During the last four years or so, I've been both catching up on my manga backlog, and taking an effort to find newer titles to try, and--ideally--follow long-term. When available, I sample three volumes of a new discovery before deciding whether to buy more of it. (And that's why half of my [admittedly small] front hall is amassing a growing stack of boxes full of manga I read and/or sampled, and decided not to keep and/or continue with.)

If the star rating of this volume didn't give it away for you already, this is a series that didn't quite work for me.

I'd say that alt-history is a hard sell for me, but I'm thoroughly enjoying Ooku, which is exactly that. Both this and Ooku have a good amount of violence and grim events. So it isn't those elements in themselves that are making this story a tough one for me to enjoy.

I kind of hate war stories--or, at best, tolerate war scenes in stories where I appreciate the characters--and this is all war, all the time. The "one size fits all" medieval Europe-like setting doesn't particularly help its cause, either, but I've read enough isekai and villainess stories, with their incredibly generic settings, that that doesn't bother me all that much any more...

The art's fairly good, if somewhat lacking in distinctive flair, and there are some awesome full-page set pieces. Julius and Aleks are character types that would normally be a heady dose of catnip for me, but here... not really. Maybe it's because, very early on, the story established that death and betrayal are always just around the corner, making me unsure of any given character's longevity, and therefore reluctant to grow attached to them. Or maybe there's something lacking in the storytelling that makes me unable to feel the characters' bonds with each other strongly enough.

Well, who knows. I can spend some more time trying to figure out why I'm indifferent to this title, or I can acknowledge that not every single one is going to sink its claws in me, and press on to the dozens of others that are waiting for my attention. I sampled this series based on a complimentary YouTube review by someone whose tastes match mine fairly closely, and I can easily see this appealing to readers with a taste for stories about strength in adversity.

Freya is a simple village girl whose foster brothers have joined Prince Edvard against Sigurd. When the prince is poisoned she becomes him to save one of her brothers. Now she’ll have to pretend to be the cunning prince and lead her loyal knights to save Tyr.

Freya has a big task in Prince Freya vol 3 - save a fort of inexperienced and under powered men from an invading army. And she worries she won’t be able to do it without the Prince’s overwhelming charisma. Instead she proves she has something more powerful - heart.

I’m a little uncomfortable at how many men in her life kiss her and she acts like nothing has happened. But I do really love the empowering message Freya gives girls about what it means to be strong and rule the world.

The art is quite pretty or at least the characters are all eye candy. I loved the art in the cliffhanger at the end! There aren’t really any twists, everything is too obvious for that but Prince Freya will move you with her passion and will to succeed, even if she cries at times.

I had to wait a few days before I could pick up volume 3 after the way volume 2 ended. I wasn't prepared for another heartbreak in this volume too. Freya still has a lot to learn but she has come such a long way in just 3 volumes. I love how she's making the role fit for the kind of person that she is while still also trying to be strong for those who are looking to her for support. Definitely, a new favorite series and I can't wait for more.

4.5 Stars!!

I received a copy of this from Netgalley and Viz Media. Thank you so much!

After the stellar second volume of Prince Freya getting a copy of volume three wasn't something that was ever in doubt, but after reading something that makes me immediately want to re-read it I always feel hesitation that the next volume one won't up to the previous one. I'm so happy to say that Prince Freya Vol. 3 lives up to that massive shadow that the second one cast.

After that last ending we hit the ground running in this one and boy it is a freaking marathon of action and feels. I'm so in love with how much time this story spends developing the world, focusing on the turmoil that the war is causing, AND giving us characters that make an impact.

I don't want to say too much about the plotline in this, but we do see some more clashing between Tyr and Siguard and how Freya rises to the occasion. I'm so impressed with her. She feels fear, despair, anger, and grief but she also knows she can't wilt anymore and I think the balance between of her being Freya and her being the prince is so well done. I'm also happy we get to learn more about our White Knight, and I have to say I'm enjoying him a lot more now that I can see a little of what makes him tick. And I'm living for those little rare instances of genuine emotion he has.

This has another amazing ending and I'm already dying to get the next volume which I think comes out towards the beginning of next year sometime

THE AMOUNT OF SCREAMING AND CRYING I DID WITH THIS VOLUME!!!

