After I Possessed the Tmall Genie of the School Adonis

Rate this book
If life were likened to god rolling the dice, then Lù YúnFēi is a 6. He’s handsome and smart, save for his abysmal proficiency in English. That is until he met Biān JìnYuán — Bian JinYuan is tall and cool, top of his grade in every exam, and his English results definitely destroy Lu YunFei’s twice over. If he’s a 6, then this guy is simply 666!

Since YunFei is already here, why would there be a need for JinYuan? It’s hard for a mountain to accommodate two tigers, unless one is a male while the other is female. Lu YunFei looked at the other party’s gender, and silently crossed that thought out.

However, not long after he started to treat Bian JinYuan as a rival, he found that after 9pm, he would mysteriously possess Bian JinYuan’s Tmall Genie.

After possessing the Tmall Genie, Lu YunFei realised that his rival is actually a pauper prince. Lu YunFei who possessed looks, height, and wealth looked at his cards which were almost overflowing with money, and decided to establish his friendship relations. Therefore, since Bian JinYuan lacked money, Lu YunFei hired him to be his English tutor.

Bian JinYuan bought a cake and couldn’t bear to eat it so that he could bring it home for his family. Lu YunFei bought him a large slice of cake the next day.

Having done good deeds everyday, Lu YunFei felt that the invisible red scarf on his chest had gotten brighter.

Until there was a hot post on the school forum: 《Exposé on Lu YunFei – getting the top student to be your lackey, do you really think that it’s all that to have money! 》

The original poster listed down various instances: bag-carrying, bringing water, peeling chestnuts; the school genius was ordered about as if he were a servant. Everyone was enjoying the gossip, when Bian JinYuan who had never posted in the forum before, posted for the first time with his real name.

Bian JinYuan: I don’t need the money, I’m willing, why do you care?

Everyone was scared dumb.

Lu YunFei worried about whether he should bother Bian JinYuan less.

“That’s not necessary, I like being bothered by you.”

“Forget it,” Lu YunFei rejected.

Bian JinYuan thought for a bit: “Then let me rephrase — that’s not necessary, I like you.”

Lu YunFei: ???!!!

Lu YunFei never expected that the mountain is wide and holds many types of tigers. Together, two male tigers can not only run fast, but also fall in love!

I was deliberating whether to give this two or three stars but eventually, I rated it three. I gave this a read because it was recommended to me by a good friend. We usually have the same taste when it comes to novels, but I guess there are also times when your tastes may differ. Still thankful for the recommendation, nevertheless!

The story was very cliché, nothing extraordinary, to the point that it seemed dull to me. However, it wasn’t to the point of dropping it altogether. I’d say it was just a bit too average. I think it would have been better if there was more plot to the story. The author focused more on the comedic aspect of the novel, but unfortunately, it wasn’t even enough of a tickle for me.

The start of the story was about how they met as classmates and later desk mates, with the sudden transmigration to the plot which was okay for me. However, their relationship developed too fast for my brain to catch up. Even though they have been ambiguous even as friends, it was still too abrupt. ML and MC suddenly fell in love and were sweet to each other just a few chapters after they decided to try being in a relationship, and that was odd to me. As if the author left out a lot of the details necessary for their development and the characters' time skipped from being bros to lovers.

The ending was a happy ending, sweet yet unmemorable. It seems to me like the author rushed to end this novel, so she could start writing her next one. The last quarter of the book was more of a summary to me. Well, at least there were still extras after the main story.

I did appreciate the part in the extra where they talked about the MC’s transmigration. Most of the time, in other transmigration novels I’ve read, the transmigration part wouldn’t be mentioned to the other party as if a secret remained between them despite the happy ending. The author did a good job including the initial stage of the story in the extras.

Despite finding the novel ‘meh’, I am looking forward to reading the author’s other novel “Reborn as the Villain President’s Cat & Dog.” My curiosity was piqued by the side character, which I found out is the main character for that particular novel. Giving this author a second chance, since I did see room for improvements in her works. I just think she lacked imagination for this novel.

A short but sweet high school story. The premise is a bit out there, and it's why I had been sitting on this novel for months after it was recommended to me before deciding to give it a try.

The MC, Lu Yunfei, is a rich second generation who attends a prestigious high school. His grades are all top notch.... except for English, where he can't even manage to pass a single exam. Hoping to bring up his English grade, his teacher switches his seat so that his deskmate is the school's study god and our ML, Bian Jinyuan. While BJY seems aloof and hard to approach, LYF gets insight into his poor home life and family circumstances when he randomly wakes up as BJY's Tmall Genie (a device similar to a Google Home or Amazon Echo). And it's not a one-time occurence either; it starts happening regularly every night at 9 pm. Because of what LYF observes in the Tmall Genie, he is able to help BJY in small ways here and there and slowly the two become closer.

Like I said, the premise is a little bit out there, but the actual interactions between the two of them are pretty sweet. First it just starts out as LYF wanting to help BJY out, a cake here and babysitting BJY's didi there, but eventually the MC realizes that the ML is a good guy despite his aloofness, and they become friends and start standing up for each other against bullies, visiting each other homes, etc. I just wish the author tried to explain the Tmall Genie possession at least a little bit, but it's suddenly thrown into the story and just as suddenly taken away without a single word on why it started happening.

The romance build up was good, and I enjoyed the confession as well. It was refreshing to read a book where one character is unsure of his feelings after being confessed to, and they start off slow with a trial relationship until they've confirmed their feelings. The ML turns quite soft for the MC after the relationship is established; it felt like he was a different person around him vs everyone else.

