This is absolutely amazing, it’s gut wrenching, toe curling, it makes you uncomfortable but in a good way.

If you aren’t fond of reading about heavy topics then don’t read this, this is a PSYCHOLOGICAL BL. And yes it’s so fucked up but it’s so beautiful.

The plot is amazing, the characters are amazing, especially the ML. When characters in manwha are marked as “psychopath” the only traits that pops up is “obsessive and possessive” but in a more violent way. Red flags typically but this manwha delves in the actual medical traits of a psychopath.

Their relationship is sorta toxic, the whole story is toxic but to differ it from other manwhas that has a “psychopath ML” I would say this is one of the healthiest, they genuinly communicate with one another even though they don’t see eye to eye, they compromise to suit both their needs.

For what it is I’d say it’s very realistic in the most fictional way, if you know what I mean?

Their relationship could be more fucked up to keep the plot entertaining but no its viewed more as a realistic relationship.

Ps. The side stories will FUCK you up.

„The Beast Must Die“ ist mir schon vor seinem Erscheinen aufgefallen.

Man lernt beide kaum kennen.

*seufz*

1st things 1st, I'm using this to review the entire manhwa. I didn't read this German version but the actual comic itself.

The story follows Kirin Lee, who wants to seek revenge against members of this secret club who gangraped his younger sister and she ended up taking her life - all this happened during his time in the military. He approaches Kang Moo - the only known member of this club - and asks him to introduce him to the club. Kang Moo says yes but only if the two get to say that they are partners. Kirin agrees, the introduction happens and because the members of this club are basically rich sadistic little monsters, things sorta go left.

When I think about it, I think this might be the only manhwa I've read that (1) Involves sexual violence (2) has a psychotic violent top, that I've given 5 stars. For several reasons

There will be minor spoilers from here on out

🎀 The main reason here is that the top, Kang Moo, doesn't go around being mean, violent and rapey towards the bottom. Listen, if you read enough manhwas on the darker side, you take what you can get okay? Some manhwas out here are just... The tops should be in prison, castrated and awaiting the electric chair. That's all I'm saying

Is Kang Moo an all round green flag? Fuck no! The 1st sex scene was uncomfortable to read, but there's more nuance to it. Also, our top here is a diagnosed psychopath (with a 38/40 score on the pcl-r test). Not only is he obsessed with death, the preservation of death, has innate desire to kill, but he's also extremely manipulative and controlling - not only to Kirin, but almost everyone around him. He's definitely not a green flag. But, he never goes out of his to hurt Kirin.

🎀 I loved the doubts and conversations that Kirin had with himself, not only about his sexuality, but also the feeling of emasculation because he was the bottom in the relationship.

See, the 1st time Kirin ever had sex with a man was with Kang Moo during the initiation to the club. It wasn't planned and ordinarily, he wouldn't have done it, but he needed to get into the club to find who hurt his sister - so he did it.

The 2nd time, he begged Kang Moo to give him a hand job and wished for him to fuck him - but he'd been drugged by some assholes, so this doesn't particularly count. The 3rd time, however, he was a very willing and enthusiastic participant. And for every time after that, he wanted it. He enjoyed it. Craved it even. For a man who'd never been attracted to men b4 you can only imagine how this fucked with his brain.

As if this wasn't bad enough, Kirin was the bottom in the relationship. This always made him feel emasculated. Not once is it shown that he thinks of himself as a woman - something that he's not happy about. After all, men are supposed to be the dominant ones in a sexual situation (so society says🙄) , so having another man on top and inside him, makes him feel emasculated. He almost always felt humiliated after they were done.

I appreciated seeing him struggle with this. There are a lot of 'gay for you' books, manga and manhwas, etc. out here but I don't recall any that tried bringing up this situation. It's always "Huh! I was straight b4 but now I like a man and enjoy fucking a man. Cool. Moving on..."

🎀 How do you love a psychopath? How do you trust that one day he shan't kill you? How do you know that he loves or at least like you enough to keep you around, when we know that psychopaths can't love? How do you as a person with a moral compass live with a murderer? How do you keep him from killing and what do you do when he finally snaps and kills?

I think in season 2, Kang Moo admits that having sex with Kirin does calm the beast,- the psychopath inside him. It keeps the desire to kill at bay because a side of him knows that if he went on a killing spree, Kirin would leave him. And he doesn't want that. However, in sweet bitter, we are shown that, the beast will sometimes break through and Kang Moo will end up killing. Sure, he kills the bad dudes in society, but it's still murder and he relishes it. It's not easy to deal with or rationalize no matter how hard you try.

Throughout the story, we also see how controlling Kang Moo is. Dude puts a tracker on Kirin within days of knowing him. And he freaks out badly if the tracker goes off and Kirin doesn't pick up the phone. I don't think any normal person would enjoy such a thing.

Something that I found rather interesting, is how desperate Kang Moo is to not only know where Kirin is, but to always have him by his side. In the 2nd (?) side story, one of Kirin's friends states that while Kang Moo seems to have it all - he's rich, smart, and gorgeous - he always seems a bit desperate to have Kirin by his side. This made me wonder why

Psychopaths can't love so at best, Kang Moo sees Kirin as a possession (his possession and attempts at control are seen throughout the story). A prized possession, but a possession nonetheless. He doesn't want to lose him but he knows that if something happens, he'll miss him for a while, but he'll eventually get over it. So why was he always so desperate to have him by his side?

