Archivist #2

Compelling Infinity

Rate this book
I was a dragon. Dragons didn’t run from any situation. Not even a dragon disguised as a witch. Well … at least not from any situation that involved the archive or my duty, because apparently I fled before anything even remotely personal. Including surprise double dates.

A masked gala. A solstice celebration with the werewolves. Broken relics and doorways leading not only to other realms, other mythical and magical creatures, but to other possible futures. For me. And maybe even for Kellan.
And, well … that’s all just another day at the office for me.
Though my witch disguise really wasn’t going to hold up for much longer. Because even though I’d accepted my role as head curator at the magical archive of the National Museum of Ireland, and all the duties that came with being the Archivist of the Modern World, apparently I didn’t like the restrictions that came along with that. Because I couldn’t build the life I truly wanted — the dream unfurling in the dark chambers of my heart — on lies and half-truths.
Which meant that a moment was looming when I’d be faced with a choice that I couldn’t bear to walk away from. A choice that I might be willing to lose everything else to obtain.

Compelling Infinity is the second book in the Archivist series, which is set in the same universe as the Dowser, Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. While it is not necessary to read all the series, in order to avoid spoilers the ideal reading order of the Adept Universe begins with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1).

I absolutely loved book 1 in this series, but the second book fell a bit flat for me. It was okay, but nothing like how much I enjoyed the first.

I feel like it took a really long time for this book to actually get going. The first half of the book was almost completely about Dusk's angst: about who she is, about her relationship and having to lie to all the people in Ireland she's come to care about, that she wants to have a relationship with Kellen but feels like she can't, about her responsibility for Sisu and whether she's messing it up . . . On and on and on with Dusk's emotional dramas. This Dusk bore absolutely no resemblance to the kick-ass heroine I adored in the first book. This Dusk was more reminiscent of your whiniest friend who always wants to just tell you about all her problems every single time you get together. I found it tiresome.

The book did eventually get back to action and magical mayhem and exciting stuff, but even that felt more sad and a little depressing rather than the exciting engrossing drama from the first book.

It almost feels like this book is from a completely different series. I imagine lots of people will really enjoy this. I think this will be it for me for this series. I will go back to this author's other series, which I also enjoyed the first book of, in hopes of a better story fit for me with that one.

Another excellent read

Yet another excellent book in this series. From start to finish this author captures your attention in a story of werewolves, dragons, witches and intrigue. The world building is outstanding and the storyline fast paced and action packed making it hard to put down. Highly recommend.

Wow, Wonderful!

I loved this book! It has unique world building, wonderful characters, secrets, romance, mystery, danger and adventure. I especially loved the storyline of Dusk reaching her potential and her struggle to keep her identity secret and her magic dampened. Meghan Ciana Doidge has surpassed herself in this story of female empowerment and emotional risk. I can’t wait to read the next book in the Archivist series.

I'm officially addicted to these books - why aren't there more yet?!? I finished this one in 1 day, quickly flipping digital pages to see what happened to Dusk next.

We pick up with Dusk 2 months after we last saw here, effectively managing her first week at work. Now that she's settled in and people have either ignored her inability to pretend to be a witch, or chosen to keep her secret, she's managed to become the archivist she's wanted to be. The only lacking is in the follow-through from Kellan for the sizzling chemistry from book 1. This book continues a nice slow burn, but I need some serious fire between these two! Dusk and Sisu have settled into a nice (but weird) house now, and they have a certain routine. That routine sort of involves things going wrong, so that's to be expected now.

This time the badness is around a bit of brownie, fae, and coercion magic. While the mystery pretty much solves itself and you will most likely guess the culprit right out of the gate, it was great watching Dusk be the best archivist she can be, hunting down and containing things, no matter the cost. She and Sisu are just the best and I was sad to put the book down at the end, knowing I would have to wait to spend more time with them. Even Morgan grew on me in this book!

