Sneaking Candy

All I ever wanted was to make a name for myself as Candice Salinas, creative writing grad student at the University of Miami. Of course, secretly I already have made a name for as Candy Sloane, self-published erotic romance writer. Though thrilled that my books are selling and I have actual fans, if anyone at UM found out, I could lose my scholarship ... and the respect of my faculty advisor, grade-A-asshole Professor Dylan. Enter James Walker, super-hot local barista and--surprise!--my student. Even though I know a relationship is totally off-limits, I can't stop myself from sneaking around with James, taking a few cues from my own erotic writing ... if you catch my drift. Candy's showing her stripes for the first time in my real life, and I've never had so much fun. But when the sugar high fades, can my secrets stay under wraps?

DNFed at 67%

Another DNF for me. I feel like an idiot every time I get around to reading a book just because it sounds good and end up regretting my decision. Which happens more often than ever. I swear this past few months I’ve DNFed or one star rated more books than in two years. I’m starting to get really picky… or bitchy.

I was checking my account on NetGalley a week ago (I think) just clicking random links of books that I could request and possibly granted for ARCs. Then I spotted this book...

The synopsis of Sneaking Candy caught my attention because of the premise. Candice Salinas is a creative grad student BUT she's also a self-published erotic romance writer under the pen name of Candy Sloane. It really got me curious as to how she'll be living the double life with her scholarship and respect for herself as an author and her works hanging on the line. Then we also have this two guy characters mentioned - Professor Dylan and James.

So, I requested for a copy of it. Then the next thing I know, I was granted a copy of this book days away from it's release date.

Hmmm. Sneaking Candy kind of fell flat to me. I was really expecting more to it than what was written. Yes, there were moments when I feel like laughing with what the characters were saying but it wasn't enough. This book is also filled with clichés, that Candice herself noted.

Candice keeps on stringing along what her characters would possibly do in this particular situation and in that one to her real life dilemma. This part was even pointed out by James, where he says that Candice may seem to have a split personality. I don't know if authors really feel that way too, but I think it's not healthy not to be able to distinguish yourself from their characters' behavior. Or in the sense of an author just relying to their characters' possible actions. We're our own person so it's just right for us to be able to face it as our own selves.

I don't know about you guys but I was sort of annoyed that "that James?" phrase keeps on popping out. That was totally overused. Candice, you know that it's James and we also know that too. So can you not repeat it again and again and again? It's not cute already.*sigh*

It totally lacked in the connection department for the main characters - James and Candice. Please do remind me of a scene where I can really pinpoint Candice felt love/like other than her "need" to be with James, way before she said that her feelings for James were more than the physical aspect. Because I really can't remember one. There's no depth with their relationship other than they're common answer as to who's the author they can't live without. Oh, and also the teacher-student relationship wasn't really that explored here.

Okay. There you go. It's 4AM already and *yawns*

Okay.... Okay... Okay.... I have to say this and I really mean it but I really LOVED this book! I have never laughed so hard in my life because the characters in this story were a riot. I love Lisa's style of writing and her writing about this taboo topic of teacher/student was awesome sauce all the way.

Candice Salinas is a creative grad student working her way through grad school. She has always loved writing as it comes naturally to her. So she decides she is going to do some self publishing under an assumed name and write something not so conventional like erotica. She is so good at it that she has a fan base and her books are selling like hot cakes. But her secret could cost her everything if she gets exposed oh and did I tell you she is acting out her erotica with a very hot and delicious student actually her student. If they get caught all will be over because she will lose her scholarship and her job. So what is a girl to do?

James Walker is a walking alpha male that is hot hot hot! He and Candice are sneaking around and he is fine with that because he wants Candice and he knows she wants him. James knows that he could get into trouble but it is worth it to him.

Can James and Candice keep up their relationship or will someone find out and ruin it for them?

This is such a fun fast paced read that is a must for everyone to read! Thank you Lisa I need more!

This was a quick and amusing read. There were some funny lines that caught me off guard. I figured naughty humor would be the default and it's typically not my taste, but the delivery was fun. Candice's silly, but smart roommate was often the purveyor of humor. This was a rom-com, but it touched lightly on deeper subjects like power dynamics and sexual harassment in academia, as well as author credibility in the romance genre. I liked the message and that it wasn't heavy-handed or didn't drag the story down. A nice romance to read between heavier fare.

