“The prospect of death is the thing that makes living so worthwhile.” This is one fabulous series! I was totally immersed and mesmerized from the beginning and I can’t get enough of these books! Action packed and gripping! This is an absolutely spellbinding story of intrigue, otherworldly situations, and a discovery of an ancient alien technology..A vibrant cast of characters, including some of the brightest minds and most unscrupulous characters! Danger and mystery of dimensional Metaverse, with realistic characters and believable situations that lead to mysterious and startling conclusions. A gripping read from start to finish. A highly recommended series!
Amen is caught in the Novia Minoosh universe with Ezo, Sootriman and TO96. Magnus is caught on Oorajee where he has come looking for any survivors of the ill fated peace talks. He has with him Valerie Stone and her daughter Piper. Then there is Admiral Kane who is being controlled by the entity Moldark. He has been building up his forces within the Republic with the aim of total control. We skip from viewpoint to viewpoint but it is very easy to follow. As with all of J.N. Chaney’s books there is plenty of action. You really need to read this series in order but you won’t be disappointed!
This was an excellent sequel and did a lot to move the story forward, while leaving plenty to resolve in the coming books. The story takes place from multiple points of view, with each having its own feel and vibe. I personally really enjoyed both Magnus and the sentient robot, TO-96 the most. Tons of action, with some real moments of heroism and drama. Excellent all around.
Book two in this series. Republic Marine Recon Lieutenant Magnus has been stranded on an alien planet. They are enemies of the Republic. He has crash landed on the planet with a Republican Senator, his wife and daughter. The senator was killed in the landing. They have been captured by and alien force and taken prisoner. The warlord knows of LT. Magnus from a prior encounter and respects him. Magnus helped someone the warlord respects like family. From this prior encounter he agrees to help Magnus locate and rescue Marines taken prisoner from another warring clan on this planet. Slowly through battles they have fought in their respect for each other grows. Brothers in arms. Friends. This is an amazing read full of action, intrigue it has it all! Enjoyed immensely!
I'm starting to like these characters a lot! Chaney has expanded the entertainment factor with Ezo and Abimbola. Lots of great action! I did see a bit of a correlation between Ezo and TO-96 and Han Solo and the Star Wars droids. It's different, but alike enough to feel the reference. Still, this has plenty going on.
One thing that did bog me down was all the stuff with Admiral Kane and the whole Moldark situation. I hoped we'd get past that in a hurry and thankfully we did. It's an interesting take on a bad guy, but I just didn't enjoy his scenes. I guess as bad guys go, he's at least somewhat an entertaining one.
I'm looking forward to the next book. Unfortunately, the audiobooks are coming out slowly, probably because RC Bray is so busy! He's worth the wait though. If they changed narrators I'd just give up. Wise choice, Mr. Chaney!
For the second book in a row, my favorite part was the authors note. I find him more honest and likable and interesting than (their) characters - which is not to say that I don’t like them. They just aren’t fully three dimensional. I gave the first book 4 stars and this book 3 because 3.5 isn’t available. Both are equitable. I found it “just” entertaining enough to keep reading, or in this case, listening. RC Bray is a legend. I will probably return to the next book at some point in the future, but there is nothing pulling me there the way a better story, or better characters, or just great writing will do when traversing a series. So again, this is not to say that any of these aspects are bad... I think maybe it’s missing original cannon, or excellence in a particular aspect of writing. Something that gives it a little more separation from being “just another okay military SF - more than just the word splick”.
I hope this review isn’t a too much a discouragement to readers or to the authors and that we all root for the implementation of Kai Zen (continuous improvement).
Less intrigue, more action, more story progression Down to just 2 main threads, rather than the 4 or 5 is book one and so much better as a result Magnus fights his way through one tribe and Awen manages to discover secrets that are obviously going to help as the conflict progresses Looking forward to book 3
This is quickly becoming one of my favourite series. I originally thought I'd test out the audiobook inbetween some of the regular books and audiobooks I listen to.
The author does a great job of world building. Great character development and easy to follow along.
And the story continues at a blistering pace of high-octane action and interesting twists and turns. It is obvious it is heading for a spectacular crescendo. I am right now moving quickly to the next installment. Well done Christopher Hopper and J.N. Chaney. Again, you OTF.
