Severus/Hermione Snape stood before her, tall and menacing, unbuttoning his shirt, and she just couldn't keep her eyes away, her gaze was glued to his form. The unbuttoning felt like a countdown to something she didn't want to experience: Twelve – eleven – ten – nine …
Her heart fluttered in her chest, fearfully. What would it be like?
Shrugging off his shirt, he stopped, looking searchingly at her. "Granger," his deep voice oddly hesitant, "you've done this before, right?" ___
Set in the sixth year, Hermione and Professor Snape find themselves victims to the Marriage Law, rushed into a marriage for safety reasons.
(2.5 stars rounded up to 3) I liked most of it, but right when I got to chapter 10 it just when blah. I don't know why, but it did. Not the best, but it was entertaining. It had a shit ton of angst and whenever I read Severus' pov chapters; it was just filled with self-loathing, which I get but can get on your nerves. It was okay, had some moments and had dark themes regarding the revels and the death eaters and overall dark shit that happens in wars. I like the whole marriage of convenience/marriage law au's and tropes, but it seemed like this one didn't have other characters besides Severus and Hermione getting married, which sucked. Though I did like some bits and pieces we got of Draco pinning after Ginny. I think Severus and Hermione really held this story up and their interactions---trying to navigate their new marital status, though I wish she wasn't a student. This story probably would've been better if this idea was set in a canon divergence, like if the final battle didn't happen for a few years after the trio went on the run, therefore giving Hermione some independence and she's not Severus's student, and the author could've written more stuff happening around the war that they were trying to do in what was Hermione's supposedly 6th year. Other than that, I enjoyed the story, and it provided me with some weekend entertainment as I avoid life.
Here are some highlights:
Those black eyes bored into hers, pressing a message into her mind: "Oh my sweet Hermione, this will be awkward. Awkward for years and years to come." (Chapter 12)
"Whaaat!?" the old witch screeched, her face flushed with anger. Minerva McGonagall rose from her chair, much like Hermione had done, he thought with amusement, and pointed a bony finger in the direction of the Headmaster.
"You were going to let us all believe Severus was a traitor! You fucking, manipulative scunner, you stinking bawbag, Albus!"
He blinked at the colourful Scottish swear words, and his little wife looked at her enraged Professor with fascination, no doubt committing them to memory to check up on the definition at some point later.
"No, really, Minerva," Albus said, looking hurt. "I only meant to…"
"Well, thank the gods for your scheme being disclosed, you bampot!" the witch shrieked, "now we can start some real planning that isn't all about fantasies in your daft head!" (Chapter 10)
After reading Doing it for the Order (which is a Snape & Hermione couple) I really wanted to read another fanfic with the same couple. This book embodies its title from the get-go. What, for me, kept this book back from a four (or even five) star book for me was due to Severus being so closed off, angry, and always assuming that people (especially Hermoine) thinks the worst of him... which was sad. And at the same time it made me mad at Severus because he would take that anger out (physically) on Hermoine. So, yes, this book does contain dub-con and non-con. If you can't take that- then you will not enjoy this book.
