned as a bodyguard for Ares, the son of a powerful clan (more mafia like, with all the killings, betrayal and sex dungeons). Ares has a secret that makes him unstable and being near Marcus both triggers and calms him. However, his position puts him in the front line of danger and he constantly has to choose between his family, his life and his strong feelings for Marcus.
The choice is made for him when all hell breaks loose.
Very intriguing world structure, would have loved a deep exploration of the world, politics and the power structure of the outside 'united kingdom', but with less than 300 pages, I can definitely understand.
I did enjoy it, a different shift from the normal bodyguard romance. Ares and Marcus are my new semi toxic couple. I will be thinking about them a lot
Trigger warnings: Suicide, sexual assault
Thanks to #pridebooktours for making this book available to me as part of the tour.
‘His WildFlower’ is an Asian BL, cyber, sci-fi story about a young man, Marcus Lui, and the new world he wakes up in.
The fast-paced story mainly focuses on the sci-fi world aspects and has a side focus on the love interest of Marcus and another guy in this new ‘dystopian’ world. As the book goes on the reader gets to know more and more about the world that Marcus now exists in.
The author deals very well with world-building and deep characters, the story never gets boring. Throughout the story, readers get to learn more and more about the dark and unpleasant past of Marcus.
I really enjoyed reading this book, it had a lot of really cool topics that I don’t usually read.
[The recommended age for reading this book is 18 on Amazon. I would say younger people also could read it. No matter how old you are be aware that there're topics like sexual assault and suicide throughout the book]
Marcus and Ares despised each other since the time of their first gathering. They couldn't resist the opportunity to get on one another's nerves. In any case, the two of them had their own weaknesses and battles.
Marcus was all the while having bad dreams that brought back recollections of his life preceding turning into a Gatekeeper. Marcus needed to change his character after he was taken out of the battle that happened 3 months prior as when he woke up he was where he didn't know any person or thing. What is written in their destiny, will they stay together?
There is a ton occurring in this book, it's a speedy plot with constant activity. It was amazing to follow the way of our two primary characters from adversaries to lovers. The portrayal of the characters learning about one another and seeing their sentiments change in light of that was fabulous.
The chemistry between male leads is exceptional. The end was simply incredible and it was very erratic. I read this book from introduction to epilogue and cherished it.
TW: violence, death, suicide, sexual assault (not between main characters), animal killing
His WildFlower is set in an interesting dystopian world, with fast paced narration, a lot of action, and plot twists. It not only focuses on the romance, but also on the politics of this world.
Marcus is a man with a dark, and painful past. He starts his new life assigned to the Blackwoods. The older son Ares fights his own demons.
Together they go from being enemies, to friends, to lovers (it's a slow burn romance).
I really liked the chemistry between them, and the way they relationship developed throughout the book.
I also really liked Ares' brother Henry, and his friend Alex.
The end of the book is sad, but all eventually ends in a hope.
The only thing I didn't enjoy was the sexual assault (aka the non-consensual bj scenes). If you're sensitive to that content as me, please beware that there are two od these scenes - one somewhere between the 30 and 40% mark (I unfortunately didn't marked down the exact location), and the second one around 90%. There's also a scene depicting a killing of an animal.
I'm sensitive to this scenes, so I had to put the book down for a bit before continuing).
Apart from these three scenes, it was still an enjoyable book. Overall I give it 4*.
His Wildflower
Author : L. Grey S.
His Wildflower is an amazing, heart - touching and heart - breaking, jaw dropping BL novel. It is not just a love story, it has so much more to it. The world building is great and you get curious about it right from the first page. You get to know the world as one of the main characters, Marcus explores his new life as the new "Gatekeeper" in Aisin.
Marcus and Stig were assigned to the Blackwoods for their mission. Ares Blackwood, the heir of Tenjin Research Facility was a mystery for others, he didn't like to be around people and disappeared every now and then. He had his own secrets or rather his own demons to fight. On the other hand, the past was still haunting Marcus.
Marcus and Ares hated each other to the point that Marcus hated saving the man from getting killed. But what's on the surface isn't the entire truth as both of them slowly get to know each other and see each other's vulnerable sides, the romance and love starts blooming. This book is a treat for all enemy to lovers trope lovers and for readers who love slow burn romance.
The chemistry between male leads is incomparable. The romance is not the only amazing thing about this book, it has a lot of twists and turns, there is politics, there is power play and a lot of secrets. The end was just mind blowing and it was quite unpredictable. I read this book from prologue to epilogue and loved it. It was one of the best reads for me in recent years.
There is a lot happening in this book, it’s a quick paced plot with nonstop action. A dystopian world where nothing is as it seems, and Marcus Lui has many doubts and questions. But he doesn’t doubt his feelings for Ares. He is the calming force Ares needs. I also loved Henry, what a fun character!
The author has very creatively rather immaculately designed the plot, with essence of suspense, mystery, raw emotions along with lucid writing which is very interesting and keeps the readers hooked with it till the very last paragraph of the book and even asking for more.
The story is about Marcus and Ares who disliked each other since their first meeting.
