Death waits in the shadows, stalking my every move.
Family is everything. So when my sister ran away to be with her new boyfriend, I chased after her.
A strange, crimson-eyed man attacked me within minutes of my arrival, only to bring me my destiny.
Alex, an arrogant, handsome flirt, saved me. No matter how hard we try to fight our connection, we're drawn to each other.
While he reluctantly agrees to help me, I discover a terrifying new world filled with creatures that shouldn't be real; shifters; vampires; angels; witches; and so much more. I'm surrounded by supernaturals with even a silver wolf and her mate sheltering me.
Every minute I'm in Shadow Terrace becomes increasingly more dangerous, but I’ll risk everything to save my sister.
Even if it means turning my back on the man who could possibly complete my soul.
Reading has always been one of my favorite hobbies, even as a little girl. When I was a toddler, my parents would read stories to me over and over. I would hear them so often that I had the books memorized and could recite the story word by word.
My favorite genres are fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary romance. So of course that's what I'm inclined to write.
I have a husband, two young daughters, and a mini Australian Shepherd. I've lived in Tennessee the majority of my life and love the state.
I'm extremely addicted to caffeine and enjoy drinking coffee and lattes. I am so pleased that you stopped by my page! Please feel free to follow or contact me at the following pages -
First let me say I believe I should have read the Silver Wolf trilogy first. It is not necessary but I wish I had ...... so strongly suggest it.
Interesting world build. Secondary characters are strong. Storyline is strong with plenty of mystery.
I left the read feeling as if I do not really know Alex. Hoping to see that change in book 2. Broadlines on insta-love, which most of you know I am not a fan. Grey leaves just enough space for me not to have a full fledge fit over the quick I love you's.
Cannot believe the 5-star reviews! Are y'all reading the same book I just read?
Wow. Could poor Alex be stuck with a more overbearing, rude, prickly fated mate who doesn't seem to possess any manners or the ability to observe and learn from her mistakes? Even growing up in the foster care system teaches kids good manners and respectful behavior! Veronica charged and invaded unknown territory, so she's a complete stranger to its residents, and while then one vampire did lick her without permission, she keeps bristling every time someone gets pushy verbally, rightfully calling her on her disrespectful mannerisms, and fails to apologize for or realize how she is demanding they respect her and help her without any politeness or respect for them.
Veronica obviously is inexperienced, but I'm sure her foster mother taught we common courtesy. I. Disliked. Her. Immensely. I hate rude people, and worse, when those people are stupid. She hasn't displayed any intelligence or sense of self-preservation yet, and she has missed every clue as to how people are going out of their way and comfort zone for her. Nope. She's a moron. Poor Alex. Maybe she'll improve in the next book. She and Alex having intimacy and kissing all the time makes me wanna gag. One star. For more stars, make the female lead more appealing, intelligent, and respectful. Even Sterlyn was blunt, but had manners - her pushy bossiness came from her being an alpha. Veronica isn't an alpha. Yet, if ever. Again, gag on her being fated to the vampire Prince.
Kay, first off, I love Jen L. Grey. I love to read fantasy (seems to be my favorite genre) and she writes it so well. I tried to find other authors who write similar books like hers within the urban fantasy community on Amazon, but only came up with a few titles.
So the fact is, Jen writes like no one else. I love most of her stories! In fact, I bought most of her books to read. I don’t know if she will write more books that I will like, but I do plan to get some future trilogies set in the Shadow City world.
Our main character, Veronica, or Ronnie, is a human. She has come to Shadow City to find her missing sister who has fallen for a vampire. Along the way, she meets new friends and her own fated mate. As Ronnie tries to navigate this new supernatural world, she does her best to survive.
Ronnie…isn’t my favorite of all the heroines that Jen has written. Why, I still adore my precious pink haired Sadie from Hidden Mate.
However, she’s very different. Veronica learns to open up and love again. She chooses to take a bunch of risks, and doesn’t let the fact that just because she’s in a new world where things she thought didn’t exist are actually real, she adapts and pushes on. She’s brave and strong hearted. That’s what’s so admirable about her character.
I look forward to seeing more exciting series and stories from Jen! I do plan to check out more of her books in the future, and I recommend this to those who love a good urban fantasy romance.