There's some satisfying face slapping as part of the story. Various idiots in the form of both teachers and other students try to harass or threaten the MC and ML, and it was gratifying to read about every one of them getting their just desserts, especially the English teacher. I couldn't believe that an adult would stop teaching a whole class just because she has beef with one of the students. Very unprofessional. Good riddance to her.

The bit near the end with BJY's father coming into the picture was expected but anticlimactic. I didn't really understand why his existence was kept such hush hush from BJY and even from his aunt, when clearly his mom loved his father and they only broke up because of their different expectations from the relationship. It wasn't anything embarrassing like a one night stand, so I was a bit surprised when the truth was revealed and it was way less dramatic than I thought it would be.

Ending my review with an except I thought was beautifully written (and translated!):

There were warm colours and cool colours in a drawing. Lu YunFei was undoubtedly a warm colour; bright, active, a splash of colour embodying the youthful nature of living for novelty and a thirst for experimentation. But Bian JinYuan was definitely the opposite of him in the cool colour; pensive, quiet, calculating three steps ahead of each step. He could see the vast road ahead of him, and could also see the thorns and bumps, and so he always wished to provide options for Lu YunFei. Even if those options weren't what he favoured, he still wished to prepare them for him.

As they walked alongside each other, Lu YunFei's steps were always light, while Bian JinYuan's were heavy. As they stepped into the areas lit by the sun, Lu YunFei would pull him along as they swiftly ran across, savouring the warmth of the sun. When they encountered muddy areas, Bian JinYuan would hold him back, to slow their steps, in case he got hurt.

To be honest, it’s more like 3.75 but let’s put it 4 rating. This story is a slice of life with slow pace, late romance and a bit of mystery.

A heartwarming flavor is always there as you read it, and dog-food is sufficient.

Can’t say there is something special and some people might even find it a bit boring, but I like it. It’s a good way to relieve your melancholy mood and warm your heart.

Almost no drama, only a needed amount in some places.

The relationship is not hot, but more mature and sweet.
My heart is very happy for ML, he really deserves it all.

Recommend.

I actually really enjoyed the Mc and his  relationship in this novel. There are a couple things that aren't fully explained (why did he inhabit the tmall machine?!), but overall, it was a really enjoyable story. The side characters were great as well.

If the story had ended 20 chapters early, I would have given it 5 stars. The translation was amazing - lots of really good context on cultural references.

However, I thought how the mother was portrayed as if she was perfect and could do no wrong was strange. What's wrong with her boyfriend not wanting to marry, even after 3 years of dating? If the couple loves each other, they'll talk through it. Some things need time, and marriage is that thing for many people. A forced marriage, where one person doesn't really want it, isn't great for either party. But rather than have that difficult talk, the mother decides she knows what her boyfriend will do and runs away. To get back at him for not wanting marriage? To make sure he regrets not wanting to tie the knot with her?

And the ml acts horribly - sure, he's a stoic character who doesn't care about others, but not caring about your biological family, and making them grovel to be able to see you, just because your mother ran away rather than telling the father about his own child, seems like a misdirection of anger. I found it ridiculous that the ml is portrayed as generous just because he is willing to even talk with his biological family. They did nothing wrong, they owe him nothing. Why is he acting as if he's doing them a huge favor by not holding a grudge and allowing them to speak to him? The way he acts when he is "not holding a grudge" seem like the way most people when they despise someone.

In general, I thought the ml acted like a privileged jerk. He acts as if other people catering to him is a given. People should know they can't talk to him - they're all wastes of time. If anyone wants something from him, they'd better beg and act according to his demand first. While I admire his ability to stand up for his aunt, I think someone with his mentality is quite selfish.

Honestly, the ml was full of contradictions. He didn't think he's good enough for the ml, but acts as if he's too good to bother with anyone else. He's grown up middle / lower class, without much money, but keeps wanting to treat others. He needs to pay off debts, but won't accept the standard wage for tutoring.

Lu Yunfei

Lu Yunfei

Lu Yunfei

Tmall Genie
Bian Jinyuan

Lu Yunfei

Bian Jinyuan

An enjoyable, fluffy and quick read!
Quite obviously predictable, but very well translated.
Well suited for a quick and light read.

Needed this to cool down after the damned The Poppy War trilogy. 😤

Now that I've calmed down, it's time to move onto something heavy again; something that'll leave me balked I'm sure.

Onto the next one with valour,
Aster

After binge reading danmei for a while you start to appreciate the ones that have actual realized characters with their own unique personal and relationship struggles, even though they did sorta have that typical danmei stuff i.e top of their class, handsome, whatever. The initial premise is pretty interesting but kinda gets discarded towards the middle of the story so I guess if that's what you're really looking for you'd be disappointed

i started reading this initially because ive read several works from the same author and im not disappointed! i like the relationship dynamic between MC and ML and how the MC shows unconditional positive regards towards ML and his family. i guess ML is tired of being put on pedestal by everyone and having MC around him makes him more relax and can be his real self. hence why i emotionally invested in this story ^^

The relationship? 10/10, the way they interact? 10/10, their characteristics? 10/10, the way MC and ML treat e/o? 10/10!!! This is so heartwarming. The relationship pace isn’t too slow as some would say, it’s just right. MC is a green flag; he protected and care so much about ML. Also the way he shoot his mouth xD He’s a cutie, and I get why ML cherished him so much. 4.8/5 ⭐️

it's a short, simple, sweet and a heart warming story. it's more about how MC struggling to overcome his weakness in english lesson with ML help and while helping MC, ML overcome his struggling in life with MC help and support.

Rating: 3.5/5 - It was a cute, fluffy read. The relationship is pretty much at the end of the book.

I disliked the relationship depicted between the ML and his paternal family and I think it could have been handled with a bit more compassion.

Overall - a decent story but nothing extraordinary.