Both of them had their own weakness and battles and they couldn't resist the opportunity to get on one another's nerves.
But Marcus realized that he needs to change his character after he was taken out of the battle that happened 3 months prior.
What happened all of a sudden that made him realize that he needs to change himself?
To know the answer, hurry up and grab this fabulous book.
The author has described the characters with a finesse and the narration automatically connects you with the characters.
The writing, the characters, the plot, the sequence of events......Everything is so intense from the beginning and it never slowed down. And I absolutely loved the fact!
The story moves quite smoothly. The chapters were not so long, so it became much easier for me to read it faster. Beginners can definitely go for this book and the avid readers can also pick this up.
Language inscribed is pretty much easy to grasp and can be enjoyed by all genre of readers. It is eloquent yet gregarious at the same time.
I could picture the events that were going on while reading the book as if I was watching everything in front of my eyes. It's that vivid!
Overall, I can say that it’s an unputdownable novel that one wouldn’t want to miss reading and I would highly recommend it to my fellow readers. I'm definitely sure that this will be your greatest read if you pick it as the next read.
*I received this novel for free in exchange for an honest review*
This novel was a mixed bag for me. Some aspects I really enjoyed and others I did not.
The premise itself immediately drew me as I was intrigued at the idea of algorithms dictating the fates of the main characters rather than their own freewill. The backstory to the world was well-layered and had many depths, but unfortunately this is part of the problem. There were vast pages of info dumps, which made very heavy and confusing reading. I really struggled to understand what was going on in some places because of this. It also contrasted against some other scenes between the main characters that desperately needed more depth but were over so quickly that they ended up falling flat.
The characters of Ares and Marcus were interesting, and they are well suited to each other. They each have a backstory that intertwines and reinforces the main theme of the novel. They are supported by a well-developed cast of family, friends and foes, but I did feel that there were almost too many characters and I had trouble keeping up with who was who and their own motivations.
The ending was poignant and fitted the overall novel well, but I would have preferred a little more closure than we were given, but this may have been because there will be a sequel.
✨Marcus and Ares hated each other ever since their first meeting. They couldn't help but get on each other's nerves. But both of them had their own vulnerabilities and struggles. While Marcus was still having nightmares that brought back memories of his life prior to becoming a Gatekeeper, Ares was struggling with a cycle which peaked with intense and uncontrollable emotions which could only be mildly suppressed by medicines and released by a violent outburst.
.
✨Things start to get interesting when both of these start developing feelings for each other. There are secrets to be revealed, secrets that can shatter everything and reveal what could never be expected or predicted.
.
✨This book is a beautiful blend of sci - fi, fantasy and romance. It has something to fancy every kind of reader. While the chemistry and love story is romantic and dreamy, there is thrill and action too. The world building is great and the writing style is very descriptive and graphic, it is perfect for visualization and the whole book plays like a movie in your mind.
.
✨The character development is great, not just the main characters but the side characters are well written too. I couldn’t predict the ending, and the climax was one of the best. This book was a great read for me and I would definitely recommend it to all the readers.
.
✨For me, it was a 🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 read.
There’s a lot to draw you in here:
The world building is complex in an immersive way— every element, large or small, adds to the dystopia the characters inhabit.
The characters have an intense journey to go on— the narrative arc covers some serious distance, and there’s a lot to see. Plus, of course, an enemies to lovers dynamic that was easy to get caught up in.
There are some rough edges— a couple of moments and choices I didn’t quite understand— but overall this is a compelling read with a lot to offer, and I’d definitely recommend giving it a chance.
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Marcus liu has to change his identity, he was knocked out in the fight happened 3 months before and when he woke up he was at a place where he don't knw anything or anyone.
They want a favour from liu, if he won't accept it they'll kill him and even he has to chnge his identity. So, he has to agree and that's when he met Ares who's his partner. Both have something to hide. Wht is written in their destiny will they stay together?
All the twists and turns makes the story really good. The cover is really attractive and i love it. The book has my favourite trope i.e. enemies to lovers. The author's writing is really good, the language used is not basic at all.
Overall a great read.
The author is new to me, and although I don’t read steampunk/dystopian, and the genres aren’t something I’m familiar with, I wanted to give the book a try. The two heroes intrigued me, especially Marcus.
Anyhoo, you can’t find two characters from such different societies. The world is as it is, but different. And the world-building did get a bit confusing because there were so many societies to remember. Marcus is a gatekeeper, working for what I assume is the government, and Ares Blackwood is a rich boy from a wealthy community who requires Marcus’ protection.
&DFN. I have to give credit to this author, the world they've built is complex, with a great amount of characters. Kudos for the creativity and the ability to create different people, each with their roles, and engage them in a complicated plotline. That notwithstanding, I couldn't get into the story. The writing style wasn't in any way fluid, weighted with unnecessary words and phrase twirls. I tried, but I simply couldn't get a good grip on the plotline or keep any kind of interest for what was happening. I will, though, give a chance to any future books by this author, because I honestly think they have great potential to write amazing stories.