Actually, I did love it. Silly me just had to buy the whole series to read and add to my collection.
Welcome back to Shadow City and if you thought the wolves had problems you ain't seen nothing yet. Cursed Mate is the first book in the Shadow City: Royal Vampire series and things are freaking crazy right now and for once it's not the wolves oh no, a certain vampire prince has met his match in a very feisty human and things only get crazier from there. I'm talking clueless humans, missing sisters, rogue vampires, strange magics, and a few familiar faces to help out. I loved it even if a certain redhead kinda annoyed me.
So the first trilogy set in the city centered on Sterlyn, her mate, friends, and the silver wolves and now the focus has shifted to center on Veronica "Ronnie" as she goes to Shadow City to find her missing sister, Annie. Ronnie grow-up in the foster system and it made her a little jaded towards people. While she has an open heart towards her foster mother Eliza and her foster sister Annie, Ronnie doesn't open up her heart to people. She's a loner and tends to make a lot of assumptions about people which irritated me to no end. She was also very rash and tend to make a lot of bad decisions, I know that she didn't have all the facts at first but when she did she still acted like she was prepared for things on that intense of a level like she had equal footing in the situation which let's face it, she doesn't. Ronnie is a human who just learned about the supernatural dropped in the middle of supernatural politics where the wrong step can have dangerous consequences and she can't defend herself against someone who's more powerful which is pretty much everybody. However she did win me over with the loyalty to showed to her foster sister, everything she did was for Annie. Plus how easily she fit in with Sterlyn and the gang, she opened her heart to them and was genuinely concerned for their safety. Ronnie has her issues but overall isn't that bad. There is most definitely some mystery surrounding her, things add up but then they don't, I can't wait to get some answers
You know that cocky, annoying vampire prince that popped up in Sterlyn's story well he's back and an even bigger jerk than I originally thought. Alex needs help, he's a smart-alec attitude, and the harsh things he says doesn't do him any favors, especially with Griff and the group dude just has to have an attitude all the time, must be a vampire thing. Not to mention he obviously has a connection with Ronnie but most definitely says and does the wrong things but he is willing to do right by her and protect her while she's in Shadow territory. For this, I will let it go and he does eventually get better, I'm hoping that the longer he's around Ronnie and the group the more he will change.
The saying is "something goes from zero to sixty seconds" to indicate fast pace well Curse Mate's plot started at sixty. So much happened, Annie is missing and Eliza is giving off vibes, the main character obviously has some things that don't add up, the vampire side of Shadow City, Shadow Terrace has finally been seen and it through a human's eyes. Things are very creepy and very weird there. Not to mention, weird attacks, tricky politics, and relationship drama. It's a good thing that Sterlyn and the gang are still an important part of the story, it was really cool seeing everyone through a new lens. I also loved getting to see more of the vampires in this world, to see how they interact with each other and other beings, to see their drive and thought process. It was most definitely eye-opening.
Cursed Mate was a great addition to the Shadow City universe. It was a fast and easy read with characters I was already invested in and has an entertaining plot. I need the next book in Ronnie's trilogy asap because Cursed Mate had one of Jen's most jaw-dropping, blood-draining endings I've ever read. Things are on a knife's edge and not to mention a surprising plot twist that has me asking all sorts of questions. I gotta know what's next in Shadow Bitten.
I was excited to read about Alex. He had come to help Sterlyn and the group in her books. Jen L. Grey did not disappoint. He was as tortured as they come between his family, his role with the vampires, and his mate. Veronica (Ronnie) is strong and is more than she seems. Book is fast paced with lots of action and of course the great banter between the group.
This was just bad. I have no idea what the rest of people who gave it 4/5 stars read but it can't be this book. Terrible writing. It makes you think twice at what people consider a good read. :-/
Meh niet een bijzonder boek. Redelijk voorspelbaar eigenlijk.
Intriguing story, but could be written a bit better
The premise was great, and some of the characters were easy to connect to. However, I felt that the writing was a bit rushed through some of the character growth sections, and I also felt that continuity could have used some work. I also personally didn't appreciate the expletives or the sexually explicit scenes, and it would be useful if there were some sort of warning for those for potential readers.