I have to say...that I wish I could put words onto paper...like Lisa Burstein does. From the first page to the last...I have been in love with not only the characters...well...except for Professor Dylan...that____hole...lol...so yes...I have loved the characters she has created...because she made each of them truly come to life!!! But, I have also loved the plot...writing a great story...about a character...Candice...herself being a writer...who...has to deal with the pressures of being an author to make her parents proud...to that of which will make herself proud...even though it is erotic in nature. I am sure we can all admit to feeling the pressures of conforming to society in some way or another...and feeling confined and uneasy...that is what Candice must go through...luckily she has Mandy and James to help her realize her true destiny... And...I have to say...(while standing on my soapbox)...that there are many great books out there...which by many critics, won't be considered a "classic"...but darn it...hot erotic stories should be placed in that category...because like the classics...I will never forget this story...and will definitely read it again!!! So I encourage everyone who wants to read a story about a gutsy gal...who is out to prove the world wrong...to read this book...and you will enjoy it as much as I did...and will melt at the hot times Candice/Candy has while finding out her true self with James...

When I read the synopsis of Sneaking Candy, I was immediately intrigued by it. I loved the concept behind the plot and the fact that she is hiding this secret identity as an erotic romance author. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book to be a fun, sexy romance and I was seriously laughing out loud at every turn.

Candice is a grad student at the University of Miami and she is working on a literature fellowship with the famous Professor Dylan. He is a young, sexy, renowned author and she has the opportunity to be his TA and learn from him. He is also a pretentious asshole but I’ll get to that later. Candice loves to write but when she decided to forego medical school to become a writer her parents cut her off. Her fellowship pays for her school but she needs money to cover her living costs so she starts writing erotic novels under the pen name Candy Sloane. She is afraid that if Professor Dylan finds out, she’ll lose everything.

I loved Candice and found myself cracking up at her inner dialogue so many times. She is funny, smart and snarky but also a little unsure of herself. She has been abandoned by her parents and her heart was badly broken by her ex, Keith, when she left. Along with breaking her heart, he also decimated her self-confidence when it comes to men. However, when she’s writing as Candy, she’s able to dream up these incredibly strong and sexy female characters with the help of her good friend and roommate. Meeting and getting to know James definitely helps her come out of her shell.

“Forrest Gump had said life was like a box of chocolates. Now, as an erotic-romance author, I suppose I couldn’t help but wish it was sometimes like a box of sex toys.”

Professor Dylan is a grade-A asshole. He is definitely cocky and self-absorbed. He has a serious issue with authors like Candy because of their success and he feels threatened by it. He makes this very known to her and this definitely has an effect on her. She loves writing as Candy and it makes her feel so free but she is so afraid of what people will think of her if they find out. James is a hot barista who Candice is totally lusting after and I was so proud of her when she actually got up the nerve to slip him her number. He is gorgeous, smart, talented and totally into her. Unfortunately, he is an undergrad in one of her TA classes which technically makes him a student. Watching Candice try to maintain a professional line with James was hilarious because he was giving her all his best moves and James Walker is one sexy dude.

I absolutely loved the interactions between Candice and James. He really knows how to make Candice squirm with lust and want to throw all her inhibitions out the window. I loved seeing her open up with him and let him in. When she told him her secret, he was so supportive and he showed her that she had nothing to be ashamed of. This was huge for Candice because it made her realize that it doesn’t matter what kind of writing she’s doing, as long as she’s doing what she loves and making people happy. She wouldn’t give up being Candy for anything and she definitely proved that.

“Keith vs. James was like comparing a rock and Channing Tatum.”

Overall, this was a really cute and fun read. It had a sweet romance, a lot of humor and some very sexy, steamy scenes. I also loved the underlying message about not being ashamed of who you are and doing what you love, no matter what other people want you to do. Candice wanted to be a writer and she went after it, even if it meant losing her parents. Candice loved being Candy too and she wouldn’t give it up, even if it meant trouble with the university.

Sneaking Candy is adorable and sexy and fun. It's not my favorite Lisa Burstein book I've read, that honor still lies with Dear Cassie. But this is a good addition to the New Adult genre and it was fun to read a different kind of book from the author. It was interesting reading about a self-published author and her relationships with bloggers and readers and professors and her feelings about more "traditional" authors. I wonder how much of this is truth. And now it feels a little weird to be reviewing this book after reading about it from the character's POV. But regardless, it was a fun a read and it has James. So consider me a fan.

