As an Air Force pararescueman, I was supposed to save lives in Afghanistan, not get my best friend killed.
When my time in the military comes to an end, the survivor’s guilt won’t let me go. Now tornadoes and women are the only things that help me cope, and they both come with the same warning: Don’t get too close.
Following that rule was never a problem until Mother Nature dropped me in the path of Paige Landry.
As a trauma nurse with a knack for healing, it doesn’t take her long to realize my truth—I’m a broken man who chases storms to escape the storms chasing me.
But she doesn’t know the destruction I’m capable of. That getting close to me is an invitation to disaster.
I can’t protect her if she doesn’t heed the warning: I’m the tornado. Don’t chase me.

Hazel James owes her writing career to her 12th grade English teacher, who wrote, “You should consider a career in writing” on the top of her short story. As a kid who grew up bringing books to the dinner table, Hazel took that advice to heart and became a journalist in the Army.
Years later, Hazel read four books that gave her the courage to begin writing her own novels: Divergent by Veronica Roth, Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell, Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover, and Bright Side by Kim Holden.
Hazel is best known for her military romance novels, which weave in pieces of her husband’s Army career and journey with PTSD. Connecting with readers and promoting the importance of mental health awareness will always be the biggest highlight of her career.
Hazel lives in Tampa Bay, Florida with her husband and three children. When she’s not writing, she can be found knee-deep in a DIY project (usually accompanied by 90s music and a Diet Coke).
The reason I DNFed… I became very aroused… *wink* After reading about 2 OWs who made the H’s d’ck throb, with one of them he slept (after he met and lusted after the h) – but since there was no actual sex-scene I read further. But then my feelings became too much, I was jealous and mad, that this hero would never cross my life path… because this statement made me love him!!! …the idea of only having one vagina for the rest of my life makes me feel claustrophobic. P.S. The heroine had a bf and later got engaged. Sorry, but it was too sweet for my liking!

I didn't even make it past the first page before I was smiling like a loon. With a clever reference to a book I love - Hazel James hooked me and from there? It was all heart eyeballs and swoony feels.
Well, okay, not all heart eyeballs and swoony feels. There were also tears. A virtual feels explosion, actually. And a hearty fascination with these delightfully layered characters that kept me flipping pages desperate for more of their story. A story that was hilarious - packed with irresistible flirty banter and loaded with sexual tension, and also also incredibly emotional - some of the stronger emotional punches hit me unexpectedly and the tears flowed freely. Chased is almost equal parts light and heavy - a perfect blend that sometimes left me breathless and always kept me hungry for more.
I adored Paige and DH. I don't even know what to say about them. Paige, a woman after my own heart in so many ways, was the exact type of person I'd want as my best friend. A little bookish, but plucky and sweet – it was impossible not to like her even when her behavior was a bit prickly. And beautiful, broken DH – that guy stole my heart right out the gate. His cool, irreverent, tough outer shell hid a heart so warm and open – it left me melted to a puddle at his feet. I loved how richly layered he was, and how no one part of his history defined him. He was a breath of fresh air, a bright ray of sunshine, and is currently taking up residence in my heart (this may be a permanent situation).
I loved - well - everything. I loved that Ms. James handled all the tougher issues with respect. I loved that she didn't gloss over anything or allow issues to magically resolve. I loved how Paige and DH communicated - both with each other, and with the fun and quirky secondary characters who loved them. I loved the pop culture references and the book references (you don't even know - my inner book nerd is so happy right now). I loved that this story hooked and twisted in ways that I didn't see coming - but that, in the end, it left me smiling so big, my heart full and happy. ~ Shelly, 4.5 Stars
A new-to-me-author, Hazel James, delivers one of only a few romances I've read that include a tornado chasing hero. Living in the middle of tornado alley where the wind comes sweeping down the plain and where tornadoes come calling each spring, I've dived into my hidey hole more times than I care to remember so this book resonated with me immediately. The Oklahoma setting for this story, along with references to many familiar sites located in close proximity to my hometown, gave it a personal feel. How could I have missed Chased when it was first released over a year ago? I'm very pleased that I got a second chance when it showed up on Kindle Unlimited this past week (without a real tornado, thankfully).
As a reader, there's nothing better than finding yourself captured by a book that makes you forget you're reading words, and suddenly all the descriptions and conversations are playing like a movie in your head. I'm still reeling from being engulfed by this twister that covers a lot of territory. An awe-inspiring writer, James paints pictures in your mind that simply absorb your thoughts and emotions before sweeping you away into a vortex of time and place. From laughing out loud to reaching for Kleenex to dry tears, and every kind of feeling in between, the book is filled with an even division of good, bad and ugly.