Sure the sex was great - the 1st time they did it was the 1st time he felt alive in a long while, but the sex no matter how good, doesn't beat the euphoria of killing someone. So was it a fear of loneliness? At some point in the story it's mentioned how Kang Moo always felt lonely. He had to always have a mask to hide his psychopathic self, but Kirin knows it, has seen it and chooses to stay by his side

Random side note, how did the German publishers break this up into 10 whole volumes? From what I understand - Season 1 covers chapters 1 to 36, Season 2 - 37 to 60 (which is where the official story ends). Then two side stories covering chapters 61 to 73 and 74 to 79, respectively. And finally, the side track, aptly named Sweet Bitter that covers chapters 80 to 88. How did this become 10🤔?

Was genau, müsst ihr selbst herausfinden.
Also ich zumindest.

Fascinating, disturbing, and deeply sensual, this story explores violence and the human condition in a way I have never seen before in the BL genre. The artwork is breathtaking and the sex scenes are incredibly intense. But the thing that sets this BL apart is the character development and the way the story unfolds. In every chapter new information is presented that alters your perspective of what came before. Simply Thrilling, you won't be able to look away!

***Spoilers thoughts***
I felt that the most valuable asset to this story was in some ways also its Achilles heel. (last chance spoilers ahead) That would be Kang Moo being a criminal psychopath, while psychopathy is a spectrum it is communicated that Kang Moo has "no emotions." In many ways this is the story's most invaluable asset because when characters do not act on their emotions it is impossible for the audience to anticipate their actions, thus making the story incredibly intriguing. However, despite the murder and intrigue at the heart of The Beast Must Die is a "romance" between Kang Moo and Lee Kirin. We are shown on several occasions that Lee Kirin is deeply emotionally attached to Kang Moo. But Kang Moo states that he is a psychopath and has no emotions, any time he shows concern it is him displaying his "learned behavior." This is where things began to get vague for me. It was hard to truly enjoy their relationship when Lee Kirin clearly wants to be with him and loves Kang Moo, while Kang Moo is not able to feel anything. But there have been several examples throughout the story of Kang Moo acting in ways that were not logical or would not benefit him purely because Lee Kirin was involved. So here's the rub, we are asked to accept that Kang Moo feels nothing for Lee Kirin but also that he will make choices based on emotional responses to Lee Kirin.
I loved this story and it will forever be on my top 10. However, I wish that their relationship was not left so ambiguous. It is clear that they are going to be together for the rest of their lives, and I'm not saying that the author should have included an "I love you" moment between the two of them because that just wouldn't have fit. But I feel that there should have been a clear moment when Kang moo communicated to Lee Kirin that he favored him in some emotional way, and for Lee Kirin to accept those feeling and reciprocate. These are of course my own thoughts and opinions in any case I loved it! Thank you to the author!

4.2 ⭐️

Actually loved this.

After a woman is assaulted by men in a distinguished and elite club, she commits suicide when the case is dropped. Her brother tracks down a member of the club and worms his way in, seeking revenge and facing humiliating trials along the way to collect dna evidence to identify the assailants. Helping and protecting him is the man who helped him get in, Kang Moo, but why is he doing it?

The title implies that the beast is the hunting season target that the club members will hunt down in the forest, but the ‘beast’ is actually Kang Moo, the only¿ member who had nothing to do with the assault, yet the one who is pulling the strings as the true threat to Kirin. Very well done metaphors.

The anthropomorphism visualises Kang moo as a panther—a skilled hunter, and Lee Kirin is a cheetah—a skilled runner. It implies that the foundation of their relationship and why it is successful despite Kang Moo’s nature as a psychopath is built on the idea that Kirin is the only one who can run fast enough to stay alongside him and keep him entertained, while also keeping just enough distance to not be caught.

It ends on a mysterious note, with the prospect of Kirin’s potential capture and death by the beast being a possible future. These two are a ticking time bomb and I freaking loved every second of it. Although the storytelling can be weak and rushed at times, the idea was well thought out and executed alright.

This was absolutely beautiful.
The following review is about the whole series.
There's a little bit of spoiler stuff for the first chapters ahead, but it's just to understand what the story is about, and if you might like it.
Kang Moo (the top) is a psychopath, and Lee Kirin (the bottom) has that melancholy, anger, and bitchy moves I love.
I loved the fact that the story was a lot about the way a relationship can work with a psychopath, a person unable to have emotions, to love, and with the need to kill, or see people get killed. But he wants to keep it under control, so he's like Dexter Morgan, a criminal we're gonna love. I loved the way Lee Kirin deals with him, the way he loves him, accepts him, I loved their relationship, and I was charmed by the both of them (yes, especially Kang Moo). They're both strong and sassy, ridiculously handsome, and they work well together.
The story is soooo intriguing, so good, not the usual stupid side dish to the smut.
BTW, the smut is really good, yeah... hot.
The art is absolutely beautiful, and it gets better with time.
It was engaging, spicy, wholesome, smart and interesting, realistic, thought-provoking, and beautifully executed. It's high-quality stuff, something I usually don't say about yaoi.

reminded me of dexter and the glory. the thing about reading something under the psychological genre is you have to distance yourself with the characters or else, the ending will fuck you up because we all know how HEA'S rarely happen in these. but even with this precaution, i just can't help but be attached with these characters. when a book made you root for someone who scored 38 out of 40 in a PCL-R test, you know it's twisted and good.

Bit tragic, bit scary but although interesting plot with equally great characters...

I think it is more a mature story in some sense than a casual romance so I like it in this regard.

In a similar realm of disturbing as Killing Stalking, I can’t really say that I enjoyed this, but rather that I found the character dynamics so far interesting. Let’s see where this goes…
