Something Good

Rate this book
When three women find their lives inextricably linked after a terrible mistake, they must work together to make the most of their futures.

Alexis Marshall never meant to cause the accident that left Jon-Jon Robinson paralyzed—but though guilt plagues her, her husband hopes to put the past behind them. After all, he’s in the middle of selling a tech business—and if Alexis admits to texting while driving, the deal could collapse and cost them millions. Meanwhile, Alexis’s life is not as shiny and perfect as it may seem from the outside. She has secrets of her own. As she becomes consumed with thoughts of the young man she hit, can she reconcile her mistake with her husband’s expectations?

Trish Robinson is just trying to hold it together after the accident that left Jon-Jon dependent and depressed. As the bills pile up, Trish and her husband, Dwayne, find themselves at odds. Trish wants to forgive and move on, but Dwayne is filled with rage toward the entitled woman who altered their lives forever. Trish can’t see how anything good can come from so much hate and strife, so she determines to pray until God intervenes. Then one afternoon Marquita Lewis rings their doorbell with a baby in her arms and changes everything.

Vanessa Miller’s latest inspirational novel reminds readers that differences may separate us, but if we cling to each other, God can bring something good out of our very worst moments.

Vanessa Miller has a hit on her hands. She seamlessly weaves three different lives together and shows the reader that we all have a past, trials and tribulations we're going through, and that sometimes we have to look outside of ourselves to the blessings. Not only that but we can make the most unlikely friendships that only strengthen us and bolster us during difficult times. Definitely a must read.

I can't say enough about this book. Alexis' and Trish's story tugged at my heart. But Marquita had me hooked. She is a definite scene stealer!

A story of three women who find their lives intertwined after a terrible mistake. They must work together to make the most of their futures and the challenges before them.

Heads up! Something Good by Vanessa Miller is a Christian fiction book. It isn’t preachy in a “do this if you want to heal this kind of trauma” way, but rather it shares complicated lives of these families with plenty of mistakes. Nonetheless, it is an uplifting story about discovering the truth, second chances, faith and healing.

Right from the very beginning, the book has hooked me up. After reading the 50 pages, I have to recheck the synopsis of the book if I requested the right book. It has surprised me that this is in fact a Christian fiction book. It has a relatable story. Following each character’s story with every turn of the page is truly deep and strongly felt. It has made me laugh, and sometimes cry specifically in the middle of the story. The mother-daughter relationship has impacted me the most. The writing style of the author, Vanessa Miller, is simple and straightforward which has made the storyline beautiful. It has a powerful Christian message which is a great deal for a food of thought.

On other note, I like how well diverse this book is. The portrayal of the characters include people from a range of different social and racial backgrounds. It also addresses relevant issues like distracted driving, mental health, African-American community and dysfunctional family.

Although the near end of the book is slow paced for me, it has still shown full of hope and opportunities for growth. If you are interested to read the book, please allow yourself half a chance to open up your heart and soul while reading this because this kind of Christian fiction shares real-life scenarios.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you for this opportunity to read an ARC.

Good Women's Fiction novel!

Something Good shares the message of looking for the positive God can bring to every situation and having the courage to extend forgiveness. Spotlight on mental illness and the danger of texting while driving in the pages.

Nice introduction by a new to me author.

This was another sweet book by Vanessa Miller.

Miller always has strong Christian themes in her books! Honestly, I’d say the books I’ve read have someone either giving their life to Christ or the gospel being shared. So hats off to the author for making space for that in her books & not watering down the truth.

This story tackles topics like: mental health, distracted driving, marital issues, and death. You’ll see lots of redemption taking place and lots of forgiveness, too.

My favorite character was Trish. She really made the whole story enjoyable!

If you’re in the mood for a Christian read, you may enjoy this one!

“Trish saw God not just as her Jehovah-Raah—her Shepherd—but she also knew Him as Jehovah-Jireh—the Lord who provides. She truly needed God to be their provider. She needed Him to make a way out of no way.”

* Hats off to Thomas Nelson for publishing a book with high Christian morals! Seriously!

This book is so inspirational about three women whose lives intersect because of a horrible accident. This book is a reminder of God’s grace and love and the power of friendship. Even though they’re unlikely friends their bonds are strong.

This also takes place in Charlotte, North Carolina and was written by a local author!

I was in the library and saw Something Good by Vanessa Miller and immediately grabbed it. I had not read anything by her, but the cover grabbed me.

It took me a little bit to get into Something Good. I found the storyline compelling, and while we don't want to feel sorry for Alexis, I think we find her relatable, especially with being distracted while driving. Unfortunately, she has to live with the consequences of that decision.

I could not stand Marquita, especially at first, and I don't think we are supposed to. She is rude and feels entitled. However, once you learn a bit more about her, you can understand where she is coming from, even if you don't agree with it.

I also had a hard time relating to Trish. All three of these women are flawed and real. The author writes their story well, and the theme of forgiveness is strong.