If you were devastated by the end of Vol 2, Vol 3 will perk you right up! This volume was intense, like the previous 2, but we also see Freya starting to lead in her own way, and to bring the White Knight to his knees. There is now officially a love triangle that has surfaced within the series, and I am really curious how things are going to go from here.

The political climate of this particular volume was amazing as well. We learn more about those threatening the kingdom that Freya leads, and we learn that they have more moles than we originally anticipated.

This series is creeping it's way into all time favorite territory, and I can't even be mad about it! PLEASE READ IT!

Okay, this is where my like for the series plummeted—FAST.

First the positives—the battle scenes and whole defending the fort with little odds of success plus Freya encouraging the men were all very well done, especially Freya’s speech. The return of a certain character at the very end was greatly appreciated too. 😉

HOWEVER. That’s where my like of the story ends. There is one scene where Julius decides to make an upset Freya eat something by putting it in his mouth and…kissing her to feed her. 🤢 I’m sorry, WHAT?!?!? Wasn’t there a BETTER way he could have done that?!?!? It was probably supposed to be sexy or romantic or something, but I just found it gross and it TOTALLY ruined the whole story for me. Not to mention he’s like 23 and Freya’s only 16 or 17? Yeah, double gross.

But wait, there’s more! (yay) Then during the battle someone asks Julius if he and the former prince were lovers (keep in mind this is the prince Freya is now, so they look alike and are the same age) which Julius didn’t give a yes or no too, implying that it’s true. And I’m just like…🤢😬🤨😮 WHAT THE HECK?!?!? I mean, I sorta got that implication from the first volume, but I was hoping I was wrong…sigh.

I’ll try the next one, but we’ll see if I continue the series after that.

Content: violence and blood (hard PG-13 to R); mild swearing; a kiss; an implied romantic relationship between two men (not confirmed OR denied); war; death and grief; mild suggestive hints

"I'm just Freya. I don't possess the prince's strong light. But please... I just need a little. I don't mind if it's fake. Give me light. Enough light to shine for all of them! For those who fight... for those who protect... for the living... and for the dying."

Fantastic volume. It had me on edge plenty of times. Since chapter 1 traumatized me, it kept making me think that something bad is going to happen at any time (tho it kinda did happen anyway). Prince Freya really said "What's plot armour. Can you eat it". Fighting scenes, politics, twists, a bit of mystery, lots of suspense, action. Clean 5/5 ★★★★★.

"With each injury, it's as if her light grows stronger. Even if I think of her as simply a girl who looks like the prince, general Baldr, what did you bring me?"

I've really been rooting for Prince Freya because in theory it's everything I love in a manga (girl disguised as boy/political intrigue/big battles/hints at romance that aren't the main focus...), but it never hit the right beats to make me fall in love with it. The first two volumes felt rushed and messy, with completely unearned character moments and a general feeling of wasted potential. In the author's note in this installment, however, Ishihara says that she was never sure if the story would run past 3 volumes, or if she would have to wrap up the plot in volume 3. It makes so much sense now!

Hopefully this story is now given the space to breathe that it deserves, as there's a cliffhanger at the end that has me hopeful for what's to come. The groundwork is there, I just hope we can take a bit more time to get to know the world and the characters.

I found the story in this to be gripping, since the entire plot of volume 3 was intense tension and action sequences. Freya continues to grow as a character, and you continue to learn more about Julius, so his character is finally getting fleshed out.

The plot itself isn't unique, and it's very obvious where the story's going from the first chapter. I would have liked it to be a bit more nuanced, but as the entire volume seemed less plot-focused and more character development-focused, it at least had a point.

I find the Sigurdians to be very cliche villains in this, and never once do I find myself fearing for Freya of Julius. No matter what happens, they always find their way out of every situation, so what will these three or four new villain characters really accomplish?

I do really enjoy this story. I just wish there was more nuance as a whole to it. It feels very cliche at the biggest scenes, like I've seen all of this stuff before and Freya isn't giving me anything new. But I do love Freya's character, and I really want to know more about what the crap is going on, and I want to know what happened to the other characters while Julius and Freya were at this fort, so I'll keep reading.

