This time the Red Queen isn't Alice's only enemy...

Well, color me totally impressed! I've read both original Alice stories, seen the animated Disney film, tolerated both Johnny Depp movies, and even streamed the short spinoff series Once Upon A Time In Wonderland. Out of all of them I liked the old Disney version the best...until now...Madness In Wonderland is what all of them should have been and weren't.

There was just something about Tabitha Bouldin's take on the story that made me unable to put it down. I can't even define why nor explain it but this story burrowed down deep into my imagination and held me captive pretty much from the first few sentences. Steampunk is not a genre that I've really had much of a chance to read but I have enjoyed those few a great deal. Madness In Wonderland was not an exception to that experience and I finished it in a matter of a few short hours. Tabitha Bouldin may have been a new-to-me author but she has me hooked on her Steampunk!

I was completed intrigued by Tabitha Bouldin's skill with merging aspects of the original novels with her completely fresh and new Steampunk world. Normally I have a reserved opinion of classic story reincarnations as most of them lose the spirit of the original and are a mere shadow at best, however, Madness In Wonderland most definitely doesn't fall into that class. The magic is still there, and in the case of this first Beyond Wonderland novel, it is enhanced to the point I came away a completely captivated reader. Even now a few days later I keep thinking about the story, reliving some of the best parts, and desperately hoping that there will be another Beyond Wonderland story coming in the near future...

Madness in Wonderland can be summed up in these two words.
Delightfully unique.
I am not one to get so entranced in a book such as this, even though I am slightly captivated by Steampunk thanks to my fifteen-year-old daughter. The imagery that Tabitha Bouldin masterfully created was imaginative and tangible. Yes, I said tangible because the words used invoked the use of the scenes.
“Hatter stomped alongside, his mutterings filling Alpha’s ears with buzzing drudgery.”
If that cannot invoke the imagination to spring to life, nothing can. I could smell the dirt, feel the wind in my face, and see the hulking monster because of Bouldin’s descriptiveness.
Now, let’s talk about this mash-up.
Alice in Wonderland meets Frankinstine in a world of Steampunk’s gears, technology, and leather-clad Victorian clothing. YES!!!! Top hats and goggles with night vision? Amazing. Bouldin has combined two of my favorite stories in a unique way that had me turning the pages when I should have been sleeping.
There was one small hiccup that I did struggle with – the lingo. Never have I read this sub-genre before so I wasn’t up-to-date on that part. It didn’t stop me though.
I know that Tabitha Bouldin has been an author of contemporary fiction, but if this is her new direction…girl, take me away in your steamship.

I usually do not latch onto quotes but this one was great. “I’d rather be impaled by the truth than live joyfully in a lie.”

Steampunk fiction is an interesting pick for me. The author pulled me in to the Alice in Wonderland world with all the familiar characters. I must have expressed every emotion from surprise, anger, love, hate, laughter, suspense, revenge, and forgiveness. Wow, what a journey!

Did you ever wonder what might have happened to the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, and the Cheshire Cat? Well, wonder no more. Read this version and confront some madness in Wonderland.

Thanks for the roller coaster ride, Tabitha Bouldin.

So, if I'm being honest, I'm just not sure I am the audience for this book. The writing is very well done, but the story just didn't draw me in the way I think it could other readers. I liked the whole premise of it being a steampunk retelling of Alice in Wonderland. That's so cool, right? It was just too dark for me I think.

If you like darker retellings of classic fairytales, definitely pick this one up! It just wasn't for me.

Bouldin combined Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and threw in some steam punk for good measure--- and it worked! This is not my typical genre read. I am not really into fantasy and Alice in Wonderland is like one of my least liked books/movie. However this was a lot of fun and for the most part really kept my attention. There is even a hint of another fairy tale, but if I told you, I'd have to kill you--- or something like that.

All in all, I had a lot of fun with this action packed adventure and think it works well for YA as well as any adult.

But really, I enjoyed it. It was cute, enjoyable, and a lot of fun. I smiled at the characters. I was astounded at the creativity with the steampunk aspect. If you enjoy that type of thing, you'll want to pick this up. If you aren't really into it, try this one.

Christian based but not heavy in your face.

