The dialogue felt like it was written by someone who had heard of 'people' but never actually met any of them irl.

Lordy that was a hard read at times because of the nature of the backgrounds of both characters.
However, that's not to say it's all angsty or depressing reading, not by a long stretch.
There's plenty of emotion and humour to help balance out a story which is at its heart, about learning to accept yourself, including the painful parts, to be able to move on.
Both Benny and Gino had experiences which had the potential to leave them permanently broken both emotionally and physically.
But each had a solid core of strength which they didn't really acknowledge to themselves even though it was clear to others.
Finding the courage to deal with their pasts and accept that the other saw something special in them was only the start. There's no magic dick here.
Nice to see Ash making a guest appearance here too, he's one of my favourite characters of Felice's.
I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes next.

I was thrilled when I found out that Felice Stevens was writing an angstier book than usual. There is always plenty of drama in her books, but the angst is usually minimal. Here she has brought it all back.
While we’ve met Gino and Benny before, this is their fully contained love story. We know that Benny has been crushing hard on his co-worker Gino, while Gino has been busy sleeping with every man in the gym except Benny, but the reasons why are about to come clear.
The book is part of the Rock Bottom series and Gino is going to define it here. Watching Gino’s downward spiral was painful and upsetting. It was sometimes difficult to read with my heart in my throat more than once. Benny seems to have it all together, but he is also plagued by fears, insecurities and the pain of old wounds. Both are faking it through life, trying to hide the pain inside and hide their truth from everyone around them.
Going into the book I thought Benny would be the one to really get to me, but it was Gino. He’s been so beaten down, he can’t see beyond what others have labelled him and is full of self-doubt and no self-esteem no matter how beautiful he may be. He can’t even believe it when Benny, the person he respects more than anyone, tells him he is worthy of so much more than he thinks. Benny isn’t so different from Gino and is bearing so much responsibility. The two make a great support system for each other as friends, before things turn romantic. Once the two get together, it’s very clear that nobody will be able to get between them and the only real potential problem is them not getting their heads on straight.
I loved that we get to follow Gino and Benny on a journey not only to finding love with each other, but also to them accepting themselves, dealing with their pasts and getting the help they need to make sure their future is on the right track. There are plenty of old friends along to help these two, and if you’ve read her other books, you’ll recognize them all. I’ll say it again that the way Felice Stevens creates families of friends is always a touching part of any of her stories.
The only issue I had with the story is that there were a few times I felt that certain conversations and thoughts became repetitive. Besides that slight niggle, this is an uplifting, friends to lovers story. While there is plenty of angst in the first half (again I love angst so yay!) there is a wonderful payoff in the end.

I adored Broken Silence, the first book in the Rock Bottom series, and was super excited to get my hands on Imitation of Life. I needed more of the side characters I grew to love so much and had high hopes for this one.
Although I enjoyed Imitation of Life, I’m going to be honest and say I did not enjoy it as much as I enjoyed Broken Silence. Broken Silence was a strong four-star rating, more of a four-point-five-star rating, whereas Imitation of Life was a rounded up rating. It was close enough to be given a four-star rating instead of a three-star rating, but it wasn’t quite all the way there.
Although Imitation of Life was addictive, I never quite felt the connection to the story that I had expected. There were so many things to experience throughout this one, and some elements were easier to connect with that others. I was certainly hooked, I enjoyed the way everything came together, but it didn’t hit me quite as hard as Broken Silence. I think, in part, it’s because I didn’t really ship the characters as much as I’d expected to.
Overall, an enjoyable second book in the Rock Bottom series. It wasn’t quite as enjoyable as the first, but it had me hooked. I’m now desperately awaiting the third.

