After losing the love of her life, sex with no strings is the only thing that Angel Lux is interested in. Seducing straight women seems the best way to keep her plan from going sideways. But this time she’s gotten herself involved with another man’s fiancé. And he’s hell-bent on getting revenge.
Soon Mike has convinced his friend Chris to help set a trap to steal away his ex-fiancé and teach Angel a lesson. At first reluctant, Chris soon finds herself knee deep in the scheme, complete with high heels, lipstick, and a sexy red dress.
What starts as a ruse for one and a game for the other quickly turns to a connection neither Chris nor Angel expected. The chemistry between them might just finally be a force strong enough to heal Angel’s broken heart. If Chris’s lies don’t come between them first.
3.25 Stars. While this story wasn’t really for me, I could see other readers enjoying this. Bella has a great track record with debut authors so I’m always up for reading any new authors they sign. While I wasn’t really into the story as much as I would’ve liked, the writing quality was there and this was well done especially for a debut book. This book relied on humor at times with over-the-top characters which is not something I’m personally big on so it’s not the writing but more the story choices that I didn’t click with.
This is a story filled with stereotypes, but trying to do it in a funny way. I was not really big on the whole premise: guys leave your girlfriends at home since the lesbian seductress in on the prowl. While this was mostly meant to be lighthearted, I just still thought it was icky and had trouble with it anyway. I also thought the whole “seductress” theme doesn’t really seem to fit the character it was assigned to.
The characters seem very love them or hate them to me. I’ve noticed early reviewers really enjoying them, but for me it was the opposite. I just could not vibe with any of the main ones. Besides the “seductress” character not really matching to me, I found her love interest Chris to be a little bland. While I wanted to like carpenter Chris, her lack of any communication skills, drove me nuts half the time. And then there was Mike, who honestly almost ruined the book for me. This macho asshole that people call the police on for domestic disturbances one day, while the next he is attempting to beat-up a different woman. And the whole time everyone, especially Chris, is like oh he’s just a cute and cuddly teddy bear. If this asshole is Chris’ best friend, how can I not at least question Chris herself?
While Mike almost ruined the book for me, the character of Elizabeth Bentley saved the book for me. This woman, who is only a secondary character (a wedding planner/officiant) comes into the book like a hurricane and shakes things up in the best way. I don’t know where this character came from but I would read a book staring her in a heartbeat. I think that was my two best takeaways from this book. One that Sherry can write, and two that hopefully she will be writing about Elizabeth Bentley.
TLDR: This was not a Lex book, but the writing quality is definitely there. With this being a debut, it makes me excited for the kind of quality books Sherry could write in the future. I think books with humor and over-the-top situations can be a bit tricky. They either click or they don’t and this one just didn’t click for me. I would suggest reading multiple reviews before you decide if this book is for you. I think there are people out there that will really enjoy this story. While this was not for me, I will be reading Sherry’s next book because I see her potential and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some Elizabeth Bentley in our future.
This is a rom-com with some flaws but I also think it's quite entertaining if you don't take it too seriously. The plot is a little crazy and the side characters are cartoonish. There is no romantic build up before the main characters get some action and I'm not sold on the love they claim to have for each other at the end. But the story is lighthearted and interesting enough that I wanted to finish it.
Angel is a womaniser with a penchant for seducing straight women because it's easy to keep the dynamics casual with them and to me, that's a little warped, no matter what reason she has for doing it. She doesn't care if the women are available or not even though she does care if somebody is hurt in the process. But she's a genuine character and I like her. Chris finds herself embroiled in a middle of a revenge plot to seduce Angel after Angel's rendezvous with Chris' best friend's fianceé is exposed. Chris is a little harder to like even though she's the least complicated character. There's a lot of half truths coming from her to Angel and to Chris and she doesn't seem to feel bad about any of it until she's exposed.