I had never read a Steampunk book before so this experience was enlightening. For those of you, like me, who are equally uninformed, Wikipedia defines steampunk as a subgenre of science fiction that incorporates retrofturistic technology and aesthetics inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered technology.”

If you can’t make heads or tails of that definition, think a fascinating mixture of technology that’s not possible yet mixed with 1865 costumes and nobility. For several chapters, I was just so fascinated by steam-powered airships and a feisty Alice.

Then, the story itself drew me along and the creativity—oh, wow. I love how the author’s mind works! There’s great fighting scenes, a scene where you just might cry, and the romance.
The only thing I perhaps didn’t like is the end dragged on a bit. Come on, people, love is importanter!

I strongly recommend this book but you will have to pay attention!

Tabitha Bouldin's foray into fantasy and steampunk is a smash!

She created an otherworldly place where familiar characters from Alice in Wonderland enmeshed with a modern day Frankenstein. And, I was all in on her story.

It was easy to picture both the characters and their plight with her adept writing, it seemed like a Tim Burton or Wes Anderson movie. Full of light and color, tense scenes, and pop-off-the-page surrealism.

I'm happy there's more arriving in the future, it's on my reading radar for sure.

Such a unique take on Alice in Wonderland. You get a steampunk twist with characters that you’ve always loved. There is a lot more going on then meets the eye and the twists and turns will leave you captivated. Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite classics and this definitely did not disappoint. Can’t wait to continue the series.

This was an awesome read! I always love books like this but they have to be done well and treat the characters right for me to truly enjoy them. This author did just that. I got pulled into wonderland and enjoyed the madness.

All the wonderful characters and the huge range of emotions I felt. The entire book was just great and I’m so glad I got to read it. I’m hoping the author does more like this so I can dive into them!

Wow! another fantastic read from Tabitha Bouldin! Truly this woman can do it all. The adventure! The references to the fairytale that at one time I knew, all coming back again. The steam-punk-ishnes!
This book is rich with imagery, strong characters and redemption!
If you love Fairy-tale retellings, this book will not disappoint.
I've been eagerly anticipating this book, and recommend it to all lovers of fantasy, teens and adults alike!

Ok. WOW. Let me just start off with I LOVED this. Streampunk + Alice in Wonderland + Frankenstein? Yes!! This was such an excellent mashup. I love the twists on plot and characters! Really there isn’t anything about the story I didn’t like, minus the cliff hanger. Authors love to torture. 😱 (At least I already had the next book ready to go as soon as I finished this one!)

The characters were quirky, flawed, real, and fun! They take risks and find themselves in some dangerous situations. I loved seeing all the “familiar” characters in new ways. Such fun twists with a few of them. I’m 100% team Alice and Hatter.

The plot was well paced and kept me on the edge of my seat. It was action packed and full of twists, some I saw coming and others that completely blindsided me.

This is for you if you like:

✨mad scientists
✨automatons

I received a copy of madness in wonderland in exchange for my honest review.

Madness is wonderland is jam packed with adventure and fun. By page 2 I was hooked, the writing is descriptive and enthralling and the characters are so very lovable.

To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of Lewis Carrol’s Alice in wonderland, I had been in its ballet, and that experience ruined it for me. But Madness in Wonderland was amazing. I don’t know how Tabitha Bouldin managed to combine two of my least favorite books and make me adore it!

Madness in Wonderland lives beyond its inspiration, becoming something new and thriving. I loved how natural everything felt.

It’s plot is thrumming with life and the characters lift off the page.

Alice, Hatter, Alpha, Chess and many more.

Immersive scenery and technology, friendship, love and relationships to warm your heart.

I hope there will be a book two exploring the ivory side of Wonderland. I want more!

This was my kind of book! A steampunk Alice in Wonderland retelling with a Frankenstein twist? Yes, please! I was drawn right into this story and was completely captivated.

I really enjoyed the three different POVs following Alice, Hatter, and Alpha. Although I do have to say Alpha's was probably my favorite. He was such an intriguing character. I liked Alice too. She was a great heroine. Brave, fierce, steadfast, and loyal. She was easy to root for. I wanted to love Hatter, but I never fully warmed up to him. He was an interesting guy, but a bit too impulsive and stubborn for my liking.