Imitation of Life so far is the hardest book I read from Felice.
I was waiting for Gino and Benny's story and thought that they're going to have a sweet story, and nothing really hard in their life. Once again, Felice proved me wrong.
I was a bit pissed off with Gino before I read their story, because, who would rejected the sweet Benny? And I when I thought Gino was a player, I was wrong again.
My heart hurt for Gino. For how much he sell himself short and cheap, for what he had been through all this time.
I read Imitation of Life with a knot in my stomach, shed a tears and cursing Felice for making Gino's life miserable.
And love her for playing with my emotion so thoroughly. Gino and Benny had to walk in a hard road before finding their happily ever after.
And I'm glad Felice granted me that no matter what, they deserved their HEA.
Recommended!

What was my favorite part of the book was having Noah,Jeremy, Oren and Ash in the book. 😊 Both characters Gino and Benny just seemed to be a hot mess and they both needed reassurances from each other constantly! 😱🤪

Benny and Gino. I've been waiting for their story since they appeared in Perfect, and holy hell, were they worth the wait. But man, these guys ripped my heart out, absolutely shredded it. Felice Stevens may not do angst often, but when she does, watch out! Tissues. You'll need them. For both the happy and sad tears. The things they go through as they find their way through life together-yep. Tissues.
And wow. What a beautiful story, full of love and hope and second chances. I fell deep for Benny and Gino, and I hung on every word as they fought life's demons until they got their hard-earned HEA. Added bonus: As often occurs in a Felice Stevens book, I got to visit with some old friends, which always makes my heart happy.
Another one in the win column for Felice Stevens, but I'm not surprised. Her talent for storytelling and ability to create multi-faceted characters with depth and emotion blows me away every time. It's clear that she focuses and works hard at her craft, and it is very appreciated.
That being said, I've put the tissues away and I'm ready for my snarky Ross story. Any day now....

I’ve been curious and waiting for Gino and Benny’s story since I spot them on Felice’s others book. Deep down in my heart I always knew that both Gino and Benny have their own story that worth to tell. The story that will broke another heart and brought tears to many readers…
“You and me ain’t so different. We both got fucked over by people we trusted. But we went in different directions, neither of which is healthy. I cut myself off from people, and you—”
“Fucked everything in sight.”
Benny and Gino…
Two broken souls with traumatic past, being hurt by people they trust. One closed his life from the world while the other one grow up with very low self trust and need to learn how to value himself.
In their life, they desperately seeking for someone to accept and love them for who they are. Both Benny and Gino trying to imitated perfect lives because the reality was too harsh for them.
We’d both pretended to be happy, our lives a pale imitation of what we wanted but didn’t believe we deserved.
Deep down in their heart they love each other, but Benny always thought that Gino could never seen him because he’s too plain and ordinary…nothing.
And Gino, my poor Gino – always thought that the well educated Benny was out of his reach because with his past, he felt dirty and not worthy enough for Benny. So, keeping Benny at the friend zone area was his only way to stay close with the only person who didn’t fall for his look or body…
Will these two poor guys finally found their happiness?
The way the author woven their story and conflicts are amazing. Through her writing, she brought us to feels their dilemmas, traumatic past, anger, sadness and the biggest fear they felt…losing people they care the most and love…
The family values and friendships are the other things that made this reading could warmed your heart, very engaging and completely hard to put down.

Imitation of life by Felice Stevens is one emotional read. Phew. What these men have been through most would crumble. I felt like I had been waiting forever to get Benny and Gino's story. From the minute I heard Felice was giving them a book, I was super excited.
Sweet sweet Benny and Gregorius Gino.... Was theirs an unrequited love? Destined to only be friends? Benny had been pining for Gino for years. He assumed, he was totally invisible to his beautiful friend....
But Gino saw the real Benny and he thought Benny was perfect. Could their feelings be mutual? Insecurities and fear kept them apart,
but they were always there for one another. Cheering each other on. I love them so much!! Two lost souls, who from the outside seem totally put together, meanwhile on the inside they were a mess. Both have suffered and survived horrendous acts of cruelty. Dealing with it quite differently... Benny rather be closed off and alone, while Gino looked for love and acceptance in all the wrong places. The things they endured broke my heart!! I just wanted to reach into the book and hug them. With patience, compassion and acceptance their relationship bloomed and transformed into something magical.
Could they be two pieces of a whole? With the help of their friends, they began to mend and evolve. It was so awesome having some of the past characters show up. I loved how perfectly Feliced weaved them all into the story. Proving family isn't just blood relatives. It's the friends who are there for you no matter what! In the end, Benny and Gino were blessed to have each other and the support of their friends.