When I say the side characters are cartoonish, I have two of them in mind. Mike, who is Chris' best friend, is like the cartoon villian whom we already know is going to be the largest obstacle in Angel and Chris' blossoming relationship. And Elizabeth, who is the wedding officiant, is like a cartoon hero who appears out of nowhere to save the day.

Angel only seduces straight women to avoid any long term attachments. Her heart was shattered when she lost the love of her life a few years back. Chris has trust issues stemming from the revolving door on her mother’s boyfriends. This keeps Chris from giving her heart away.
The plot involves Chris pretending to be straight to get Angel’s attention away from her best friend Mike’s fiancé. As you can imagine all sorts of trouble ensues but in a light and entertaining way, for the most part.
Chris, Angel and the secondary characters are diverse and quirky except for Mike who comes across as thuggish at times. His hostility towards Angel is over the top in some incidences and physically threatening in others. The dialogue has humorous moments and moves the story along at a pleasant pace. If there was one character whom I would like to know more about, it would be Ms Elizabeth Bentley. She comes into the last quarter of the novel like a stormtrooper with attitude. Her backstory would make a great novella.
I received an advance review copy for free from Bella Books and NetGalley. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Maybe I should give a disclaimer for this review. I read this book at a bad time and it likely has affected my enjoyment of it. As some of you know I had to let go of my beloved cat a couple of days ago. Working fulltime from home for almost two years now means that I saw my furry friend 24/7 and he was very big on cuddling, so I was (and still am) extremely sad over losing him. That said, I’ll do my best to give an honest and fair review and actually this book provided a good distraction. It was a light and easy read, and I found the writing style very appealing. The downside of the book for me was that I could not connect with the characters in the book.
This book has serious over the top characters and some humor. Humor in books is a hit or miss for me and when I read some early reviews I expected the combination of humor with the over the top characters to be a miss, but surprisingly, I enjoyed most of the light humor in this book, but I struggled with the over the top characters.
Flaws can make characters real and endearing, but in this book, it appeared to have the opposite effect for me. Especially their reasoning did not make any sense to me. To give an idea about strange decision making, let’s talk about the plot of the book. There is the lesbian seductress, Angel, who only seduces straight women that are preferably in a relationship. She seduces Maddie, Mike’s fiancé. In reaction to this, Mike and his best friend and business partner Chris come up with a plan for Chris to seduce the seductress. You would think this is about revenge, but it is not, it is all about distracting Angel, so she loses interest in Maddie and then Maddie will -of course- automatically run back to Mike. This was the first head scratching moment for me. Why would she run back to him, and why this elaborate trap instead of wooing Maddie to get her back? Then there is Mike himself, and I know I’m not the only one here, but what an asshole. One moment he’s sobbing like a baby and the other moment the police is called because he’s ready to assault someone. A bad guy in a book is ok, but Chris, Maddie and Lucy were constantly defending him, saying he’s all talk but doesn’t really do anything, but why then do they run to the scene every time he has a temper to calm him down? Honestly, what do they see in this guy? And how can I like them if they like Mike? Clearly, several characters start out with questionable character traits and they do have some character development, but it wasn’t always convincing.
This book wasn’t the best match for me, and this also depends on my reading preferences and the timing of reading it. Especially the over the top characters is not something I easily like, so perhaps others will like this better. I did enjoy the quality writing and the flow of this book (especially considering this is a debut) and I’m curious to see what Sherry will write in the future.

2 ★ | Could NOT finish this book for love nor money. It’s to the point where I proactively avoided opening it. So I just gave up. I really can’t be bothered. Maybe I’ll give it another go in the future. (Highly unlikely). Got to 25%, couldn’t possibly go on… too unrealistic, couldn’t feel anything at all, I was actually LOSING feelings that I didn’t even have to begin with… truly baffling.
This is a great debut by this author, so much so that it’s rather hard to believe this is a debut novel in terms of writing style.
