I usually make it a rule not to write reviews for anything less than 3 stars but I felt an explanation was in order. When I was a kid I loved Mad Magazine. I had a bunch of the original ones with the dense (Rivet Men) drawings and warped sense of humor. I collected the magazines and laughed at the parodies they provided. Then, somewhere along the line I stopped reading them and they faded from memory. I had actually thought they had ceased production so was surprised when I saw this reprint of a Christmas issue in the magazine rack at the checkout of the grocery store. I know. Never, ever buy anything in the cashier line, but, it was Mad Magazine. How could I not?

Well, I could have just set fire to my money I suppose and had as much enjoyment, yet I didn't and wasted it on this rag. I have been having a few experiences lately that revolve around the theme of, "You can't go home again." This was another example of the adage proving true. The humor was insipid, the parodies were uninspired, and much of it was just plain old boring! Which brings me to why I am writing a review. I will feely acknowledge that this was the same type of material I had enjoyed many years ago. The content hasn't altered, I have. So for a mature adult, this is not likely going to be your cup of tea. But, if you are a rebelling adolescent? Dig in.

On the other hand, maybe the old stuff was just better, you know?

This was fun. There is some old stuff that I remember from my childhood, even older stuff from before my time, and a lot of newer stuff that I had never seen. Source issues range from 1963 to 2019. It felt good to see the art of Sergio Aragones, David Berg, and Al Jaffee once again. Sadly, there is nothing in here by Don Martin.

Have you gone MAD?

I found this in my sock, hanging over the fireplace on Christmas morning. The MAD Stocking Stuffer content has all the look & feel of a classic MAD magazine, but the pages are glossy and full-color while the subject material is all Christmas-centric, full of satire, cynicism and stickin’ it to the man. It's okay for whiling away some idle time during the holidays. A lot of it is amusing but mostly dumb. Some of it is very strange, some redundant, and occasionally, something is laugh out loud funny, but I consistently love admiring the artwork and sight gags throughout. Admittedly, I couldn’t resist sharing some content with the family, which met with mixed (but not unexpected) results. Some of the content are clearly outdated retreads from MAD magazine back issues, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I don’t think David Letterman has had a holiday monologue in a while, nor have I seen Pepsi Holiday Spice gracing the grocery store shelves recently.

I'm not convinced the MAD Stocking Stuffer is worth the price tag, and I'm not even sure what target demographic they're going for, but if you're a fan of MAD magazine or Saturday Night Live, you might get a kick out of it.

This book grabs Christmas themed comics and articles from previously released Mad Magazine issues and crams them into a book full of holiday silliness.

I liked this book and had a lot of fun reading it during Christmas time. Some jokes are very out of date and some are very against the grain by todays standard, but that is what Mad always was. If you're sensitive in anyway, you may want to steer clear of this. But if you're that sensitive, why are you even on goodreads reading this review?

Even though I enjoyed it, I gave it 3 stars due to the fact that there is some filler content in here. I would almost rather have a shorter book with banger material in it than a longer one with articles that just aren't funny, but what can you do?

I was a dedicated MAD reader growing up so how could some reprints not be great? This collection ended up being very dull and most of the jokes really haven’t aged well.
