An Evening at Almack's

Rate this book
Receiving an invitation to Almack's, the most exclusive ball in London, is every woman's dream come true. Love and marriage are certain to follow.

THE HEART’S CHOICE by Sally Britton

To keep her family from scandal, Mattie Rayment needs to marry off her flirtatious younger sister before the Season ends. Vouchers for Almack’s are her best hope to secure a suitable match. When the Rayments cross paths with Oliver Bolton, the nephew of their steward, his interest in the younger sister threatens all her plans. It is up to Mattie to steer Oliver away, but before long she finds herself losing her heart to him, unsuitable match or not.

MY UNFAIR LADY by Elizabeth Johns

A lost bet. An underestimated country bumpkin. Who will win in this war of wits? Why, love, of course! Rua Postlethwaite has lived a sheltered, content life in the country until she is orphaned and forced to find work or make a hasty marriage. Her neighbors come together to try to help her have a successful Season after she receives an unexpected offer to go to London. Lord Deverell is the quintessential bored aristocrat with too much time, money, and handsomeness. When he loses a wager over a game of billiards, he finds himself doing more than dancing attendance on a nobody from Yorkshire.

SIX WISHES by Sarah M. Eden

Felicity Bandbury has come to London with one aim in mind: give her dying sister the Season of her dreams. But it is a tall order for a young lady who knows nothing of Town or Society. She enlists the help of their neighbor and childhood friend, William Carlisle. He’s not been home in years, not since the sudden loss of his parents. Felicity’s request offers him the hope of healing from his own grief as well as a connection to home he desperately needs. Can two grieving souls find room in their hearts for love?

The Heart’s Choice ~ This was such a cute story, as I've come to expect from Sally Britton. I really enjoyed the plot, the characters, and the romance. While it was frustrating how long Oliver's attention was eclipsed by Matilda's beautiful, flirty sister, I loved how he gradually came to discover more about Matilda's character in order to fall in love with her. I always find it adorable when a man comes to see and appreciate a woman’s inner beauty. So lovely.

My Unfair Lady ~ Unfortunately, I didn’t like this story at all and couldn’t even finish it. This is only my second story by Elizabeth Johns, the first being Poor Relations from the A London Season Timeless Regency collection, a story which I also didn't finish. This makes me feel that I simply don't click with the author's writing style. While the premise of My Unfair Lady seemed fun and cute (a spin-off of “My Fair Lady”), I hated the execution. It was supposed to be humorous but I found it ridiculous. Not to mention I hate rakish heroes, as well as Regencys that include frequent talk of mistresses (both which this story features). Definitely a case of “it's me, not you.”

Six Wishes ~ It’s been awhile since I’ve had the pleasure to read a story by Sarah Eden and it was lovely. Heartbreaking but beautiful, masterfully written, with fantastic characters and an adorable romance woven through a unique plot I haven't encountered in a Regency book before. I loved the tender relationship between the two sisters, the rekindling friendship between the hero and heroine that deepens into love, and the unique plot of a sister making her dear sister’s last few months of life memorable. The way the setting of Almacks was used was also very creative. Overall, Six Wishes was a wonderful story, and definitely the highlight of this collection.

Three novellas of varying degrees of interest. The final one (by Sarah Eden) was really good, with a touch of pathos surprising in such a short piece.

Sweet love stories…

It was a nice collection of romances, even though the last one was heavy on the melancholy side, but still adorable. Life isn’t always roses and happiness, but I am grateful for any happy ending in a book.

I love the Timeless Regency Collections! Each of the stories has a common element, but they always end up so unique from each other. I love discovering new-to-me authors and always enjoy the stories from my favorites. I felt like these three had great character development and plots that were interesting. I had known about Almack's from other books I've read in the genre, but I learned some new tidbits from this one as well! It is a perfect example of the nuances of the various levels of Society, the ton, and their rules- both known and unspoken.