Benny has been crushing on Gino from afar for years. He feels like he will never be enough for him. Gino feels like he is not enough for Benny.
Great, angsty read. Both guys are broken, yet need each other to heal. Sweet love story. Benny’s relationship with his sister is adorable. A great book about the healing power of love.

Angst Squared
When Felice Stevens decides to toss in the angst, she doesn't do it with a shovel. Rather, she mounts the back hoe and just dumps it all over her MCs and leaves them under a pile of dirt and rubbish that needs more than a couple of friends to clean up the mess.
Such is the case with Benny Demarco and Gino Acosta, two lower middle class late 20's from Brooklyn who work at the gym owned by Jeremy Strauss of "Perfect," one of the three books in Stevens' Soulmates series. In that one Jeremy was pushing these two together but without much success.
The reasons are fully explored in the opening chapters of this one--mostly because both Benny, who is the operations manager of the gym, and Gino (on the cover), the stunning model-in-training and all around customer service guy at the gym, have identical trust issues as well as very similar personal family histories of abuse and neglect. The back and forth between these two is shaped in the first two POV chapters where they admit to the reader that the other one is the crush of his life.
After that we are on a sometimes gut-wrenching but eventually smoldering and then scorching issues-plagued romance that brings in Benny's friend, the ex-con Justin and his lover Foster from the first book in the series . Eventually we also renew acquaintance with Asher Devin from "A Walk Through Fire" from her To Hell & Back series aa well as Oren Leavitt from "One Call Away" in the Soulmates series.
This is a brilliant way of bringing in a wide cross section of gay men from all walks of life and social and economic backgrounds to deal with two young men who are absolutely perfectly drawn for who they are supposed to be and where they come from.
Trust me on this--I'm from the outer boroughs and know Manhattan like the back of my hand and am constantly astounded at how Ms. Stevens gets everything right about New York City and its opportunities, drawbacks, prides and prejudices. In the end this is what makes this book work, and when it takes off, there's no turning back.
I think everyone who reads this one will know which characters may get their own book in the future, but until then this one is another jewel in the increasingly heavy crown of virtual perfection that sits on Ms. Stevens' head.

In the end this is what makes this book work, and when it takes off, there's no turning back.
I think everyone who reads this one will know which characters may get their own book in the future, but until then this one is another jewel in the increasingly heavy crown of virtual perfection that sits on Ms. Stevens' head.

"We all have hidden scars.." This is the first of many of my favourite quotes from Benny & Gino's book as it is so true for each of the men. They've both been through hell and back but never let it show.
"Inside I was as much of a mess as ever, doubt plaguing me every step of the way...."
This is another favourite quote and while it's said by one of the main characters, it so easily relates to them both, especially with their pasts, things they've had to go through, to do, to get to where they are now.
"Believe in yourself. Dream big. Hold onto hope. Believe you can......."
Again, a really appropriate quote for both the guys. Neither think they're good enough, not just for each other, but to achieve their dreams, yet this quote is one to give them, and anyone who reads their story, the push they need.
I do have a lo more favourite quotes which I highlighted but the two I think really stick out in regards to the story are these ~

"We imitated perfect lives because the reality was too harsh.."
Honestly, no two quotes have ever fitted a book more perfectly.
On the outside both Benny & Gino seem happy, as though they've got no worries, that life is going perfectly but, the reality is so different than the truth they show.
One of the things that really struck a chord about this story was how easily Benny & Gino masked their hurt, something which most people do every day, so as to to stops those they care about worrying about them, as though if they thought they were fine then they truly were. That was so far from the truth though, especially for Gino!
This truly was an absolutely AMAZING story, giving hope to those who need it most and showing that it's ok to not be ok, that asking for help, telling someone when things are wrong, is the right way to go.

