this book didn't wimp out. When it says bird man it means BIRD man and also I guess I hate my braincells since after HATING the first book I'm still so damn curious about the rest of the series
It pains me to give this book two stars as I was really looking forward to it, but this book was a let down. If I’m being honest the first book in the series is okay at best, but it’s made a little better with corky elements like a cat that can communicate with the alien MMC and an interesting misunderstandings. This book doesn’t have any fun elements like that to fall back on. The romance was underdeveloped and I found both leads boring.
I was thinking it may pickup later on, but it never did and by the time I realized that I was to far in by my standards to DNF it. I really wish the author spent more time developing both leads and their relationship. This felt more like a rough draft than a finished story.
For a book with a bird and an alien love match, I was surprised at how boring this was. The lovemaking scenes were not sexy at all. They made me scrunch my face up and I’m in no way a prude. I’ve read about more biological different matches. However, the beak, the claws, the twisted p, it was very much not working … for me. The scenes also went on for far longer than they needed to. Considering how boring and uninspiring they were.
When it comes to the plot- nothing happened. Girl crash landed on strange planet. Bird man rescues her, they … fall in love??? I don’t know how because their interaction did not give, “I’m falling for this person” Their interactions felt almost surgical. In that, it was methodical and detached. That’s how it felt. Very unnatural.
Too much telling. Scratch that. There was never a moment where we saw. We were always told. “I’m going to write to the union” “I am a councillor who helps strays from disenfranchised planets” “I sometimes travel from this villa for work” We never got to see anything! I don’t mean to be harsh, but I found myself picking this book up when I was hit with a bad case of insomnia because I knew it would put me to sleep. I finally managed to push through it and it disappointed me to the very end.
Even that epilogue. What was that? Ughhh.
I gave it 2 stars because it started off okay, but kind of lost its way after the first chapter. Though I couldn’t move past the bird … parts- I liked that the author stuck to the - dare I say ‘authenticity’ - of the bird characteristics. It was very bold.
I’m tired of females going all girl power in dire situations. They need help but want to act like they’ve got it all on lock. It’s like yelling at a guy who comes to save you in an ambulance. In that situation a little humility would go a long way. Otherwise you’re just a bitch. Yes, ordinarily you’re very capable, but right now you need the help. So shut the hell up and be grateful. Jfc!
Naomi was on the first cruise on humans into space. Sure, as a bartender, but still, space! It promised to be exciting. And it was. But only because apparently a certain type of alien really didn't like humans blundering into their space. They shot the ship down. Now she's crashed on a tropical paradise with a large feathered alien. He's taken her in, promised to help her, and she has to admit the feathers and sweetness aren't off-putting.
Spoilers ahead. He coos. It's adorable. Naomi doesn't waste time after crashing. She's not worried about what's left behind. She's immediately looking to the future. First and foremost, her career. She is independent. She's willing to accept help as needed but will put in the work to ensure she has a stable income. New doesn't slow her down at all. It's so refreshing. No lamenting, no tantrums. Axel is a sweety. He is there from when she crashes to her decision to stay, helping her find her feet every step of the way. And I like the no fated mate story very much. They make their choices, without biological imperatives forcing them. And, even better, she's not all baby fever. They consider possible future children but they've already planned a life that's fulfilling without them, too. I thoroughly enjoyed both characters, and visits from some previous ones.
Had a tough time with this. The cover was AMAZING so I wanted to like this story so much...or at least get to the 'good stuff' but the writing style threw me and I was bored. I don't read to be bored but to be entertained and whisked away from the humdrum of the daily grind. Maybe I'll try this one again... but life's too short for boring books
Why do authors confuse strong female leads with self righteous demanding heroines who even tho are being helped they act like ungrateful idiots! Naomi was annoying and I skipped most book.
First of all: if you like the style of writing in book one, this one's the same. That being said, the writing in this, again, is over-embellished. A lot of editing could fix this text, so I'm not sure why the team isn't catching some of this stuff. Most of the problems (I've found, in my opinion) stem from clarity.
For example: " It was as if a bucket of ice had been dumped on me, silencing my laughter as I gasped, my attention riveted on the unknown creature. "
" I jerked my head in his direction, throwing up my hands, and took a step closer to him, glaring in his face, unable to believe what he was saying. "
" “I’ve been nothing but honest with you.” His eyes widened as he dropped my wrist, as if my skin had caught fire and I had burned him. " (all in chapter three, spaced over three pages)
They're just so redundant. The action stacking...and the use of idioms and phrases...and the dialogue. Just a lot of it isn't really well used in-text, so it gets a little iffy. I have a hard time staying in the story when I have to chew on all the extra verbage.
Another note on dialogue; it often doesn't REALLY stack logically. Over the course of a scene, they'll parlay back and forth, repeating themselves so many times--yet react like it's new information each time. There's a scene where she gets his clothing to wear and the back and forth on that is mind-boggling.