I don't even know what to say about this book but OMG...can you say book hang over! It has been two weeks and I still don't have a clue what to say about the book. So all I can say is SPOILER ALERT!

Candice has a crush on her professor, who she is also the Teaching Assistant for, but she also has a crush on the guy behind the counter at the coffee shop, who ends up being in the class she is teaching. On the side she write's romance novels as Candy because otherwise it would screw up her chance at completing her education at this school.

Then things get interesting and she isn't sure what's up and what's down. I loved the Candy character and I actually enjoyed reading about her struggles because I have actually been going through similar things with my family and writing career. This book actually inspired me to just sit down and write. Lisa is an amazing story teller and she makes you feel like your a part of the character.

~~~~~~~~~~~
This was another re-read for me. I originally read it several years ago but remembered that I enjoyed the book. The second time around was no different and I easily remembered what had happened but there were a few things I had forgotten.
Candice is a TA and Grad student in Miami but she is also author Candy Sloane which she has to keep secret. After a chance encounter on the beach at the department mixer she has slight feelings for her professor but she doesn’t act on them. Enter sexy barista/student and the newest dilemma in her life. As Candice’s life gets more and more complicated she starts to give in and let go. But is that a good thing? Does she go for her professor or her student? Do all of her secrets eventually come out? Will she finally give in and become the person she wants to be?
The first time I read this book I was in the process of going back to school for a creative writing major. But now that I have basically given up on school knowing that it is just not in the books for me, I have not given up on my passion. I figured out for myself that while yes it would be nice to have a degree it isn’t necessarily a must to be an author. It has been a few years and while I don’t write erotic romance I do have a couple of books almost ready to go. I like Candice have struggled with acceptance and this second read has hit me even harder than the first one did.
I relate well with this character in almost all aspects (I’m missing the men…lol). I love the plot and there were a lot of fun twists and turns through out the book. The flow and pace were absolutely amazing as well. I definitely look forward to reading more books by this author eventually. This book will also pop up on here again most likely because I can see it being read over and over.
This is definitely a book that should be on your tbr list! It is inspiring, sweet and fun. One day I hope to be just like Candice where everything falls into place.
I know from the moment I read the synopsis on Sneaking Candy from Lisa Burstein I would enjoy it. Its a great New Adult/Modern/Chick Lit read which will definitely appeal to many audiences.
Candice is an extremely likeable character. The girl has spunk, she's caring, friendly and an all round nice girl. Then you have Candy, who is also Candice but her 'pen name'. Candy is a naughty girl who write erotic books that are selling well.
I loved how she incorporated things like Goodreads, Facebook and Twitter into the book. It was like an insight into authors and what they think of 'Joe Publics' reviews on their books, or their comments. Sometimes it can feel like authors aren't anything like 'us' and are like the stars you see on tv, its nice to know they are just like you or me.
When it comes to eyecandy or should that be boycandy (?) Lisa gave us James.... Oh James... HOT! Yes James is HOT, VERY HOT. Add to that I loved his dialogue (Why can't my man talk to me like that?). James is a great character, he has the looks, talent but also is friendly, caring. Basically the boy most girls want to meet and fall in love with.
I sometimes wish that Candice would have stayed single so we could have had more 'Candy and Mandy' escapades... Mandy is a great character too.
This book just made me feel good, it made me smile, laugh and had a really good ending too. I thoroughly enjoyed and will be recommending it to others for sure. I would say 17+ on this one, it was a little naughty but nothing terrible and even the language wasn't bad. 4 out of 5 stars from me!
I loved this book. Being a self-published author myself, I could really relate to the struggles that Candice had with feeling legitimate and authentic. I was pulled right in and enjoyed the story right from the get-go (frankly I stopped watching a Meryl Streep movie to go back to reading). Despite the mentions of erotica, this book does not fall into the category. It is just a good-old fashioned romance. With professors and grad students and undergrads. Oh, and an erotic book conference thrown in for good measure. I read this book in one day and was sad to see it end. An enjoyable read and a definite recommend!
Me engaché rápidamente con la lectura y no quería dejar de leer. Fue un libro divertido y muy entretenido.
Parte buena: James. Quedé enamorada de ese personaje.
Parte mala: los clichés que eran reconocidos por la misma autora en el relato y sin embargo decidió usarlos.