I especially liked Sally Britton's story, with Oliver being drawn to one sister initially but after a deeper look, realizes who would make the better match. Their mutual admiration brings nice chemistry to their relationship, even while they are each working on an agenda that sometimes puts them at odds.

My Unfair Lady brings elements of humor as Rua enlivens a group of friends with some borderline antics as she and her friend seek to trick the men after learning she is the subject of a wager. It is an entertaining story but the characters were a bit two-dimensional.

Six Wishes by Sarah Eden brought depth with the bittersweet elements of bringing happiness to Felicity's sister and helping William overcome his long held grief for his family. The genuine friendship between Felicity and William develops into something more as they support and encourage each other through their times of emotional hardship.

(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)

Whenever a new Timeless Collection comes out I get excited. The theme for this collection is An Evening at Almack's which was an exclusive ball and very hard to get invited to. I liked all three of these stories of love and dancing in a beautiful gown.

THE HEART’S CHOICE by Sally Britton--Matilda (Mattie) Rayment has to find a match for her flirty younger sister before the Season ends. Their father's mental faculties are declining and if Society finds out they'd be ostracized. When a childhood friend, Oliver Bolton, the nephew of their steward, comes to call on Beatrice, Mattie tries to keep him away because she has someone else in mind for her sister.

This is a case of an older sister who's resigned herself to spinsterhood and running her father's home, who thinks she's knows what's best for her younger sister. Through her plotting to keep Oliver away from spending time with Beatrice, she comes to find out what's best for herself.

MY UNFAIR LADY by Elizabeth Johns--Lord Deverell loses a wager and must dance with a number of young women at Almack's ball. Rua Postlethwaite grew up in the country and the town's come together to help her have a Season when she gets a chance to go to London.

Aristocrat meets country girl in this fun story. Rua finds out about the bet and plays the country girl for all it's worth. Lord Deverell has never met a young woman quite like Rua Postlethwaite before and it surprised to find himself suddenly caring for her, when he didn't plan on settling down for quite some time. This was a fun story and there are a couple of scenes that are laugh out loud funny.

SIX WISHES by Sarah M. Eden--Felicity Bandbury's sister is dying and her goal is to give her sister a Season before she dies, even she can only attend a few events. While in London they run into William Carlisle who grew up on the neighboring property. They haven't seen each other since his parents' death several years ago. Felicity enlists his help in her quest to fulfill Angelina's wish list.

This was my favorite of the three stories. Felicity and Angelina were sisters and best friends which I find so sweet. Felicity wants to do this so much for her sister and William is such a dear friend and wants to help. They get four of the wishes accomplished before the Bandbury family has to return to their country home. William finds himself wanting to help with the last two wishes and returns to home he's avoided since his parents died. It's a bittersweet story that shows so much giving, love, unselfishness and healing.

This was a collection of three books and all centered around the same ball in London. I enjoyed the first and last story but really struggled to get into the second story. The characters were just too ridiculous for my taste.

The Heart's Choice by Sally Britton
Matilda is determined to help her younger sister Beatrice make a good match--with a second cousin set to inherit and their father's health declining, Beatrice marrying well is essential for their family. When they cross paths with Oliver Bolton, the nephew of their steward, Matilda is determined to steer him away from Beatrice; while Mattie has always liked Oliver, his modest inheritance isn't enough to keep Beatrice living in the style she's accustomed to. But keeping them apart leads to Mattie spending a lot of time with Oliver--and wishing that he would notice her instead of her sister.
(Big sigh.) I loved it. So good. I loved seeing the interactions between Mattie and Oliver and the growing attraction that they weren't even aware of. Very well written.

My Unfair Lady by Elizabeth Johns
A lost bet means Lord Deverell has to get a country bumpkin vouchers to Almack's. Although he is certain of his ability to make this country miss a success in London society, Dev soon finds there's much more to Rua Postlethwaite than he anticipated. She's different from any lady he's ever met--different enough that this confirmed bachelor starts to rethink his commitment to bachelorhood.
This story was a lot of fun. I liked seeing how Rua responded to Deverall, pulling out her most country mannerisms when she realizes he's up to something, and how Deverall fell for her.