A few things that didn't sit well with me. One was Trish being willing to forgive others quickly, but not her husband. The same could be said for Alexis as well. Another thing, the book is very stereotypical, and I found it harder to like it because of that. A few threads toward the end that bother me, but I will not mention them because I don't want to give spoilers.

Overall, I enjoyed and I am glad I read it.

Great story. Overall themes of mental health, distracted driving, and toxic relationships are topics that need more representation. Faith, prayer, and forgiveness were also very important. The only thing I didn’t like was the diction of the story. Sounded kind of juvenile

DNF - I couldn't get into this book. If you like high emotional books with frustratingly real to life characters, you'll probably enjoy this one. It was too much for me to handle at this time.

If you like Hallmark/Christian films, then you ‘ll love this. It touched on a lot of interesting subjects (race, inequality, mental illness, and more) it just didn’t do it for me.

Thank you to the author, Thomas Nelson and NetGalley, for a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Forgiveness and redemption are strong themes in this book, and the author can definitely write. The story flows and the different threads are woven together well, although the ending is OTT neatly tied up in a bow. Overall, I found it too saccharine for my taste and would not recommend it unless a heavy emphasis on evangelical Christianity is something you're happy with.

Great story but there were some choppy parts that took me a minute or two to unravel. When the accident occurs, I had no idea what had happened. Then it jumps to months later when the injured person's family start getting frustrated over delays. I liked the theme of forgiveness and how dysfunctional families need forgiveness much more than other people. It was refreshing that two marriages that could have fallen apart were able to thrive amidst great suffering. I also liked the connections between the families.

A tragic car accident brings three unlikely women together. While the story has themes pointing people to Jesus it was disappointing that it felt like the good God brought out of trials and tragedies was a lot of money, when the blessing that comes is a richer walk with God. It felt a bit like a stereotypical Christian movie where everything comes together perfectly.

One avoidable accident has altered the lives of so many people. Alexis Marshall caused an accident, which led to a spiral of events, including NFL hopeful Jon-Jon Robinson's paralysis, his parents Trish and Dwayne bumping heads over their finances, and Marquita Lewis showing up at their door…with a baby. When times got hard, Trish turned to the one thing she knew…prayer. Little by little, things began to fall into place and before long, the three women from three different walks of life, came together for one common good.

My favorite character was Trish and my least favorite character was Marquita's mother. I'm so glad she was rolling to accept the help that she so desperately needed. The mention of mental illness, shed light and provided tools of how to deal someone who may suffer from it. It's one I highly recommend.

This book by @authorvanessamiller will renew the readers faith. No matter what the situation may look like now, there are brighter days coming…if you just believe.

“Looking from her table to the next, Trish was once again amazed at the people who were now in her circle all because she called out to God in her darkest hour. Her eyes lifted heavenward. ‘God, You are a wonder worker.’” This book took me through a whirlwind of emotions. I found myself rooting for Trish, Alexis, and Marquita all at the same time at different parts of the story. I appreciated the fact that as the reader I felt like I was on a rollercoaster with each character as they uncovered new identities of who they are. This helped me to feel even more connected to the story because sometimes we can tend to think that we have it all together, but when everything comes crashing down and all we can do is lean on God, that’s when true victory is restored because we’re not leaning on our own strength, but instead on the only strength that can give us true peace…God’s strength.

I loved this book so much! It had all the things I love in a Christian fiction book: overcoming obstacles, clinging to faith in God and high quality storytelling.

I could not put this down, I was so captivated at the story and the twists and turns. A family finds themselves caring for their adult son after he is hit and left paralyzed by a distracted driver. Their faith to trust God to get through this trial was so encouraging! Some real issues are dealt with in this book: classism, mental illness, death, teen pregnancy and racism.

This book takes place in Charlotte, North Carolina which as an NC girl really connected with me as I was familiar with a lot of the references.

God ALWAYS works it for our GOOD

The power of prayer, beauty for ashes, and mental and racial issues being seen from the lens of humanity was so good. I really enjoyed this book. It was an absolute page turner, and I hated for it to end and how it ended kinda lol. It also convicted me about distracted driving, and for that, I am grateful. My first book by Vanessa Miller and I will be reading more.

This book follows the lives of 3 mothers living in Charlotte, NC who must deal with the consequences of 1 mothers actions. Throughout the story, the 3 are connected in major and minor ways but ultimately they develop a life changing and never ending friendship and love for one another. The author did a great job of making the story seem realistic and relatable. What I liked most was how the author tackled real life topics such as mental health, distracted driving, relationship building and broken dreams.
This book is definitely a page turner. If you have a book club or discussion group this book will foster conversations for sure. 10/10 highly recommend!

Women’s fiction and Christian fiction is not necessarily my thing. This was an enjoyable read, but not something. I would probably recommend it was fun because I did receive this as a gift and it was a mystery book so I really liked that aspect of it, but that has little to do with the book and more to do with, who gave it to me and why.

I really enjoyed reading this book! I always love when the story takes place in my city! The story is basically about bad situations that happened but unexpected good came out of them. And it stemmed from people making changes in their lives and realizing where they were in life was not the ending place. Vanessa Miller is a great writer. I plan to read a lot of her books!