This is the second book in the Archivist series and it just keeps getting better. I couldn't put it down. Dusk continues to leap into danger but she is learning to rely on those around her. Especially the tempting Kellan Conall, who says things like "You try to hide your golden glow, but I see it between the cracks." She is slowly accepting the Adepts that surround her as friends as she interacts with them in less formal situations. I really enjoyed seeing the less serious side of the pack during the Solstice celebration. Sisu, Neve, and Lile keep everything fun and the adults on their toes. That trio is fearless! It is always interesting to follow Dusk as she tracks down a mystery. Meghan's description of Evenfall are so vivid that I could see it all. Dusk and Kellan's true power manifesting was awesome. I can't wait for the next installment. Maybe Drake will show back up for more training!

Doidge's books, which I discovered the first week of the pandemic shut down, helped me survive all of the turmoil of the last few years. I immersed myself in her world, but alas, it was over too fast. I excitedly await any new releases. Be warned, even though this is listed as the second book, you truly need to read these books in the author recommended order (can be found on her website or in the front of every book) which includes several intertwined other series set in the same world. Admittingly, this isn't my favorite subset series in the world, but it's still great. If you like your urban fantasy with a mix or delicious baked goods, slow burn romance, and gruesome beheadings, this is the series for you!

just another romance novel

This was horrible. The first 60% of the book is the MC swooning over this dude. To make it worst there was no action or magic use. Just a bunch of romantic underpinnings and pining. As annoying as it is that authors (female and male alike) seem to believe that a strong female character has to be offset with some guy (who is usually overbearing and not actually all that attractive), the first book at least had the romance an subplot and used as character development device. That’s not the case this go round and it ruined what seemed like a potentially interesting series. Why can’t a female lead just be strong and not find a guy overtly alluring . These strong beings just lose all sense of self and agency.

Phenomenal!

Dusk and Sisu's lives are getting more complicated, as they settle into life in Dublin.

Dusk is attending a masked ball, in the Archives, that her and the crew have put together.

She gets a feeling about one of the guests and she doesn't like it.

A Brownie appears to her, she doesn't look good.

The weird man seems to insert himself into Dusks life.

Kellan is looking mighty fine!

At a Pack get together, Sisu and the twins, stumble on something wondrous, that could have bad consequences, till Dusk closes a door.

A death at Dusks hand.

Beautifully written, with fantastic characters. Can't wait for the next book 😏😉

absolutely Love this book

I love all of Meghan Ciana Doidge books !!! This one is definitely one of my favorites. Their are so many relationships that evolve in this book. Dusk is learning so much about who she Is and how strong she can be . Kellan
Is amazing!!!! I love how Dusk and Morgan seem to toy with one another yet are discovering who the other one is. Sisu is ornery and definitely plays a bigger role in this one. I did not want to put it down. I was not ready for it to be over . I will be eagerly awaiting more of Dusk , Sisu and Kellan. I also hope we see more of Morgan and Sparkle .

This book was a serious let down compared to the first. Like other readers have pointed out, it seems as though Dusk has regressed as a character rather than developed. Most of the book is a monologue of her second guessing herself and whining about her situation. Nothing actually exciting happens to nearly the end of the book, and even that was short lived. Funny how she keeps stating that she’s a dragon, and doesn’t shift into one when entering the other dimension even though other characters do shift into their true forms.

I have fallen for Dusk, Sisu, and Kellan.

It starts with Dusk holding a fundraising event that attracts the attention of an evil fae. The magical archive of Dublin is raising money by holding a fundraiser and inviting all the magical adepts and she meets a historian who wants to tell the story of a fated couple. And after meeting Brandon Prince she realizes . it's a great story and I love all the main characters. Please let the next book be available soon.