I LOVED Chess. He had such a strong faith, and I liked the way that he shared it with others. It just felt so natural. He was a little rough around the edges, but there was definitely more to him than first met the eye. I wish he'd been featured a little more prominently, but I enjoyed every second he showed up on the page.

This action-packed retelling is sure to appeal to fans of Morgan L. Busse and Sara Ella. I'm hoping for many more books in this series because I'd love to visit this world again and again.

no spice.
E-Arc

"What if Alice grew up in Wonderland, became a pirate, and fell in love with the Mad Hatter? Once upon a time, Alice in Wonderland and Frankenstein crossed each other's worlds and chaos ensued."

Alice is a steadfast pirate falling in love with the Mad Hatter, a forbidden love. Alice, Mad Hatter, and Rabbit find themselves in the middle of a battle that starts a revolution against Queen Hart. As a result, we uncover the true story behind the Frankenstein monster (Doc's monster) and Alice and the connection they share.

I could not stop reading this book, and when I did I was thinking about all the characters and what I would do if I was Alice. this is a multi-POV story written in such a way that the timeline makes sense with how characters view events in 'real life'.

beautiful writing, and amazing retelling.

I received an ARC of this book. I enjoyed it. It took me a minute to get into it, it's not my usual genre. However, once I was used to the setting, the story was very engaging.

Alice and Hatter are pirates who may be more than friends.
The evil queen needs to be stopped for the sake of Wonderland.
How will they do it when there is a mad scientist, a Frankenstein type monster, and a metal army in their way?
And who is going to rule in place of the Queen?

Malice in Wonderland piqued my interest, especially after I deeply enjoyed Sara Ella's Wonderland duology. Additionally, I found Malice in Wonderland shortly after writing an article on the horror genre for work, so the Frankenstein tie-in had me eager to read Tabitha Corvin's take, as well. I was not disappointed, but what I got was what I like to call a mixed bag.

Malice in Wonderland is similar to Sara Ella's duology in that both are, of course, set in Wonderland, and both give Alice a much bigger role than she had in Lewis Carroll's original stories, and one she does not expect to take on. However, the similarities stop there. In some ways, Malice in Wonderland is the better book, in that Alice reads more mature here. She is a young adult, but she embraces more of the "adult" side of that distinction. Wonderland is her true home, and she immediately steps up to do whatever it takes to keep it, and its people, safe. She embodies what I'm coming to think of as gritty compassion, in that she loves her friends and chosen family, but that love is much more "do," much more "get one's hands dirty," than "comfort and soothe after the fact."

As for the other characters, they're no slouches, either. They embody different degrees of gritty compassion, as well as determination, loyalty, ingenuity, and other traits I want to see in well-written heroes, especially in a story like this one. Yet, these traits are expertly mixed with vulnerability, weakness, and yes, sometimes outright sinful behavior. In fact, Malice in Wonderland teems with ethical questions that, while the right level for a YA target audience, are complex and thorny enough for an adult reader like me. What's great though, is that these questions don't just exist in vacuums. They're attached to real people with real emotions who live, laugh, and hurt, even if they're not "real people" upon first meeting.

That, of course, brings me to the character arc and plot thread of Alpha/AO. I straight up admit, he was my favorite part of the whole book. I don't say that lightly, because his arc was painful for me. One of my core values is autonomy, and seeing Alpha's stripped from him, seeing it used as a weapon and a threat, broke my heart. It triggered all my rawest, deepest emotions. But this was done in the best way possible, in that Tabitha got me to keep reading. She got me to root for Alpha, and in turn the other characters, not out of pity but out of a realization, I care about these characters. They are like me. I have been them, despite the fact I don't live in a steampunk universe and have never faced a tyrannical queen or a literal mad scientist. I wanted to see them triumph because they reminded me that for humanity, anything less is unacceptable. Anything less is a betrayal to who we are supposed to be.

That's probably the only true spiritual thread in Malice in Wonderland. Tabitha nods at a couple other spiritual truths, notably through Chess. But otherwise, spirituality is largely missing here. I might have liked more, but what exists works great, if you know where to look. (Again, the threads are almost too subtle at times, so I'm unsure if I love the subtlety, but if you have a good eye, or want to hone your eye, this book provides a worthy challenge).

