In the jagged peaks of the Border Mountains, Ari Ara revives the ancient legend of the Peace Force, gathering friends and strangers to stop violence and prevent war. With the Way Between guiding their footsteps, they set out to wage peace. Before long, a rising threat makes them take drastic action.

How can we define peace? Certainly, we would include the absence of armed conflict. We would probably also include the absence of other forms of armed and physical violence in our communities. Many would see peace more expansively as including social justice, the satisfaction of basic needs and the availability of opportunity to realize one’s full potential. What does it mean to work actively to promote or maintain peace: to build or wage peace? This field of study is complex and complicated, philosophically as well as practically. There are no easy answers, and the determination of what is (and is not) included are blurry. I can think of no better source of inspiration for these topics than the Ari Ara series by Rivera Sun, and this latest installation is the best one yet. While she has constructed a fantasy world centered around the character of a young girl who finds herself living in the intersection of peace and conflict, ancient tradition and the potential for innovation, this is more than simply a children’s story. Ari Ara provides a vehicle for exploring – and making a simple, compelling case for – the ongoing challenges of peace-making at the individual, communal, national and global levels. This book – and the series it belongs to – can provide light entertainment as well as deep reflection, and ultimately, inspiration for those of all ages!
I love the Ari Ara books so much. This one was no different! I particularly enjoyed her “growing up” stories in this book. I can’t wait to see what happens next!!