Let me start with the things I didn’t like. Mike, he’s an awful character and doesn’t deserve redemption. He’s a huge dude and he has an awful temper that easily ignites and almost leads to violence a couple of times. He’s ridiculous. And I don’t like the trap, basically how Angel and Chris get together. I think Chris should have been honest sooner. Also, the womaniser act by Angel isn’t that believable when you get to know her and how she interacts with Chris. Oh and the focus on Chris’s bottom, please stop it.
On to the things I do like. The writing style, it’s great, the story flows easily. There is humor in this story and it’s such a nice and light read. And I do like these characters, flaws and all. A chef and a carpenter, great combination. And I am very interested in the British woman, the wedding officiant, Elizabeth Bentley. She comes into this book very late but she leaves a mark. I like how Angel and Chris get to know each other by working together and keeping it platonic. For as long as they can manage at least.
Overall great debut, with some issues, but in the end very enjoyable read. 3.5 stars
*ARC received in exchange for a voluntary and honest review*
Overall, I really enjoyed this novel, particularly due to the amazing chemistry between Angel and Chris. I will admit that I really liked the first part of the novel but then it felt as though it lost traction and direction.
I actually quite enjoyed the weird revenge-plot storyline, but in the end I felt really badly for Angel and although the author sets us up to dislike her as she's a 'womaniser', I felt sad at how she was treated by the majority of the cast. She got a lot of flak and I couldn't quite understand why. It was Addie's decision and it takes two to tangle. Mike was such a big baby and I really disliked the big chunk of the novel that he featured in. He was aggressive and I would've loved for him to have been taken down a peg or two by the end of the novel. (This part of it remained unresolved for me to be honest!) The way Chris handled her friendship with Mike and relationship with Angel irked me, but I still enjoyed the novel overall.
All in all a good debut and I'll definitely be reading what Jac Sherry releases next.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bella Books for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
I guess I have been having a good turn because it is another book that I had a good time with.
I love the MCs who I was introduced to closer to the middle of the story. That was interesting because I had to figure out their personalities on my own throughout the first half of the book. Also, the supporting characters get a lot of attention, especially on Chris’s side We don't get to meet any true witnesses to Angel's narrative, which is a shame. Like some type of celebrity, her only source of knowledge about her life is the Internet. Was this done on purpose?
The plot is predictable, with the idea of seduction as a revenge. It is clear there are broken hearts, guilt, and secrets that are hard to keep. But gladly, the author avoids too much drama due to the whole intrigue. Instead, we get numerous romantic moments, stirring decorations and carpentry workshops.
Both MCs are extremely gifted individuals. Angel owns a restaurant, creates her own dishes, and works in the kitchen with the rest of the employees at various stations. Chris also uses her hands to make wonderful things. Such occupations may be ideal for imaginative readers.
I'd recommend it as a lighthearted romance with little to no drama, endearing characters, and a bunch of friends who cheer them on in their ups and downs.
Angel is a no strings attached lothario, her target, straight women. She seduces Maddie, engaged to Mike. When one night Mike catches Maddie in the embrace of another "man". Mike's bestfriend and business partner is Chris, a beautiful lesbian. When Mike finds out Angel is a woman, he and his sister Lucy concoct a plan to seduce Angel, using Chris, to pull her away from Maddie. This is a fun read and HOT!! I'll read more by Jac Sherry!! 5 stars!
A fun, light hearted read with relatively angst free romance and wacky side characters.
Book opens with Angel Lux on the prowl in a bar. She is unabashedly committed to her mission and set her sights on someone who would not only land her in a hot mess, but be the cause for her heart to be played instead.
Chris is skilled; in the literal carpentry and working tools sense. She has no business in sexy, impractical clothes and killer heels that could seriously maim her. Coerced by her best friend Mike and his sister to entrap the seductress who enticed Mike’s fiancé, she managed to trap Angel but lost her heart in the process.