Sneaking Candy is a fun story about Candice, a young woman trying to accomplish her dream of becoming a serious writer, while simultaneously making a living writing and independently publishing erotic novels—you know, like the ones we love to read. She has a constant and, often times hilarious, inner battle waging between her academic side and her alter ego, Candy.
She fled New York for Miami in order to study writing under the tutelage of Professor Dylan, a New York Times bestselling author. She is his TA and as such teaches a discussion class. She sort of has a crush on the jerk, and has fantasized about him, but mostly she just wants his respect and to be taken seriously.
“Apparently, I wasn’t eligible because I was a girl. It didn’t matter how much promise he thought I had because I literally lacked the necessary equipment.”
—Candice
The problem, besides that he’s kind of a male chauvinist, is that if he found out her secret it would ruin her credibility and possibly cause her to lose her fellowship. And she needs it, because after telling her surgeon parents that she wanted to be a writer instead of following in their footsteps, they disowned her.
“If it came from life experience, what was the point of school? I needed to be taught to be someone my parents might finally respect, might finally talk to again.”
—Candice
Then there is James, a barista at the local coffee shop who she has been drooling over for weeks. The Candy side of her wants to have her wicked way with him, and the Candice side is scared to death to even hit on him.
“I can’t tell you how many times I pictured being his white T-shirt pulled over his taut chest, wet from the shower, or balled up in the corner of his floor, still smelling of him while he slept, or hanging from his pocket as he ran on the beach.”
—Candice
Being new to the area and not having dated anyone since the loser ex she left back in New York, after he shredded her self-confidence, she somehow works up the nerve to do just that—hit on James.
“…writing as Candy with no male outlet was like having a vibrator with dead batteries and a cast on both hands.”
—Candice
Of course, this is where things get interesting, cause come to find out, James happens to be the star pupil Professor Dylan has decided to take under his wing, and also a student in the class that Candice teaches. So, as incredible as James looks, and just flat out is, he is also off limits.
“My reputation and my career here were more important that a guy who I could check every box for—a guy who any girl with eyes and a brain and ears and a nose and grabby hands could check every box for.”
—Candice
As she tries to keep Professor Dylan from sniffing out Candy, her life becomes increasingly more difficult, as does her efforts in staying away from James.
“My mind might have denied our attraction, tried to obliterate it, but that didn’t appear to matter to my body.”
—Candice
This story had some very funny moments, and I especially loved Candice’s roommate and friend, Amanda. Not only was she the one who gave Candice the idea to write erotic novels, but she also pushes Candice to let Candy “show her stripes,” the part of her that wants to live a little and enjoys writing what her colleagues would consider trash.
I liked the majority if this story and James was extremely sweet, sexy, and intelligent. He was my favorite part of the entire book. I felt the ending was a little rushed, things wrapped up way too quickly and I was left craving more. The writing was brilliant though, and I especially appreciated the nod to bloggers and the Indie writing and publishing community alike. I also loved that despite the fact Candy wrote erotic romance, this book was more New Adult and not overly sexual, because oddly enough, I feel it wouldn’t have fit.
I would definitely suggest sampling this sweet story for yourself to see if it suits your tastes.
But secretly, she had already made a name for herself as the new erotic romance author sensation – Candy Sloane. Although she was selling books and have garnered a lot of good reviews, not to mention some really great fans – if the university founds out, she would have to kiss not just her scholarship but her chance of a PhD goodbye. Then there’s her faculty advisor, Professor Dylan, whom she wanted to impress, but it seems it was a long way to go before she can get her approval.
James Walker – he’s the uber-hot local barista and, ahem, her student. She knew that student-teacher relation is frowned upon in the university, and she did try to stop whatever feelings she has for him – nevertheless, the attraction was too strong to ignore. Against her better judgment, she decides to sneak around with him. Indeed, the adrenaline rush brought about by going against the law promotes thrill that one couldn’t resist - especially when James starts to show in her writing.
Candice Salinas is way to prude to be Candy Sloane – but with her best buddy Mandy, and some hot kisses from James, it didn’t take a while before Candy Sloane was out of the box. But she had to deal with her dreams, her parents, her adviser and most especially, her future.
Yes, erotic romance had conquered the market since Christian Grey blindfolded Anna Steele. But what we don’t know what kind of battles have these authors fought to get their books published. Some intellectual snobs may consider them as trash, not knowing that these authors have worked hard to write, publish, and have their books promoted.