I truly enjoyed this book. The plot is becoming so twisty and intriguing! The characters are so well written and interesting. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Ruins of the Galaxy was a pure Masterclass in the Mil Sci-Fi genre, with exceptional characters, providing gritty, powerful and detailed stories of the 79th Recon Republic Marines attempt to get their asset to a meeting with one of the most feared species in the Galaxy for peace talks, and the extraordinary events that followed when these talks are decimated by multiple terrorist bombs. Galactic Breach, part 2 in the series, had a lot to live up to as the sequel to one of the best Mil Sci-Fi books of 2019, and it does this easily, being just as outstanding, if not better than the original story. At the end of Ruins, the story arc had split into two main streams, and this continues in Galactic Breach. We start by following Magnus, still technically a Lt with the 79th Recon, even though he has bio-tech eyes, as he has not been formally removed yet. Magnus somehow not only managed to survive the events in the Mwadim’s tower, but also kept Awen alive, and together the two of them escaped Oorajee, thanks in kind to a warlord known as Abimbola, who had a debt to Awen’s family. He organised transport with a ‘Scoundrel’ (I can only think of a type of Lando Calrissian type character when I think of Idris Ezo…), for Awen’s escape and return to Worru, where she was to be debriefed about the events on the Jujari homeworld. Without giving too much away, Magnus ends up back on Oorajee, going to find the rest of his team, as there is intel that they are still alive. With little to no support, he turns to the one person he knows will help him, and can get the job done, and one of the best characters in this series Abimbola!! I don’t want to go into too much detail about this section of the story, as I don’t want to ruin it for anyone, but needless to say, when Magnus and Abimbola join forces, hell hath no fury like an enemy scorned!! What follows is some of the BEST action sequences I have every read, from chapter to chapter, you are seriously just glued to the page as they fight to achieve their goals. The descriptive writing is just so intense, you not only feel like you are running, sitting or flying along with them, but that you can smell the burning flesh of dead enemies, the ozone of the weapons, and feel the heat coming from over-worked weapons. It is gritty and powerful, and whilst it is obviously ‘Sci-Fi’, it is written so well that it has a very strong realistic feel to it. The Authors have provided real depth in their portrayal of these scenes, showing the brutal truth of close combat warfare with a race of incredibly powerful canine creatures from the depths of hell. If you want to read a truly masterful bit of combat writing – go no further. On the other side of the coin, we have Awen, Ezo, Sootriman and T0-96 who are through the looking glass so to speak, having jumped through the wormhole to the other Galaxy in hopes of finding something special. They have indeed found something special, a very old and amazing city, that has unfortunately been abandoned for centuries, the inhabitants, long dead, or maybe evolved into a higher life form. For now, at the start of this book, this leaves our intrepid explorers trapped on the other side of a wormhole with no way to get home. What is worse is, there is a hostile force that has followed them, that wants them dead so that they can’t tell anyone about what they have discovered. The complexity and sheer detail of the world-building that has gone into creating not just this particular piece of the story (which in itself is just totally mind-blowing), but all the different aspects of the story, from the Jujari, to the Luma, (Sure, everyone has pretty little space marines – but not as cool as Magnus), but the attention to detail, and the quality and meticulous nature of the story writing is just extraordinary. It really gives the story a whole extra level, above and beyond what you normally expect with this sort of story, and makes it that much more enjoyable. Supporting all of this, is some exceptional character writing, both in the Main Characters Awen and Magnus, but also all the secondary characters. Abimbola is just extraordinary, so much fun, and yet so serious, especially when it comes to his men. He is very lighthearted, unless you insult his work ethic, or something else he holds dear, then look out, otherwise, he is just a full on laugh, adding a comical element to a book that could easily get too serious or lost in combat sequences. Ezo is similar, but has Sootriman to keep him honest. The character development, in this book and series is clever, creative and makes for captivating reading, they are just enthralling Overall, this is just an incredible book, from the quality of the characters, to the depth of detail, and the raw, gritty and superb battle scenes that leave you slack-jawed, and in some cases, re-reading them as you are not sure you read it right the first time round. This will be a series that is remembered for a long time, make sure you have read (or listened) to it, as you will not be disappointed.
Back to a very entertaining series written by one of my better authors. Last time we left Lieutenant Magnus, he was blinded by a Republic surface strike from space. He was definitely too close and the sudden blinding light ruined what eyesight he had. But, with the direct intervention of Dr. Valerie Stone, the wife of the former Senator Stone, he now has a new pair of bioteknia eyes. At least he could still see, but with these new artificial eyes came the end of his Republic Marine career. Well, he still had a mission to do and until he was officially discharged, he was going to see it through.
He knew that some of his original crew had been taken captive by the Jujari after the bombing at the mwadim’s palace tower. His new mission was to rescue those guys and get off the planet with Valerie and her nine year old daughter, Piper. Of course he was going to need some help and he got that, surprisingly and readily, from Abimbola, the Marauder Warlord who had already done more for Magnus than he thought possible. Additionally, Abimbola had some kind of alliance with the Twanhack Jujari and their Warlord, Rohoar, and he also volunteered some of his troops only so they could kill other Jujari from another tribe. So, it looked like the rescue was on, but it definitely wasn’t going to be easy.