I was so excited when I saw this book in my Amazon main page. I am a complete fan of Vampire/Mate/I-dont-know-supernaturals kind of books. Unfortunately, this book did not deliver.
There was no plot development, no coherence, no chemistry between the main characters. I could go on and on about it but meh.
I kept seeing the ad to read these so I gave it a try. Dnf at book 4. The characters are unlikeable. The characters go from hating each other to saying they love each other so fast it gave me whiplash. The spice is just cringy. Half the book is inner dialogue. Nothing enjoyable for me.
This is my first book by this author. It allowed me to meet a reading challenge of reading a vampire book and also reading a new-to-me author. Book one of the Royal Vampire trilogy ends in a cliffhanger. It is written in first person from Veronica's POV.
Veronica is almost twenty when she travels to Shadow Terrace in search of her sister and finds much more than she ever thought to seek. She quickly learns there is a whole world of creatures she thought were myths living in a section of Tennessee. She meets Alex, who ends up saving her time and again, before she realizes he is a vampire. Alex seems like a good guy, if a little hot-headed. I love his protective instincts toward Veronica. Turns out she is his fated mate, despite her humanity.
The world building is quite intricate. I appreciate the thought that went into how the pieces of this world fit together. This series is a spin off of other series written by the author. I am assuming that many of the secondary characters in this book are from those other series. Readers who have read those previously may gain extra enjoyment from seeing those characters again. There is an underlying plot of vampire rebellion and political chaos in the Shadow realm. There are a few steamy scenes and lots of arguing between Veronica and Alex. (No one seems to communicate very well.) There is also a plot point of a shadow that has haunted Veronica most of her life that I am sure will play into the story more in later books.
There were parts of this book that I really enjoyed. Both characters were hard for me to like very much. I don't typically read books where the heroine is this young, so her immaturity may be part of why I couldn't connect with her. This is one of those books that is enjoyable while you are reading and hard to pick up again when you stop. I ended up reading into the second book far enough to get past the cliffhanger ending. Then I decided that I really didn't want to read any more. This is a good series for people who don't mind reading multiple books to get to the HEA and answers to the mysteries. The world-building is quite good, but this story just didn't engage me enough to finish at this time.
This is the second series of books in the Shadow City series of trilogies. The main couple in this trilogy are a human female (Veronica or “Ronnie” as her friends call her) and a vampire male (Alex, Prince of the vampires). Shadow Terrace and Shadow Ridge are two towns that make-up the Shadow City “metropolis” that houses supernaturals of all kinds. Ronnie came to Shadow Terrace because her sister, Annie, has gone missing. Supernaturals are not known to humans in this universe of characters, and there really aren’t any humans in Shadow City. Which is why a human searching for her sister stands out like a sore thumb. There’s political intrigue afoot, and Ronnie and Annie get caught up in the middle of it. Enter Alex, who helps Ronnie, because she is his mate.
World building is excellent. Especially since I read the Silver wolves trilogy first. So I was well acquainted with the two towns, the politics of the ruling council, and even the MMC. However, if a reader didn’t complete that trilogy first, there really wasn’t enough in this first book to be well acquainted with the background or reasons for why the MMC exhibited some of his actions. Character development isn’t as complete. But you get enough to figure it out. The plot is interesting, I just didn’t think it was executed as well as it could have been. The speed at which these two characters are saying “I love you,” would make even Einstein scratch his head. . . Even accounting for the pull of the mate bond between them.
Evenso, I did enjoy the book, and would recommend it for readers that like a more “mild” Romance novel. However, I would recommend that one read the trilogies in order. I believe there are 4 of them.
Book: Cursed Mate Read By: Ebook and Audio Author: Jen L. Grey Narrator: Amy Landon Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal Romance Main Characters: Alex and Recommend: Yes Spice: 🌶️️ 🌶️️ Age recommendation: 16-30+ Years My feelings:
First off…. I wish there was more spice then there was… that’s it. That’s all I wish for. The rest of the book was great!
“If I hurt you …” he started, conflicting emotions heavy in his tone. “I’ll smack you,” I promised.
I was drawn in from the second I started it, and was captivated the whole way though.