I love this book, not just because James is a hottie, or because Candice has finally found the courage to out Candy. Candice may have had self-esteem issues and paranoia at first, and it have taken a whole lot of motivation from James and Maddy – but in the end, she had faced her fears, made Professor Dylan sorry for what he did, and came out.
Lisa Burstein may not have been an Erotic Romance Novelist, but she had made this amazing novel encouraging new and aspiring authors, who may have once been given a bad criticism, and have their books branded as trash – what is important is not just the sky-rocketing sales of the books, but the number of readers who have thought of your book great, and who couldn’t wait for your next book to be out.
'Sneaking Candy' is a fun and steamy New Adult contemporary romance that follows our main character Candice Salinas as she attempts to combine her graduate classes, her TA job, and her love life all while trying to become a great writer. But Candice has a secret that only her roommate knows about - she writes erotic romance under the pen name Candy Sloane to help pay her bills. She's doing well as a romance writer, but knows that if her secret got out, her academic career and the hopes of being taken seriously as a writer would disappear. Everything seems to be going fine until Candice gets up the nerve to ask out the hot barista, James, from the local coffee shop. What she wasn't expecting was the fact that James is actually an undergraduate at the school and is one of her students. Knowing that any type of relationship with James is off limits, Candice can't keep herself away from him and they begin a relationship that even her counterpart Candy would be proud of.
This was a light and fun contemporary romance that had it's share of both incredibly hot scenes and more serious parts mixed in. I really liked the character of Candice. She was down to earth, determined, and smart. She also had her flaws, like her incredibly low self-esteem after her last breakup and insecurities about her ability to write. I found her to be realistic and easy to identify with. The setting was at a university in Miami, which was perfect for the book. Being a reader and an English major myself, I really loved that Candice wanted to be a writer and was teaching English at the college. She even mentions bloggers and their reviews of her erotica books in the story, which was fun to identify with. It kinda felt like she was talking about me in a way, which I thought was really cool. James is (of course) super hot, smart, and basically the perfect guy. Naturally, there has to be a reason that Candice can't be with him - that's one of the things I hate about these types of stories - but they try to make things happen anyways. I loved watching them get to know each other and seeing their relationship develop. As I mentioned, there were some really steamy scenes in the book that definitely had me blushing. Overall, this was a well written book with an interesting and engaging story line and lots of great romance and sexy scenes. Definitely recommended for fans of New Adult and contemporary romances.
The cover of Sneaking Candy was what grabbed my attention first and once I read the blurb I thought it would be a bit of fun. It turned out to be a quick read that I found to be quirky and sexy with a touch of seriousness.
Candice is in Miami, pursuing her dreams after a bad break up and rejection from her parents. She is a TA for Professor Dylan and there is a bit of an attraction between them, that they haven’t been able to explore. Candice takes her work and schooling seriously and isn’t the type of girl that would act on those feelings. Candice was encouraged by her best friend Mandy to write erotic stories and self-publishing them online to earn some cash to survive. That is how Candy was created and her latest story stars the new barista at the coffee shop, James. When she decides to channel a character from one of her Candy stories and puts herself out there by giving him a tip *wink* her whole life changes.
I liked reading about Candice. She is usually pretty shy and decides it’s time to step out of her comfort zone to put herself out there. It was amusing to see her being confidant, even though she was quivering on the inside! She has her own insecurities from her parents and her ex, but she is trying to move on and starting with James, who is sizzling hot, is a good start. James has a few secrets too, and has moved to Miami to start over. He’s not afraid to go after what he wants and Candice is definitely something he wants. They have great chemistry and a lot in common. He is a sexy guy who rides a motorbike, but he is also smart and has talent, both in and out of the bedroom…
I really enjoyed Sneaking Candy and how the story unfolded. It is focused around normal University life and what people do to get through. There is a bit of conflict there, but it gave more depth to the storyline. I thought that the sex scenes could’ve used a bit more detail as they were kind of glossed over and I think because Candice is an erotic writer I expected a little bit more. If you are looking for a fast, light-hearted read, definitely check this one out!!