Six Wishes by Sarah M. Eden
Angelina Banbury is dying, and her sister/best friend Felicity is determined to give her a taste of a London season before she dies. In London, Felicity runs into their old friend, William Carlisle, and enlists his help in giving Angelina the experiences she longs for. William, who has avoided his country home ever since the death of his parents, is delighted to help his friends, and when Angelina's Season is cut short, he even finds himself heading for the home he has avoided for years in order to continue to aid the sisters and to see if Felicity might ever think of him as more than just a dear friend.
This was the most serious of the books, with illness and death overshadowing it, but it was also really poignant and sweet. There was some fun banter between Felicity and William, which I really enjoyed. This was a really sweet and touching story.

Each of these romances was a lot of fun to read. I highly recommend this collection.

I received an ARC from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

While I wasn't a huge fan of the second novella (it had too many holes with Rua's extended family), what Sally and Sarah wrote was well worth it. I loved Mattie and Felicity! Both characters best quality was looking out for their sister's best interests.

Overview: Three stories just meant for those “Calgon, take me away!” times, when you want to escape into a different time and place. Each book is by a different author. Book 2 is humerous, and if you want to finish on a high note, you might leave it for last. Book 3 is a real tear-jerker, so grab your hankies before sitting down with it 😊.
For those wanting a bit of information about each book, I have made the following comments:

Book 1- (Sally Britton)
Poignant story of 26 year old Matilda and her younger sister Beatrice as they navigate the tricky waters of London society. Matilda has settled into caring for estate matters as her father’s health (mental faculties) has declined, while Beatrice flits from one suitor to the next, without regard for the consequences to the young men. When Oliver, a young man, raised by their estate manager, returns hoping to pursue Beatrice, Matilda finds herself trying to protect Oliver from heartbreak and finds herself in quite pickle—she somehow has fallen in love with him! Will Oliver see beyond Beatrice’s beauty? Will Matilda successfully hide her own feelings, putting them aside for her sister?
A short story that I did not want to end and will not be quickly forgotten.

Book 2 (Elizabeth John’s)
A delightful bite of a book! Rua lost her parents then one of her brothers to the Napoleonic Wars. Before dying, her brother obtained a promise from a fellow soldier to see that his sister comes to London for a season. Rua lands into a household with another young woman just coming out and where one of the sons and his group wager on various aspects concerning Rua: obtaining a voucher to Almack’s, and gaining permission for Rua to waltz. And who better to set up than the calm, collected practically confirmed bachelor of the group, Deverell. And off we start on a humerous adventure with our little country bumpkin, Rua, who has a game she is playing as well!

Book # 3 (Sarah M. Eden).
Touching story of how grief drove a man from the home and friends he had loved in his youth. Then, with death facing one friend, he was able to face the past, in order to claim his future.
used his strength to come to their aid, to make the last days of a friend memorable. The lesson he learned: do not hold back from expressing love, as life is fleeting.

I was given a copy of this book. I am voluntarily reviewing it.

This anthology is one of the best I’ve read. All three stories tug at your heart, have you giggling out loud and swooning at the romance. The story lines are well developed and characters are interesting. Each story has a different importance to the receipt of the vouchers for Almack’s. Sally Britton’s story, The Heart’s Choice, highlights the dynamics of the relationship of the older sister to her beautiful, younger, sister. Elizabeth Johns’ story, My Unfair Lady, is probably the funniest of the three. A gentleman’s wager, a country girl come to town and active sense of humor keep this story amusing. Sarah M. Eden’s story will tug at the heart strings. The story of the love between two sisters, one of whom is slowly dying of a wasting disease, will have you working to keep the tears at bay.
I totally enjoyed all three stories. I look forward to more by these authors.