This story entails some dark elements. It wasn’t always an easy read. There were some very difficult and heartbreaking issues that were included which might present triggers to some readers. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Suicide, Childhood Abuse, Alcohol and Drug Abuse are among them. The author deals with each one realistically, sensitively, and respectfully. Our hero, DH returns from foreign service with injuries and PTSD, along with the kind of childhood memories that create nightmares.
Told in first person alternating POVs by the two leading characters -- Paige Landry, a hard-working, sassy and book-loving Emergency Room nurse with a Cherry-flavored Chapstick obsession, and DH Rhoads, retired from the Air Force Military Pararescue Team, now working as a mechanic in the family business -- and a man who chases storms in both his personal life and weather-wise. From the moment they meet in the ER, one bump on the head and a "Drive Friendly" sign later, they are pretty much on each other’s radar with their chemistry at an EF-5 rating.
Another great layer to the story is the friendships and love that is shared among family and friends. Everyone and everything feel real and like home. Small town camaraderie and close-knit family relationship are at the center. DH shares a close relationship with his dad's brother and his family. Between DH and his cousin Eric readers are provided with some great bantering and male bonding experiences. Paige is an avid reader and a few of her favorite books will be familiar -- she likes romances! She quickly becomes great friends with DH's family and circle of friends.
The biggest problem for me with this story was the fact that Paige had a long-distance boyfriend who quickly became a week-long fiancé. Poor Chad never had any page-time with his fiancée – just a few text messages and phone calls (including the break-up). The addition felt like he was an afterthought to add a little more drama where none was needed. He never stood a chance against the storm chaser, and the story would have stood just as strong without the weak link.
The other little blip, in what I found otherwise to be a stroke of perfection, involved DH and his dirty talking that came on like gangbusters from the get-go. It was a bit over-the-top, too much, too soon -- for this reader anyway. You could probably best describe him as rough around the edges with a heart of gold. There was no way that DH Rhoads was going to let me walk away without falling head-over-heels for him. It just wasn't in his DNA.
Eventually, the storm clouds clear and the sun shines through, bringing an amazing Epilogue filled with clear blue skies and a solid and joyous happily-ever-after. A book I highly recommend to any reader searching for something surprising and noteworthy attached to the romantic trope. Don’t underestimate the power this little gem packs. CHASED has ALL the feels and details to add that extra layer of remarkable!
I loved reading the story of Paige and DH. This book has so many funny moments and there were many times when I found myself laughing out loud. I love when I'm reading books and people around me are wondering what it is they're missing out on. This is one of those books.
Paige is someone you want to be best friends with and it's very refreshing to see a character like DH having real issues and working through them.
Literally DNFed it… the characters have no substance to them other than constantly thinking and talking about sex… very disappointing 💔 I can’t push past and I only got to chapter 5.
Really enjoyed it! It made me feel so many emotions. I laughed, I cried and was on the edge of my seat. I love the bit of chasing that we got to see. I love these two together.
Currently one of my favorite storm chaser romances. I love when they both went on a chase together. I think it really showed her more of who he is and he got to see her in action too.
I really wanted to like this book but sadly I just couldn't get into the story. I think for me, it was a matter of being really turned off by the hero. DH (ridiculous name btw) was just so over the top and in your face. His love for women was evident at every turn of the page and his bravado got old fast. Paige as his love interest was better but I could spot where the story was going from the very first chapter. The wonderful woman with the boring boyfriend who meets the cocky arse who eventually becomes her man. There just wasn't anything new and as much as I figured they would end up together, I honestly skimmed a good 100 pages or more just to finish it.
I appreciate the author's time in the military and the issue of PTSD is real and she wrote that part beautifully. DH's friend Patch and the guilt he feels about his demise was well done. It's just too bad the romance part was somewhat immature and grating.
Oh well, better luck next time and I may just give this author a go at another time.

Did I finish this book? Yes. Did I eat up the banter that happened in the first 40% of the book? Also Yes. Did I get annoyed when the FMC broke off her engagement, fell in bed with the MMC within hours, and was confessing that they loved each other in their inner dialogue? A Definite Yes.