Candice is a graduate student studying Creative Writing at the University of Miami. She has a full fellowship that covers her tuition and she is serving as a TA to professor and best selling author Anthony Dylan. Unfortunately her fellowship does not cover room and board, so in order to cover those expenses she has taken to writing steamy erotic romances under the pseudonym Candy Sloane. Professor Dylan loathes the indie publishing community, and the romance genre in particular. He is one of those that feels that self-publishing undermines the legitimacy of the written word. If he were to find out Candice’s secret, she would likely lose her fellowship and have to drop out of school.
James is a transfer student from NYU’s Creative Writing undergrad program. He has come to Miami at professor Dylan’s request and James is thrilled to be under professor Dylan’s tutelage. Professor Dylan has decided that he wants his TA to be present in sessions with his star student and the attraction that was already present between Candice and James snowballs and they soon find themselves in a relationship. Problem is, James is a student in Candice’s discussion section, and due to the university’s gray fraternization policy, she’s afraid that pursuing a relationship with James could be the end of her academic career.
Sneaking Candy was a fun, steamy read. I loved the relationship between Candice and James and loved that Ms. Burnstein called out the misogyny that we see in the publishing industry. Too often we see academic types look down their noses at the self-publishing industry simply because they thing there is some “worthiness” or legitimacy when it comes to being published.
Sneaking Candy was well written and once I got started, I didn’t put it down. It kept me engaged and I finished it within the span of an afternoon. It was a little predictable, but it was still very entertaining with a well thought out storyline and well-developed characters. Sneaking Candy was a solid four star read and I will definitely be checking out Ms. Burstein’s future work!
Sneaking Candy is the first book I've read by this author and I can't believe how pleasantly surprised I was! It was a fun, fast paced read with engaging characters. And more importantly I found that most of these characters were LIKABLE, which I feel isn't the case in a lot of NA books, especially in regards to the females. But not here. Candice was a delightfully messy riot and James an extremely hot alpha male with a tender side.
Candice is a serious literary grad student/TA, but because her parents refused to pay her tuition she is forced to use other means to pay for it. Her friend convinces her to put her writing skills to use my moonlighting as a self published erotica writer using the pen name Candy. It isn't long before she gains a following and her books begin selling like hotcakes. The only problem is no one can find out because it could cause her to lose everything she worked for including her scholarship to the uptight school that looks down on that sort of thing. Making everything worse is James, the hot motorcycle riding barista she's extremely attracted to...who also happens to be her student! It isn't long before Candice is acting out some of her erotica with him, but her self published writing and relationship with a student could cause her to lose everything, and she's not sure how long she can continue sneaking around before it all comes crashing down.
I feel like I would be remiss if I didn't mention the cover. The colors and the style instantly grabbed my attention and it fit perfectly with the story. Although a bad cover won't keep me from buying a book, an interesting one will make me more likely to read it, and this was definitely a cute cover that caught my eye. After reading some heavy, emotional books this was just the book I needed. So if you are in the mood for something sexy, funny, and lighted hearted with more one liners than you can count, I definitely would recommend Sneaking Candy.
Candy or Candice? I choose a little of both. I absolutely loved Sneaking Candy. It's one of those stories that gives you a little bit of everything and it's absolutely perfect for the New Adult genre. This is the third Lisa Burstein book I've read, and I loved the darkness of Pretty Amy, Sneaking Candy was equally fabulous for the exact opposite reason. It's fun to read a story that is rife with innuendo--but doesn't step over the line--and wit.
Candice led two lives and fought for ways to blend the two. I think most authors feel like her and I commend Lisa for sharing that aspect of our lives. The professor was the typical "man" and he's someone that you both hate and lust after. I'm not quite sure how she did it, but I almost loved him more because he was an ass. And then there's James... ah dreamy James... He's that boy in school that winked at you when you didn't have the guts to say hello. He's the boy that you played pretend with while washing dishes. (What you didn't do that?) But he's also all man!
The heat between Candice and James is fantastic! I wanted to be a fly on the wall, hoping Burstein would give me more--much more. They find each other when they need each other most and I love stories like that. But...they also have to learn to trust and that can be really difficult when even your own family doesn't care anymore.
