Vampish #1

Vampish: The Hunt

Rate this book
Move over Buffy, there’s a new slayer in town…

And I’m going to hunt down every bloodsucker until I find the bastard that murdered my parents.

After spending three years as a recruit training to kill wayward vampires, it’s finally graduation day. Now I’ll be leading an elite team, assembled by the Royal vampire queen herself.

Everything is going according to plan until I meet him. He might be charming, witty, and sexy, but he’s everything I hate—a vampire.

My enemy.

Our connection is undeniable, but I refuse to submit.

My whole life I’d been trained to hate fangers but teaming up with him might be the only way to get my revenge and save the humans from the rebel vampires after the queen’s throne.

And more than that, he might be the key to bringing back something I thought I’d lost forever.

*** This is an upper YA/NA crossover with schmexy, sinful vampires and is best suited for ages 17+. Be warned this is a slow burn enemies-to-lovers romance, and the steaminess factor does increase through the course of the series! ♥

*** Vampish is set within the world of Azar, along with (in reading order) Hitched, Darkblood Academy, Royally Hitched, Darkblood Prison, and Wolfish but it's not necessary to read the other series first to enjoy this one.

G.K. De Rosa has been an avid reader from a very young age. In fact, before she could even read, she tried fooling everyone into thinking that she could. At the precocious age of two, while living in Italy, she had memorized an entire children’s book in Italian and expertly turned the pages at the exact right moments of the story. As she grew up, she always enjoyed literature, no doubt having been instilled with a love of story telling from her early years in Catholic school where she was greatly influenced by exemplary teachers who taught her the value of English and Literature. Though she did not pursue writing in college and instead went for the more traditional route of International Business inspired by her love for travel and all things foreign, after a move to New York City, she found her creative writing side calling once again. She began writing a restaurant review blog, City Lights and Tasty Bites, detailing her other passion – food! The hectic hustle and bustle of the city, combined with long commuting times gave her the opportunity to spend more time reading and rekindled a lost love. After reading countless books in many diverse genres over the two years in New York City, and returning to her home state of Florida, she felt compelled to write something for herself. She had always felt particularly drawn to Young Adult novels and having been an eternal romantic at heart, a fantasy romance was a natural choice. She currently lives in South Florida with her real life Prince Charming and their fur baby, Nico the German Shepherd.

DeRosa creates another utterly swoony, fun-filled adventure that'll keep you glued to your Kindle long into the night. Handsome Ransom was sweet and charming and well, handsome. I absolutely loved him! Can't wait for the next episode of Vampish.

If you love a good vampire hunter book, this is one you should definitely pick up. The action was non stop and the slow burn romance knocked me for a loop. I loved the MC, Phoenix. Her young life is filled with tragedy and all she can think about is revenge. She sets off to become a Sicari who is a vampire hunter. While in the academy, she runs into Ransom, a rogue vampire. Will he be her downfall or will she be able to destroy all of the vampires to get revenge.

Truly a joy to read and I devoured this book. I am a vampire book connoisseur and this one hit all the marks. Go and check out this series. The story will not disappoint. I give this book 5 stars.

This is clearly not written to tell a compelling story but to sell as many copies with as little effort as possible by invoking all the tropes under the sun.

Sex and violence is how you hold an audience.
The book literally opens with a hot and heavy makeout session immediately followed by the decapitation of a vampire.

Stupid vampire that dies stupidly but has just enough time to deliver a few ominous lines of dialogue.

Orphaned MC that is chosen by the gods.

Shallow, one-dimensional characters that are defined solely by their (superhero?) names like "Hunter", "Archer", and "Spark". Did I mention the MC is called Phoenix? At least she is not a literal phoenix but a wolf-shifter that (surprise!) can not shift. No, never read that one before. /s

Training to kill vampires as part of academy education with the goal of joining an elite vampire slayer military division and the MC is of course uber gifted. (chosen one/secret royal line?)

Very inconsistent and exaggerated emotional states that rapid-fire switch between opposites to squeeze maximum drama from each sentence.

The melodrama goes through the roof in general and frequently defies any and all reason.

Just replacing parts of common curses with "vamp" or "fang" doesn't make them any more fitting for a fantasy world or for younger readers. Here are a few of them so you can get a taste for the cringe-worthiness of those curses "motherfanger", "hades" instead of "fuck" or "hell", and many more I can't be bothered to look up anymore.

Establishing shot to inform us who the bad guys are by showing a traumatic childhood memory flashback.

