After studying Archaeology & Anthropology at Oxford University, best-selling author and designer Sally Coulthard has spent the last twenty years designing, making and writing about homes, craft and outdoor spaces.
A lovely little book, with excellent illustrations, exploring the myths and folklore of 50 of the most common varieties of flower. It is not an encyclopaedia, and nor is it intended to be, so it provides something of a whistle-stop tour and doesn't cover much in detail. It is, however, perfectly sized to slip into a pocket during a countryside walk. As with all of Coulthard's books, it is also engagingly written, expressing humour as well as knowledge, and communicating a deep joy in the natural environment.
Really enjoyed this one. Loved how each flower got a brief background on the myths and history relating to it. I wish we could bring this knowledge back! People were so witty with their flowers.
I breezed through this one, and at that, happily. This book is stepped in both aestheticism and a lovely amount of information and content. As a lover of flowers, this book surely satisfied all my fondness of its subject matter! The delicate artwork paired with the useful and cute information is relaxing the read through.
This is not another floral language book focusing on just Victorian flower language meanings, which means that it is already getting brownie points for being original. Instead have you wondered about floral symbolism, floral history, floral lore and even/or floral language whether it may be Elizabethan, modern or your usual Victorian? This book will have it covered to a certain degree....
Floriography isn't a comprehensive book since it only covers fifty known flowers although many are quite well-known to even those who may have limited plant knowledge. As such readers of all grades will find something worth reading about when they open this book.
The book is organized into groups of twenty-five (13, 12 then 13, 12) while each of these sections are then further separated by a collective page of various plants all meaning the same sentiment to one degree or another. And from there each entry is then provided with its own two page or four page entry for each plant, which aren't alphabetized.
Each individualized entry is then provided with the name of the flower followed by a bit of a poem or quote that includes the name of the author as well as the date of that writing. And as such readers will find various sources whether it is biblical verses, books, poetry, folklore or even song lyrics to name just a few. From there each entry focuses on the mainstay for the plant's main use in its history whether the mainstay has been medicinally such as for sage, historically/nationally such as the wattle and infamous thistle or art such as the wisteria, etc.
Other included information that may be covered in its entry may be the origins of its name, its lore, (especially Christina lore although nods to Japanese and Chinese cultures are included) whether it has been used medicinally or for occult as well as the reason why it was done so, its symbolism in art and even whether it was used in flower languages while then breaking ti down into which ones and their meaning.
The illustrations are really basic and although stylistic enough that you know what you are looking at they are really aren't too realistic. Furthermore I noticed that in the cases where each entry has more than one page of illustrations most of the illustrations are just flipped versions of the original included artwork thus you are just seeing copies for illustration purposes.
All in all it was a really good and interesting book while those who are into plants whether they may be gardeners, plant collectors or even just those into folklore will find something to peak their interest once they open this small book up.
This is nice book, it's interesting to flick through and I liked the illustrations. The book contains illustrations of flowers alongside their meanings, how they got their names, mentions in literature or involvement with folk takes and legends. I thought this could have been bigger, it's about paperback size and covers some flowers but not nearly enough. Would like to have seen a bigger book, with more illustrations, information and a more concise collection of flowers.
Kus on müüdid? Kus on maagia? Kus on keel? Millisest sõnast taime inglisekeelne nimi pärineb, lühike luulerida, kuidas taime rahvameditsiinis kasutatakse ning milline on taime kristlik pärimus on see, mis sa siit raamatust saad
Gorgeous illustrations, very very aesthetically pleasing. It is not an encyclopedia on flowers, but rather a nice introduction/overview that will make you think of the meaning behind flowers before gifting some. Sally Coulthard has done a great job here.
I loved the writing. I just wish their actual photos of the flowers. The illustrations were beautiful but not as helpful for actually identifying the flowers. I know it's not an identification book but i am just beginning to be able to id flowers so photos would have been helpful.
Very insightful and I loved learning about different theories of the meanings behind flowers and what they may have been used for or thought of in the past. Pretty boring but also intriguing?
I really liked this book. The messages are endearing. The illustrations are wonderful and I really enjoyed learning about the language of flowers. A great read and i gave this book 4 out of 5 stars!
Considering its small size, this little gem is filled to the brim with intriguing facts and folklore about commonly met flowers. It would make for delightful and easy summertime reading.
Leuk concept & mooie illustraties!
I think it could have been more elaborative but I really appreciate the idea behind this book. As someone who’s obsessed with flowers, reading about the myths of them was so entertaining.
I finally know what my favorite flower is! It took me 21 years to decide!!
I love lilies, they’re my flowers. So happy to have found the flowers of my soul.
Will definitely come back to this book after about 4-5 years.