I could keep going on and on about this story. I pretty much devoured it and barked at hubby a few times when he interrupted me. The writing is phenomenal, the story is fast paced and full of twists, and not only is there a happy ending, but there's a sense of closure (that most women never get)--you'll just have to read it to know what I mean.
Sneaking Candy is a fictional reality of what most authors live through each time they put their book babies out in the world. And for having the courage to share, I give five beaming stars to Ms. Burstein!
The premise of the novel is what caught my eye, but about 30 pages in, I just couldn't connect with the heroine and her silly issues. Candice is very indecisive. She has a small crush on her professor, who acts condescending and much older than his age one moment, but then he acts much younger and immature in a blink of an eye. I couldn't get a handle on who he was and why he acted the way he did. Then there is James, the cafe barista Candice lusts for. This comes out of the blue. James is portrayed as an okay guy, but he's not too dimensional. His personality is lacking, mainly because Candice sees him as as sex object. She fantasizes having sex with him, but can't connect with him on any emotional level, such as go on dates with him because of her stressed out professional life. She hides the fact she writes and self published erotic romance under the name Candy. She's overwhelmed by that big secret, her love/lust/hate relationship with her professor, and then James, who is added into the mix. I think things would have been much better if the story stuck with Candice and her attraction to her professor, including how she deals with his innuendos and her top secret writing life.
Sneaking Candy is a mix of New Adult/Romance/Women's Fiction/Chick-Lit, and itt doesn't mesh well together. I couldn't connect with the plot and Candice's motivations. There's really not much of a plot to speak of, and even Candice's almost love triangle between James and her professor doesn't bring anything strong on the pages. The lack of chemistry between her and James is very weak. The characterization of these characters are dull and not that exciting. Even Candice's roommate who has a peppy personality (and is obsessed with Candice getting laid) becomes quickly annoying.
Sneaking Candy fails on the overall deliver, and is a pretty forgettable novel. A pass.
By day Candice Salinas is a hardworking graduate student at the University of Miami. She is not only working towards her MFA, but also a T.A. for Professor Anthony Dylan, a current New York Times bestselling author. She dreams of becoming a serious author and nothing will hold her back. By night she comes Candy Sloane, self-published erotic romance author. Candy's books help Candice pay any extra expenses her T.A. fellowship does not cover. Due to the fact that she does want to be taken seriously, she does her best to keep Candy hidden from others.
James Walker, local barista and transfer student, has tremendous writing talent. He first meets Candice when she comes into his coffee shop to get her favorite Chai lattes even if he cannot make them very well. He just thanks his lucky stars she keeps coming back, and double the day she works up the courage to give him her number. Unbeknownst to her though, he's actually an undergrad, and in one of her classes.
Sneaking Candy is definitely one of best books I've read all year. It was cute, funny, endearing, and about any other positive adjective one can think of. Candice is such a likable character. She's flawed but not to the point where I felt like I couldn't connect to her, because connect I did. I related so much to her struggle of figuring out who she is. I may not be a writer but I have many facets of myself that I juggle every day.
I really enjoyed anything that had to do with the Candy persona and her writing. All of it came across as truthful and real. I felt like it's possible the author went through just as many challenges.
I only wish the book could have been more cohesive. A lot of it seemed written the way a person would speak. Which isn't a bad thing for thoughts, but was annoying after awhile.
Overall I would give the book 4-4.5/5 stars.
Smart and Sexy - that is Sneaking Candy. Lisa Burstein has given us something delightfully different with her New Adult Romance. I'm a huge fan of Lisa's novels Pretty Amy and Dear Cassie, and now Sneaking Candy is added to my "favorites" list.
How it's smart:
Sneaking Candy is a book that I would have liked to read in an academic setting, possibly in my Popular Fiction class. With this novel, Lisa exposes the world of author hierarchy and prompts the discussion of who determines the value of literature. Is it the readers? Other writers? Does a wide fan-base equal success or does a book have to make it to a world-wide recognized best-seller list to be successful?
How it's sexy:
Sneaking Candy is filled with chemistry and tension between Candice and Professor Dylan and Candice and James and when Candy sneaks in there (pun intended), you better watch out because it gets all steamy. Naughty times! Oh James and your tight, white t-shirts, where have you been all my life?
