Frozen 2 Dangerous Secrets The Story of Iduna and Agnarr
By Mari Mancusi
The backstory of how Iduna and Agnarr met. How they became friends and then fell in love with each other.
Their story is not an easy one. Nor does it have a happy ending. We already know that from the Frozen stories. But they did have each other. And their love is all encompassing.
Iduna and Agnarr come from two different kingdoms and Agnarr isn’t aware of the secrets that Iduna is keeping. Together they learn the importance of fairness, peace and love. In the end, it’s their love for their daughters that motive this story.

Middle grade to teen but more importantly for fans of the Frozen stories.
Alternating chapters / point of view between Iduna and Agnarr.
Its a wonderful love adventure on its own. At least until the inevitable sadness for their ending.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I would and have purchased a copy for any avid fan of the Frozen stories.

I received an advance review copy of this book from Disney Publishing Worldwide and NetGalley in exchange for a review of the work.

I enjoyed this book a lot! There's a good amount of meat on its proverbial bones, which bolsters the tired tropes used in teen romance/drama. I loved the persevering spirit it added to the narrative of the Frozen Universe, and I appreciated how in-depth the characterizations of Agnarr and Iduna were. The story was ultimately a bit predictable, but this didn't take any of the enjoyment out of the experience. It never shied away from the grim fate of the couple, and I loved the narrative bookends that frame the story... no spoilers here! Definitely recommended for fans of Frozen or Frozen II.

One note: There are A LOT and I mean A LOT of references to songs in both movies. Enough that each time one came up I mentally made another tickmark and by the end of the book I was OVER it. But I digress. Some folks will probably even like these heavy-handed self-referential moments.

So, I've always been curious by sneak-peeks into the past or future of well-known stories.

So, when I heard about the book about Iduna and Agnarr (Elsa/Anna's parents), I was really intrigued.

Unfortunately, this one felt like a filler book. There were some new details provided but not as many as I hoped.

The story didn't take any wild or new twists, it was just filling in more details to events already well-established in the universe.

Ultimately, this one was interesting but limited.

Dangerous Secrets is the greatly anticipated prequel to Frozen II which, for the first time in forever, shines the spotlight onto King Agnarr and Queen Iduna of Arendelle.

The 2019 film undoubtedly revealed some of these secrets, such as Iduna being Northuldra and saving Agnarr as a child as well as the two of them venturing to Ahtohallan to find the answers behind Elsa’s powers. Unfortunately, thanks to the film, we also know that they never completed their journey.
Cue Mari Mancusi who expertly bring the monarchs back to life through her writing and forms these little-known characters into best friends, young lovers and torn parents, always just trying to do the next right thing.

The back stories of Agnarr and Iduna are nothing short of brilliant: the reader meets both characters in the Enchanted Forest on the fateful day of the dam celebration and we experience the wonder of both worlds colliding, along with the following danger and confusion from a first-person perspective.
I thoroughly appreciated how Mari Mancusi didn’t have to explain what had happened between the Arendellian forces and the Northuldra: Mancusi knows that the reader already knows the true turn of events from the movie. All throughout Dangerous Secrets this “inside knowledge” is used beautifully: allowing us to experience events as our protagonists do, but without diluting the tension and excitement with explanations.

The reader grows up alongside the future King and Queen, seeing their friendship blossom and experiencing their respective heartbreaks and secrets. The Northuldra are widely believed to be enemies of Arendelle due to the King’s death and the rumours surrounding it. Iduna’s hardship of hiding her true identity is matched only by her grief of losing the only family she has ever known. Similarly, Agnarr has lost a father, his best friend General Matthias and now has to learn how to be a King. Even when they find solace in their friendship and the later romance that this grows into, Iduna is not royalty: their love is doomed from the start…isn’t it?