I thought it might be helpful to share the definitions I use for my ratings. To start with, a 3 is a really good rating. It means the story fully met my expectations for an enjoyable romance read and that I’ll happily read it again. A rating above a 3 is beyond my expectations, and a 5 means it affected me on a deeper level. I rarely give anthologies a rating of 5 because they’re usually too short to get that reaction from me. A rating below a 3 means I will avoid reading it again. If it’s a 1, I will absolutely never read it again.
Two of the stories had very entertaining plot premises. This anthology is a good primer about the tight rules and etiquette governing the behavior of men and women in Regency era romance literature.

The Heart’s Choice by Sally Britton—3 out of 5
Nice tale of an older sister who has been out for several seasons, believes that her chances for a match are over and that all hopes lie with her beautiful younger sister, until the steward’s nephew comes to London. They’ve known each other since childhood, but now he is newly eligible since he has risen to the status of a country gentleman.

My Unfair Lady by Elizabeth Johns—3.5 out of 5
I enjoyed the premise of this one with men placing a bet where the loser must dance with young ladies at Almack’s (although the bet was a bit convoluted and could have been simplified), the heroine a traditional Regency era underdog (as an orphaned daughter of a poor country vicar), and the interplay as they tried to outwit each other.

Six Wishes by Sarah M. Eden—4 out of 5
My favorite of the three books—a real heart warmer. I enjoyed watching love grow between Felicity and William as he helped Felicity grant her dying sister, Angelina, six wishes for a season in London. The only issue that jarred me was when William used “finagle” in a sentence. When I looked it up, the sources I found stated that it entered the English language in the US in the 1920’s. Certainly not a word that would have been used in Regency England!

THE HEART’S CHOICE by Sally Britton 3 stars
Just ok for me, the characters were good, romance a little too sweet, didn't like how Oliver was after Beatrice majority of the book then switched to Matlida.
Moral Note: Clean

MY UNFAIR LADY by Elizabeth Johns 4 stars
It started out slow but picked up momentum and the middle and ending were good.
Moral Note: Clean except mention of mistresses.

SIX WISHES by Sarah M. Eden: 4.5 stars
I liked this one the best of the 3. Liked the friends to lovers...I did not like how her parents went from not being ok with her being out in society...then to it's all ok without even mentioning softening towards the idea. Super cute though.

An Evening at Almack’s

The Heart’s Choice by Sally Britton (4 stars)

I loved this story! The depth of knowledge that Oliver and Matilda had of one another’s characters was multi-layered and deep. We get to see their long-standing acquaintance through a series of vignettes, yet their respect, attraction and subsequent love was newly discovered in this story.

The father in the story is an important part of the plot. His affliction is a foil that brings out the true character of each of the participants.

It was a delight to read this well-crafted and thoughtful novella...my only complaint was that it ended far too soon.

My Unfair Lady by Elizabeth Johns (3.5 stars)

A delightful premise! Before they even meet, we know that these two would suit one another and it’s a fun ride just watching it happen! Their subtle duel of wits leads to grudging respect and then turns, naturally, into admiration.

It came to an end too quickly, (dang it!), but that’s the problem with novella’s. Especially with well-crafted ones!

(One grammatical issue in chapter 1, but it’s a twisty, tough sentence that could have turned long and involved. I didn’t take any stars off for it.)

Six Wishes by Sarah M. Eden (4 stars)

Driven by unselfish motives, Felicity and William find love in the midst of past grief and anticipated future grief.

A wonderful story with acts of service to Felicity’s dying sister. Like the first story in this collection, she acts as a foil that brings our characters together and shows off their true worth as good, caring people. (Spoiler: I did so want her to be healed by some doctor in London-sigh...) Fun moments of humor and stolen moments of romance woven into the tapestry of this narrative.

I can’t get enough of Sarah Eden’s writing! Whenever a new book or novella comes out, I grab it!

