Time & Shadows Mystery #2

Convergence Point

Rate this book
An assistant who reminds her of a Viking crossed with an over-enthusiastic puppy, and cases to work without a boss micro-managing — or plotting to murder — her: Everything Agent Sam Rose ever wanted.

But a strange explosion at Drenmann Labs disrupts her equilibrium. The senior agent in the neighbouring district — who technically outranks her — dismisses it as an accident. Sam suspects something more. Especially since only Henry Troom, former protégé of Dr Abdul Emir, died in the blast.

Sam packed away the trauma of dealing with Dr Emir’s parallel-reality machine with the final compulsory psychological debriefing last May. But this case forces her not only to reconfront her worst fears… Sam finds herself embroiled in a battle for the very fabric of reality, pursued by someone who wants to make sure secrets stay hidden.

Sam’s dark future is here.

Perfect for fans of Blade Runner and J.D. Robb’s In Death series, don’t miss Convergence Point, the gripping sequel to The Day Before.

I really like this series. The second book moved right along, and I enjoyed the development of the storyline. I don't want to leave spoilers. Just...read this series.

Inside this second novel of the Time & Shadows Mystery, Liana Brooks main character, Sam Rose is still my ultimate favorite. Sam Rose is a strong female character who rises to the challenges presented in every book. It's quite amazing to watch her grow as a character and try to overcome the obstacles laid out before her. Convergence Point is another stunning masterpiece. Mystery galore, murder, and intrigue everywhere. Fans of Gone Girl and Agatha Christie will enjoy reading this tale.

Sam Rose has once again pulled herself up out of the dark. Yet once more, she meets danger in the face. However, this time, there are three mysterious deaths to deal with including a clone of herself. Sam Rose will find that she needs help solving the cases. So, she pairs up with MacKenzie aka Mac. This duo is super cool to watch at they progress through the cases and work together. Mac is definitely a great partner for the famous Sam Rose. Liana Brooks definitely knows how to combine the right elements in creating a novel worthy of every reader's attention. The plot is fast-paced. Suspense, addictive, and will keep readers guessing. I can't wait to read the next brilliant book in this new series. Overall, I highly recommend Convergence Point to all.

Just don't.

I started this and stopped after 5% on my Kindle. After four months, I thought perhaps I had overreacted and resumed. I hadn't but I gutted it out. So bad.

Is it possible for Convergence Point to be even better than The Day Before of the Time and Shadows series? Yes, I believe it is.

First off, we get a little more romance this time. Not center stage, but nicely worked into the story. Second the mystery-procedural investigation and as much legwork and slow reveal as the last time. The on-edge feeling continues throughout the book of who may die next. Police officers call in, warrants are retrieved - you really feel like these are officers doing their jobs. Too many books have officers breaking the law to bring criminals in - this one makes you feel that these are real officers who really believe, obey, and enforce the law.

I do dislike how men still treat women poorly - I had hoped 50 years in the future to see better of humanity. But after a plague wipes out half the population and women become breeding machines in some areas of the planet, I expect some backsliding would occur from our "enlightened times".

I should note there were a couple places where characters seemed to act out of character. Not always sure the change was because of an Iteration crossing over.

But the reason why this is amazing is the worldbuilding. As my other reviews indicate, I LOVE good worldbuilding. Ms. Brooks brings to the table several layers to the clone world - including Sam having to deal with other Iteration versions of herself dying in this one. The initial fallout from the Yellow Plague - both the crumbling of nations and the rebuilding. And, of course, time travel.

Now, if you have read my other book reviews of the sci-fi bent, you know I HATE time travel. Basically only two answers had been presented in my readings previously - (1) you can not change the past, paradox will prevent you- which gets rid of agency of the characters. Why even attempt to change things when it is an exercise of futility. (2) Multiple and infinite time lines - every time line spins off. The characters actually cannot change anything on their "real" time line - total loss of agency again - PLUS they usually get lost in the multiple time lines and never make their way back home - which is depressing and I like my stories with a happy, or at least American satisfying ending. I also don't agree with this scientifically because of the amount of energy infinite universes would require. Just doesn't make sense with a universe bounded by energy and mass.

Ms. Brooks, with the Time and Shadows, has come up with a comprise I totally agree could work. It returns agency to the time-travel stories, plus gives one of the best motivations for murder I have ever seen. What would you do, who would you kill, to keep your reality alive instead of collapsing into a dream? For creating a viable, to me at least, time-travel-multiverse thread I have to give Ms. Brooks five stars!

I haven't read the first book in this series, and I think that I might have understood some of this book more if I had. Regardless of that, this was a fascinating read for me.

This is a science fiction police procedural which will appeal to those who enjoy SF, mysteries, suspense, police procedurals.....in other words, a wide variety of readers. The action is intense from the beginning, and it never lets up. The characters are compelling and very well-developed. The plot is full of twists, and you're never quite sure where it is going to go next.

I simply could not put this book down once I started reading it. It was just THAT compelling a read.