Regular readers of my reviews will know I loved Jen Calonita’s “Let it Go” but felt that towards the end the writing emulated the movie verbatim in places. I found Kamilla Benko’s “Forest of Shadows” interesting and unique but ultimately it tried too hard to insert different elements into the Frozen universe that we know and love.
In my opinion, Dangerous Secrets contains none of these criticisms.
Elements of the movie are included, of course they are! Agnarr and Iduna’s reading tree is taken straight out of Elsa’s/Ahtohallan’s ice memories; Oaken’s trading post and sauna is briefly mentioned as a rest stop during one of the couple’s adventures and the wonder of chocolate is something Elsa and Anna definitely inherited from their parents!
The difference with this novel is that any references to the movie are easter eggs: elements that we love to spot; they are not brash and in-your-face; they are subtle and add to the story rather than creating it entirely. For example, I loved the inclusion of Grand-Pabbie and the trolls. I also suspect we may have met Kristoff’s mother – perhaps opening the door to another book from Mari Mancusi?

Of course, Dangerous Secrets can only end with the fateful voyage made by the royal couple and, true to form, this made me cry my little heart out. I know from the author’s note that Mari Mancusi is a mother herself but I feel that I would have known this anyway through the sheer heartbreak she portrays through Iduna, and later Agnarr. From their first discovery of Elsa’s powers; to Anna’s accident; to acknowledging that they were endangering Elsa by asking her to “conceal, don’t feel” right up until the couple’s realisation that they will never see their daughters again: the writing is powerful, hard-hitting and, with Ahtohallan’s last gift, stunningly beautiful.

This is a five-star glimpse into the King and Queen of Arendelle and a must-read for any fan of Frozen.

Will Mancusi reveal the secret of the ice-gatherer woman’s identity next?
Only Ahtohallan knows.

3.5 stars rounded up. This was a really cute story! Iduna and Agnarr were such a cute couple and I loved getting to read their love story! It added so much to the missing pieces of Frozen. They were just adorable and so much fun! I adored them! I did want to yell at them to get together already…haha! I did not like the misunderstanding part at all and was glad it didn’t last long. I liked seeing Elsa and Anna towards the end of the book. The ending! 😭 I knew it was coming, by still! Now, I do have to say there are mentions of spirits and magic that I didn’t care for at all. That’s obviously something I don’t believe in. I wish that wasn’t in there at all. I did skip over some of that. But thankfully, it wasn’t too weird or in your face. Overall, I enjoyed it and it brought me back to the first time I watched Frozen.

Frozen superfan here! I watched both movies before reading this and am feeling the urge to watch them again now that I have finished the book.

Frozen 2: Dangerous Secrets is the book I didn’t know I needed. It took little moments peppered throughout the movie and expanded upon them. It helped me to truly understand Elsa and Anna’s parents and their reasoning behind their actions. Not only did they have good reasoning, but they had both experienced their own versions of being asked to “conceal, don’t feel” so they didn’t request this of Elsa without understanding the gravity of their request. You get to see and feel the love these two had for each other, their children and their Kingdom. It seems like they had so very little time to enjoy the happier parts of life, but the love they experienced with each other was so big and bright.

This book is beautifully written and fits seamlessly into the Frozen World. There are ties to the movies that made me giggle and smile knowing what was to come. This book also managed to have me smiling as I flipped pages even knowing how it would end for Iduna and Agnarr.

I highly recommend this book to any Frozen fans!

This was the first Disney tie-in book I think I've ever read. I enjoyed Frozen and Frozen 2 and just thought this story of their parents might be entertaining and cute. It lived up to expectations. I enjoyed seeing the bigger story of how Iduna and Agnarr met and fell in love. The audiobook even had the actors who voiced them in the movies reading their individual chapters, so that was a nice touch.

Iduna was an engaging character. I liked getting to know her better (getting to know her beyond her... what was it... three lines in the movies? :P) and seeing what it was like for her to be separated from her people and find a new life in a new place. She was very resourceful, smart, kind, and spunky and I felt that it perfectly matched the spunky young woman we get a glimpse of in Frozen 2. I really enjoyed being in her perspective.