Book 1, The Heart's Choice - Oliver Bolton has finally stabilized his property enough for him to travel to London to seek a bride during the Season when he encounters the Rayment sisters whom he knew in his youth. He's always had a crush on the younger sister, but the elder sister, Mattie, seems determined to keep him away from her. Mattie has given up on finding a match for herself, but she's determined to secure a match for her sister, but just not to Oliver. Their personalities would never work out. Yet, if it means putting herself in his path, then that's what she'll do. What follows is a sweet, second chance tale where the main characters slowly realize their feelings for each other.
My rating - 5 stars

Book 2, My Unfair Lady - Lord Deverell must fulfill a bet made to his friends and that means helping introduce a young, country lady to society. What he doesn't expect is for her to catch him in his game! Rua Postlethwaite may have grown up in the country, but having grown up with brothers, she understands the games men play and she's the target of one. What follows is a hilarious battle of wits that develops into true emotions.
My rating - 5 stars

Book 3, Six Wishes - Felicity Bandbury is determined to fulfill her terminally ill sister's final wishes to have a Season in London, even if modified. While there, she sees their childhood friend, William Carlisle. When William realizes the purpose of the sisters being in London, he determines to help as much as possible. What he doesn't expect is to find healing from his own grief from losing his parents. This is a bittersweet story. Wrapped around the romance is the knowledge that the one sister is dying.
My rating - 4 stars.

Sweet, clean regency romance collection...

This collection has some of my favorite regency writers so I was excited to read it.

The Heart's Choice by Sally Britton
I liked both Mattie and Oliver. (Beatrice I was not so fond of as she seemed to think the whole world revolved around her but even she was able to push others toward happiness in the end). Mattie and Oliver were both caring people. I liked how they both treated her father who suffered from dementia. The outcome of the novella was predictable but it was an enjoyable read. Kind of a second chance romance since they first knew one another in their youth.

My Unfair Lady by Elizabeth Johns
First off, that is a clever title. I enjoyed the interaction between Lord Deverell and Rua. I was amused with the war of wits between them and that they were both aware of what was going on rather than the joke being on just one of them. And of course their war of wits could only lead to love.

Six Wishes by Sarah M. Eden
This novella was the sad one. I felt such heart ache through out as the family prepared themselves to lose their beloved daughter/sister. This one was also a second chance romance since the sisters find themselves befriended once again by the neighbor of their youth whom they hadn't seen since the death of his parents 5 years earlier. The care for the ailing Angelina touched my heart as did their desire to grant her six wishes in experiencing a London Season. And I loved how having learned that time is often short Angelina pushed Felicity to forget the usual timidity in expressing feelings and grasp for happiness while she could. The happily ever after is there in the story but it is underlined with the grief of losing loved ones through out.

THE HEART'S CHOICE
I give this short story a 5 star review! I absolutely loved it!! It always amazes me when authors can pack so much character and story into just a short amount of pages, and that is exactly what Sally Britton did in this story. Mattie was a heroine who I absolutely adored. She was so practical and self-less, but she also had spark and calm wit that made me love the range of her personality. Oliver was positively lovely. He was a completely endearing character, despite his originally somewhat shallow taste in girls. However, that was due more to him deceiving himself in her character rather than any shallowness of his part. I loved Mattie and Oliver's friendship from childhood on and also how he was a humble, yet also a confident and smart hero. The plot was also very endearing, and I liked Mattie's father's character especially, despite the sadness his situation brought. A great little read!

MY UNFAIR LADY
I rate this book three stars. It was okay. I liked that there was a lot of humor, and Rua was kind of an interesting and fun character. However, I barely liked Deverell, I don’t feel like they know each other at all, and I just couldn’t get into it. So, this read was just okay.

SIX WISHES
How does Sarah M. Eden always manage to write the most beautiful books??? A definite five star review for this one. This tale was altogether heart breaking and beautiful. Angelina’s situation was so sad, and Felicity’s treatment of her was so sweet and endearing. Same for William. The two of them are so beautiful and also had such humor and sweetness. I absolutely loved it!! I cannot believe how attached I was able to get to the characters, despite the short length.