Embodying the Prince of Hope is hard when Freya is filled with burning hatred. As tension simmers between Sigurd and Tyr, Freya makes a deal with them until sundown. Then the massacre will start, and the hidden spy among them will reveal their identity. If they cannot find allies outside of Tyr, then what about undermining Sigurd and finding allies within? Many will lose their lives, and few will make it out alive.

". . .Oh hatred may you burn quietly . . . so that I may serve as their "Prince of Hope."

Prince Freya Vol 3 was my favorite volume out of the three I've read so far. This one really takes the reader into the heat of battle, there is a lot of clashing of swords and political maneuvering and moves. Freya is learning what it means to be a leader, and by showing her soldiers more love, she will have to deal with the cost of the pain when they die.

The pressure and emotional gravity of everything happening was felt by me. I feel like Keiko Ishihara did a great job at writing the manga to connect the reader to the characters and situations. Freya is really growing into a stronger, more brave person. The battle had a lot of tension and action, it was interesting to see Freya thrust into an environment that was completely different than what she had seen all her life.

Learning more about the soldiers who fought for Freya, transformed them from nameless faces to characters you could care about. Julius is a character who is still not growing on me, but at this point he does sometimes have his moments. Still. I miss Alek. I pray . . . HE must come back. . . pLeAsE!

"I just need a little time. I don't mind if its fake. Give me light. Enough light to shine for all of them!"
-Freya

This book had several elements I enjoyed and appreciated. . . however, certain scenes I found completely unnecessary. Overall a good series so far!

Today's manga post is on Prince Freya, Vol. 3 by Keiko Ishihara. It is 192 pages long and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover has Julius with his sword drawn and Prince Edvard reflected in his sword. As it is the third volume in the series, you need to have read the first two volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes epic historical stories with a strong female lead. There is no foul language, no sex, and violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main character, Freya. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the manga- Freya is determined to help the soldiers trapped in the besieged Fort Leren, but with reinforcements days away, the only thing she has to offer them is her presence and everything it represents. But how can she embody the Prince of Hope when she is consumed by anger?

Review- This volume picks right where the last volume left off. With Freya still trying to learn how to lead and how to handle her emotions about all the death around her. Julius is trying to help her as best he can but Freya has to find her own way. When they are betrayed from within the fort, Freya has to pull herself together and lead. The plot is the main focus in this manga and it is a very driving force, so much so that the characters are secondary to it. Not what I normally like but it is a nice change of pace for me, so I am willing to see where this story goes. Very intense plot and the battle scenes are very intense too. This manga is not for everyone but I would recommend trying it.

I give this volume a Four of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

I’m starting to grow such an immense love for this manga series, my heart can’t take it. Read this in under an hour; the story flowed very well imo.

I’ve fallen even more in love with Freya’s character, the way she presents herself is admirable and I can’t help but root for her. Especially when things keep seeming to go wrong every time they have the upper hand (plot twists that were just ahhh), but she still manages to find a way.

Also Freya’s relationship with Julius and his with Prince Edvard are so... interesting? And complex. It was cool seeing more of that in this volume, especially since Freya and Edvard are such different people.

Talking about characters, I absolutely adore the way Keiko Ishihara designs her other characters. I feel like more often than not side characters in manga will seem so out of place— either by being so bland you ignore them or so detailed that it’s obvious they’ll have an important part to play in the story.

Each of the new characters introduced (and there were a lot) have clear personality traits and appearances that set them apart from others without being too “out there”. The unique characters makes for more entertaining dialogue!

As always the art is *mouah*, and the ending page is very pretty once again. Exciting ending, anticipating the next volume!

P.S. The bonus chapter included is adorable. I’m a sucker for Prince Edvard and can’t get enough of him— seeing early interactions with the rest of the gang, Aaron included (rip) was nice. Aleksi being cute as per usual.