The synopsis was a draw and the book was pretty hilarious (I can still remember some of the conversations!)! Being a big fan of romance, if more loving was written in the pages and their connection given more time to bloom, it’ll be a truly neat and balanced debut book.
I just reviewed The Seductress Trap by Jac Sherry. Thank you NetGalley and Bella Books for the ARC.
A great rom-com, The Seductress Trap was so much fun to read. I highly recommend this and as it's the first book I have read by this author - I cannot wait to read more in the future! Great job!!
This is such a light read and honestly there's a lot of humor in it which I loved. I don't think i disliked any character, that in itself is a miracle. I was interested in Elizabeth I don't know if the author is planning to make something for her in the future or this was just there as dialogue but I felt like a hint that she and the happy couple will be back in another book. I won't be against it since Elizabeth was great i'd like to know more about her. Moreover, I really liked the fact that the author did not make all characters gay as many books do ( she, her friends, her neighbors, her co-workers... the guy who's car broke in the meddle of nowhere) and that's so disconnected from the reality, leading the story to balance quite nicely IMO.
Highly recommended. that's for the author and her team for the trust in exchange of honest opinion.
A cute cover draws your attention to this new romance. Angel Lux doesn't want a relationship. Instead she finds it easy to seduce straight women who want to experiment. Her latest conquest happens to have a very large fiancé, Mike. His partner in a construction business is Chris Karner. Mike convinces Chris to pose as straight to attract Angel drawing her attention from his future wife. Of course things go sideways.
This is light reading with some funny moments. I actually liked Angel more than Chris because she never was deceptive in what she was doing. Truthfully, the revenge plot didn't make a lot of sense to me. It seems silly, when Mike should have been either dealing with his cheating fiancé or wooing her back. I did like the honest conversations when Angel opens up to Chris about her past and plans for her restaurant. I didn't feel like I got to know Chris very much other than she's been lifelong best friend of the crazy Mike. I was also confused by Elizabeth the wedding officiant. I can see her being interested in using Angel's restaurant for future events but didn't understand her interest in getting Angel and Christ together.
I will look for future books by the author. This one just had some plot points that didn't entirely work for me. Thank you to NetGalley and Bella Books for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Angel sleeps with straight women as a way to keep her heart protected. She ends of sleeping with Mike's fiance and a plan to have Chris, Mike's best friend and a lesbian seduce Angel so that Amber runs back to Mike is hatched. Chris pretends to be straight but soon finds herself falling for Angel and doesn't know how to come clean without losing her. I will look for future books from this author. I think she shows a lot of promise. There were certainly flaws in this story but the potential is there for Jac Sherry to be a very good romcom writer. I didn't love how Angel used straight women to take care of her needs while not thinking about how her actions affected others. And I didn't like the plan to get revenge on Angel by having Chris pose as a straight woman and how Chris didn't come clean sooner. The two women fell hard really fast and there wasn't enough build up. And then there's Mike, who was a complete stereotype of the jealous, obnoxious male. He was difficult to sympathize with. I probably would have slept with Angel too, if Mike was my boyfriend. I actually liked both lead characters, even though I didn't love some of their behavior. They were both intelligent women who worked hard and were clearly missing something in their lives that they found in each other. And Elizabeth, the wedding planner, who came in near the end and was like an all-knowing Wonder Woman, intrigues me. Feels like we haven't seen the last of her. All in all this is a promising debut. Some of it didn't work for me but that doesn't mean it won't be exactly the read you're looking for.