Outstanding, as always

Another exceptional masterpiece! I love this
series so much! I so admire Dusk's power, kindness and strength, as well as her endearing love for Sisu. The basement of the Cathedral and entering into the realm of Evenfall had my heart racing! I can't wait to see the growing relationship of Dusk and Kellan, and the exciting changes of Infinity! Bravo Meghan Ciana Doidge! Bravo!😍

Just gets better

Every single series MCD writes is amazing & compelling, though I have a favorite. This one is a close rival. Every chapter gets better than the last. I'm so curious as to origin of the unusual genetic anomaly that is in the Conall line. Though I'm impatient for the next, I also enjoy the delayed gratification so it doesn't end quite yet. I'm still feeling some kinda way after my favorite, even months/years after...She's just so dang good.

It just doesn't get better than this

Once again Meghan Ciana Doidge has given us a joyous look into a world of magic and wonder that you never knew existed. The characters work their way into your heart and remain there long after the last page is read. I felt a sadness when this book ended because I wasn't ready to stay goodbye. Your only solution is to go down the list and read each of her other books, again and again while eagerly waiting the newest book to come.

Meghan's books can always be relied on to be well worth the read! The characters and world-building are excellent, and I really enjoyed the storyline. Magic, mystery, romance, and Danger. What more could you ask for! If I were you, I'd start with either the first Archivist book (Awakening infinity), or even better, start with Dowser 1: Cupcakes, Trinkets, and other deadly magic (it's free on Kobo usually!), and read all the books set in this universe!

This author never disappoints! I often put off beginning a book because I know once I begin I will read straight through. I usually read her books at least three times each. Yeah I enjoy them that much. The archivists was not one that I thought I would become enthralled in. I was wrong. I am a avid reader but certainly not prone to remember details or be orderly so I didn't think I could identify with this personality type. Meghan made her totally relatable. Well done, AGAIN!

While juggling magical relics, sketchy doorways, and a baby dragon brother who’s growing sassier by the page, Dusk also has to figure out who she is beyond her Archivist title. There’s mystery, magical drama, some emotional gut-punches, and even a little flirting in the shadows.

This book turns up the intensity, adds a splash of glamour, and still gives you all the dragon chaos and sharp banter you loved in book one.

As usual, wonderful

I am so glad I discovered Meghan Ciana Doidge. Each book just makes me wish the next one was ready. With some multi-series worlds, it's frustrating to switch main characters - not this one! Each MC is wonderful and their story is unique and separate, but tied in with just enough connection to keep things interesting.

I love this series and this author. I am familiar enough with her work to know that she's not going to give a quick instant love romance. Dusk is a fascinating young woman who is undercover as a witch. Kellan is a wolf shifter that appears to be more. They complement each other in spite of their differences. There's intrigue and mystery and plenty of adventure.

I love this ever expanding world

A great installment. Ms Doidge’s books are always a satisfying read. I come back to them again and again. The Archivist books stand independent of other books in the world though favorite characters appear in tertiary roles occasionally. I can’t wait to see where it goes.

Unusual...delightful

These last two books are just SO good, and showcase the author's deep well of creativity and expansive range. Although these books are set in the same universe as those previous in this body of work, they are in no way derivative. It might sound odd, but I feel honored to be a fan and look forward to continuing to be so for as long as she is writing.

Since our main character has struggled so much with wanting to share herself with someone, I think this book has definitely moved things along to setting the scene for other books. I like the house coming alive and that our sister and little brother are building people that care for them in their lives. Can't wait for the next installment!

This new novel is much more romantic in tone than the previous ones, which, although predictable, gave it an excessive prominence.
The magical universe continues and the characters are becoming better defined, each in their own role.
It is an entertaining and enjoyable novel, perhaps a little cloying.

Fantastic!

Meghan Ciana Doidge delivers once more! I didn't want to start this book because then I would have to finish it. Oh well, reread it is! I love Dusk and Sisu, their relationship is just so warm and real. I can't wait for the next one.

Sigh of contentment and regret … so sad it’s over. It was great! I love Dusk and the whole ensemble. It’s very satisfying to witness the characters grow and the relationships flourish. Love, love, love the story.

Dusk

True love? Fated love? Mates. Soulmates? Fae? What's true and what's a fairy story? Dusk wonders and comes to grips with hard truths. Familial bonds are strong but is blood stronger then magic?