The Heart’s Choice - Sally Britton
Where character wins the guy over looks! Mattie is the responsible, caring older sister & when her father starts to display symptoms of dementia, she & her mother think it best to retire to the country away from the gossipy, critical eyes of the ton. With a flirty, frivolous younger sister who adores luxury and the attention she gets in town, Mattie and her mother hope to find a wealthy suitor for Beatrice.
When a childhood friend makes an appearance and shows interest in Beatrice, Mattie thinks to divert his attention knowing her sister would not be satisfied with such a match. The more time they spend together, the closer they get (naturally!) & Oliver realizes that it is Mattie that he wants after all.

My Unfair Lady - Elizabeth Johns
A little bit of Pgymalion but with the heroine who does have good manners and comportment deciding to have her own fun when she figures out that she is the object of a wager.

Six Wishes - Sarah M. Eden
A tinge of sadness in a terminally ill sister (of the heroine). Felicity is determined that her beloved older sister gets to experience everything on her “bucket list” while she is able to and a dear, childhood friend comes to the rescue. A sweet and gentle story of childhood friends who find as adults that their relationship has even more meaning and depth.

3 very different stories with different tones. Not as good as some of the previous anthologies but a very solid read altogether.

This was another great Timeless Anthology.

The Heart's Choice - If you love the movies Sabrina, you will love this story. I didn't notice the parallel until I was telling my husband about the story. I love both the old and new Sabrinas and I loved this story too. Mattie was just trying to be a good big sister and save her family and Oliver was trying to get closer to the family to get their approval. Yet the stars aligned quite differently than they expected. They are great characters and this is a sweet story.

My Unfair Lady - Oh, Rua is hilarious. I love her pluck and wit. She is perfect for Deverell. This was such a fun story and I enjoyed the interactions between them. I wish it had been a little bit longer, but that is one of the problems with novellas.

Six Wishes - I put off reading this story because all the reviews talked about how sad it was and I wasn't ready to cry. I'm usually quite the boob, but surprisingly didn't cry during this book. I think I was more focused on the hope and budding romance, that I didn't allow the sad undertone to overrule that. I really enjoyed the relationship between Felicity and William. They were so sweet together and I loved their banter. I also loved their great love for Angelina. It was a beautiful story. I thought this collection was following a movie theme with the first being based on Sabrina and thr second My Fair Lady, but I can't figure out a movie for this book. If anyone has any idea, I'd love to hear it.

The Heart's Choice by Sally Britton
1 star
Only made it a few chapters into this one before I started skimming a bit. The female main character is self-righteous and judgey about her pretty but ditzy sister's romantic life. She's a 'well intentioned' schemer. When the male main character has a crush on the ditzy sister and his feelings are returned the female mc makes sure to keep them apart which eventually works out to her advantage.

My Unfair Lady by Elizabeth Johns
5 stars
I did the ugly cry.
A few gentlemen get together and make an ungentlemanly bet about a country miss being turned from a sow's ear into a silk purse. The young lady catches on to the scheme from the outset and turns the tables on the mostly unsuspecting gentlemen. Amusing antics ensue. Love strikes along with a hefty dose of humility and the ending was just so very lovely.

Six Wishes by Sarah M Eden
4 stars
Sad and sweet.
Two sisters, the elder of which appears to be dying of leukemia, are trying to make sure her last chance for a London season is an enjoyable one. A long-lost friend of the family is encountered and he works to make the elder sister's last wishes come true while finding he has feelings for the younger sister. The male main character makes a lot of effort and sacrifice to do the right things in this story and was very sweet. The ending was happy in spite of shadows.

