About the author

Takahashi (高橋和希) started as a mangaka in 1982. His first work was Tokiō no Tsuma (闘輝王の鷹), published in 1990. One of his earliest works was Tennenshokudanji Buray (天然色男児BURAY), which lasted for two volumes and was published from 1991 to 1992. Takahashi did not find success until 1996 when he created Yu-Gi-Oh!

battle city begins!!!

What a packed volume. Now with the Duelist arc over we get to move forward into new things. The introduction of the god cards will only get more interesting as this new battle city arc goes on. The dice mini game volume was quite fun and an interesting game. The writer really knows how to make fun board games. The writer on the other hand always finds the most convenient card or something to give our protagonist the most out of nowhere advantage. Like plan ahead instead of putting all the weight in one card. This new arc looks very promising since it showcases some answers for the pharaoh, like we are 18 volumes in and the character has mostly nothing to him. Finally moving the plot forward. One criticisms is the fact that they rehash the same premise again for this arc. Win a duel get a piece that will allow you to be a finalist. The whole card ante is entertaining at least. Having the group separated does feel weird. Lastly, the new rules for dueling are such a huge improvement to the manga, it will hopefully make the duels more strategic and challenging.

I was moving full-steam-ahead with finishing Naruto and Bleach, but Uniqlo had Yu-Gi-Oh! shirts and one had Silent Magician and Silent Swordsman on the back so I felt compelled to try finishing this manga. I've also owned the complete series before completing collection of the other two. When I think about it, it's kind of weird Uniqlo made a shirt of the very last battle in YGO when other manga in this new wave of graphic tees weren't quite so far. For Naruto, the latest depiction of the four shirts is Sasuke's Susanoo in its basic unarmored form. For Bleach, it actually has Ichigo in his True Shikai with the Stern Ritter visible, so it's pretty advanced. YGO is weird because there's a shirt of Kaiba with three Blue-Eyes from Death-T, a shirt of Yugi's Duelist Kingdom aces (plus Exodia), and a shirt of Toon World and Toon Summoned Skull... then skipping all the way to a shirt reflecting the Ceremonial Duel. No Battle City shirts whatsoever.

Volume 16: A rival game store, Black Crown, opens across the street from Kame Game. Ryuji Otogi plans to take revenge on Yugi because his father lost a game to Sugoroku, making him have to dress as a clown(?). Ryuji fools Jonouchi at school with a dice game and a trump game before Dark Yugi takes over to punk Ryuji back. Ryuji's father abducts Yugi within the store for a secret battle against Ryuji in Dungeon Dice Monsters. The Millennium Puzzle is stolen for the father's revenge, but also because Ryuji wants to battle the real Yugi as the game master who solved the Puzzle. Yugi gets his ass beat at DDM until Ryuji hypes him up by saying he wants to fight the real Yugi on purpose. The tables turn. We learn Yugi's grandpa was a badass back in the day. Ryuji's father disassembles the Puzzle. Dark Bakura senses the Puzzle being dismantled and comes to the store. Dark Bakura reflects that since the Millennium Items are connected he must protect Yugi as the bearer of the Puzzle, so he gives Yugi a bit of a pep talk. Yugi summons Armored Wizard Pazoo, but it only has 0 ATK. Volume end.

Volume 17: Dark Bakura tells Yugi he's been chosen for the duty of awakening the King's memories. Yugi activates Pazoo's secret ability, turning him into a shield for his Dungeon Master. On the next turn, Pazoo becomes a sword capable of defeating Orgoth (with the stats of Dark Magician, and some cool ass paneling!), subsequently defeating Ryuji (even though we don't actually see him land the last hit on Ryuji's Dungeon Master...). Dark Bakura's internal monologue tells us he can imprint part of his soul onto a piece of Puzzle to try and spy on the King's memories. Ryuji's father chokes Yuji with the chain of the Puzzle, takes him to a secret room featuring the Devil's Board Game he lost against Sugoroku to, and begins building the Puzzle, only to get sucked into the King's labyrinth. The room catches fire, so Yugi hurries to rebuild the Puzzle while Jonouchi arrives to save him. Later, Kaiba is invited to an Egyptologist exhibit at a museum by Ishizu Ishtar, who shows him a stone tablet about the ancient Egyptian origin of Duel Monsters, featuring a depiction of a Pharaoh resembling Yugi using Black Magician to fight a "White Beast" summoned by a priest resembling Kaiba. The Pharaoh from the tablet has a lost name. Also present are images of the hidden Egyptian Gods, whom Pegasus revived as rare cards, and the master of all three would be called Duel King. Kaiba is given The God of the Obelisk, which proves stronger than the three Blue-Eyes summoned by the Duel Computer when testing. Dark Yugi goes on a date with Anzu, where they see the tablet in the museum. Kaiba announces Battle City. Yugi and Jonouchi get Duel Disks to be eligible for the tournament. A Rare Hunter ambushes Jonouchi at night to take his Red-Eyes by using an illegal Exodia deck. Volume end. (There weren't a lot of games in this volume, so there was a lot of plot development...)

Volume 18: The Rare Hunter takes Red-Eyes. His internal monologue reveals the Ghouls already have Osiris and Ra. Kaiba announces the start of the tournament, wherein eight finalists must each collect six Puzzle Cards to find the site of the finals. Yugi challenges the Rare Hunter for Red-Eyes, defeating him by using Lightforce Sword and Chain Destruction to destroy all his Right Arms. The Rare Hunter is taken over by Marik, who announces himself against Yugi. Jonouchi refuses to accept Red-Eyes until he can prove himself worthy of the card, and a duel with Yugi. Jonouchi challenges the psychic, Esper Roba. Jonouchi catches Esper cheating, but Esper can still kick ass legitimately with Jinzo. Jonouchi turns the tables with Roulette Spider and wins, gaining Jinzo. Kaiba bullies a rando with Obelisk. Marik becomes aware his sister Ishizu gave Obelisk to Kaiba, and sends a new Rare Hunter after Yugi. Yugi is confronted by Pandora, another Duelist who uses Dark Magician. Volume end.

I just love this series, even if that’s my nostalgia talking, it’s just so much fun to see my childhood in a different way and to see how the show was inspired from these.
I also appreciate how I can read through a duel as fast as I want whereas when I’m watching the show it seems to take forever for the characters to get through one battle.

Now I remember why I dropped off reading this series. It’s goofy stuff for kids! The monsters designs are still charming but all of the “power of friendship” stuff is just plain dumb. I’m too old to get much out of this, I should have been reading this when I was in fourth grade, that’s the perfect age for this series.

Ah yes, Vol 17, my favourite in the entire series. SO many feels, the start of the journey and the next turning point in Yugi & Atem's relationship, and then of course there's "The Date" XD Which is hilarious in every version.

Battle City is another excellent arc. It's one of the most well-done arcs around, so I'm incredibly fond of getting to read it.

Actual rating 3.5, I don't really care for the Sugoroku vs Yugi battle but this volume did start one of my favourite arcs which is the battle city tournament which is always fantastic