Tabitha earns a few more points for her steampunk setting, simply because steampunk is still, ahem, gaining steam in the fantasy genre. Plus, I still don't see a lot of it in the Christian market, subtle or organic. Tabitha does stumble a bit, which I'll get to momentarily. Despite that, the steampunk setting mostly hits the notes it should. The ships, weaponry, and gadgetry give Wonderland a fresh face. They help raise the stakes and give some plot elements, such as Crimson and Doc's endgame, extra credibility. I also thought they were a pleasant change from the more common "Medieval-flavored" fantasies out there these days.

So, with all that said, why only three stars? It comes down to a case of, several strengths without enough elements to tie them together. Oftentimes, Malice in Wonderland reads like the second or third book in a series, but it's actually a series opener. A couple times, I actually went back to the beginning looking for information I'd missed. No; all the information is given, but there are significant gaps. For example, characters often talk about places and events as if readers should already know what or where they are or how they play into the story. Or they'll drop references into conversation as if we're supposed to know the entire story, like an "inside joke." I don't know if I should chalk this up to not knowing the original Wonderland stories backwards and forwards or what, but I think even if I did, it would've jarred me out of the story.

Similarly, the action often feels rushed or jerky. I understand that to a point. These characters are being pursued or in battle for much of the story, and that's fine. The problem is, they'll often switch locations or plans with little or no notice. Thus, I found myself backtracking, trying to figure out, "Okay, how and when did you get here? When did we drop or pick up this person? Where did this person go?"

Speaking of that problem, Tabitha has a bunch of great characters here. I enjoyed all their stories. Where she messed up though, was in switching points of view every single chapter and trying to tell everyone's stories in chapter-sized chunks. That is, just as I got oriented in Alice's story and why she was a threat to Crimson, I got jerked back to Alpha's story. Then, once I figured that out and got invested in that, I got jerked back to Hatter. Then, just as I started rooting for his and Alice's romance, or him to find Pippa, back to Alice, and she's not even focused on Crimson right now, she's helping Alpha again, and...whew, I'm lost, and tired!

Based on the constant shifting and pacing problems, I'm unsure I'll return to this series. That said, Malice in Wonderland is still a good book. It's still a great one, for the right person. It gets my recommendation if you don't mind Tabitha's writing style, or if you're comfortable with several POV shifts per book. Otherwise, I'd recommend Sara Ella's Wonderland duology instead, or perhaps Morgan L. Busse's Cry of the Raven trilogy. Or, if you like the steampunk, tech aspects of this story and want something more sci-fi, try Candace Kade's Enhanced duology.

The imagination and creativity of this author shines in this tale with a twist. Alice In Wonderland meets steampunk where nothing is what you thought you knew of the fairy tale. I have always loved Alice in Wonderland and even played her in high school. Her character is unique and quirky in a way that attracts the curious to her. I loved how determined she was to not only save Hatter’s sister but to save the monster that everyone mistrusted. Beneath the surface, Alice saw more than evil.

The nod to space is evident in the transportation used in the story. I could easily picture the airship with all its gears flying around commanding power and recognition. With chaos aboard it is a fight to see who will win in their quest for victory. As the characters decide who will be win one statement stood out to me. Chess makes it clear that “If the Maker can forgive one like me, He can forgive anyone.” What a shock this was to the Hatter. Do we think that some people don’t deserve to be forgiven? It is an argument that travels around the airship as the characters debate who should have a clean slate.

Among all the action going on, the author gives us lessons we may have overlooked in our lives. I have never heard of an unbirthday gift. But oh my does it resonate within me. Have you ever received a gift from someone just because ? Maybe they wanted you to know how much they care or were thinking of you. That readers, is an unbirthday gift. Those are the ones we hold dear because it was given with compassion and no expectations.

Greed, jealousy and power overtake characters in this story that has its share of danger and adventure. I loved how the author creates a theme of feeling rejected and slowly heal from the wounds of feeling worthless. The story is not with a few surprises which had me focused on what was to happen next. With madness happening in front of Alice will she be able to save herself? Can she depend on others to discover the truth and set her free? Grab a copy of this book to discover what happens to Alice and experience the battle of free will.

