Torchbearer: Dungeoneer's Handbook

Rate this book
Adventurer is a dirty word in these lands. You're a scoundrel, sword-for-hire, villain, wastrel, criminal, a cutthroat...

You've come to this place because you have no other options but to make your own fortune in a world that shuns and fears you. There's naught for you in this world save blood and treasure: no inheritance, no dowry, no place on the farm, not even a job. A life of adventure is all you've got. If that means delving into ruins of a long dead civilization and slaying a dragon or two, so be it. At least you'll live it up before the end. And who knows? Maybe you'll score big and carve out a stronghold of light against the vast, weird dark after all.

The Dungeoneer's Handbook contains everything necessary to describe your scabrous vagabonds in Torchbearer: how to make them, their abilities, nature, wises, traits, skills, inventory, magic, advancements, and level benefits. All of these can be found within. This book also contains reference lists of gear, skills, traits, spells, and invocations for your edification.

Part 1 of 3 of my Torchbearer and set and the beginning of the end (I think) of the variations for Burning Wheel. I have been so charmed by all of them, each of them immediately evoking a campaign in my mind. Torchbearer is appealing because as someone who occasionally finds 5e's loftiness and superheroism toothless, its compelling to see a game where adventures really live in the dirt and grime.

The way the Torchbearer 2e rules are split up makes sense on paper but both books, in practice, are often needed in tangent. This volume contains reference materials such as character creation info, skills, and spells & their rules. The reason for my high rating is the writing style of the texts. They are written in an engaging manner and have a distinct voice whilst maintaining clarity. Reading through these volumes easily entertains and cements the book's structure to memory.

Much more coherent reading the Scholar's Guide and then this book, and not the other way around.