The author has no clue how to write convincing children or doesn't care to. The only differences to normal character voices are a little less complex sentences and "mommy" and "daddy" sprinkled in for good measure. But to be fair I rarely see well-written children in UF.

Now that sex, blood, and ominous warnings are out of the way and we are past the obligatory traumatic childhood flashback. What is next? The romance of course.

Of course, we have mixed signals to the casual hookup that actually wants more.
The current plaything will probably be dropped and jilted unceremoniously and will turn out to secretly be a huge asshole.

I've actually made it almost halfway through the book before it just got too much.

There is no logic, no common sense. The entire plot is so contrived and hinges upon so much utter stupidity of so many different characters I don't think I could've come up with this even if I tried.

This is just bad.

As always G.K has hit it out the park with a hard to put down book. Random from wolfish is back and a vampire to boot. Nix is a Royal Sicari aka vampire hunter. The trouble ...connection these two have... Read the book to find out. I can't wait for book two.

Left Open

Reading the rest of the series is nesscessary. Does not have an enclosed, solved story and is left in a cliffhanger. For this reason only, I have knocked the rating down quite a bit. I can understand taking several books to defeat a main villain, but I do not like series that require multiple books to solve even a simple plot line. In this, nothing is resolved, only more questions formed. This style tries too hard to mimic tv shows and I wish authors would avoid writing stories in the format just to sell a series.

I would categorize Vampish as a young adult with a non-steamy haters to lovers romance tease plot.

Mainly about Phoenix, a 19 year old who despises vampires ever since one killed her parents. The first half of the book is getting to know her, and her backstory. Along with set up for the vampire hunting organization that Phoenix works for. The second half is about her being put on assignment with a vampire undercover in a rivals territory. Ewww if in Phoenix's point of view.

It is honestly reminiscent of the TV series "Alias" with a mix of "Vampire Diaries."

Phoenix is a lot like Jennifer Garner's character of Sydney within Alias. Acclaimed to be brilliant and top of the class, but mostly immature so the plot line is pushed. I find that I do not like these types of female characters. They tend not to be honest, which I find irritating. A woman can be smart and strong and not have to hide it.

Her love interest is basically Damon Salvatore of Vampire Diaries. Who is basically Angel of Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- the "bad boy" who actually has the most heart. Overdone.

I did like the way the author wrote. Was easy to follow, gave insight, made sense. I don't know if it is only because of the familiar character tropes or what, but the characters being predictable made the story predictable and not very exciting for me to read. That was a shame, because the concept - mixed supernaturals forming teams to keep peace among kingdoms - should have been interesting.

All and all, I wouldn't say don't read. Characters and story arc can be interesting if not biased. Definitely if you do, all books should be read together, and expect simple plots.

(You should start Hitched Live and read Wolfish before this book at least. It will make it much more enjoyable with all of the character reappearances.)
Now onto the review:
When I started this book I literally got upset when I had to put it to go back to work. Its really enticing and will make you want to read it in one sitting. It gets to the point with its pace as well which can be hard for fantasy novels. The imagery makes it so you can actually imagine yourself there, all of the characters, and just get enveloped into the world of Azar. Now for our two main characters.

Meet Phoenix (Nix): Kicking fanger butt with her five best friends. Snarky. Confident. OCD should be her middle name. Oh, and this heroine's got some BITE. All she wants to do is make fangers pay for killing innocents. Namely her parents. Blinded by revenge; she doesnt notice the hole she has fallen down until she ends up falling in another way.
NOTE TRIGGER WARNING WITH FAMILIAL DEATH A LOT IN THIS BOOK
(Potential spoilers start here)
Meet Ransom: Honestly, he reminds me of Hunter and Ryder (Main males from Wolfish and Darkblood Academy respectively), but a vampire. Not allowing himself happiness because he believes he doesnt deserve it and his female is out of his reach. His confident playboy attitude makes him really funny, but you know he can be a real thorn in the side of everyone still.
If you're a fan of love triangles, this book has one as well between Rhydian, Nix, and Ransom. 🥰🐺🦇🐉
(*END OF POTENTIAL SPOILERS*)
Anywho, must read if you enjoy Vampire hot guys, love confusion, and a girl coming to grips with life, love, and abilities a decent amount of us probably won't see coming til they are revealed in Chapter Two or Three. The next book cannot come fast enough!! GK has done it again!!

again with the slapping hands on hip

Ahh, GK Rosa - you can’t pull yourself away from the slapping of the hips, can you? 😂

So far I am liking this better than Wolfish, I felt that one dragged. There was a question that popped in my head (like how she’s hiding the sicari tattoos).