Chris Karner, along with her best friend Mike Lundgren work together fixing what others can’t. And business is pretty good. Chris is a loner, mind you she wants a relationship but the dance one goes through just to meet someone isn’t something she is willing to do. Her friend Mike has asked his girlfriend to marry him and Chris is slated to be his groom-of-honor. But before the big day Mike discovers Maddie has been having an affair with another woman. Mike is raging mad and wants to do some serious harm to the other woman but he’s never punched a woman, he along with his sister, Lucy planned how to best hurt Maddie’s lady friend. Angel Tux likes sex, a lot but the idea of stepping into a relationship is not a part of her future. She had that at one time but cancer got in her way. Now she owns and manages the restaurant she has always dreamed of. Picking up women is second nature to her now. She also prefers married women. Less chance they want more than a night or two, perfect. But when she seduces Maddie her plan backfires and she finds herself a little more involved. That was until Maddie’s fiance finds out. The plan is simple. Chris is to meet Angel, seduce her and after a while Chris is supposed to walk away from Angel, hopefully hurting her the way she’s hurt Mike and Maddie. I mean what can go wrong, right. This is the first book from a new author signed by Bella Books. I enjoyed reading it so much I look forward to her next novel.. Nice read. ARC via NetGalley/ Bella Books
Oh, I loved Chris's character. I wish I was as cool as her. Angel's character, on the other hand, felt like such a predatory creep. I couldn't get over it after the opening scene. Mike definitely got the bleep end of the stick. This plot was just so messed up on so many levels...which made for a pretty interesting read. There were moments where I was excited to find out what happened next, so overall I enjoyed the read.
It took my by surprise, how much I relate to Angel's storyline. Losing a wife to cancer and the fear of loving someone that deeply, is real. It made me laugh, cry, gasp and feel romantic. I recommend this story to anyone with a beating heart, and wanting a great love story. Beautiful.
Chris and her business partner Mike own a carpentry business. Mike has asked Chris to be his "best man" at his upcoming wedding. But when Mike's fiancé is seduced by Angel, who meets her at a bar, the wedding is in jeopardy. So Mike and his sister convince Chris to pretend to be straight in order to lure Angel away from Mike's fiancé. Reluctant to agree at first, Chris gives in and goes ahead with the trap but soon develops feelings for Angel.
This was an interesting set up, though I know it is difficult to redeem Angel as a character. I didn't have an issue with that, but I know a lot of readers did and will. My issues had to do with sections of the book that had too much detail about setting and carpentry that I didn't feel were necessary. In addition, I don't feel that the author gave a reasonable explanation about why Chris would end up doing a carpentry job for Angel after Chris decided to abandon the fake relationship. Since that was a pivotal plot point, I think it required more.
I loved the adventure of both Angel and Chris. Chris trying to help a friend and gets taken out of her comfort zone. Thrown into a red dress. What starts as helping a friend turns into something real. Angel with all her success likes to go for the safe bet with hookups - no attachments. when she meets Chris " she lands on her" each meeting after she finds qualities in Chris that she wants in a partner. They both decide to have a platonic relationship. I loved the friendship that Chris ran every time there is a midnight call from her friend or his sister. I found Mike to be a total ass in most of the book. Mikes fiance was more relatable.
O not sure where to add the beautiful table.
Would love to see where this authors goes with the next books.
I have to say that I found this surprisingly well written. The story flows very well and was a nice quick read. I'll be on the lookout for more from this writer.
It's kind of interesting how many reviewers note that this isn't a story that should be taken with too much seriousness, but in the same breath have a lot of negative things to say about the male character and not a lot to say about one of the female characters who's somewhat of a selfish sexual user as the story opens. 'Angel' gets off a bit too easy.
But whatever >shrug<. I recommend it. At under 170 pages it's a nice diversion that pulled me in. 3.75 stars.
Very rarely do I wish for half stars but this is one of those. I go back and forth between 3 and 4 stars. There are aspects to this story that I don't like (lying and threat of violence), but I did like how it came together at the end.
I really enjoyed this debut novel by Jax Sherry which was a 2023 Goldie finalist. The story is fun and we’ll plotted. The MCs were well crafted with compelling backstories. Even the supporting characters were interesting. It was also well edited. There’s nothing that ruins a book for me more than typos.