This book was almost confusing because the time line felt like it was jumping all over but at the same time only like a month had passed. It was confusing because they were confessing their love for each other and getting engaged in like 2 months. I get that "when you know, you know", I just didn't like that's how the book turned. Especially because I was eating up their banter at the beginning of the book. One things I can agree I liked about this book was that the FMC ended her engagement and didn't cheat.
Also, I feel like the plotline with the MMC mother was so unnecessary in my opinion because I felt that his growth was already their without that ending. Don't get me wrong, this book was enjoyable enough to finish, but I felt like there were more negatives than pros to this book.
I was in bit of a book slump before starting this, but 'Chased' dragged me out of it and had me hooked from the start. I loved DH (the main guy) from the minute he appeared in the book and I loved him until the end and Paige was a wonderful heroine. This couple had their share of problems, which added new dimensions, but it wasn't too heavy and didn't leave you drained at the end. It was a perfect mix. I loved the background theme of DH being a storm chaser, which I didn't know much about before reading it. It added a different dimension to the story which I really enjoyed. Hazel James is a new author to me and this won't be the last book I read from her. Her writing is brilliant and she surprised me on several occasions with unexpected twists (which I love). 'Chased' is an all round easy book to read. It is the perfect mix of love, humour, emotion and drama that will have you captivated from the first chapter. 'Chased' certainly doesn't disappoint. 5 sparkly stars.
Ok. Here's the deal. Hazel James is a gem. Not hidden. No. she's out there bright and shining, just a beacon of light needing to be seen. So look up. Seriously. If you haven't experienced the wonder that is Hazel's writing, you're missing out. Chased, her second published work, reads like that of someone who's just published book 30. It's unique and humbling and so original.
DH and Paige are characters I want to reach into the pages of Chased, pull them out, and make them real. I mean - they SEEM real. Hazel's depth of writing sucked me in from the very beginning and I found myself desperately turning the pages for more while at the same time never wanting it to end.
Incredible work, Ms James! You can chase me any time.
I am in the complete minority here but I'm at 30% and have already started skimming. It's just kind of boring and predictable. I don't really like Paige. She's kind of judgemental among other things. DH is definitely a womanizer but every other scene is him running into some curvy woman who's giving him their number and his dick is happy. And we hear a lot about his dick responses and Paige's boobs responses or how the other would like to see those responses. Paige also has a boyfriend still and she's obviously crushing on DH and this is just not my jam....
I read Saved by this author last week and LOVED it. This one is just really boring though. I have no interest in continuing to read it.
Good but slow. Wasn't the type of story where I just had to know what came next, but I finished it just the same (which says something for me. I will be the first to find something else if a book isn't doing it for me). I think this would be a better read for someone who doesn't like a lot of angst and wants more of a "sweet" love story. I tend to prefer darker stories with more angst.
4.5 stars I really enjoyed this book! I especially loved DH (male lead). His story and the depth of his character was amazing. I loved all the feels! This would have been a 5 star except there was a lot of cursing in this book. I am all for the occasional F bomb but this was over the top to the point I was thinking “do people really talk this way”. That being said, the banter was amazing and the spice and love story were great!
The author kindly gave me an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. I went in having absolutely no idea what the book was about and I was pleasantly surprised. It combined the adrenaline rush of storm chasing, sweet romance and an obviously deep knowledge of PTSD. DH was swoony and Paige was a very likeable heroine. All in all, an enjoyable read!
Hazel has quickly became an auto-buy author for me. I was so anxious for Chased and wasn't disappointed! DH and Paige were amazing and I loved the buildup of their relationship!
I live in Oklahoma & have been through more than one tornado in my life, so reading about a storm chaser in Oklahoma was definitely intriguing & original. Paige has found the perfect job in her field of nursing, and life was good until she was caught up in a tornado (and yes a hospital in that area was destroyed in a vicious tornado in real life). After that, she viewed life quite differently as it was traumatic of course. DH is a straight up adrenaline junkie so it wasn't surprising after he got out of the military that storm chasing was his jam. I have to be honest, I really didn't ever warm up to him after some things happened that tend to mess up a story for me. I really loved Paige though, and I loved the fact that Hazel James tells the story of PTSD realistically since it's definitely a problem for our military after they leave a war zone. I'm going to keep this review short & sweet since I don't want to talk about my dislike since it's just a personal preference so I won't ruin it for others! So I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you decide for yourselves!
Super cute book! I loved the overall story and the bit of suspense throughout. I do feel like the last 25% had a super rushed timeline, i don’t think the book had to include everything it did. I did really like the story!