There's less feels to hurt my heart in this volume, though there's still some feels going on. Here we have an angry Freya, looking for revenge on those who have taken what she loves away from her. She and Julius enter Fort Legen, a small fort filled with inexperienced soldiers, to give them hope so they can hold on until reinforcements can get there. This works for a while; unfortunately, there is a spy in the fort, feeding information to Sigurd's troops outside. Things come to a head when the enemy finds a back way in, and begins to storm the front gate. Will Freya and Julius be able to cut off the enemy and rally the Legen soldiers? Will reinforcements arrive in time? Will we get a cliffhanger ending again? You know the last one's a given....
Freya's character continues to grow, and is starting to come into her own in the role of Prince Edvard. We get a little more insight into Julius' character, and a bonus chapter that shows a scene from the past with Aaron and Aleksi, as well as Julius and Prince Edvard. I like the Edvard flashbacks; they give us a chance to see the differences between his rule, and how Freya is handling princedom. The art, as always, is beautiful, with a dreamy vibe that adds to the fairy tale feel of the story. Now I gotta find Volume 4.....

This volume wasnt as good as the others, Freya did have some really good development but everything else was ok. My main issue was the villains being very cliche. One of the plot points is there is a spy in the mist and I already knew who it was. I wish there was more build up.

For me there seemed to be a disconnect between this volume and the others, I couldn't seem to remember who was who or if any of the characters where ones we already knew. This falls in line with what I was saying with they spy reveal, I would like to see more build up in future volumes.

The biggest thing I did not like is the weird relationship Freya and Julius seem to be forming. It seems very sexual and there are hints that Julius loved the prince, both the prince and Freya are very young so its kinda....well for a lack of a better term....eew

I do know what happens next, but if future volumes dont development better plot points, villains and drop the weird Freya and Julius relationship I'm not sure I will continue reading it.

The first volume was amazing and really set the bar.

Many thanks to netgalley for my review copy.

Prince Freya vol 3 sees Freya struggling in the role of Prince Edvard, the Prince of Hope. She has already lost a lot in taking on the role of the prince and her losses see her embracing anger, an understandable but not good look on her. Struggling to rally the soldiers at the besieged Fort Leren and facing impossible odds Freya does her best to uplift the spirits of her countrymen and fight off the Sigurd army all while keeping the secret that she is not the prince.

The third volume is maybe my favorite volume so far, we get to see more of Freya’s spiral and get a little more into the white knight, Julius, and his thoughts. I have a feeling this is going to be a long series but if it keeps up this pacing I’ll happily stick along for the ride.

I'll be honest, I thought that I had read the second one but apparently I didn't??? Which kind of explains why I was confused the entire time I was reading this. Although I did get the feeling that things happened previously that I would not have agreed with anyway.

I don't think I'll be continuing with this series. Too many things have happened that I don't agree with simply for the purpose of shock value. This happened in this installment as well and I don't like that trope. Never have, and never will.

So, unfortunately, while the first installment of this manga series held promise, I will not be continuing with this.

Volume 3 is probably the strongest read of the series so far. I liked seeing more character development from Freya and watching her find resolve with her choices. I do find her characters a bit baffling, however, as I just don't buy into the idea that she could pull off pretending to be the charismatic Prince Edvard. I'm just not wholly convinced of the story's premise just yet as Freya seems very meek and helpless. When she finds the courage within herself to act, I find myself not really believing it to be possible. The side characters, namely Julius, seem far more interesting and their motivations are more nuanced. That being said, the plot of this series continues to heat up, and the unpredictability of the narrative makes it fun to read.

4,5 stars. I really like the story and there's a lot of beautiful big panels. I especially loved a full two-page spread of Freya when she, as Prince Edvard, rallied the remaining soldiers to defend against the Sigurdian soldiers near the end of the volume. I dropped that half star (=one star because GR...) mostly because somehow I feel it was treading in place a bit.

Freya is alternating between feeling weak and finding something to pick up her again. Being princely is still difficult and in this volume she's less trying to imitate Edvard and more just trying to lead and that's something I like seeing (even though it of course might bring problems later if their scheme is revealed...).

I was only a few pages into this volume when I realized that the design style and intensity reminds me of Requiem of the Rose King, Vol. 1 (obsessed with this series beyond reason), but definitely stands on its own in regards to storytelling and, you know, just being so damn beautiful.

HOW DARE THIS SERIES PLAY WITH MY EMOTIONS SO MUCH. and the next English translated volume doesn't come out until JANUARY.

This series has made me laugh, cry, scream, and cheer all in just a few pages. Nothing has gone quite the way I thought it would, and with the way it ended I am so excited for the next volume!