“Ah, you’re no fun.” He winked at me. “But I have plenty of time to change your mind.” “I take it back.” Sierra dry-heaved. “They’re so much worse than Sterlyn and Griffin.”
I wouldn’t say it was young adult, but its more younger audience them my 40 year old self lol.
“First off, he’d be pissed if he heard you say boyfriend,” Sierra said and pointed at Griffin. “Am I right?” “Don’t drag me into this.” Griffin buried his face into Sterlyn’s hair. “I’m just over here, minding my own business like you should be.”
I am so interested to find out what this shadow that follows her around is all about. She is clearly not all human, there must be something else in her…. Maybe angel like her friend? Keen to start book 2!

When is Books started it kind of reminded me of Peter Pan because of Veronica being afraid of a shadow. I thought that was kind of odd but she was also a child at the time and thought she saw something in her room. Now Veronica is going to see if she can’t find her sister who ran off with her boyfriend. She supposed to be at this university Veronica gets there she finds out that there are actually vampires and werewolves in the world. I felt like I missed something in this book because it seem like Veronica was only there for a day and then all of a sudden she’s there for over a week, the people that she staying with act like they’ve known her for years, and she’s so hot for this one vampire that they end up together. She practically threw her self at him. It was like reading a teenage romance. And I didn’t like the way it ended though because it was definitely a cliffhanger. I’m going to read the next book in this series just because I want to find out what type of person Veronica is. I don’t believe she is human by the way this book ended.
Veronica/Ronnie is worried about her sister went to see her boyfriend in Shadow Terrace but when she’s arrived Ronnie barely escapes an attack but she’s rescued by sexy, mystery man, Alex. Ronnie pretends to accept Alex’ smooth advice to leave town but she doesn’t and Alex swoops in again for a rescue and takes her to Sterlyn and Griffin for safety.
The next morning, Sterlyn takes Ronnie to help find her sister but Alex is annoyed by it and takes the duty. Ronnie follows and finds her sister happily in the arms of a vampire and a look around makes Ronnie aware she’s the only human around. Alex has to take drastic measures to leave with Ronnie safely but has to tell her the world she thought was fantasy is real.
That said, the reader has to accept go along with an outing with a promising start and intriguing hook has the bumbling, sole human in neighboring supernatural territories being able to overrule them, demands for answers and dictate their actions all while being a pawn, making for a questionable read. Rating: 3.5stars
I am loving this Shadow City world! And I was super excited to switch over to the vampires in this latest series. We've seen glimpses of Alex in the Silver Wolves series, but now it's his turn to find his soulmate. Meet Veronica aka Ronnie. A kick ass heroine in her own right. She may be human but that doesn't mean she isn't just as tough as the shifters she befriends. Ronnie has no idea that her world is about to change when she heads to Shadow Terrace to retrieve her sister who ran off to be with her boyfriend. Ronnie knows something is wrong and is going to do whatever it takes to bring her sister home. As she searches she finds herself in a bit of trouble but lucky for her Alex is there to save her. Not just once but twice. And then she learns the truth. Vampires are real. And so are a lot of other supernaturals. And her sister is caught with one nasty vampire. She'll do whatever she can to free him. What she doesn't expect is this tug she feels toward Alex. It's nothing like she has ever felt before. And for someone who keeps her walls up and tight, she is astonished at how easily it is for him to knock them down. Loved this story! Ronnie was such a wonderful character and you can't help but adore Alex. And if you loved the gang from the Silver Wolves trilogy, you will be extra happy to see them make their appearance! I need the next book ASAP especially after that insane cliffhanger! Can't wait to see what happens next!
Veronica (Ronnie) is on a mission to track down her sister and bring her back from the mysterious town where she disappeared with her new boyfriend. Tracking down her sister, Annie comes with a lot of complications unbeknownst to Ronnie at the time. The book, is a rather fast pace read, which I thoroughly enjoyed. We see more of Alex—the vampire who likes to have people owe him favors. Oh Lordy, that boy won’t know what happened to him and Ronnie is bent on keeping him on his toes. I enjoyed seeing Sterlyn and the gang and seeing how they coexist with the vampires. The vampires have some major problems happening in Shadow City. There are some rogue vampires that unfortunately have made matters worse. The dramatic ending almost had me throwing my phone at the wall. The author certainly knows how to end a book without us realizing it has concluded. It is so good!! I cannot wait to see what happens next.