It was pretty good. The letter his dead friend wrote him had me tearing up. I liked the dynamic between Paige and DH. They seemed to make each other better. Especially her helping him work through some army PTSD. It was sweet for sure.
“ I’ve spent my entire life chasing after things because I never thought I was worthy of being caught . And then you came along , with your country music and cherry lip gloss and you changed everything . For the first time , I felt like I was worthy of love . Of having a future . Of growing old beside someone . You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me , and I love you more than I’ll ever be able to put into words . I want to spend the rest of my life with you . Will you please be my wife?”
Before I even start this review, I must clarify something: I read this book a farely time ago so forgive me if I don´t remember the story exactly neither the character´s names. Except DH, because c´mon, how can I forget that man?
“ I want a man who’s above comparison . I want the butterfly - infested romance from the books I read . The kind of romance that makes me crazy when I’m with him and crave him when he’s gone . I want my relationship to fuel me the same way it fuels him . Screw the paper , I want chemistry.”
I remember that at my first attempt to write this review, I had mixed feelings about the rating that I was going to give to Chased. Because even though I loved the book, it didn´t break my reading slump at the time. And, to be quite honest, I thought that I would forget about this book in a matter of days. Turns out, even though I read this book about (almost) a month ago, I still remember all the butterflies and giggles that created inside of me.
“The shirt I’m wearing represents the day I opened myself to someone else . The next chapter of my life started on my couch about ten hours ago , and so far , the first page is blank . It’s fucking blank , and that scares me more than all the darkness that came before it , because I want you to be with me when I write it . I don’t want to be alone anymore. ”
But, if you asked me: do you prefer DH and Paige´s relationship before or after they got together, I seriously wouldn´t know how to answer straight away. Because even though DH was SUPER SWEET (in the most perfect way possible) as a boyfriend, I really liked the banter that Paige created with him when she was trying to hate him (and all of his responses to her). Oh man that made me laugh one hell of a lot.
“ I make no apologies about my past , but I know what I want for my future , and that’s you . I tried ignoring it , but I can’t anymore . You said you wanted chemistry , not paper , but for me , you’re a goddamn atomic bomb.”
But, one thing that I´m most certainly about is how much I LOVED AND CRIED during the epilogue. Because, c´mon guys, I´m the epilogue girl. Of course I remember the freaking epilogue of this book. It was epic and PERFECT. So... yeah. I know this was not the best review I ever written, but this is what you and I both get when I´m too lazy to write a freaking review when I just finished the book and wait till about a month later to finally write something. Again: I´m sorry! But do a favor to yourself: doesn´t matter if you like the erotic bits of a book or not, if you´re a romance fan, you´re completely going to drool for DH and Paige´s lovable story.
Life never follows our well mapped out plans. It's always an off-road experience, complete with some mud, blood and a few scrapes and bruises along the way. Sometimes, things have to go a bit sideways before we find ourselves in the perfect place for a miracle.
DH's journey started in the gutter and he's spent his entire life clawing his way out. To say he's got some hang-ups from his messed up childhood is an understatement but then throw in his time as a PJ in the Air Force and he's the walking, talking poster for PTSD. He's the perfect storm. Maybe that's why he's fascinated by them.
Like that tornado, I was a product of instability; a life of hot and cold converging in a battle that, given the right conditions, could create something truly awesome.
Slightly bookish, ER nurse, Paige Landry, doesn't even know she's in the path of the storm. She knew moving to Oklahoma might mean she'd experience a tornado but she had no idea, he'd have a dirty mouth and be wearing jeans. So far, she's been fairly safe on her journey, with her perfect career path and loving boyfriend, Chad but DH is shaking up her life. He's cocky and arrogant, frustratingly handsome...and he stirs her up like no one else. Chad's great but if she's honest, he's as boring as beige paint. DH is technicolor. She puts up a good fight for awhile but when the antagonistic friendship reveals the broken man underneath, it's impossible not to get swept away by the storm.
On the surface, he’s a broken man who chases storms to hide from the storms chasing him. Underneath, the shattered pieces of his life have transformed him into a stained-glass masterpiece. He’s the most beautiful kaleidoscope I’ve ever seen.
