Yosemite Maasai: A Biography of an Unexpected Life

Rate this book
What moments define the path of one’s life?

Yosemite Maasai is the biography of one man’s remarkable journey to find his true self. This story of luck, love, and resilience will inspire anyone who is struggling to make sense of the path their own life is taking.

As the first-born son of the Maasai village chief, Olotumi Laizer knew the path his life would take. He would be raised separately from his sisters, be circumcised as a teenager, spend his warrior years protecting cattle with his brothers, marry multiple wives, and conceive dozens of children. But then, at age ten, a chance event exposed him to the outside world.

Although Laizer continued to participate in traditional Maasai rites of passage including ceremonial circumcision and warriorhood, he began questioning the central tenets of his culture. Eventually, Laizer’s questions culminated in a showdown with his father, who cursed him with death. Undaunted, Laizer continued down a path of change and growth, taking him from Tanzania to Yosemite National Park and back again.

Beautifully written, culturally respectful and sensitive, page turning in action and drama--Rachel Mazur has written an extraordinary account of an extraordinary man. In this book we are given amazing access into the traditions and lifestyle of the Maasai tribe in East Africa as we 'watch' Olotumi Laizer grow up and claim an impactful voice of moral courage and conviction--one that spans time, culture, and continents with breathless humility. This is a must read for anyone in need of encouragement, hope, and inspiration; it is a perfect reflection of the difference one person can make to change the world for the better--in spite of incredible odds.

Yosemite Maasai, a Biography of an Unexpected Life by Rachel Mazur.
Ms. Mazur says at the end of her book “I hope I have done his story justice.”
More than justice, her book has brought brilliant acclaim to a man torn between two diametrically opposed cultures. Having attained the status of warrior in a culture that preceded the Dark Age, He transitioned to a fully functioning 21st century man due to an anonymous Dutch doner who paid for his western education. Yet he retains his ties to his Maasai culture, Although he married an American Caucasian who was an employee of Yosemite National Park, together they went on to found an inter-park sisterhood with The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA). They also established a self-help non-profit called Nadupoi Community Based Organization. It serves to develop economic security in three Maasai communities.

The book is an eye-opening look into a culture that the developed world knows almost nothing about. Nevertheless, it portrays accurately the interdependent cultural and structural morays that have been vital to the survival of the Maasai for centuries.

The biography also deals with the impact of climate change, governmental restrictions, and encroachment of modern society on the livelihood of the Maasai. Adaptation has been mandatory, but the protagonist, Olotumi M. Laizer, and his wife Kim have done everything in their power to help Laizer’s clan to adapt without overturning the fundamentals of Maasai culture. With, perhaps, one exception, female circumcision. That practice was connected to a long process of early marriage and subjugation of the women to rolls that were vital in ancient times, but now hinder the ability of the Maasai to meet the pressure of a changing world.
Aside from all the critical historical and sociological import of the book, it is also a beautiful love story. Love really does conquer all, prejudice, ignorance, cultural differences, and the fundamental female/male quandary. Each had to relinquish much in their marriage, but both gained immeasurably!

Fascinating story of the life of a young Masai warrior who
falls in love with an American (who works in Yosemite Park )when she visits Tanzania and Kenya. Full of intriguing cultural details of his life from birth to adulthood and later the challenges and joys of their intercultural romance. zit was a fast and compelling read. It balanced well an honesty about the good and bad in both their cultures and how they circumnavigated their vastly different world views.
Their work together to improve the conditions in his village, particularly the life of the women was inspiring.

interesting peek into a vanishing world

Well written biography of a young Maasai man. Interesting to see the ability to rebel within a yet respectful manner. Also highlights the prejudice of our assumptions of a pastoral people, the romanticism that both requires and abhors the primitive other.

Fascinating story about a remarkable individual. Mazur does a great job of capturing the essence of this man's upbringing in a society so very different than ours in the developed world. How he manages to bridge these two vastly different worlds is a tale well told. Excellent writing style! Very readable.

The main reason I was able to finish this book is because a friend of mine knows the man it is about. I know from her that he is a good man trying to implement change in his tribe. The story is interesting but also horrifying that these things are still occurring today.

Mindset changer. Laizer´s life is really an adventure. Read this as I was in Yosemite and had the blessing of meeting and talking to Laizer. Everyone should read it and be as impacted by his life as I was.
