I must have bought this book 25 years ago when I was working on my MA in USSR history, but I had never read it. I expected it to be pure USA propaganda, but I was pleasantly surprised. McKnight gave the USSR credit where it was due, even stating that some things were done better there (education), and some things were done better than under the Tsars, but not as good as in the US (construction). He obviously pointed out areas where the USSR was weak compared to the US (agriculture), but overall, I felt he did an excellent job of looking objectively at the USSR (except that he honestly thought they were going to try for world domination).