Oh man, I’m not sure where to start. So, the AI virtual voice audio book is terrible. I hope the author gets a professional one done or reads it herself one day because it did this story a terrible disservice. Secondly, the writing gradually became better over time without overly metaphoric and flowery sentences that made little sense and did not move the story forward. The story became increasingly more interesting at about the mid-point but up until then I cared very little for most of the characters except the monster. He was the only one that seemed to have a legit struggle going on and we got plenty of insight into his motives and struggles. Personally, I felt like the story didn’t really start in the right place. While I’m told Alice is this amazing pirate we don’t really see her be awesome till way later. Instead, we promptly see her fall off a boat she’s called home most of her life. How exactly does that happen to a seasoned pirate? In addition, I feel like an establishing scene where the team aboard the Wonder does a heist or job together would show in action their relationships. Alice would kick butt, Hatter would be cool and calculated, and the feeling of a pirate family would have been more visceral. We would have seen them be amazing instead of Alice just waking up and complaining about this mission to capture a monster. As a reader, I felt like we had no “normal” established before the world flipped upside down. Definitely a case of too much telling and not enough showing in the beginning. If you can make it through the first third of the book it’s actually a pretty fun adventure.

Madness in Wonderland is book one in the Beyond Wonderland series that is written by Tabitha Bouldin. I have read several books by this author and have always enjoyed them. Steampunk Fiction is not my typical genre, but this book will grab you in within the first few pages. I absolutely loved Alice In Wonderland. (I like the Johnny Depp version the best) So I was excited to see where the story would take them. There is also the weaving of Frankenstein's monster throughout the story. It's an interesting pairing.

The Red Queen is wreaking havoc in Wonderland. Children are being taken and put into the Queen's Army and only the strong are surviving. Alice, Hatter and others are teaming up to try and rescue Hatter's sister. Can they pull it off?

Dr. Frank N. Stein has created an prototype soldier. Part man. Part monster. He has created him to serve the queen. He is part of the reason that everything is in chaos. However, Alice sees him for more then what the rest of Wonderland does.

The author has kept the original personalities/persona of the characters - and added her own twist. I love when books I grew up reading have been rewritten and brought more current day atmosphere. I felt that the weaving together of two classics was brilliant. The story is well written, it brings you into it within the first few pages. I hope to read more of the series.

Thank you to the author, Celebrate Lit and publisher for allowing me to read a copy of this book.

Highly imaginative, Tabitha has weaved an action-packed narrative inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

I have a familiarity with the original novel, but I shamefully admit, I've never read it. So following the characters proved difficult. However, I don't think that would take away from the overall enjoyment of the book.

I was reminded of the television series, Once Upon a Time, where the wicked witch had transported all the fairy tale persons to a modern-day village called Storybrook and no one remembered their former lives. The series had a great playoff the familiar fairy tales. This was a similar feel I got from reading Madness in Wonderland.

The author takes the reader on an adventure that starts with the first page and keeps one going, like a good western, to the very end. There's romance, their's vengeance, there's redemption, and friendship, as well as forgiveness; all the elements that make a good story. And just when everything looks like it's going to work out, there's another Law and Order plot twist.

Well done, Tabitha. I recommend this book. I was given a copy for my honest opinion.

What a unique and fun book! It’s a part retelling of a story tale, a bit of a classic novel, and a good chunk straight from the author’s imagination as well. And of course, it’s 100% just a great read.

You’ve got Alice in Wonderland meets I don’t even know what but it’s amazing and I honestly think I’ll be rereading this book in the near future. Plus, it’s so good that I know my kids are okay to read it and love it as much as I do.

If you’re looking for a book that’s okay for teen readers this is it! Plus it’s exactly the type of book my teens’ love which is a bonus. Oh, and this author is fantastic. I love all of the books by this author that I’ve read and I highly recommend her. She’s hilarious and her characters come to life in such a way that you really think you are in their world, or they are in your world or maybe it’s all the same?!