Benny has been in love with the unattainable (to him at least) Gino for years. His lousy past has him convinced he’s just not good enough for Gino to want him other than as a friend. Every time Gino flirts with another guy or brags about one of his many hookups, Benny gets a little sadder.
Gino has it all, charm, looks, and a burgeoning career in modeling. He’s beautiful and can have any man he wants for a good time. He’s desperately unhappy but puts on a good act to the world. He wants someone who wants him for more than just a good time. His need to be loved causes bad decisions and implodes his life.
Both men will have to put their past behind them to get the future they deserve.
I liked that Benny and Gino were equal parts sweet, unsure, damaged, and clueless. Their pasts made for some sad reading. Their issues, brought about by abuse, aren’t glossed over. But that same abuse made the characters so much stronger than they believed they were.
Which shows what a skillful writer this author is. The ability to bring the readers into her story and give us believable, engaging characters is an art. She does it realistically and with heart.

Well, Felice Stevens has done it again. She has given us two amazing, beautifully written characters that will break your heart and then put it back together in the most emotional, honest, loving way.
How can you not love Benny and Gino? Two men whose broken pieces fit together like a puzzle made just for them.
One of my favorite quotes in this book is, "His hand reached for mine, and we sat with our fingers laced tightly together, two lost kids who'd found a home in each other." So perfectly said.
This is first and foremost a story about loving and caring for yourself. "Let's find your joy and get you to start living your real life". Until that is achieved you aren't really available to love others. Both Benny and Gino have survived trauma at a most vulnerable time in their lives. Each has dealt with it differently but equally as damaging to themselves.
With each other they finally see hope, faith and trust. They open up to each other and this allows them to open up to a greater support system. I loved all the men who make up this family, both blood and found. The unconditional love they give each other is the greatest gift.
This is a gorgeously written love story of survival, strength, healing, hope and growing into who you are meant to be.

This is the second book in a series but can easily be read as a stand alone. That said, there is a sense that many of the characters have established relationships and inside stories. It doesn't detract from the main story as the author does a great job fleshing out who is who.
Both Benny and Gino have a pretty rough back story. Life has not been kind. I enjoyed the innocence and overall goodness that Benny presented. He is so thoughtful and caring in all he does in life. Almost to the extent that he puts himself very last. My issue with the story is Gino. Again, you get the sense there is a history that the reader is not aware of between the characters. However, Gino is so riddled with poor self image and angst, it was difficult to keep on reading in some places. The story was dragging. I also couldn't catch the spark between these two. I know the heart wants what it wants, but Gino was not exactly welcoming or kind to Benny. They were hot together but I couldn't figure out why they would want to be together.
The story was just ok for me. Love reading this author but the angst and tension over shadowed the romance for me.

Benny & Gino’s HEA
This book just grabbed me by my heart, and wouldn’t let go until the last pages. I had so many emotions for Gino and Benny. Gino just made me want to wrap him in a warm blanket and give him all the hugs. These two men had gone through SO much in their respective childhoods and young adult lives. Benny provided such a necessary lifeline to Gino to help him understand he was a worthy person and that he deserved love and to BE loved. I loved that Gino showed Benny that the world isn’t full of darkness, and it’s ok to lean on each other and not take on life’s burdens alone. I love that they found each other and could work on finding their HEA together. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention being able to visit with some of my favorite characters from books past. Being able to hear just a little more from Noah and Oren was wonderful, and Jeremy and Blake have always held a soft spot in my heart. I couldn’t recommend Gino and Benny’s story more, and I know this is one I will pick up to read again.

Felice Stevens has dialed up the angst in this emotional friends to lovers romance and has delivered a story that examines the link between up-bringing, self-worth, family and love. Benny and Gino are two characters who at first glance are compete opposites but like with all things, once you scratch the surface, similarities are hard to ignore. Individually these two characters are fractured, together they can be whole.
Some potential trigger warnings relating to sexual and emotional abuse in this story however I really appreciated the way Felice addresses these instances and has her characters coached and encouraged to speak up and seek help for their individual situations.
I'm really liking the development of Felice's writing style and the ways she's examining some of the tougher realities of life for some gay men. I like the way she incorporates the romance into her stories and pushes her characters to be more.