Still love Ransom, Nix is wavering with me so I’ll keep on reading!

GK DeRosa has done it again a page turner that keeps you going. Her easy writing style keeps you captivated and draws you in. The characters are well developed and are giving the story the depth, it needs. If you are a fan of Enemy to Lover stories you have found the book for you. You don’t mind a little schmexy romance she got you covered. So if you are like me and once you have found an author you love and need to read everything she/he writes give GK DeRosa a try and I promise you she won’t disappoint.

This is book one in what will be another fantastic series by the talented GK DeRosa. We are once more in the world of Azar which you have come accustomed to if you have read some of the other works of DeRosa. If you are new to the world of Azar no worries this is a standalone series that will make perfect sense but get you hooked into needing more.

Phoenix lives for one thing and that is the revenge on the vampire that lead the attack killing her parents and many other innocent shifters when she was a young girl. 10 years later and 3 of them spent in extensive training she is now officially a Royal Sicari – a vampire hunter ordered by the Vampire Queen to take care of all the rebel vampires.

Taking her orders from a fanged one isn’t easy for Phoenix. Her hatred for them is fierce but she understands that she needs to work with the Royals to be able to get the rebels that are trying to overthrow every established rule. As the leader of her team made up of other supernatural’s they are going deep into the darkness to kill as many fanged ones as they can. But the true challenge comes when she is ordered to leave her team and instead team up with one specific fanged one instead.

He is charming, witty, and sexy but he is the enemy. Babysitting is not what Phoenix signed up for when she went through 3 years of training to be a vampire hunter. The Queen insist that she is the only one who can do the job. Will she be able to fulfill her duty working with a fanger and not submit this weird chemistry that is flying between them? Phoenix understands that it is important to infiltrate the rebel vampires and he might be the ticket to find her parents killer. But nobody said it would be easy.

Holy schnikes!! G.K. DeRosa has done it again! She snagged me with the first line and threw me back into the fantasy world of Azar where enemies become lovers, the past hides a mystery... and it’s all wrapped up in delicious drama, mayhem and plenty of steamy exchanges. If you enjoyed reading Darkblood Academy, Darkblood Prison or Wolfish... this is a MUST! Vampish: The Hunt follows right after Wolfish: Fateborne, and I highly recommend grabbing that series first - then come back and devour this book. Keep reading for more, but beware of SPOILERS!!!

This story follows Phoenix (Nix) - a wolfy vampire hunter with a tortured past, hell-bent on revenge. I enjoyed her strong sass mixed with a sweet vulnerability when paired with our favorite Royal wolf from Wolfish... that’s right, RANSOM IS BACK!!!!! The roguish, dark and handsome alpha heir is back, but as a vampire! And with a new nickname for our girl! I was so excited to hear his cheeky snarky self again! The spicy tension between Nix and Ransom kept me smiling through most of the book. The author has created a wonderful chemistry between the two that will have you rooting for them as they lie about their feelings for each other and slay vamps along the way. Plus, you gotta love a girl who names her favorite weapon.

And if you felt like you had not had enough of Nocturnis, the realm set aside for vampires, then this is your chance to get your fill! G.K. DeRosa paints a vivid landscape full of old world gothic castles, swanky modern high rises, decrepit warehouses and forbidden clubs... she does a superb job of making the world come to life as you are drawn into this intriguing land where it’s perpetually night and shadows lurk around every corner.

Finally, we cannot forget that in every G.K. DeRosa book there has to be some love triangle drama. Enter... Spark Skyraider - Ohhhhh, yeah, Hitched fans! This handsome son of the dragon alpha is hot on our girl and I cannot wait to see if the dragon becomes possessive as Nix and Ransom workout whatever they keep denying.

Needless to say, I highly recommend this book and cannot wait for the next one! Happy reading!!!

I’ve had some GK DeRosa books on my TBR list for a while and let me tell you how much I regret not reading her books sooner! I’m so glad I won an ARC for Vampish! This was an amazing book to start off my newest author obsession with. It’s an “Abso-fangin-lutely” must-read!🥰
Vampish is full of everything I love! It’s an enemies to lovers, paranormal romance! It is intertwined with some of her other books but can be read as a standalone series, which is good because I haven’t read the other books that revolve around the world of AZAR..BUT I will be rectifying that ASAP. I had no confusion, and the whole storyline is well developed and the romantic tension is on point as well as the witty banter and humor 🥰 I can’t wait for you all to read Ransom and Phoenix’s story! And I cannot wait for book 2!
Before you read Vampish the Hunt Book 1 tho make sure to download and read Vampish Day One: A Prequel to get a little backstory on Phoenix and her group ❤️

A few of my favorite quotes/words with no spoilers that made me lol...