I've read all of these anthologies and they are always entertaining, but this one totally captivated me and dare I say my favorite? Every story was engaging and heartfelt without feeling like the story was rushed. Of course Britton and Eden are two of my very favorite regency writers, Johns was a new author for me, but all three stories were fantastic. In The Heart's Choice, Mattie and Oliver learn how to find their own happiness and love blossoms slowly. My Unfair Lady is filled with wit and humor with a happily ever after that is way more satisfying than the movie, My Fair Lady. Ha ha. No seriously it is. Johns kept me laughing and I wanted to know what else happened to the supporting characters in her story. Eden is a master at male friendships. I don't know why or how she does it, but she offers great depth to the male leads in her story with the perfect balance of serious and wit. In Six Wishes, William and Leonard have a lasting friendship that is sincere and still fun and for me that makes the story so much better. Felicity is gracious and adorable. A tender story of true love in all it's forms. A great addition to this Timeless Collection that I will go back and read often.

The Heart's Choice by Sally Britton
I got the book for this author. Mattie and Beatrice are sisters. Mattie, the older and more serious sister, is trying to steer Beatrice, the beautiful and fickle sister, to a good match. Their father is ill (dementia) and he has no heir. Oliver, nephew of the steward for their country estate, shows up. He is interested in Beatrice and Mattie tries to come between them. The story is so well written, but also a bit sad.

My Unfair Lady by Elizabeth Johns
A variation of My Fair Lady with Rua, a poor, country vicar's daughter who has come to London for a season, and Dev, the arrogant aristocrat. Fun to read, but the relationship was very loosely written.

Six Wishes by Sarah Eden
This was a sad one, but well written. Felicity convinces her family to come to London for an abbreviated season for her sister Angelica who is dying. The six wishes are the six things she most wants to do while there. Felicity sees her childhood friend William one day and he agrees to help her. A sweet story of the tight bond between sisters and finding love amidst sorrow.

This was a heartwarming collection full of sweet childhood friendships evolving into romances, close and loving sibling relationships, and strong well-rounded heroines. And the best part was that each story contained all of these elements, in its own great way.

The Heart's Choice by Sally Britton
A friends to lovers. I didn't quite like the dynamic between the hero and heroine at the beginning of the novella but the sweet ending made up for it.
Kisses only.

My Unfair Lady by Elizabeth Johns
This novella had amusing dares between gentlemen, women, the subject of this dare, determined to outbest them, close friendships, and a surprisingly funny heroine. There were lots of amusing scenes.
There were quite a few mentions of rakes and mistresses, however. And, a heated scene with kisses and embraces at the end.

Six Wishes by Sarah M. Eden
This was a sweet friends to lovers with a pair of close sisters, a deadly illness, and a long-lost childhood friend who comes to love them.
There was a heated kiss and dealing with subjects of death and grief.

Almack’s was one of the most famous places of meeting others of the ton in Regency Times. But these stories have more heart and more emotion with what having a “season” meant to many young women. These three short stories are about young women that didn’t have everything perfect. The first story of “The Heart’s Choice”is a feeling which most young women have, that a sister or a friend is always more sought out by the young gentlemen than yourself. “My Unfair Lady”. Is one that was about a poor vicar’s daughter that really didn’t want o have a London Season and was hilarious in the game of ‘who is fooling who?’ The witty repartee between the two main characters was so enjoyable to read. The last story “Six Wishes” was so sad and realistic about a sister with declining health and her younger sister/best friend trying to help her realize her six wishes. It touched the heart in a non romantic way that was memorable.

Another KNOCK OUT collection, friends. Claps all around. I loved the variety in the stories - both in character and plot. I appreciated the humor and, of course, clean romances each. What a refreshing delight!

THE HEART'S CHOICE by Sally Britton - My notes on my computer after reading ran as follows: SUPER cute. Made me giddy and happy and giggling for a while. Loved the depth and variety of story and that it wasn’t all physical- much was love from other experiences/depth of emotion. There you have it. ;)

MY UNFAIR LADY by Elizabeth Johns - Very witty- lots of classic book and romance references. Cute couple and fun characters without going too far or being unbelievable. Grinning throughout.

SIX WISHES by Sarah M. Eden - I swear this author can do wrong. I loved everything I've ever read by her and anticipate continuing to do so for a very long time. The story itself was very tender. It made me cry and miss my sisters. A very sweet love of a gentle, generous type.