It was also nice to see Agnarr as a child and young man. This book make him very likable and funny and shows you the reasons behind the choices he made in the movies. Like, the whole "conceal, don't feel thing" is shown to be something that was drilled into him by his mentor when he was growing up and having to prepare to be king after his father died. It wasn't something he just made up for Elsa, it was something he'd fallen back on himself as a way to handle difficult situations as a young king. You see that he truly and deeply loved his daughters and was only trying to do what he thought he had to in order to help and protect them, though the book acknowledges that some of those decisions were flawed, and when he and Iduna left to find Ahtohalln, they did so in order to find a better way than having Elsa isolate herself from the whole world.

The romance was super sweet (and perfectly appropriate for young teen readers, thank you, Mari Mancusi!) I really enjoyed seeing their love and appreciating for each other slowly grow over their years. Friends-to-lovers romance, ftw! They were so cute. <3 Of course, that means there was a little sadness at the end because anyone who saw the movies knows what happened to them, but it's fine, I'm fine, everything's fine. :P

So, yeah, nothing too deep here. Just some light entertainment for lovers of the Frozen movies who'd like to know more about the parents' backstories. I enjoyed it for what it was.

Content Advisory:

Mention of their being a lot of blood from a non-fatal head wound.

Slowly growing attraction between Iduna and Agnarr. Some of this is noticing physical qualities of the other person as they've gotten older and more handsome/pretty, but nothing sexual or inappropriate for the target readers. Several kisses that are moderately described in terms of lips touching, closeness, and warmth, but again, not excessive or inappropriate.

One use of God's name in vain.

Otherwise, the content was on par with the movies.

Okay, so I was super skeptical of this book at first and was going to give it to my younger cousin. Being the person I am I decided to read it first just to make sure it was okay for her to read, (I think I might wait a few years though). But I am so happy I read it because it was so good!!! I know I know, you all are probably really judging me but if you are a huge frozen fan like I am, this is a must read. It is also really fun because you already know how the story ends and now you are reading how they got there. If you need a short funny, relatable, read. This is the one. I mean if you don't like frozen then you probably shouldn't read this. But if you like disney and frozen. READ THIS.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. One of my kids asked me to read it (our reading tastes don't always align, so I have had some very unimpressive reading experiences this way), but this is legitimately a good book. Not even good for a children's book, or good for a Disney movie, it stands on its own: no clauses required. Such an organic romance builds over time, expertly woven through the pages. There's a lot of hidden song lyrics in this book, which was fun, but did tend to pull me out of the story a bit. Because I then had to sing. What can I say? Somethings never change.

Powieść Mari Mancusi ma swój klimat, prawdziwie baśniowy i podobną historię, fanom animacji mogę szczerze polecić, natomiast ci, którzy szukają czegoś świeżego muszą szukać trochę dalej.

This book was received as an ARC from Disney Publishing Worldwide - Disney Press in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

Being a huge Disney fan and seeing frozen 2 for the first time on DVD/Blu-Ray I was excited to dig into this book. Knowing the struggles of Elsa and Anna and how their parents got killed and what really happened to the fate of Arendelle. All questions are answered with this book with its main focus being on the King and Queen Agnarr and Iduna. It was extremely shocking learning about the history of their families and the powers Iduna had which transferred over eventually to Elsa. It was refreshing to know how the world of Disney's Frozen came to be and I know our community will love this book.

We will consider adding this title to our YA Collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

I won’t even conceal how I feel; I am a massive Frozen nerd. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who enjoyed Frozen 1 & 2 as it gives so much more depth to the backstory and ties together both movies beautifully. When I first saw Frozen 2 it felt sloppy, but this book answered all of my unanswered questions. It thawed my frozen heart and even has me teary-eyed in the last chapter. There were plenty of fun Easter eggs in the book and even some great “gasp” moment. 5 snowflakes from this liberal snowflake.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Although I hate to see characters die, this story gave a lot of explanation behind the whole Frozen story and how their family came to be with the added stuff and two fresh perspectives of the story we knew from both Frozen movies. Iduna and Agnarr have an interesting story and I recommend this book for anybody who loves Frozen.

Explain to me again why Iduna and Agnarr had to die? Their love story is delightful. Their baby girls were so, so loved. This had me close to tears and broke my heart. They really deserved to live to old age Disney.