“You know, even when you’re threatening to murder me, it’s kind of hot.”

“You know, for a bloodwhore, you sure are bossy.” She spun back and seared me with a glacial glare. “Suck me sideways.”

“Abso-fangin-lutely.”

Fans of GK know what they have in store in this newest series from the masterful story teller! They can’t wait to sink their teeth into this pulse-pounding, adrenaline, page turning masterpiece but for those who may not of read any books by GK well this is the perfect time to start a series as this is book one! However, you will be hooked like the rest of her addicts and I guarantee you will also be chomping at the bit until book two comes out like the rest of us to find out how Nix gets out of this tight spot she’s in as book one comes to a close- much too quickly for us all to have liked!

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all who love paranormals and love to hate to love again?? romances! Those of you who have read the Wolfish series just before this one will find an appearance by a supporting character in that series who is now a main player whose loyalty is in question as book one ends!

Nix at a young age watched her parents die by vampires and she has dedicated her life to killing the vampire who killed her parents and any others she happens to meet. She went away for special training to learn how to kill vampires but she harbors a secret she hasn’t told anyone except her adopted father after that attack that night. She now is a trained assassin working for the vampire queen herself to rid the world of these renegade fangers! She learns about the vampire who killed her parents and is determined to kill him no matter how powerful he has become!

This series will burn the midnight oil so just be prepared as you settle down to enjoy this book! There is no real good place to take a break and frankly you won’t want to when you start it! It took me two days because of so many interruptions!

While you’re waiting for book two to come out why not pick up the series Wolfish which preceded this series and read about the wolf vampire who plays such a major role in this new series! Let’s see if Ransom redeems himself in book two in his eyes and Nix’s as well as others for that matter!

I devoured this whole book in a single sitting! It’s a wild ride y’all, so buckle up! Page after page of amazing plot, kick butt characters, and a fantasy world that I love! You can absolutely read this as a stand alone, but if you are new to GK DeRosa I would recommend reading her Wolfish series first to add another layer of amazing to this incredible story. You really should just read all of her books because she has amazing TALENT! Her stories always have me coming back for more. I absolutely love the character development, take no prisoners women, hot alpha men, and the story cross over/world building from different series.

Once again this author has grabbed me and dragged me into this amazing world she created and I did not want to leave! In this latest read we meet Pheonix (Nix) who is out for revenge against vampires for the death of her parents but what she wants to happen doesn’t go to plan! It’s gritty and action packed , it’s exciting and has chemistry that is off the charts! Nix is strong and a total bad ass, Ransom is tall dark and handsome and a vampire which makes this story all the more entertaining! I loved it!

I probably say this about every new series from this author, but I think this really is my favorite one so far. It’s been a while since I’ve read a good vamp one, and this book is amazing! I love all the action, and the vampire world is awesome (dark, mysterious, and a little twisted). Also, Ransom has definitely become my number one book boyfriend (yes, even beating out Ryder), and the banter between him and Nix is so entertaining. I’m a huge fan of enemies to lovers, so putting a hunter and a vampire together will always cause a lot of drama (and shmexy tension). I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2. I’m already dying to know more about Nix and Ransom.

This book was absolutely phenomenal. While you don't need to have read the previous books from this world, it will give you a better knowledge of the races and abilities.
G.K. DeRosa has given us another batch of well-crafted characters. I loved reading their dialogues and inner monologues.
What I liked best was that the book was fresh. It was actioned packed and fast-paced from beginning to end. There wasn't a point where I was bored. I also liked how the story wasn't predictable. I didn't have that I know where this is going feeling. It was exciting from the beginning to...well...the end of book 1.

This is such a promising start to a new series. The world building is incredible. This is another series set in Azar, and they all interlock at some point although you do not need to have read them in order to enjoy this one. Nix is a shifter who has only shifted once and has sworn to avenge the murder of her parents commited by vampires. Once she graduates as a Sicari sworn in by the vampire queen in Nocturnis, the problems arise. I was so happy to see Ransom get his own story, especially now that things have turned pear shaped for him, making his character and situation even more complex. The interaction between the characters is magnificent and I am on tenterhooks waiting to see where this is going.

Phoenix has trained the last three years to work for the Queen of the Vampires as one of her elite Vampire hunters to coral the ones who chose not to live by the laws that govern them. She has her own very personal reasons for wanting to do this. She encounters Ransom on a training mission and the sparks fly between the two. It's good to see Ransom again as he played a big role in the author's last series. Love his snark, love Nix's sass and together they are dynamite. This enemies to lovers series is very intense and extremely interesting. Loved every minute of the first book. I volunteered to read this book.