If you don’t want like spoilers this is your warning to stop reading.
Normally, I like books like this; that are always on kindle unlimited and I know the ending. But book one, she arrived in this town, met this vampire, and like a week or two later they’ve decided to be together because they’re mates. Which okay… but like I prefer a bit more of a burn. Like it happened so fast and without any thought to it. They didn’t have to overcome anything and like they’re banging while her sisters brain is melted.
Idk just not my cup of tea. I just wanted more tension from them and maybe even “oh no we can’t be together” kinda thing. It would have really made the story. But instead they mated and bam. I lost interest in the rest of the story. Like who really cares about the sister who really hasn’t even been introduced into the story?
Anyways, it’s an easy read though. But after they get together I was bored.

I didn’t like Alex in the beginning of this book because Veronica, Ronnie to her friends has come the the Shadow Cities to find her sister who went chasing after her foster sister Annie who was chasing after a man at the university. Said man was a vampire, who turned her sister into a blood bag despite beginning quite illegal the way he was getting her to cooperate. Both sisters were raised by an older woman who has taught them right and wrong but she has an eversion to her daughter being anywhere near the shadow area. Alex and Ronnie have a mutual attraction that sparks causing Alex to get “in trouble” with his brother the vampire King because he will do whatever he has to protect Ronnie. When he tries to get her to go home it doesn’t work then the counsel gets its panties in a twist because Sterlyn takes her in with the silver wolves and Killian’s pack. I am intrigued and will continue reading the series in order.
Super fun paranormal with great world building and strong found family vibes. Each sub-series has its own story arc, but there is bigger political drama unfolding throughout the series. Overall, you’ll like this series if you like good vs. evil plots, political drama, fated mates, alliance building.
The only negative is that I feel like each subseries should have been one book. I find that each individual book ends in an odd place, but each series has a good conclusion.
Although each sub-series can be read as a standalone, it’s much more enjoyable to binge in order:
Jen L Grey has established an amazing world called Shadow City. She manages to pull the reader in to see just what will happen next. In Cursed Mate (Shadow City: Royal Vampire) we meet Veronica (Ronnie to her friends/family) who is loyal to who she calls family, independent and determined even when she feels insecure. Mind over matter so to speak. When she is faced with a life-or-death situation, it is Alex who comes to her rescue. To keep Ronnie safe, Alex calls in a favor he is owed. With the help of the silver wolves and their friends, can Ronnie find her sister? Read to find out how Ronnie handles the lies she has been told, the chemistry between her and Alex and finding a family she finally feels herself with all while fighting the evil that has her sister.
Expect action, betrayal, friendship, loyalty, chemistry and most of all love both as a family and from a mate.
Shadow City nothing is what it seems and when you look you might find what your looking for or something that is unexpected. Veronica on her way to find her sister when she gets to Shadow Terrace she finds things are not what they seem. She gets attacked and from the moment she hears hears a voice her world shifts. Alex steps in when it is called for but, in order to keep her safe he tries to fight what he feels. After he takes her to the wolves things start to heat up. When she learns the truth about what Alex truly is will she stay or will she flee? Will Alex want her to stay or will he send her home? This book took me on an emotional, action packed, twist and turn read that kept me glued to my seat turning page after page to see what happened. These two will give you everything and more. I did not expect anything and was completely blown away and I so can't wait to read the next.
3.5 ⭐️ This was a good first book in the trilogy. Veronica, a human searching for her missing sister, stumbles upon a world filled with supernatural beings. Her encounter with the vampire Prince, Alex, unveils a shocking revelation—they are fated mates, which adds an extra layer of complexity to their relationship, especially in the vampire world. As the story unfolds, Veronica finds herself facing dangerous situations, including a kidnapping orchestrated by a vampire sect. The suspense has you wondering if she'll make it out alive. Veronica also has secrets of her own, which adds an element of mystery and anticipation as we wait to see when and how they'll be revealed. The chemistry between Veronica and Alex was good, however, I wouldn't describe these books as spicy. Again, I was really let down that there was no dual POV, as I'd have loved to read about Alex's thoughts and feelings.
