The Misadventures of Merdyn the Wild #1.5

The Wizard and Me: More Misadventures of Bubbles the Guinea Pig

Rate this book
In an exclusive for World Book Day, Bubbles the guinea pig shares his thoughts about wizards, magical adventures, his owner, Rose, dogs, pooing - and food. Mostly food.

This is a story about me, Bubbles. Find out how Merdyn the Wild, a wizard from the Dark Ages, landed in my life and distracted my owner, Rose, with magic and adventures.

My top five people:
1) Rose, because she feeds me
2) Merdyn, because he cast a spell so that Rose could understand me
3) Mum, because she sometimes feeds me
4) Um. Not Rose's brother, Kris, because he ignores me
5) The owner of the pet food store - mmm, food...

A companion volume to The Wizard in My Shed and The Warrior in My Wardrobe. Brilliantly illustrated by Claire Powell.

This is a little booklet specially released for World Book Day (3 March 2022) and it's telling the story of Bubbles' (Rose's guinea pig) day out. In fact, the story is also told BY Bubbles. You see, thanks to a spell, Bubbles can talk AND Rose got him a dictophone so he is recording a sort of diary. This is "a day in the life ..." sort of story. *snickers*

We get to see the world (and some past events) as seen by the snarky guinea pig and then venture out into the world to ... get food at the pet shop. He's a guinea pig, what did you expect?! ;P

As we've come to expect, the story is nicely adorned by Claire Powell's illustrations and effects throughout (though, sadly, the cover didn't have the glossy elements we know from the hardcovers).

Wonderful addition, very snarky and definitely hilarious. Though I bet an audio version would also be great (I always looove how the author brings Bubbles to life). :D

A hilarious laugh-out-loud novella for World Book Day featuring Bubbles the Guinea Pig~

I really liked The Wizard and Me’s first book and it featured the kind of character that I often don’t like. Namely a talking animal/pet. But Bubbles? Bubbles was just perfect. Not annoying (or at least not too much), very fun, very sweet. So I was excited when I learned that for World Book Day 2022 there would be a novella with Bubbles as the MC.

And in this book we follow Bubbles. We see how he got to talking, we see how he is making full use of it to get snacks at a pet store (a very hilarious idea that actually worked), we see how he gets in adventures (from snot to bullie), and how much he loves his owner Rose (even if she at times forgets to give him food, or well, to put it more nuanced, Bubbles just loves food so much and for him it is quite often feeding time). I loved that this was a diary and that Rose gave him a Dictaphone so he could record things which I found very sweet of her. I had a bit of a laugh that while it seems there are many days in here.. actually it is a short time because Bubbles keeps adding parts to his days. Here is Day 2 – after pooing. XD

I had tons of fun following Bubbles on his adventures and I found myself rooting for him when he was doing that to the bullies. OH yes!

And poor Bob, who is now utterly confused, because guinea pigs shouldn’t be talking… but he keeps hearing a voice.

I was also happy to see Merdyn and didn’t mind that we got some rehashed scenes from the first book. I mean, we get to see it from Bubbles POV, so I don’t mind.

There is a lot of talk about poops and wees. But I can forgive that. This is about a guinea pig. Believe me, I think if I let my hamsters talk they would also go on about it.

I also enjoyed the fun art by Claire Powell! I had such a big laugh at the expressions on Bubbles face at times. Oh dear~

I would highly recommend this book to all, this was just too much fun! I hope that the author writes more books about Bubbles, I can foresee some more adventures in the future!

Farnaby's offering for this year's World Book Day is a novella in his Merdyn the Wild series. This is the story up to date as told from the POV of Bubbles the talking guinea pig. Great fun and rather entertaining.

hilarious guinea pig, deserves to have been the choice of Children's Book Day!
Unfortunately only this book from the series has not been published in German language yet so I had to translate it to my niece, who loves Bubbles ☺️

World Book Day 2022 book.

Ties in nicely with The Wizard In My Shed by the same author. The story is from the point of view of Bubbles, the guinea pig, and involves a lot of weeing and pooing, which will keep youngsters giggling throughout. Kids who own guinea pigs themselves will point out all the things wrong (like keeping just one guinea pig instead of at least having a pair, having an exercise wheel and being put in a plastic exercise ball - neither of which should ever be done to a guinea pig - and climbing a tree, all of which were gleefully pointed out by my 8 year old, who delighted in knowing more about guinea pig care than the author). It's a fun little book with lots of laughs as we look at life from the viewpoint of a guinea pig who is suddenly and magically given the ability to talk. Even if he does mostly talk about wee and poo. Will appeal to younger kids who will enjoy being read to, and more confident readers who will be able to enjoy reading it themselves.

I needed something quick and quirky to read (ok, I was trying to increase my books for this years reading challenge) and I had bought this for my daughter for World Book Day. I’ve not read anything else by the author but this was easy to read, almost as if the book were reading my mind and emotions as I progressed. A fun short story which I read in a day. I’d recommend anyone read it for a little light relief from the seriousness of other books (and the world at the moment), unless of course you get queezy at the thought of a guinea-pig pooing.

This short childrens book sees a guinea pig called Bubbles have a visitor come to their house in the form of a wizard who gives him the power of speech through his thoughts being verbalised. Bubbles decides to go on a journey or two and we are able to find out all about his adventures through his diary that he recorded using a dictaphone.

This is a well written, funny and cute story that I know as a youngster I would have loved and as an adult I truly found this to be an enjoyable little read and would recommend it for the younger readers out there.

Reflections and lessons learned/the content of this book made me feel…
“We eat food, drink water, and then we wee and poo - it's called biology, GET OVER IT! Right. Enough about wees and poos…”

Some of the most important things that I can wish for my children to enjoy for their entire lives no matter what - talking animals, magical mysteries, friendship, love and toilet humour - necessary silliness!

I was thrilled to see this book offered as a World Book Day choice because my class loved The Wizard in my Shed (4.9/5 Star rating from them!) and thought Bubbles was the best character.

I enjoyed this fun little romp full of humour that my class will love. Plus I think more books should have a Guinea Pig as a protagonist!

This was the first book I had read in 5 whole years outside of my education. I have ADHD and that's how long I have been in a reading slump for and this book was so funny I actually had a giggle out loud at it. I have never been more chuffed with myself for reading a book. It was wonderful. 10/10 would read again (and I have).

A lovely little book released for World Book Day. Picked this up for my little girl cause it was about a guinea pig and we have 2 at home. My little girl loved it and wanted me to read it too and glad I did as it was very funny. 5 stars, great kids book.

What I like most is that it talks all about the wees and poos! I started and finished reading it today! It's such a short story! But after all I got it as a world book day book in school!

I liked when there was a boy and then he had a guinea pig in his hand, the guinea pig didn't like him
I liked the ending

One thing that could be better is if there was less talk about toilets