Oh my goodness, sooooo good!!! So, I’ve loved Ransom since Wolfish and was so happy to see him have his own story. This book did not disappoint. I almost read it all in one sitting because it had me sucked in from the beginning but I fell asleep reading it since I was up till 2 am cause I just could not put it down. Holy cliffhanger it’s a doozy. Cannot wait to see where this is going to go. ❤️ Ransom so much!

This book continues the story of Ransom who we met in Wolfish. He is now a vampire and struggling with his new situation. He meets Nix, a sicari, or vampire hunter and the sparks fly from their initial meeting.
The book ends on a cliffhanger so I can’t wait to read the next one!

Compulsive read, oh to hurry next page! The author has out done herself in this book. I couldn't put it down. Phoenix was a vampire hunter and belonged to the Royal sicari hunters and was also in charge a group of hunters that was paranormals. Her parents were killed by vampires and Phoenix and her sister survived. Phoenix then dedicated her life for pay back. In one of the hunts Phoenix meant the vampire Ransom, that used to be a wolf but now just was a vampire as the wolf did now come out. Phoenix was also a wolf but the wolf didn't come out but she had a special ability. Things happen that Phoenix and Random had to work together, oh my.

So this is my first review of 2022! So fitting because I freaking loved this book so much. Let me start off by saying Ramson is so swoon worthy! He is charming, hilarious and cocky...but also not a total jerk. After Ramon's horrible luck we get to see some of the old playful Ramson resurface. Think Damon Salvatore meets Rhysand!

Nix is already my favorite G.K. Derosa main character/ Heroine. Nix is smart, bad ass and has a thing for naming her weapons! Nix is also humble in her mission to stop the evil vamps but she isn't perfect because this did start off with her need for revenge. (Yes, I think characters with flaws are better than boring characters.) I can already see character growth as she starts to realize all Vamps aren't evil. Nix does seem to have slight PTSD from her childhood but she really is so strong. I could seriously go on.

I also LOVE that Derosa is incorporating more duel POV. (Can more authors please do this?)

This first book definitely gives me the Enemies-to-Lovers vibe. It starts off with some fun cat-and-mouse action between the two MC's, but also their fiery banter and chemistry is perfect! **Chef's Kiss**

I honestly enjoyed everything about this book and can't wait for more.

Let's just say that the vampire aspect is what kept me entertained. For the most part, it was written well, with decent world building. But Phoenix is annoying. Plain and simple. After reading the 2nd book tho, this was better by far.

I really like Ransom, but he's that brooding guy that you hate to love, but love anyway, with annoying self-sacrificing and woe-is-me attitude.

Apparently, this book is apart of the Azar world of the author's, and you don't need to read the other series set in this world to understand this one, but I feel like it would've given me some more context. Do with that as you will, but I will say that after reading the summaries of the other stories, it's pretty much repetitive in the terms of romance with push and pull, mating bonds, hot and cold characters, etc..

Also, there's a bit of plagiarism going on here: The Vampire Diaries made a huge impact on DeRosa's vampires --> vervain and sunlight as weaknesses, with the possibility of a witch-made ring so the vampires can walk in sunlight, exchanging blood and if there's enough in the human body and they die, they come back as a vampire, and they have 24hours to get blood or they die after coming back to life. So.. I took it in stride.

Happy reading, Goodreads fiends.

This author has got to be one of my favorites. I have read all of her books and thoroughly enjoyed each of them. I love that a lot of her stories intertwine and characters from other books will make appearances. At the same time you don’t necessarily have to read the other books to understand things. She does such a great job of explaining things. This book was no different. I love the characters in this story Ransom’s quips. (First fell in love with this character in Wolfish). Nix’s sass and strength. The interactions between the two of them are both entertaining and endearing. The story was exciting and interesting leading up to the cliffhanger ending that leaves you desperate for the next installment. All in all another amazing book by G.K. DeRosa. Highly recommended!

My first time ever reviewing a book and so glad I chose a GK DeRosa book. She is my go to now for great books.
I have read all GK DeRosa Books and once you’ve read one book you’ll be a fan for life! Vampish is no different, GK drags you into a world and makes you have love/hate relationship with these characters. She is the kind of author whose books are written so well that her words come to life in your mind.
I did not put this book down and I cannot wait for book 2! So if you love a great paranormal romance than I highly recommend Ransom and Phoenix’s story!!