I LOVED this book. The characters are richly layered and deeply compelling. All of the characters were great but I simply fell in love wth DH. Just head over heels in love with this broken man. He was so complex and deep and fun, so much fun! My heart broke for him and my arms longed to hold him. The story would've been heavy without his quirky sense of humor, unabashed flirting, and the breath of fresh air coming from Paige. She was the smart mouthed sunlight in DH's darkness. The sexy times were hot and the pop culture references and the nod to the South were super fun.
I also so appreciate Ms. James' handling of the topic of PTSD. No quick sweeping it under the rug, no weak characters, just people fighting a battle with it everyday. I loved the references to VetSports, a very real organization dedicated to helping veterans through service to others and sports and Camaderie Foundation, where veterans and their families can locate resources outside of the VA.
I can't wait to follow more of this author's journey! Climb on in and come along for the ride, just watch out for those flying pigs!!
I love when a book I’m reading mentions or refers to another book. It feels like the author is building up, appreciating, and recommending another author's work. I find that neat! You are hit with it right off the bat in this story and it made me want to keep reading. However, the amazing writing, the story line, and the great characters had me devouring this book as fast as I could.
Paige is an ER nurse, a bookworm, and a sassy spitfire with a cherry lip gloss obsession. She’s sweet and good and real. She’s 100% relatable. DH, not as much. He had a rough childhood. He’s a disabled veteran with so much misplaced guilt. He has a love of storm chasing. But he’s also a man whore of the highest degree. I had a problem with that. He and Paige were not together when he slept with her coworker but still...
Paige and DH had explosive chemistry. It was so combustible that DH couldn’t stay away even knowing she was different than his usual type and that she was in a relationship with someone else. They both seemed to understand each other in a way that no one else got. That’s not to say they didn’t have their problems (back to the co-worker hook up).
There was some tough stuff to deal with in this story, but it was done so amazingly and real. It was heartbreaking and perfect. I fell in love with the secondary characters. I want to know more about them!
"Paige is a bell I can’t un-ring, and I already know I’ll never be able to get the sound of her out of my head."
I am a little at a loss for words with this review. I'm just not sure I can say enough to describe just how beautiful of a writer Hazel James is. This was the first book I have read by her, and it definitely won't be my last. She writes the kind of words that speak to your soul. The kind of characters that you connect with on a level that makes you never want to leave their world.
Chased isn't all rainbows and butterflies. It isn't a romantic comedy or a lighthearted romance. This book is gritty and dark at times. It is honest and heartwrenching. But none of that changed the love I had for this novel. It just kept me wanting more. I needed to know what was going to happen next. I flew through the pages, crying, smiling and laughing the entire way through. It might not be a lighthearted book, but there was definitely a good amount of happiness sprinkled throughout the book.
This book was everything I needed from a romance novel. So don't hesitate to give it a chance. I can promise that you will love every second you spend with these characters. And I'm so happy that I have found a new favorite author!
What an amazing and emotional experience Hazel James has shared with readers. In her book Chased, she tells the story of Paige, an ER nurse who moved to Oklahoma after graduation. As with most entry level jobs she works the night shift in the ER where she meets DH. She is attracted to him but she is all but engaged to Chad who lives 7 hours away while he completes his degree in accounting. As we all know it is hard to fight the pull when you have a distinct attraction to someone. DH is not looking for a relationship since he feels he is not worthy of a happily every. He was in the air force and lost his closest friend. Paige and DH choose to be friends but the attraction they share is strong! You will not put this story down. It is filled with lots of ups and downs, and even one last grip of the heart in the end.
I won a copy of this book and I was super excited to read it based on the synopsis and the fact that it had to do with storm chasers. Living in tornado alley I love anything and everything to do with tornados. I started this book with expectations and was blown away, both by the writing and by the story. This was so much more than just a storm chaser book. It had so much heart and feeling that it was easy to get swept away in the story, so much so that I read this in one sitting and ignored pretty much everything around me. I highly encourage every one to read this book. It has a sexy, cocky storm chaser with a broken childhood, a major rush of adrenaline, a sassy nurse, a whole lof of heart, a small dose of love and forgiveness and a whole lot of passion for life.
This was a surprise book for me. I have not heard of this author before, and I have no idea how I came across this book. I just know that I downloaded it via KU, and it was sitting on my kindle, and decided to give it a try.
I'm so glad I did! It was different in the sense that the hero is an ex-military man, who on his free time from being a mechanic, chases tornados! DH is such an amazing hero, and I fell in love with him right off the bat. The heroine, Paige, is a nurse who you can't help but love!
While there were a few cheesy parts in there, it was a great read, and I look forward to reading more of this author.