My favorite instance was this one though: " “I want you to claim me as yours.” "You’re not the one in charge.” Squeezing my hand tightly, he released it and jerked back. “I am, and I’ll make you mine.” "
Like, she just said she was down, and he's all--"NO, I'M down." Just...what? It makes sense I guess from a sexy point of view, but sure, disregard her answer. That just weirdly happens a lot.
These things aren't BAD necessarily. But they are annoying when they eat up the majority of your attention.
The first human spaceship cruise unfortunately goes beyond the security area, and invades the airspace of the Yzefrxyl, a feral and territorial species. With the attack, the ship's crew flee in small pods. Naomi, a beautiful black human with braided hair, works as a bartender on the ship. There is a wedding party that is interrupted by the attack. Naomi helps some guests, the grooms and bridesmaids to escape in the pods. She takes one of the pods herself with another wedding guest, Soraya. Their pod crashes on a planet and is found by Ixik'tryl, an avian male. Ixi's friend, Lyave, of the Calyzis species, upon seeing Soraya, says that she is his mate, and decides to take her to his house to take care of her. The other human remains in Ixi's care. Naomi then finds herself in front of a bird man (even though he says he's not a bird man) who wants to help her. Her options would be to be sent to a new Sanctuary being built for lost species, or to stay with him and improve her skills as a bartender (studying mixologist). Returning to Earth would be complicated and time consuming, and probably, even if she made it back, her life would never be the same since the survivors of the alien attack were the first humans to have any alien contact.
The first interactions between Naomi and Ixi do not go well, but soon she realizes that she needs him. As the species cannot speak each other's names correctly - because Ixi has a beak - they decide to give each other nicknames. Naomi = Ami Ixi = Axel.
Ixi/Axel was on that planet just on vacation. Working as a Counselor, he traveled a lot. Days pass, and the two begin to feel interest in each other, with the possibility of becoming a real couple. 4stars
A short sexy read in the IPA series, this one features human bartender Naomi, and Ixik’Tryl, an avian species and councilor for the IPA. When Naomi crash lands on another planet, she is rescued by Axel, and taken to his home. There she is introduced to her new reality, a universe inhabited by many beings, and a new romance with a bird-like alien.
This is a steamy short, which does feature a few cameos from other books in this series (Sarah from the Catman book makes an appearance). The unlikely relationship between human and “Birdman” is fairly well handled, if a little hard to imagine.
It’s a quick read though, and definitely a fun choice for alien romance lovers.
I have to say that it’s going to be hard to top her first book I read about Sarah and her “cats”. I’m a huge cat persons with six of my own and I really enjoyed that one immensely. This one was good on details but there wasn’t really a “plot” other than their love story. Which is good for a quick feel good read but if you’re looking for more to the story it isn’t big on that.
No me gustaron.
I liked the storyline and learning about the avian species. But everything was perfect for them almost too perfect. A little imperfection would be interesting. Ami becoming a mixologist just didn't seem to fit the rest of the storyline. It was different but out of place. The beak kissing I just couldn't picture how it worked. The book cover artwork was beautiful.
Throughout this entire novel, I was trying to figure out our male leads autonomy. I had to go back to the cover multiple times because I was so confused about what body part and where it was on his body. That was the only distracting part of this, but aside from that, I liked it.
I love books where the alien actually looks like an alien. Axel was a bona fire grump in the beginning but I liked that about him. And I liked how he stood his ground and told Naomi off too. I love a strong capable heroine and she was it. I just wish that they had increased their flock.
I really enjoyed the first book, and so I patiently waited for this one. I'm not sure what was the difference, but this one felt really rushed to me compared to the first. Still a really good book though and can't wait to read the next one!
This is a really sweet and endearing romance. I loved the story and the plot line. Jade always does such a great job with designing her worlds and the relationships between the characters. As always excellent story. Loved it!
I am usually really open-minded when it comes to paranormal romances, but I had a hard time connecting to this couple. Personality-wise, I liked Axel & Ami. Axel had a good heart and was willing to do whatever he could to help Ami achieve her goals. He was both fierce and loving and for that, I like him. I just had a hard time getting past the birdman aspect. It was very difficult for me to imagine....like how do you french kiss someone with a hooked beak? Yeah...I don't see it. For that, I took away one star.
…then this is the book for you. Other than the excitement of the opening scene, this is a pretty easygoing romance. Most of the drama comes from the characters misunderstanding each other, but it is resolved quickly.
Es el peor libro que je leido del año, absurdo a mas no poder, no solo que es un perico con una chica sino que hay poco desarrollo del romance entre ellos, mal mal- no creo volver a leer a esta autora.
There is a lot of internal monologue to wade through. Along with details about life in an alien planet and the politics involved. If you can get through all that, you will find a sweet story about two different souls finding themselves.