October 10, 2019DNF @ 69%. This one isn't working for me *cry cry*. Benny is sweet but Gino is exhausting. The conversations feel repetitive and saccharinely 'public service announcement'. I understand that Gino has low self esteem and needs constant re-assurance, but I'm truly tired of reading it. Everyone has the same 'You're more than you think you are' speech, plus I can't really get with Gino being as naive about the world as he's presented. Justin and Foster from Book 1 were a welcome cameo.
Maybe I'll fare better with Book 3 when it's out.

Oh my heart.... It was breaking many times & finally mending again. I cried way to much. I was so happy Benny & Gino were getting their story & finally together through so much hard times and a lot of pain. I wanted to hug those men so many times, they both had a hard life. I'm so happy their working it out & can be together finally & have their HEA. I love them both so much! Story was amazing, loved it so much!

What an amazing book; I couldn't put it down! As usual, Felice Stevens hit it out of the park with another incredible book. There were parts that got me teary eyed, but I could also feel the love coming off the pages. It was great to see some "old friends" from some of her other series as well. Felice always knows how to write her characters so the reader immediately falls in love with them and feels like they're part of their world. I'm so glad I was able to be an ARC reader.

OMG!! I really fell in love with Gino and Benny. I received an ARC of this story and it was amazing. Felice has a way of writing that gets down to the nitty gritty of life. We never know what people have gone through in life a and this book just put it all out there. This book has all the feels and I had a great time reading. Highly recommend this book to all. Thanks Felice Stevens for your writing.

I have waited for Benny and Gino’s book since they were introduced to readers in “Perfect”, and I must say it was well worth the wait. Benny and Gino seem so different. Benny is shy and insecure. He’s had a huge crush on Gino since they started working together at Hard Core Fitness, but he has been too afraid to tell Gino how he feels. Gino is outgoing, confident, and a huge flirt who hooks up with lots of guys from the gym, but keeps Benny firmly in the friend zone.
When Benny finally decides to move on from his crush and start dating, Gino discovers that he doesn’t like it, and starts to notice Benny as more than a friend. Gino may be model beautiful on the outside, but he has secrets that make him anything but the confident person he pretends to be. He doesn’t think he’s worthy of anything more than Benny’s friendship. No matter how much Benny tries to move on, all he can think about is Gino. When Gino’s life starts to fall apart, Benny is there to help him pick up the pieces, and finally makes his feelings known. This books was sooo good and heartbreaking. We’ve seen these men in the past and so excited for Benny and Gino’s story.
Benny has been in love with Gino for quite some time but never felt he was good enough. Gino boy Gino. He just broke my heart. He is knows for his having sex with pretty much anyone.
When these two finally open their eyes and we see their whole stories man it is heartbreaking what their past and present gave to them. But they are survivors and stronger for it. They are two separate pieces that belong together to be whole.

Gino and Benny had similar abuse growing. Every one saw what they wanted them to see. Not until things turned difficult did their true self showed.

With troubled, damaged characters, at times this book was both moving and challenging. The author handles the characters’ experiences with delicacy, and presents their relationship in a sweet and interesting way.
The novel is a little slow moving and on occasion the plot is a tad repetitive. It was tempting to skim till I reached the dialogue, which was well written and developed.
The strong dialogue and unique characters were enjoyable and enough for me to want to follow the couple’s romantic and personal journey. Definitely worth a read.

I loved the first book in this series so was looking forward to Benny's story and this didn't disappoint. Both Benny and Gino have their fair share of issues but this story is so positive and beautiful bringing two seemingly broken men together to show each other just how special they both are. Really lovely story despite the heaviness and great to catch up with Justin and Foster as well as the myriad ither characters from Felice's other series.