Sneaking Candy was a fun book to read with so many oh-my-goodness and laugh out loud moments. I liked reading how the main character saw herself separately as Candice, the grad student, writer, teaching assistant and as Candy, the naughty, impulsive, erotic romance author, and her recognition that she didn't have to be two separate personalities. Reading Candice embrace her Candy side were some of the best moments of the book. And her roommate and friend Amanda, aka Mandy, was the perfect sidekick to Candice's Candy. That girl needs her story told!
I loved Sneaking Candy. If you are looking for something funny, fresh, smart, and sexy, then this is the book for you!
"It was so much easier to be strong and fearless and free on the page than it was to say with words."
Candice is TA at the University of Maine who on the side secretly writes erotic romance novels under the name as Candy. She can't let anyone know especially in her job because no one with take her seriously. No one other then her best friend, Mandy knows and that's about to change. When she meets James walker Candice tries to act like Candy and does something out of the normal by asking him out. Problem is, hes her student. Even with this hanging over their heads they can't stop being around each other and she reveals to him about her writing career on the side as Candy. Will her secret with James and her side job as candy stay a secret for long? Read the book and find out!
I really enjoyed this fun and steamy book. I loved that Candice was a women that many women and writers can relate to. I loved that she was a smart girl who is doing things on her own without the help of her family. I liked that she got a amazing and supportive best friend. I loved how different his book was, nothing like I've read so it was unique. This book was funny at times and very interesting to read. Now that I'm thinking about it this book makes me wonder if there are erotic romance book authors out there that are just like candy, somewhat in a way embarrassed at writing what they do? Just simply curious...
What I loved about this book was that it was original and fun to read and I think you readers will love this book as much as I did. 4.5 of 5 stars!
So it was super cute. I loved the fact that the author was writing fiction about the stresses of being an author with all the nuances that go with that.
Candice (Candy) is complex and has her issues but wanting something or wanting the idea of something are two totally different things.
You think that there may be a bit of a love triangle thing going to happen then that notions vanishes with her boss being a douchebag and she is left with sweet James.
James has his own issues but with Candice he knows what he wants.
It's one of those books that didn't wow me but I still found it super sweet. I like Lisa Burstein's writings. This is the first foray of hers into an older genre and I thought it was done well and I loved the concept and idea of the book.
No sabría cómo empezar. La verdad que siento que leí otro libro al que las reseñas de goodreads alaban con cinco estrellas porque yo a esto no lo veo para tanto...
Admito que me llamó la atención la sinopsis con lo de "profesora-alumno", ya que no es muy común que sea así, sino al revés, profesor-alumna.
Al principio la historia iba bien, me agradaba, pero luego empecé a preguntarme si le faltaban páginas, porque las cosas iban tan rápido y no le encontraba sentido.
Antes de seguir, cuento de qué trata. No es tan complicado: Candice está haciendo una maestría (o doctorado, ya ni me acuerdo) en Literatura. A su vez, ella escribe de incógnito como Candy libros eróticos. Conoce a un chico con el que tiene onda pero resulta ser su alumno. Terminan teniendo sexo. Blabla.
No es la gran cosa, pero bue, esperaba más.
Las cosas pasan muy rápido, en un momento tenemos a los protagonistas despertándose luego de su noche de pasión (que obviamente Candice no recuerda porque estaba borracha) y a los dos días ella piensa que esa situación no puede continuar porque eso es algo físico y blabla. Y otros dos días después esto ya la supera y no puede dejar de pensar en lo bien que la debieron pasar (aunque no lo recuerde)...
Estoy feliz de no haberlo abandonado porque no me gusta dejar libros sin terminar. Le doy 1.5 estrella porque los primeros capítulos me habían gustado como para seguirlo.
Sneaking Candy by Lisa Burstein was a fun read and a page turner from start. It had everything which makes a story interesting and has you involved in the story. The plot about a grad student moonlighting as an erotic romance writer was new and exciting to read. Candy was the star of the story for me because she was so much fun and her attitude towards everything just won me over. She had flaws and that made her even more relatable. Read More
I love a good fluff read and find that I need one every now and again but this one just didn't do it. I picked this one up because the blurb sounded decent and the premise of the story sounded good. It ended up not being that good at all. The writing isn't all bad but the story kind of went around in circles. I felt no connection whatsoever between the characters. It doesn't matter what kind of book it is if I can't feel the connection between the characters then it's not going to work for me. Sadly, this didn't work. Luckily, I only spent $1 on it...