Meanwhile, in the space above the planet, a crazy Republic Admiral named Kane was quickly going mad. He seems to have been taken over by some kind of alien parasite. It was now coming to the front of his personality and almost in complete control. He even told his subordinates to stop calling him Admiral Kane since his name was Moldark! After killing several of his high ranking officers in the fleet, he finally got the point across that he was now in command of the former Republic Third Fleet, but they weren’t going to fight for the Republic any more. He also started getting called Lord Moldark which suited this alien presence even better. Third Fleet, under the command of Moldark has begun attacking the Jujari fleets and has started a full-scale war. The other Republic fleets don’t know what’s going on or why Third fleet so suddenly began firing on everyone.
And then there’s Awen, TO-96, Ezo and Sootriman. They were stranded on a Novia Minoosh planet in another galaxy with no way to return home. They have searched the capital city as much as three people and one robot can without much luck. Everything is over grown and centuries old. Of course nothing really works and they are running out of food and fresh water. Awen has not gone back into the Unity since her last encounter with the then Admiral Kane and his alien parasite. She was so scared of that presence that it has shaken her ability to go back into the Unity. Ezo and Sootriman are of the opinion that if Awen could go back into the Unity, she might be able to see something of the Novia Minoosh they they are missing. So, evenutally, Awen faces her fears and attempts to go back into the Uinity. She succeeded and was frightened even more, but also pushed past that and did in fact find something that just might help her and her friends to get home.
As you can read, we have three threads here that will some day, I guess, merge in some way. Right now, Awen is far, far from Lt Magnus while the evil Moldark is just above him fighting a space battle. It’s going to be interesting to see how these three threads do intersect. Lt Magnus has got to some how get off the planet, but he doesn’t have much to work with, or does he?
Great series and I’m already to read the next book, “Gateway to War”.
I did enjoy this book. I feel that over all it was a good continuation of the story. I like how the central characters were growing. And once again the main plot points were more or less rapped up while at the same time moving it towards the next book.
That said, there were two issues I had with the book. First was that I felt it was a little slow to get started. I would say that I was 30 to 40% into the book before it really picked up. With the second book in the series (and one that was released as close the the release of the first book) I felt like it should have picked up more or less where the other one left off. But once things did pick up they stayed fast paced for the rest of the book. The second half of the book was well paced and I felt the chapter breaks were good. It was just the first part that kind of dragged for me.
The other thing that I was not a big fan of was how Magnus was portrayed. For the most part I really like this character. He has a strong sense of honor and always tries to do the right thing. He also knows what his role in things is as a soldier. He knows that there are some hard choices that he has to make from time to time and is willing to make them and live with the consequences.
All that said, there is a little bit of "boys being boys" kind of things going on. It is clear, to me at least, that the authors are setting him up for a relationship with one of the other characters he has encountered. I mean it is telegraphed really hard. But, at the same time, he encounters another woman that is described as the most beautiful woman that he has ever seen. When he is around her it is clear that he is really turned on by her. Maybe I should say that he is attracted to her, but I get the feeling that it is more physical than emotional. (For full transparency, I hate love triangles. Unfaithfulness in characters is a real turn off form me in books. I know that he is not in a relationship with anyone and there has not even been talk between him and the other character to indicate that they have any kind of understanding, but this is getting close to territory that I don't like in my books.) The feeling I get is that we are supposed to just take this as he is a red blooded heterosexual male around a gorgeous woman and what he is feeling is just natural. The problem is that I don't buy that. He does not react this way around any other women that he encounters. The one that he really has a thing for, it is only now that they are separated that he keeps thinking about her. I don't like this idea that it is excusable for men to not be able to control their thoughts and feelings around attractive women. I feel that if Magnus was really as honorable as we are lead to believe that he is, then he would be better than that. I want him to be better than that.
I will get off my soap box now....
Honestly, these two issues are not that bad. Because of this I give the book 4.5/5.

After my review of the first book and its 3 1/2 stars rating for the ton of Star Wars themed flashes going off in my head as I read it -- I have to say the 2nd book, this book, is a clear 5-star book. I really like the character development the author has going on. And I actually like the descriptions of the places and scenes he does. And I really enjoy the hyena-like pack race as well.
Hard finding good Military Sci-Fi series, but this is for sure one of them. I've already pre-ordered the 3rd book.
A JNC./CH. SYFY. Deep Space Adventure (GB) (AMSE) (ROTGB -2)
JNC. And CH. have collaborated on writing a SYFY. deep space action adventure, which begins with a deployment to a different galaxy and dropping a Marine detachment into an new planet that is supposed to be uninhabited. Wrong. The Marines immediately come under attack and are in the fight of their lives. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