Tabitha Bouldin has created a rich world of intriguing characters that will keep you reading late into the night. I know. I stayed up way too late reading the story. The mash-up of Wonderland and Frankenstein's monster is interesting enough on its own, but the author has woven well-known details from the original work into the story to make it familiar and comfortable while at the same time all-together new and interest grabbing.

While I love Alice and her heart for others to see beyond the obvious, my favorite character was Hatter. From the moment he was introduced, he caught and held my attention. Capitalizing on his trademark madness, the author has created a complex character that is still relatable and lovable. And in the middle of all the wonder and chaos of Wonderland, the author has delivered a story with depth and meaning. It's a story I plan to revisit and pass on to all the readers in my family. Madness in Wonderland deserves more than the allotted five stars.

What I think you should know:
Madness in Wonderland by Tabitha Bouldin is the first book in the Beyond Wonderland Series. It is a Fantasy, Steampunk, retelling/ mashup with a Christian perspective. This story is a combo of Alice In Wonderland and Frankenstein.

What I think about this book:
I have never been the biggest fan of Alice In Wonderland, but I am a huge fan of Bouldin and love a good mashup/ retelling so I was excited to give this version a try. I am so glad that I did, this was a delightful retelling that kept enough original details to make it recognizable while giving it enough action and originality to captivate me. Between Alice, Hatter and Alpha there were so many wonderful characters in this story, it was really hard for me to pick a favorite, each character weaved together to make the perfect combination for this unforgettable story. I can’t wait to read the next addition to the series!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

The steampunk drama keeps readers plunging through the pages to see what could possibly happen next. This tale is quite involved, with so many characters and so much going on that I sometimes felt as lost as the characters seemed at times. This is one to read more slowly so you don’t miss things, or you may get confused. The book is filled with so many surprises and twists that it may make your head swim. It includes characters from the original Alice in Wonderland story and throws Dr. Frank N. Stein and his robotic creatures into the mix. This Alice is a fighter and skilled with the sword. I didn’t expect the novel to contain so much violence, so it’s a book that should appeal to guys too—I would suggest teens and older. We all want to see good triumph over evil, and this story pits those against each other over and over until you wonder which side will win. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

Malice in Wonderland by Tabitha Corvin
📍High-stakes battles
📍Unlikely alliance
📍Whimsy meets darkness
📍Pirate Alice
📍 No spice romance, a kiss
Genre: Steampunk retelling
Retelling of Alice in Wonderland and Frankenstein. When Alice encounters this being, she sees beyond his exterior to a glimmer of humanity, and nothing will stop her from attempting to save the monster from himself...
I think overall I ended up not quite being the audience for this one. I enjoyed the Alice in Wonderland side but not the Frankenstein parts. I also felt there was a lot more darkness than whimsy here. I did enjoy all the nods to the original Wonderland, but not Alpha's storyline (I felt his love interest was totally out of the blue). I may continue the series in the future, but it won't be a priority.
Book 1 in the Beyond Wonderland series
Opening line: "'We’re going to talk treason before I’ve even had tea?' What had Wonderland become?"

Madness in Wonderland starts off Tabitha Bouldin’s Beyond Wonderland series. I have enjoyed previous books from this author and was excited to have the opportunity to read this one. Even though it is not part of my go to genre, I still thought it was pretty good. It is a fun twist to the Alice in Wonderland and Frankenstein stories. I enjoyed how the author was able to pull this off and shows how talented her writing is. It was full of action and adventure that held my attention from start to finish.

I am giving Madness in Wonderland four stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading fantasy and science fiction. I look forward to seeing what happens next in the Beyond Wonderland series.

I received a digital copy of Madness in Wonderland from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

A take-off on the tale of Alice in Wonderland, this book examines the life of Alice as a pirate. She works with Hatter to free Hatter’s sister. I found the story slow to start with, and the storyline failed to keep my interest. Maybe my lack of interest in the original Alice in Wonderland affected my judgment of this book, or perhaps the spin on the story failed to live up to my wishes. But I believe if you enjoy takeoffs of fairy tales, you should definitely check out this book for yourself.

I wish I could say I loved this book, but I found it difficult to get into initially, and then I found it hard to stay interested. While I personally found this book less than my cup of tea, I believe many will find it interesting.

So check out this book for yourself.
